Went there for lunch and asked for a plain slice. They got my order wrong and fixed it quickly but the pizza was burnt to a crisp. My two friends got a burnt pizza too and one of them had extremely discolored and questionable dough. Pizza is not worth 5 dollars. read more

Wanted a square slice without having to venture further south to grab it so here we are! Small seating area but very spacious. Open window which really helps gives this place a pleasant eating space (also off the main street to get away from the chaos of NY!). Tried a pepperoni slice and a pepperoni square and cheese square. Overall thoughts? It's perfectly fine! If I was craving a square and was in the area I'd definitely stop by. Really enjoyed the crunch of their pepperoni. So far, so good. One of the doctors at my city gig recommended this spot to a patient and I overheard him exclaiming how amazing the 'za is. I had to ask him to give me the deets. He said they have a really good mushroom slice and that's when I knew I had to try them out. I ran downstairs in between patients and grabbed a slice of mushroom for myself. The crust is on the thin side, which is what I prefer. The end piece is very crusty and there are definitely enough toppings to satisfy. I was able to grab my slice, have it heated up and pay, in under ten minutes. The staff is efficient, fast and pleasant. They greet you when you first walk in and take your order immediately. The place is kept very clean. They have multiple dining options. You can sit inside, either at tables or at a window bar. That window is garage-style and opens completely, for indoor/outdoor dining. They also have a few sidewalk tables, which have now become the norm for many dining establishments. All of their pies look really good. As I said, I like the thin crusts but they do have thicker crust pizzas for purchase, including a really sexy sicilian that made me want to order a second. Another one! About 4 avenues over from the OG location, Upside just opened their 3rd location, another nice and breezy one with wide open space and the same amazing pizza. Get all the slices - cheese, vodka, mushroom, sausage & peppers, pepperoni, they're all excellent. This is far enough away from the original that it should be your new top choice for a slice joint in this area. read more

When in New York, you must eat the pizza. It's like a rule or something. This place was around the corner of my hotel and after seeing the reviews, I gave it a try. Small venue but felt very "New York". I ordered a sausage and pepper as well as the pepperoni. I was giddy with excitement when a fresh pie was pulled out of the oven so I could get it while it was piping hot! The folks working the store were nice! I got good pizza at 3AM, and because of the rarity of that, I'll round up to 4 stars. The mushroom was the better of the two slices I got, good mushroom taste, slightly truffley, crispy crust. Nothing legendary but very good. The spicy vodka tasted more like a buffalo slice? It was acidic in a buffalo-ey way, and a bit too tomato pasty (if that makes sense). But I still scarfed it down, despite it being the weaker of the two slices. I'd come back if in the area, and will prob get the mushroom and a non vodka slice. read more

Their Sicilian slice is everything you want it to be. Thick, airy crust, and all the flavor you could want--I attempted adding a little bit of parmesan, but even that was overkill, it was perfect as served. The vibe is that of a New York pizza joint. I guess it could have been cleaner, but if that's what you want, go to a proper restaurant that charges $22 for personal pizzas that taste worse than this. Based on the reviews, I thought Upside Pizza only had Sicilian-style pizza, but they also have "regular"/triangle slices of pizza. That being said, I love Sicilian-style/square pizza, so I got a slice. One thing to note is that these slices are HUGE. I have a decent appetite, and one slice was very filling. I was surprised by how thick the slices were as most Sicilian slices I've had have been a bit thinner. The pizza is good but super filling since there's so much dough. Upside Pizza is amazing. I describe it to people as "hipster pizza", as it is in the new New York style like Williamsburg Pizza, Scarr's, and Zazzy's. It's thin like your average New York pizzeria, but they use better quality ingredients and charge a little more per slice as a result. I've tried a plain slice, pepperoni slice, and thick pepperoni slice. All are great in their own way. The pepperoni curls are not the (now overused) same variety as Prince St. Pizza, and they're crispy and satisfying. The cheese slice has blister marks you get from using a properly hot oven. And the thick pepperoni slice has cheese laced up the side of the crust, to add another layer of umami. The crust almost reminds me of Parisian baguette, with its subtle saltiness and fluffy airy quality. I work nearby, and am already daydreaming of my next visit. read more

