Contrary to what Manhattan-ites or other transplants think, when it comes to pizza, I don't get fancy. Maybe because I've been raised in NJ and gotten my fair share of "NY Style Pizzas" and "big-box pizza" chains, but I'm really not that fancy. I only eat pizza once a week and it's usually Friday night dinner for me. When I get pizza, I usually go with what's cheap, what is open, and what pizza place is closest to me. Obviously, before all of those requirements, the simple question I have is whether the pizza place can give me a nice plain slice of pizza (just cheese). No toppings, no special style, etc ; just a regular cheese slice. I think that's the first and only obstacle. Underground Pizza passes that test. I can get two plain slices of pizza, top it off with some oregano/parmesan cheese/red peppers , take it to my apt a block away and eat it while it's still hot. It passes the test for me. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is solely because of one real reason. They close at 9. Yes, FiDi is a tough customer base and is not a vibrant area in the evenings, but that's a bummer when Cucina Bene's around the corner and I can grab a couple slices from there if I'm either late from work or happy hour. The only other reason I haven't gone here honestly is because Papa Johns offers a small pie of pizza (equivalent to 2-3 slices of NY pizza) for 50% every now and then once the Nets/Rangers/Yankees do something. Since the price ultimately evens out and I get a little more at Papa Johns, I go with them. To make it clear though, that's something Underground can't control. If Papa Johns doesn't have a deal on Friday or Saturday, I'll go to Underground all day. Between Cucina & Underground, there's no difference in either place with regards to quality and price (about $2.50/slice, which is comparable to any place that's not a dollar pizza joint). Note that there are no dollar pizza spots in FiDi that are even open in the evenings on the weekend. I'm still satisfied with the pizza and I'll still be a repeat customer if I need pizza and when there's no deals from Papa Johns. Also, the staff is really nice too! read more

Excellent pizza in Hanover Square! I tried the vegetable slice with onion, green and red pepper, tomato and broccoli, and the eggplant white slice with tomato, spinach and ricotta. Decent place for a quick bite. I ordered the buffalo chicken bacon slice and a slice of the margarita pizza. Both were a little too oily, and the buffalo chicken bacon tasted extra dry. The flavor was pretty good though if you can get past the oil and dryness. This place was pretty packed, lots of people going in and out so if you're solo or a pair you can find a seat without too much trouble. A lot of people grab and go as well. I live in Portland, Oregon, and many of the folks who move there from Manhattan gripe up and down about how even the random slices in the city are better than the best pies on offer in PDX. So when I come to Manhattan, I do my best to eat at said random slice shops to see for myself how much of this sentiment is based in reality, and how much is just straight-up bullshit. Enter Underground Pizza. Rated highly on Yelp, this joint figures straight in to what I'd expect from your average NY Slice shop. Between the dated logo and the wear and tear on the interior, I'm guessing it's been around a while. Situated right in the heart of the Financial District, I'm sure it gets plenty of business. But since we slid in around mid-afternoon on a weekday, it was totally dead when we sampled our slices. I got to try both the regular and Sicilian style slices. Both were good. Solid crust, but nothing exceptional. Tasty sauce and a good amount of cheese. Overall, damn decent slices. I'd eat these any time, home or here in Manhattan. That said, no way are these, even higher-than-average rated slices better than our best at home. Good, yes. Great? Yes. But not what those expats claim. That said, this doesn't in any way color my rating for Underground Pizza. This is great pizza and I'd eat it anytime. Compared to other slices and pies I've had in NY, it's on the level. Solid pies. As an office coordinator, a lot of pressure is on me when I have to feed 60 people while keeping within the budget that was given to me. Seems like a very simple task, but it was actually hours of research online. Pizza in NY ain't cheap, so when I found Underground Pizza, I was more than thrilled that I would stay somewhat within the budget and still give people at least 2 slices. I was a bit skeptical of their quality and service because of the price, but I was so pleased with how everything turned out!! They delivered right on time, the pizza was fresh and good, and their customer service was just delightful (I changed the order about a million times). Why is this pizza place "underground?" Is it because it's located on a small side street near the water? Or perhaps this New York slice place is named after the London subway system. Maybe it is the rather poor signage leading to the entrance? Whatever the reason, this place should be much of a secret any longer. The slices here are extremely thin, with maximum service area dedicated to the layer of cheese on top of the bread and sauce. This is how you make a New York slice, the tomato sauce isn't overly sweet and nothing overpowers any other element. It's a seemingly simple combination that has eluded many of the other pizza places I've sampled around Wall Street. I ate this after work one day, and not surprisingly considering the nature of what happens around this area, the place was empty. There is a huge dining room, however, which makes this ideal for tourists or visitors to the Exchange Area. The speciality slices seemed a bit old and crusty on my visit, but for a classic slice or two, this is definitely recommended. read more

Not that I would ever get Pizza for lunch, but if I did, Underground would be my second choice (the first being DaVinci) amongst the overwhelming number of establishments in the Financial District. There isn't much to rave about in terms of the Pizza. It's Pizza. The slices are about average crust 1.5 cm in thickness. The sauce is mildly seasoned with salt and pepper. The varieties is amongst that of any other Pizza place in the Financial District. But what gets me coming back to this place (although infrequently) is that there's something about the Pizza that can't make me seem to show some disdain towards it. Perhaps its their fresh mozzarella slice that generates a hearty portion of fresh mozzarella that keeps me coming back. With the exception of this single slice, all other items are grease infested and will leave you with a case of food coma that's the size of New Mexico. For a quick fix pizza bite, Undergrounds is the place. But if you can resist, try avoiding all of the financial district satiety traps and wait until you get off work to hit up some of Manhattan's more notable establishments... read more
