I got a sausage, bacon and egg on a croissant for about $12-ish also got mayonnaise on there they toasted the sandwich by default I want to say but don't quote me. Cute little outdoor cafe! The UN Cafe has AMAZING Thai iced teas for a reasonable price. They are super flavorful but do tend to have a ton of ice. They have a large variety of drinks, sandwiches, and snacks that are much more affordable than other cafes in the area. The owner is incredibly sweet and kind to his regulars. They open early and is conveniently located next to the Civic Center BART Station. There is plenty of outdoor seating which is a refreshing difference from the neighboring bustling coffee shops. This rating and review is only for the service and beverage. Very nice folks greeting you with a smiling face. I ordered a soy latte. The coffee came out very quick. They only allowed credit card if $5 or more. My small latte was only $4.25. The main reason for giving the 2 star rating was the disappointment of the beverage. First of all, it's watered down. Like it's made with instant coffee or just your cheap corporate office brewed coffee. Secondly, it tastes like the non-dairy creamer, not soy milk at all. And I have had many different kinds of soy milk and this is NOT it. I guess for that price, one can expect no more, no less. So, it's just not my cup of coffee. I would've given 1 star but adding one more for their lovely smiley faces. read more

This is a small cafe right next to the Sunday farmers' market. The food and drinks are pretty good (we had an iced mocha, coffee, and buttery, flaky croissant), but there are not as many food options as I had imagined. In fact, it's hard to really know cuz you can't enter the shop, it's locked and you order from a window, you'll only be able to see their full display case for pastries and the like if you're lucky. The worker was nice, and the service was pretty standard. The atmosphere was not so great. Homeless lurking in the area, dirty grounds, looks like an abandoned building really, no curb appeal and nothing really inviting about it. I probably wouldn't be hanging around the area if it weren't for the famers' market right out front. Also, there is no seating here at all, neither indoors nor outdoors... though I saw a little bit of seating closer to Market Street and the BART station, just a bit of a walk away. read more

Omg this is the cutest little coffee shop I've ever seen. Tbh I was being judgmental about this place and never gave it a chance because I seen a couple of homeless people outside so I stayed away from it. But my coworkers were telling me that this place is actually really good. So I checked on yelp and a lot of people said the same things about this coffee shop. To start off the man at the window was soo sweet and nice I loved his smile and attitude! He even knows his regulars name so that must be a good sign if you regulars coming to your coffee shop! I went over to check it out to see what they got so I could come back for lunch and since I was early to work I decided to get some hot chocolate..... yummmm!! It was sooooo delicious and it was not burning hot either! I'm really picky about hot chocolate since I don't drink coffee I really look forward into getting me a nice hot cup of hot chocolate. It was $3 but they have a $5 minimum charge so I decided to get a blueberry muffin, my total came out to be $6. Which was not so bad I'm used to getting two things at Starbucks and paying $10. Next time, whenever I'm around this part of the city, I'd definitely bring cash because I was always be craving hot chocolate! The I went back to lunch and their menu had a bunch of options to breakfast to lunch sandwiches. I decided to get a turkey sandwich and mannnn let me tell you this sandwich was sooooo good. They made it exactly how I like my sandwich with lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, mayo and turkey! It was only $8.50 I believe for the sandwich not bad for lunch because it's expensive eating out in SF. This is at Civic Center by the library. I got off the Muni at Civic Center. The United Nations building is nearby. This cafe is tiny and not a stand, but inside a building. They have a storefront. I asked for a bagel with egg and cheese. They made it pretty fast. I chose the cheese bagel. It was $5. I liked the sandwich and it was a good snack. I am not eating lunch today. They have bagel sandwiches and some other sandwiches. It is moderately expensive and not cheap at all. But it's a fun spot for grab and go bagel sandwiches. read more

