Small chain quality Mexican restaurant. This restaurant has been in Dallas since 1986 and is a popular choice for Mexican food in the oak lawn area. You walk in to a very lively Mexican restaurant. The ladies at the hostess stand were very friendly and seated us right away with big smiles. We sat down and waited about 5 minutes before the waitress came around, she introduced herself and took our drink order. She quickly came back with our drinks and dropped some chips and salsa off. The chips were hot and fresh and the salsa was made with fresh charred chilis that gave it a tasty mesquite flavor. After looking over the menu, she came back and took our order for our entrees. We ordered the Pechuga De Pollo and the Pulled Chicken Quesadillas. We ate so much chips and salsa we had to slow down to make room for dinner. She comes out with the food a few moments later and the plates looked delicious. She made sure there was nothing else we needed and let us enjoy our food. The Pechuga De Pollo had a delicious mesquite fire grilled flavor that came with a side of tortillas, guacamole and salsa. The Pulled Chicken Quesadillas came with guacamole and sour cream. Both dishes were delicious. I haven't been here in a while but the service was great, the food was delicious and it wasn't a bad deal at all. Wow so I have been eating at uncle Julio's since it's inception - used to be friends with many of the managers and servers and we used to compete with stories of how guest focused we were! Flash forward 30 years and what a let down -I figured they must have been sold at some point and sure enough- no one but Myra seem to care even one iota about the guest - I was there about ten minutes before lunch special ended a few weeks back and when I went to order the poor bartender said it's too late but I will ask- the big burly km came out and basically said "no soup for you!" Much smaller menu and not same quality is tough to swallow - Tex mex but no nachos? Come on sorry your food cost comes before some customer love. Biggest issue is no sweet n low- first time they said just out, second time they said can't get it in the us anymore ( btw I own four restaurants- so I know better. ) third time I hear they are phasing it out - even tho phasing is a poor choice of works because now it's been two months. I went next door and bought a box the second time and the third I brought a case from my restaurant just to prove a point. Here is the issue I have 300 in gift cards because my friends and family know I like to frequent - I can't eat Mexican food without tea( it's truly a covid thing) look up burning tongue syndrome- when management saw they basically just shook there head - no apology no I am sorry you have to do that just disdain. The Huevos Rancheros was a huge disappointment. It was literally a single flour tortilla with an over easy egg and a teaspoon of something that loosely resembled ranchero sauce. The menu says cotija cheese but there wasn't any. I inquired and a waiter annoyingly replied "let me see." He returned with and said "here's your side of cheese." The service awful from the beginning to be honest. We sat down at the bar and didn't get service for about 5 minutes. Then the server comes over and says, "do you want a menu?" Very disappointed in the food/menu at this long time fave. Change can be good. But the taste, proportions, choice combinations were sub par. The new taco choices were lackluster. Ok now an enchilada plate served with just rice. The beans an extra charge. A new recipe in which you could tell. Only ok. What! Every taco order we made was served incorrectly. The cod looked to be fried golden. But all of the pico onions piled on top that we specifically asked to omit overshadowed the fish. We ordered steak, chicken & beef tacos. We wete served dried out barely there crumbled ground beef, the shredded chicken was dry and scarce, no steak. The price of the tacos...smh for what you received. We took our concerns to the manager Jennifer who did her best to convince us to order for the 3rd time. At that point No Thank you. Regardless of her and Brenda our server who was a darling trying to get the kitchen to get it right. To no avail. Anyway I told the manager even if she had offered us complimentary meals for us patiently sitting there after 3 hours, and 1 special margarita we had bought. We still wouldn't want to have to wait any longer for a meal. It absolutely killed our dining out. So we left and went to a drive thru fast food which ran circles around the lack luster items that were served to us. Shame Shame Shame. Even for easy going, patient, foodies like us. Their food overall usually gets 4 or 5 stars, especially their fajitas. We went at lunch and tried their new fajita bowls and they were absolutely awful and expensive. We had to ask the manager for more chicken because there was very little chicken in the chicken bowl and it's also shredded chicken if you don't like that. I have eaten here a couple times now, and I have to say the food, service, and over all atmosphere pretty much averages a 3 Star review. One of my recent visits was late last year. I had the nachos and split queso with one of my girlfriends. And had a few of their margaritas. I would say the drinks are pretty steep price wise compared to other places in the area and they're pretty average. The alcohol floater the put in their margs is kind of cute though - They put it in an inside out like half. Finally, we were seated at a table for a group of 6-7 (still don't get why I had to wait for my whole party when they sat us at a larger table anyways). We all settled in and ordered drinks and an appetizer - the new chefs queso. My brunch passion fruit mimosa was super delicious but extremely over priced. I can make a whole pitcher at home for the prices they charge for a drink. #preach The queso came out and it was AMAZING. One of my family members ordered the chilaquiles for