This is a very simple review. They serve pizza here. There are 3 or 4 tables and a bar/counter by the window to sit and eat. There are some tables outside in the front. You order at the counter, they warm your pizza in the oven, you get called when your pizza is done, you pay. The pizza is so yummy. It's simple but the ingredients they use are so great, making a simple slice taste great. The slices are nicely thin, crisp and tasty. They have sicilian slices but I didn't try them. Picked up a pepperoni slice from here today. The owner seems like a very serious guy. Efficient at what he does but very brief. No friendly chit chat. He put the pepperoni slice in the oven and served it up on a paper plate for me. Lots of thin small pepperoni pieces on the slice that are crispy. This is an amazing pizza place. The shop is on the small side but relatively cozy, with great decor. The service is fast/speedy, even when there's a small crowd. A definite contender for best quick slice in Midtown East. They've got both New York Style and sicilian, both of which are great. Great sauce, crust is consistently thin and crispy but not hard or overcooked, and a good variety of toppings. Both slices are on the bigger side. Horrible with a capital H. Worst pizza I've ever eaten in New York. The moment I walked in I should I have known it was going to be terrible. It was not Italian-owned. At least the guys working there were not. Ordered four square slices (two pepperoni and two cheese) and when I asked for Parmesan, the guy taking orders looked at me with an annoying expression and said NO. What? How can you not have Parmesan at a pizza place? Like I said, they're a disgrace to New York pizza. When I bit into the pizza, the dough had a nice texture but it tasted off like it was made with bad, old water. The pizza sauce was unimpressive and tasteless and the pepperoni tasted like Walmart great value pepperoni. A metallic, bad-quality, meaty taste. If you know what I mean, you know. The cheese pizza was no good either and we found a tiny fly in the sauce on one of them. Sad to say that we only took one or two bites and tossed everything in the garbage. The final stop of my running pizza tour, I ran up to Upside and had some trouble finding it with the scaffolding blocking it on a dark block & on a rainy night. They kept the menu relatively simple here, so I walked right up the counter with no line & ordered a classic slice of cheese. This wasn't crazy thin, which could be a good thing with a quality crust. I found this crust to be thicker than the other two classic New York style slices I had just eaten, but it was quite dry. They also go heavy on the cheese, so my slice tasted almost entirely of cheese. The tip was easy enough to chew through because there was so much cheese & it was so oily, but by the time I got to the back half of the slice, the dry breadiness of the crust was too much to handle and it sapped all the moisture out of my mouth. If you like your pizza to be like a very cheesy saltine, you'll really like this place! Personally, I thought the crust was difficult to get through & the composition was not very balanced as the sauce was completely overwhelmed by the massive amount of thick greasy cheese & dry crust. The dry crust could have been a symptom of it being late & close to closing, but I think that for my personal preferences, I'd like to see a little less cheese & a little more sauce. read more

It's a decent slice with good char and fold on the crust and solid quality ingredients. Some are better than others though. The plain thin is excellent - The simplicity lets the quality of the ingredients shine. The Detroit style pepperoni is very good, with greasy. cupping pepps and a decently airy crust with reasonably crispy edges. The vodka was just OK to me - in a city where vodka sauce is exploding in popularity, I've just had better/felt like I could make a better one. This is my go to spot for lunch when I'm at work 2 blocks away. I end up eating pizza way more than I admit to my family. The pizza here is as good as some more hyped up famous places. Their Sicilian is pretty close to Detroit style which I love and they have a great vodka slice. It's very consistent and I hate paying up for expensive crappy midtown lunches close to $20 so I'll probably stick with upside pizza several times a week. They need more tables though.
