Had dinner at Underground Pizza on Thursday evening. An average pizza spot, but one of the better pizza options in the Financial District. Quality: I ordered a Regular Slice and a Regular Sicilian Slice. Both were perfectly fine, but nothing that would have me rushing back. The Sicilian Slice was thick and heavy, but it could have used much more cheese. The Regular Slice did not have that same problem, as it was loaded with cheese. However, it came out a bit greasy and the crust was not my favorite. Quantity: Average size pizza slices, but the Sicilian Slice was hearty. Value: $2.75 for a Regular Slice. $3.00 for a Sicilian Slice. Ambiance: Underground Pizza is located in the FiDi of Manhattan. The shop has the kitchen in the front, then a raised seating area in the back. It is not the prettiest of dining spaces, but it works to quickly eat a slice. They have a television in the far corner showing sports highlights with audio in the background. Crowd: I came at an odd time, but there were a few people waiting for a slice or two. I have NO idea how Underground Pizza has 4-stars. I mean it's not terrible, but not great either - just Average pizza, in my opinion. I think the reason for the higher rating is because there are so few pizza-by-the-slice options in FiDi. Just look at my pics and you'll see what I mean. They use your basic Hormel pepperoni (not like the old world pepperoni they use at Adrienne's nearby), so the slice is extra greasy. Normally I don't mind that, but the problem is the flour they use doesn't get crisp when cooked, even when they leave it in the oven for a while, so you end up with a floppy slice of pizza. And since it's loaded with grease, the cheese, pepperoni, etc, slides off the slice when you pick it up...you can see it in my pics. I thought maybe I just had a bad batch, so I came again, and had the same problem, so it's just their pizza. The problem is, there are no other pizza options nearby, except for Pranzo or Justino's, but both are only 3-Stars as well. Adrienne's is awesome, but they don't do slices, only whole pizzas. So like I said, the pizza's not bad, but not great either, and if you're craving a Slice, then this one of your only options in FiDi. And I guess when you have nothing good to compare it to, then it'll do. read more

I ordered my lunch for the first time through yelp and I have to say I'm a happy camper... My boss and I decided to order from underground... I was craving pasta and she wanted a calzone... I checked yelp to see their menu and load and behold you can actually order the food right from yelp. I ordered the chicken and broccoli pasta with garlic and extra Virginia oil my boss got the chicken Parmesan calzone. We places the order for 12pm and we already added tip... I am basing my review on the one item on the menu I had-- the broccoli rabe w/ sausage slice. The pizza itself was pretty generic stuff for NYC, nothing remarkable. Sadly I've had much worse in our town. But the addition of the rabe and the sausage was really nice. This place gets a bonus star for bizarre old-school NYC ambiance. I'll start by stating the obvious - there's a ton of pizza places all over NY. Some are excellent, but I feel like so many leave a lot to be desired. Underground Pizza definitely falls on the more favorable end of this spectrum. Let's start with value. Don't you hate ordering a $20+ dollar pie, and having it come out looking and tasting more like a plain pita bread than a pizza, with minimal amounts of the toppings you ordered (and as a result, minimal flavor)? Happens far too often. With Underground, each well-portioned slice carries a satisfying amount of toppings and sauce. Slices are in the 3-4 dollar range, and there's always at least a dozen varieties to choose from. You'll find everything from the basics to Sausage in Vodka Sauce to Bacon Jalapeño(yes, it's spicy). Personally, I think the Pepperoni+Mushroom is excellent. Whatever you order, it will come out tasting fresh with a crisp crust. I'm a big eater, but two slices usually leave my hunger levels in a good place. There's many places around FiDi where you can get a slice, but Underground is my go-to. Friendly staff, too! read more

But don't give into temptation, get the pizza, it's the real showstopper here. You might get overwhelmed by all the options for by-the-slice pizza they have available. When I walked in for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon, they were fully stocked with grandma, Sicilian, veggie, BBQ, buffalo, and even upside down pies. I got 1 BBQ and 1 margarita slice, with a bottle of water: $9.50. Pay in cash or they will charge you extra. The crust was well done, but not burnt or too crispy - soft enough to bend in half to eat, but sturdy enough to to hold all the toppings of the BBQ chicken slice. My office randomly decided to have a pizza party and these guys delivered. 11 pies, 5 sodas, and 2 salads got here 45 minutes after we placed the call. Although I've been to NYC several times I've never really eaten the touristy stuff. On this trip i thought I'd have some real deal NYC Pizza. Not sure exactly what i expected; probably flavorful giant slice & saucy. I asked what the most popular slice was...they said Sicilian & Grandma. However i ordered regular Cheese (classic) & grandma. Figured if their Pizza is good even plain cheese will be good. Grandma was mozzarella sauce & basil....i figured like Margarita....i love Margarita! Nope. I added basil & even tried parm but nothing gave it flavor. The cheese slice was also lacking flavor. The crust was good i think it was the sauce that was lacking. BUT I'm not from here so maybe NYorkers have a different taste for sauce. It's true as other reviews noted; it is hot in there, but it's because they are baking Pizza after Pizza after Pizza. I enjoyed watching them toss the dough & everyone was so nice. Received lots of smiles & hellos. I may have just ordered the wrong thing but i won't be back to find out. This is my favorite place for Grandma slices in downtown NYC. Underground has a great variety of Grandma slices that you do not get anywhere else and the prices are reasonable. They are perfectly baked with great flavor and service is fast. I cannot attest to the regular or Sicilian slices but they looked good. read more

Contrary to what Manhattan-ites or other transplants think, when it comes to pizza, I don't get fancy. Maybe because I've been raised in NJ and gotten my fair share of "NY Style Pizzas" and "big-box pizza" chains, but I'm really not that fancy. I only eat pizza once a week and it's usually Friday night dinner for me. When I get pizza, I usually go with what's cheap, what is open, and what pizza place is closest to me. Obviously, before all of those requirements, the simple question I have is whether the pizza place can give me a nice plain slice of pizza (just cheese). No toppings, no special style, etc ; just a regular cheese slice. I think that's the first and only obstacle. Underground Pizza passes that test. I can get two plain slices of pizza, top it off with some oregano/parmesan cheese/red peppers , take it to my apt a block away and eat it while it's still hot. It passes the test for me. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is solely because of one real reason. They close at 9. Yes, FiDi is a tough customer base and is not a vibrant area in the evenings, but that's a bummer when Cucina Bene's around the corner and I can grab a couple slices from there if I'm either late from work or happy hour. The only other reason I haven't gone here honestly is because Papa Johns offers a small pie of pizza (equivalent to 2-3 slices of NY pizza) for 50% every now and then once the Nets/Rangers/Yankees do something. Since the price ultimately evens out and I get a little more at Papa Johns, I go with them. To make it clear though, that's something Underground can't control. If Papa Johns doesn't have a deal on Friday or Saturday, I'll go to Underground all day. Between Cucina & Underground, there's no difference in either place with regards to quality and price (about $2.50/slice, which is comparable to any place that's not a dollar pizza joint). Note that there are no dollar pizza spots in FiDi that are even open in the evenings on the weekend. I'm still satisfied with the pizza and I'll still be a repeat customer if I need pizza and when there's no deals from Papa Johns. Also, the staff is really nice too! read more
