My daughter and I had been looking for a nail salon that provide's quality service, is clean, calm, personal, and where the technicians DO NOT speak in their own language in front of us--making us feel like they are talking about us. Ever had that experience? When the technicians converse with each other in a language foreign to you, they glance at you, and then they continue talking? It's feels awkward and uncomfortable! At Urbantopia, Stacey, the owner requires her technicians to speak English! And we appreciate that!!!! Her technicians welcoming and friendly to us. Went in for the first time to get a quick pick-me-up mani yesterday. Everything is very clean, the products they use are great and they have a really inventive drying process that cut down the sit-and-wait time by 75%. The manager was friendly, adorable and, totally unrelated, one of the chicest women in town. For $20, it's by far the best mani I've had in Portland. I found this cute little salon while recently visiting Portland. I really needed a manicure and after asking a salesperson in a near by store I was pleasantly surprised to find this place. Not your normal run of the mill nail salon where your rushed in & out like I'm used to and always disappointed. THE best place for a mani/pedi in downtown Portland!

Urbantopia is wonderful. I called to schedule a same day appointment for manicure and they got me in for an appointment that evening. Catherine did a wonderful job, she greeted me by name (I am a new client so we hadn't met) and was ready for me only a couple minutes after I got there. I had a shellac polish put on and she took her time. The attention to detail was great. I asked for nail art with circles and she was worried the circles weren't perfect. But I love them! I really enjoyed the whole experience and will definitely only be going to Catherine from now on. I'm excited to try a pedicure next time. read more

I've been going to Urbantopia since they opened. They are absolutely amazing. Today I had an appointment at 3:45. I walked in at exactly 3:45, and 25 minutes later was already walking out with a perfect shellac manicure. Yen, I believe that's how you spell her name, is the fastest nail tech I've ever experienced. And not just that, it is an amazing manicure. She even gets the edges of the nail so they don't peel too early. I recommend this place to anybody who asks. And even some who don't. read more

Catharine who I originally met on my first visit has moved on to open her own rival downtown nail spot, but I still come to Urbantopia because they're excellent, clean, efficient, and always available semi-last minute. I came in four months ago in August and got a pedi from the business owner. Even though sandal weather is long gone here in Portland, I am literally still thinking about that pedi! The owner was a wealth of knowledge about the critical difference between gel and shellac and the impact on foot and toenail health of each option (who knew?!). I like to get shellac on my toenails because as a runner and barre enthusiast, I always assumed normal polish would come off quickly due to my active lifestyle. She leveled with me (unlike any other salon before) and said that just wasn't the case if your manicurist properly prepared the surface and applied a quality polish correctly. I took her up on the non-shellac challenge and sure enough, two rough trail races and a dozen barre classes later, the polish was still totally intact. I really appreciated her honesty and the time she spent explaining things to me, even though it meant I spent less on the service itself (as shellac costs more than regular). read more

I wanna love this place so much, but this recent manicure is already chipping and peeling and it hasn't even been a week. It's so close to my work and they are so fun to talk to, but I can't have a $30 manicure last for four days when I can have a $25 manicure last for nearly two weeks! I hate to do this, but it really was a 2 star ( if that) experience. I wanted a shellac pedicure, saw the great reviews, and decided to give it a try. Now it's not the service providers fault that it was her first day working there. It's easy to become overwhelmed and flustered in any new environment. HOWEVER! The service was a bit of a mess, even though the girl was very sweet. My problem is that, I basically got a polish change for $50. I've never payed $50 ever for a pedi with shellac. It's usually around $20-$25 for a regular pedi + $10 extra for shellac. That obviously wasn't the case here, and it was $60 with the tip. The thing I was really bummed out about, is that the razor thing was sitting next to her the whole time, and she never used it on me! That's why I really need pedicures; to get the calluses off! I stand all day for work and the calluses build and build causing me pain. My feet felt rough when I left and I was very un satisfied. Maybe if I would have went to someone else, this wouldn't be the case. 1 star for the pretty polish color I chose, and 1 star for how sweet my service provider was. read more

I met Catherine when she was a one person shop in Hawthorne called Zartisa. I have very long hair and as such, I have always been nervous when I had someone trim it because I was fearful they would take too much off. It's silly, I know. With hair that long, I am the only one that would notice if they took 4 inches off instead of 2. Catherine was always so patient and kind with my needs and had amazing sense of style. She earned my trust quickly and now I would let her do anything. After years working together, she has done my hair for my wedding, formal work events, professional head shots, and our family portrait. I followed her to her new place downtown, Urbantopia. The atmosphere is relaxing and it's conveniently located in the heart of downtown. Her partners Tracy and Kelly are equally as friendly and welcoming when you visit. My 4 girlfriends and I were in Portland for my stagette weekend and I read great reviews about this spa and went ahead and booked a few massages, pedis, and hair cut and coulour services between my girlfriends and I. Boy were we in for a treat!! They had my name in big bold letters at the front of the store with "Congratualtions " on and even had some fun props as my girlfriends and I took pictures. They prepared some drinks, crackers and assortment of dips and cheese and fruits and treats! They made that evening quite special and treated us like celebrities! Our massage services were fantastic! and everything else was an awesome experience! My girlfriends and I were so happy with all our services and most of all we were very pleased with the staff accommodating our every request. I highly recommend this place to whomever.