brunch. They came out and she was extremely disappointed. There was a giant dollop of sour cream in the middle of the dish. She likes sour cream, but dang... too much. I ordered the honey chipotle shrimp as my entree. After the queso, I wanted to keep it light. And light it was. What they label jumbo shrimp, are more like medium sized shrimp. The dish comes with four shrimp, wrapped in bacon. The waiter said it was make you cry spicy, but I have a high spice tolerance and didn't mind the heat. They were pretty tasty, but the presentation was super unappealing. I'd recommend as a app. Don't make the mistake I did and order them as an entree. Next to the breakfast quesadilla or the fajitas another fam member got, they don't live up. Another family member ordered Migas. He didn't complain. But he didn't rant and rave either. So I'm assuming average but not exciting. The waiter was nice but he seemed extremely new. He was slow, I had to ask for corn tortillas three times, and he forgot a few drink refills that were asked for. He also made weird conversation, lingered too long, and followed up to slowly. Service was subpar, but it was a busy holiday. I have a lot of patience for slow service but i also know when it's slower than reasonable - and that's what it was... too slow to be acceptable. It all started at the Oak Lawn location, which my family and I would trek to on special occasions to gorge our faces in a most Medieval fashion. Or you may find yourself at the Ft. Worth location, enjoying a grand, sweeping view of the Texas plains. Or you may wander into my favorite location in North Dallas off the tollway, which has a lively atmosphere filled with intoxicating smells and pleasant staff. All-in-all Uncle Julio's has never dropped the ball. The enchilada plate I ordered as a kid is the same presentation and taste that I get now, as an adult in my 30's. A few tips before I sign off - The Mexican butter will elevate any fajita to its maximum potential. The Caheta/Fried Mexican Ice Cream is a must-have as you finalize your experience at this scrumptious restaurant. I recently visited Uncle Julios on Lemmon where I've visited before, and I ordered the fajitas for two. I ordered two margaritas priced at about $12 while my guest and I waited for the order. The frozen margaritas tasted like pure sugar mixed with salt and zero alcohol. We both had a hard time finishing the botched attempt at a frozen margarita worth that price. I essentially paid an extra $30 with tip for bad drinks while my food order was prepared. It didn't help that my carry out order, which I paid $40 for, had several burnt fajitas had basically the same amount of protein as the fajitas for one order. I'm only leaving two stars because I've enjoyed the single order of fajitas in the past. I should request a charge back from my bank for both the drink and carry out charges, but I'll see if the Uncle Julios business owner is willing to makes things right. read more

You are better off ordering a Happy Meal from McDonald's than eating here. I ordered enchiladas and queso. Enchiladas were uncooked, cheese was hard and no taste whatsoever. The queso was old and dark yellow. The chips were probably the only good thing I ate from my meal. The tortilla from my enchiladas were not even cooked probably and the rice and beans were horrible. I've been contemplating on trying Uncle Julio's for some time now, and I finally decided to give it a go. For a Monday evening, the place had a lot of people dining in. I'm not sure what the interior looked like before their recent renovation, but it looks really nice now. It's a little fancier than Mi Cocina in comparison. We sat down and 15 minutes later, we were still staring around for someone to offer us drinks or chips and salsa. The place was half packed, so I'm not sure what the issue could have been. Finally, our waitress came to our table with an unfriendly and dry attitude. She brought over chips and one bowl of salsa and asked if we wanted drinks. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay, and over 10 minutes later, she brings me a red wine. I had to explain to her that a Chardonnay is white and what she brought me wasn't correct. So, almost 30 minutes in the restaurant, and I still don't have a drink...not even a glass of water. We saw a manager walk by and we asked him if he could be so kind as to bring us more salsa and some waters while we wait. I was so turned off from the horrible service, that I almost wanted to leave. After all, we came for dinner, but it was a glass of wine that I really wanted to start the night off with, and it seemed impossible to get any type of drink at the place. But, their menu had so many appealing options on there that I wanted to say and try the food out. When the waitress came back, I placed my order, and of course, when it was brought out, it was indeed wrong. Luckily, their chips and salsa were so good that I was happy to keep eating on them, only to get full by the time our meals finally arrived. Once we received the right entrees, I was glad to know that the Salmon Jardin Fajitas that I ordered was cooked well. The salmon had good flavor and was just the right texture due to it not being overcooked. The flour tortillas were amazing and made the perfect fajita tacos once I put everything all together. I would order it again. The rice and beans were wasted calories because the beans didn't have a good flavor and the rice was tasteless. I also had a few bites of the Carnitas Tacos and they were well prepared. None of the food was exceptional, and with that being said, the bad service wouldn't give me any reason to come back anytime soon. For what it's worth, I'd recommend anyone to try it, but there's definitely better Tex-Mex in Dallas than Uncle Juilio's. read more

