This is probably some of the best poke I've had. Their rice has a little oil on it to give it flavor, fish is fresh, and their ingredients all taste good in their sauce. I got 3 scoops and they definitely didn't cheap out on the scoops so I got my money's worth! I just recommend not getting broccoli. I'm on a health diet right now so I thought I'd try it, but it was too hard compared to the rest of the items in my bowl. The sauce was overpowering and didn't let any of the natural taste from the fish shine through (and the sauce was overly sweet and without much significant taste beyond being saccharine). Hands-down the best poke location I've been to in SoCal. Freshest fish to order and a lot of options to order for the sides. Their Uroko Sauce is basically soy sauce; personally, my favorite is Uroko + spicy miso. This place was close by and looked super good from the photos. We went in for dinner and got it to go. Staff was very friendly and place was nice and clean. I got home which was about a 5 minute drive back and it was honestly my least favorite pike place I have ever been to. The rice was super soggy and I actually gave up on eating it. Pretty standard, good poke! This place is fairly affordable and even has Happy Hours from 2-6pm where boba and beer is half off. Unfortunately, the Asahi was out when we went, but that didn't ruin our mood! The fish was fresh, there were a lot of options, and everything tasted awesome. My boyfriend and I shared a large poke (5 scoops) and got salmon (very fresh and fatty), tuna, yellowtail, and octopus. The octopus was surprisingly delicious, very firm and yummy. I do wish they had given a little more, but for the price of $13.92, this was a great amount of food. Would definitely come back for another round, and it's great for lunch during work or a quick stop on a drive. Also, checking in on Yelp gets you a free miso soup or soda! Keep in mind, I'm originally from Hawaii. So if you are too, you'll be just whelmed with this place. This place is basically like those chipotle style poke shops that are popping up everywhere now days. While it is build your own and you cant fault them for what you pick. the ingredients are okay at best. And because the 'build your own' is the style of the business, people can very easily mess it up. The place is clean, they were fast, and parking isnt horrible, but for the quality of the fish, I would say it's very very average. And the amount of sauce applied pools a little bit at the bottom, based on the other ingredients that you pick. It might be a little too much sauce too. Price is about the same as other places like this, but it would be more worth it if the fish quality was better. read more

Not sure why I haven't reviewed Uroko after any of my many other visits, but here we go: this is my go-to poke spot in this part of OC. Hands-down the most consistent and generous in the area. My usual is a medium ($10) half-brown rice, half-salad, with two scoops of salmon and one of yellowtail. I go with most of the available toppings (special shout-out to the free scoops of avocado) and end with the spicy original sauce, which is soy-based. This is always more than enough food for me and I never EVER have to ration my fish when digging in. I love it. Workers here are competent and consistent with sizes, and even though I always get mine to go, there's ample seating available to diners who can't wait to eat their bowls. This is my 3rd trip into Uroko Cafe and they are always consistent. Service is quick and staff is mostly friendly....I say mostly cuz I've ran into a few that clearly don't like their job but overall good. There poke bowls however are amazing. They seem to over stuff them every time....not complaining. Just saying! If you need a quick poke fix and are near South-coast I definitely recommend this place. Kind of hidden but worth the effort. I have been a long time customer ever since I moved down to Irvine and always loved this place. The food is usually really good and the service has been well, but today, I tried to buy a cup of tuna on the side, like I normally do with my 3 scoop poki bowl. They have great selection here. I had mostly cooked so I had the octopus and shrimp. I made mine spicy. I love their sauces. They give you free either avocado or seaweed in your bowl. The price was decent and I really enjoyed the food. If you check in, you get a free drink. The reason why I put one less star is because they forgot to give us the miso soup. It was freaking raining cats and dogs and probably even lizards and snakes and platypi - not used to that shite anymore and not metrosexual enough to own an umbrella so instead of walking from the University Of Phoenix building right up the street I actually drove over and snagged the first available parking that opened up after circling the lot a few times. I saw this place when I was looking through Yelp for possible places I could go for lunch and it sounded like a winner. I had driven past it on Bristol but the name alone didn't really tell me much about what they served and I missed seeing the other sign that mentions poke - it could have been one of those horrid fast food Japanese places with freaking teriyaki on everything and a buncha Californication rolls. Or the other extreme some super fancy schmancy Japanese place for salarymen and Yakuza where they only speak in Japanese and you're greeted at the entrance by some freaking inakamono in a kimono that takes you to your own room with tatami mats and closing screen door and you gotta spend 2K minimum. Whoa - gotta stop with the peyote-infused Junmai Daiginjo sake while writing reviews. Anyway, back to Uroko.... So you have choices: 1) Bowl Size - Small, Medium, Large 2) Base - White Rice, Brown Rice, Chips, Salad, Half & Half, and Wrap (3 proteins) 3) Sides - Crabmeat, Avocado, Cucumber, White Onions, or Everything (crabmeat and avocado have an added charge) 4) Protein - Tuna, Salmon, Spicy Tuna, Yellowtail, Albacore, Shrimp, Octopus, Eel, Organic Tofu, Shrimp Tempura, Edamame 5) Sauce - Uroko Original (not spicy, mild, medium, spicy), Spicy Mayo, Spicy Miso, Wasabi Ponzu, Wasabi Mayo, Pink Salt 6) Toppings - Green Onions, Masago, Garlic Chips, Fried Onion, Wasabi, Gari (Ginger - meaning the flat thin pink slices), Dried Seaweed Seasoning, Cilantro, Lime, Jalapeno So my choice was Large/Salad/no sides/salmon, tuna, yellowtail, eel, albacore/Spicy Mayo/Masago, Cilantro, Ginger, Green Onions Definitely a good deal for the amount I got especially comparing to other places I've been nearby recently. So I guess this is like a Japanese take on the whole poke thing considering poke is a Hawaiian dish. That would explain the inclusion of unagi (eel) when most poke places don't have that as a choice. Turns out the name comes from a phrase 目から鱗が落ちる Mekara Urokoga Ochiru - scales fall from one's eyes. Sorta like that guy Saul when he evolved from reptile to mammal - but nevermind that. How was it? It was awesome and I wish I knew about it before my last day in Costa Mesa. I like that the place has a huge dining area and a pretty mellow and welcoming vibe. Lots of parking behind (east) of the actual restaurant. It's actually sort of a big parking area that is sort of shared with the businesses just to the north of it - not that there are designated spaces for the businesses that I noticed but then again it was pouring rain when I got there. Parking lot can be entered in two places - Bristol (if you're going north just before the actual restaurant there's a little driveway) or Paularino (first driveway if you're headed east past the intersection with Bristol). The lot can be also crowded AF during peak lunch hour so good luck. Will definitely visit next time I'm in Costa Mesa. read more