It's basically a walk in cafe - buy something, pay for it and take it with you. There is no place to sit and enjoy the hot beverage and/or pastry. For me, the routine at lunch time was the Farmers Market on Wednesdays, OTG on some Thursdays and once in a while Carl's Jr. to buy a famous star burger and a strawberry milkshake for a woman named Christina. Purpose of visit to the City: Came over with my husband to purchase tickets to see The Lion King at the Orpheum and then to drop off a Christmas gift of snacks to my former work colleagues at the State Building. Walking to the Civic Center BART Station, I was getting lightheaded. I knew my blood sugar was dipping low. I had to get something to eat. I wasn't sure if I could make it back home to Alameda without passing out. Thus, a stop at the United Nations Cafe was necessary before heading down the stairs to the station. The cafe serves hot and cold beverages and a variety of sandwiches. Containers of yogurt are in the refrigerated case. They carry assorted snacks, premade cookies, pastries, donuts, bagels, croissants, slices of loaf cakes, etc. Young female employee is helpful and friendly. Eats: one turkey and cheese croissant for $4.00. It is edible and enough to make me feel slightly better that I am not going to pass out. The stop is also a matter of convenience - get something quick to eat without searching too far in the plaza area. It is something to tie me over until I get home. Besides, it is pretty much quiet in the area compared to the area at the end of the plaza where Carl's Jr. is located. (Too much drama on that end.) read more

My friend Kim turned me on to this sandwich shop. When I'm working in the area it's my go to place for a good affordable lunch. They have a wide variety of your basic deli sandwiches turkey, salami, roast beef, BLT, tuna; etc. A choice of cheddar or swiss cheese and toppings. Most sandwiches are between $5.50-$6.50, which make rhem taste even better. Of course they have an assortment of bread, drinks, chips and pastries. Okay the civic center can appear to be a bit grungy and edgy. However the area has been cleaned up and it's quite safe with food trucks and vendors. The name is quite appropriate. I swing past this place and get a latte every time I visit the farmer's market. It is owned by the sweetest old couple who have since turned over operation to other family members. Don't let the name "Cafe" fool you because this is pretty much a walk up hole-in-the-wall on the plaza. There is no quaint patio dining. Look for the blue awning. When I read the word "cafe", I think of a place where I can sit down in a cute booth or outdoor table, be waited on by a possibly pretentious waiter and eagerly await too spend way too much money on a cup of coffee and some grub. Yeah, that's not one of these types of places.... This place handles the breakfast needs of commuters, nearby gov employees and soon to be lawyers and shoppers of the farmer's market/ artisan fairs held on a daily basis. That's right, if you are a walking eater or enjoy munching in a moving environment (a la Muni or Bart) this is for you. They offer a variety of pastries, shnackies, yogurts, pastries and beverages to accomodate your AM needs. Any of the coffee/ tea drinks made are definatly tasty and get your heart pumping (just like anything with caffeine should). They also sell the odd assortment of other goodies (phone cards, film, postcards, etc). Service is quick and cordial and if you don't make your Bart/Muni ride in time, well it's because you lagged that day, not them. Reasonable prices keep this place in the highly recommended catagory for me because where this place is located (right off of both Bart and Muni at Civic Center) they so have the monopoly on the market but they don't exploit it. Plus as an added bonus they have those cool advertisement cup holders. I went here with a friend yesterday morning. My friend brought me a hot chocolate. It tasted fine. Then 15 minutes later I was in the restroom with horrible stomach cramps and major intestine problems that kept me in the rest room all morning at work. I had cramps in places that I should have not been having them. I was sweating and feverish! I had to leave work early to go to the doctor. I was exposed to some type of bacteria from drinking that hot chocolate. I was up all night my system was backed up and its extremely painful. The laxitive the doctor prescribed got most of it out of my system. I had to call a plumber to my house as well. (For obvious reasons) My tummy still hurts! I will never come here ever again. These type of infections can kill people! The health department needs to investigate your business! read more

Maybe it wasn't the WORST latte I've ever had. I mean, the milk wasn't sour, and it contained caffeine. But this was close to the worst. Maybe it was the personal offense I took when the woman operating the espresso machine pulled the first shot for my double, then left the same grounds in the machine and just pressed the button again for the second shot. I ended up with a nasty, bitter double-luongo single shot and some milk. I actually threw it away after it was about a third gone, and if you know me and my coffee, that's really saying something. Perhaps their sandwiches are fine -- she seems to put a lot of care into each one -- and perhaps their drip coffee is OK, though I haven't tried it. But don't spend $2.75 on an espresso drink unless you're a coffee masochist. read more