What an unbelievable fall from grace. In the late 1990s Uncle Julios was one of several "gold standards" of DFW Tex-Mex. The food was always great, the ingredients fresh and tasty, and the drinks outstanding. By comparison, these days Uncle Julio's is a meagre shell of its former self. Nothing left but outrageous prices for extremely mediocre food and drink. The tiny shrimp that came with my fajitas had to have been from a can. Add a side of dirty surroundings and horrible drinks... WHY would anyone possibly volunteer to eat at this complete and total dive at such prices when there are so many amazing TexMex options nearby? Had lunch here at around 1pm on a Friday and boy was it buzzing! Thankfully there was no wait, but within no time there was a line. Once we were seated, promptly we were met by our waiter. We snacked on some thin, crispy, tortilla chips and a spicy salsa. We also got the table side guacamole, can fresh can't be beat. I ordered the cozumel shrimp tacos, that mango habanero sauce with fresh chunks of pineapple, made for a well balanced meal paired nicely with the spicy rita. A friend of mine ordered the Guadalajara fajita combo of medium rare steak with bacon wrapped shrimp, which was very enjoyable. Some places mess up on the classic accompaniments of rice and beans, but they did a great job of elevating the standard taste profile. A bit pricey, but the quality speaks for itself here. Came here on Sunday around 1 for lunch with 1 other person. It's a super spacious restaurant and we got seated right away. Started off with drinks, apparently you can only get bloody Mary's during brunch which ends at two. We thought that was a little weird but made it in time and the blood mary was good! We also started off with the chile con queso which was good! Their salsa is also smokier than other salsas I've had and uniquely flavorful. For food I got the honey chipotle chicken fajita. I normally don't do fajitas cause I feel like I'm doing all the work of putting it together but the honey chipotle just sounded too good. I was very happy with my choice, the honey chipotle glaze was sweet but not too sweet and tested excellent with some onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, Guac in a flour tortilla. My friend got the chicken enchiladas, you get three gigantic enchiladas which were suuuuper creamy. He was really full. Overall, really enjoyed my meal. I want another drink by now, but can tell by the way she hasn't asked about it and my service so far, that I could easily end up waiting another 15 minutes for this drink. The worse thing though was the wait staff, first it took 30 minutes before we got our drinks. The food was great but our server tho!! She was awesome! So attentive! She recognized we were on lunch and let us know up front she would make sure everything was quick because she knows what it's like to have short lunch breaks. She even joked around with us too. I used to come here with a couple of north Dallas friends. I recommend it to a friend for her birthday party with 11 people and it was a pretty big disappointment from days past. The food was decent but the service was abysmal with a two hour sitting. Food brought out auction style with no one knowing who gets what. Check table waiting 101 for how to sequence your orders by seat number going clockwise. No need to play musical chairs with plopping down food to the wrong people. Then the checks were the same way of course since they didn't know who had what. The din in the place got to be horrible long about 8pm with everyone screaming over top of yelling from the tables around them. That *might* work in a bar when you want to pack people in and turn the music up so people have to be face to face to hear each other, but that din has no place in a dining environment, not at all. Then there was the insult of pint frozen margaritas served in 8oz mugs. No happy hour for people like me who came in before 7pm, only to get soaked for $20 for two half pint weak frozen margaritas. Jesus. Had I known they were that much I would have paid a couple more bucks to put some liquor in them. Sadly, I drove in early in heavy traffic in wet weather with accident delays for this. I was visiting Dallas for the weekend and my friends decided to set a reservation for this place. We sat down after dealing with valet. Then we sat and sat some more. I dont know if it was because they didnt know who was the server or if our server was on break but we didnt even have drinks. Ten minutes later and after talking to someone we finally got our drinks and ordered some margaritas and guacamole. The guacamole is made table side and we got a margarita that required a tableside presentation for the garnish using liquid nitrogen. Seemed a little far a reach for a garnish but it was sort of cool but very time consuming. Then we ordered some entrees. I got the quesadillas and my friends had many enchilada dishes. They were decent and very happy with my order. When we were finally ready to go we could not find our waiter. We waited for another good 10 minutes until we decided to go up to the front desk together and asked them to get our checks. They first attempted to find the waiter which took more time out of our night then finally what looked like a manager decided to split our checks and finally get us paid out. We never got angry or demanded better service which was convenient for the staff seeing they seemed like they couldnt be bothered. I would have rated this place alot higher because the food was actually nice. But the whole experience was so awkward we decided to just leave and take our business elsewhere. So the next time I am in Dallas I will make sure my friends and I avoid this place. read more

It was the site of our first group celebration dinner and where I got first (and only) phone number from a waitress. Uncle Julio's does Tex Mex right. No weak links and actually makes a pretty decent margarita. All the usual suspects are included on the menu from fajitas, chicken poblano and of course queso! Make sure to request they add beef.
