It will taste better. All the hot soup are good. For rice dish, thịt nướng doesn't taste good. It should be roasted or grilled for better taste. first thing we noticed was how big and spacious the restaurant is. we felt really comfortable eating here because the table were spaced out and it was such a wide area compared to the usual mom n pop restaurants that usually require people to squeeze together. we ordered 4 things: banh xeo, bun rieu, bun bo hue, mi quang. all of them were delicious and the soups were still flavorful and not watered down. which is rare in vietnamese restaurants nowadays with long lines of customers waiting to be fed. for bun rieu they used angel hair pasta and it went really well with the naturally sweet tomato soup. the bun bo hue was good. my dad really it better than most other places we've tried. for mi quang, they used pork rib meat which i found tastier and gave more portions than the usually thinly sliced pork belly or tiny minced pork meat that usually disappears towards the bottom of the bowl. i like that this place is relatively cheap compared to the current inflated prices around socal. they maintain good meat quality and provide a nice portion that is guaranteed to make you feel stuffed by the time you leave. The banh xeo was fried perfectly and went well with a sweet salty dipping sauce. the outer layer wasnt overly fried where it was hard and wasnt soft. the banh xeo gave that perfect crisp while maintained a moist inside from the bean sprouts. i definitely recommend this place. my parents already voiced their desire to come back again for a family meal. I think this will be our new go-to place for vietnamese comfort food. we didnt have to wait very long either. the waiter came by and took our order and our food came out all together within 15 minutes or less. read more

Decent banh xeo with good prices. We come on a Saturday's lunch and it was busy but the service is still good. We order 2 banh xeo 1 pork 1 vegan, 1 egg roll, 1 banh thap cam (banh xeo, banh beo, nem), 1 nem nuong and drinks for a total of $50. Basically it was pork pancake, vegan pancake, rice cakes, cured pork meat and grilled pork sausage. The pancakes are big but they are not as crunchy as other places. The pork one has a lot of bean sprouts, shrimp and pork pieces. The vegan one has tofu and bean sprouts. The rice cakes are surprisingly good too. We enjoy all the dishes and the price cannot be beat. Overall, recommend especially if you like Vietnamese pancake and rice cake. read more

This place used to make really crispy and delicious banh xeo but has since gone downhill over the years. The banh xeo is now an overly thick doughy mess without much flavor. It's hard to finish one these days and not in a good way either though their portions are still huge. It's pretty cheap too at about $7 but it all just tastes very mediocre. The other items banh beo and banh tom were all cheap as well and also tasted just very mediocre. I don't think I'll be back until I hear they've gotten back to their former glory days. The food is definitely cheap but I don't think I'd mind paying a little bit more for better quality tasting items. P.S. Parking is not bad in a strip mall lot. I have a set place to go to for banh xeo when I'm home in the SGV. When I saw banh xeo on the menu at Van's Restaurant, I knew I wanted to see if I found a spot to call my own in the OC for banh xeo. While it was okay, it doesn't hold a candle to the one I go to in Rosemead. I found the batter too thick with not enough egg. My friend and I also ordered the egg rolls to split and those are pretty solid. The interior of Van's reminds me of those old school restaurants where you'd go to karaoke. For years (20+ yrs), this is my go-to restaurant when am in the mood for good Vietnamese food and I don't want to cook! They have a menu with all kinds of great food (noodles, rice plates, etc.) and don't forget their all time famous bánh xèo (Vietnamese crepes with pork, shrimps & veggies), it's the best in town!! Inside the restaurant, they have a food to-go concession stand with different types snack foods, soups, curry, rice cakes, flan, jello, etc. It's a cool spot to pick up a quick item or two for whatever occasion. I requested the rice paper along with order of banh xeo. They said they don't have the rice paper in the restaurant (but they still sell spring-roll?!? I guessed they roll that stuff by banana leaves???). I left it aside and told myself never come back. Then I still gave them a second chance for after 8 years. My cousin from Texas wanna try banh xeo. My favorite restaurant was Thanh Ha (which always asked customers if they want rice paper has been closed) so I need to take my cousin to Van, no choice. Quan My is my favorite too but they like the way Van makes banh xeo. Then they told me the same thing when I asked for rice paper. They still don't have it in the restaurant? What the heck was that? I asked the waiter so how could you guys have spring rolls? You guys ordered spring rolls from somewhere else and resell them here? Or I'll order spring rolls and take the rice paper part to roll my banh xeo? You the owner if you don't have to give the rice paper for free if you don't want to. You can sell it for couple dollars if customers demand it. I understand lots of people don't roll banh xeo with rice paper, but there are still some other circumstances, like myself. Stellar. The food is authentic and delicious. We ordered two items and an Vietnamese iced coffee. First item was the com tam thit nuong and it was tasty and the portion is solid. Second item was the bun rieu and this soup was flavorful and was a good sized portion. Overall the food is a B+. The best part of this was how affordable all this was. Two meals and a drink for roughly $20 is a miracle nowadays. I kept thinking "how are they doing this in this economy?" My family has been coming here since I was a kid for banh xeo. They are solid. This visit, the banh xeo and banh khot I ordered were a bit burnt. This has not been the case in the past. They are generous with their greens. I wish they regularly had sorrel in their greens, but it's hit or miss. The sorrel is quite tasty with the banh xeo. Also got the rau ma which was good. I gotta say, the first time I pass by this place, it took a great courage to get in. The glasses are tinted and it's hard to see inside. From the help of other Yelpers' reviews, I proceed to order Banh Xeo (the Vietnamese crispy pancake), Banh Tom Co Ngu (the deep fried shrimp and sweet potato), and Bun Tom Thit (the vermicelli with shrimp and grilled pork). The first two dishes also came with a mountain of greens. I was lost. I didn't know what to do. After some help from the waiters and neighboring tables, I left my utensils on the table, and proceed with my bare hands. Take a piece of pancake or shrimp or sweet potato or the egg rolls and dip in the fish sauce, and wrap in a piece of lettuce and a few other greens, and shove it into the mouth. Didn't who invented this method, but the person must be a foodie. the crunchiness of food paired with the fresh greens to cut down the grease, while the fish sauce brings out the "umami" of the natural ingredients of food. Contrasting while balancing. Well done. The vermicelli itself was also good. The broiled shrimp and pork were full flavor while still juicy. Blend the whole bowl with the provided fish sauce, stir and munch. This dish is really good for a hot day. Very refreshing. Room for improvements: restrooms can use some facelift. Considering you have to use your bare hands to handle some dishes, you need to visit the restrooms prior, and a better restroom would help the appetite. read more
