This review is only for the Banh Chung during Tet: WOW!! This place is super popular. We came on a Friday night before Tet and there was a line out the door to get their famous Banh Chung. It's a bit deceiving because you had to go inside first, pay and then wait in line to get the fresh Banh Chung. I went inside, ordered 24 of them and the lady told me to wait till everyone collected their orders. I was nervous at first cause I wasn't sure if they'd have enough, but they did! She hooked it up and I was the last customer of the night to get all the Banh Chung. The taste of their Banh Chung is so good, especially fried! They don't skimp on the filling. The sweet potato fries with shrimp would be so much better if the potato cuts were a little thicker. Right now you mainly taste the crunchy crust. Two more excellent dishes I recommend. The cha gio is excellent, it's done rế-style which looks like a fine bird's nest on the outside which results in a glassy crunch, the filling is crab-forward. I also love the canh bun which fits better with my stay TF away from red meat diet. I pass the blood cube to the wife then dig in. Hits the spot every time! Did I mention this restaurant is the least expensive in Little Saigon? Most dishes are below $10 as of the writing (11-2023). Canh bun is $8.50. Other restaurants would charge double that. They also have freshly made delicacies stacked on two long tables in front of the main door. I buy the little banh chung (steamed sweet rice, mung bean, pork wrapped in banana leaves) which is perfect for a lunch on the go. I take it hiking the peaks around here. But they're super crunchy so I'll forgive them: Also the ambiance isn't great, not very clean and not pretty but if you're just here for the food then that won't matter. I ordered mine without bean sprouts because I don't like them. In the case you do they bran sprouts, they give you A LOT. The banh xeo comes with nuoc mam and a giant plate of greens to eat it with. Taste veTheir banh xeo is really good and light - very crispy with lots of lean pork and shrimp. Very generous serving of veggies with the banh xeo. We also got the banh tom co ngu which are the sweet potatoe fries with shrimp - its massive for 9 bucks w 4 big shrimps. I would definitely come back and try other entrees. I am very confused with all the high ratings of this restaurant. The atmosphere here is mediocre and very unsanitary from our experience. Came here one evening to see what all the great reviews were about. We ordered food to go which I'm glad we did because this establishment looked very run down, stains on walls, ceilings, floors and tables weren't cleared, so it was very uncomfortable in terms of cleanliness. Additionally, we were shocked when we entered the restaurant to see floor fans running as this is a health code violation. Additionally, at the front of the store, it is surrounded by transients and public drug users, so fellow Yelpers be warned for safety concerns. Food was abismal (terrible). Lettuce within our eggs rolls order was dirty and not fresh. Price is low, but I guess you get what you pay for. read more

The price to eat here is amazing, especially nowadays. We ordered the Bún Riêu, Bánh Xèo, and Bánh Canh and $0.25 for a water cup. All three were delicious. The food was gorgeous and came with a lot of Vietnamese greens on the side to eat with. I seasoned my dish additionally with some lemon and fish sauce. The total was $30 flat for my party of three. The portions are decently large for the average person, and we had plenty of leftovers to bring home too. The outside is not very special, but inside was filled with customers and minimally decorated. The food was brought out extremely fast and the worker was friendly. Lots of togo options or sit down. I've eaten here a couple of times already. The first time I ordered the banh xeo and egg rolls. I couldn't believe their prices, cheapest banh xeo in town. I ordered the braised pork with egg to go. Banh xeo was not bad and enough for one meal. It comes with the fixings (lettuce, mint, etc.) 4 egg rolls for $5, can't beat that. I wanted to get the spring rolls, banh khot and banh beo but it wasn't available until the weekend. The braised pork was yum. So of course I come back on a weekend. I ordered the spring rolls, banh khot, and banh canh. The waiter just took the spring rolls from the togo section and gave it to me without unwrapping it and serving it on a plate. I thought it was weird to serve it to me like that. The food the second time around was not good so I wouldn't get those dishes again but I would come back for the banh xeo. read more

As of last week, prices for all their noodle soups have increased to $10 and above a bowl. The food is still the most authentic Viet in So Cal, but their bowls are smaller than average. I normally eat one a half bowls to get my fill for lunch, so $15 for lunch. I guess I had high expectations coming here from all the great reviews and rating. I've heard so much about viet food in Little Saigon so we ordered alot! Banh Xeo, 2 banh khot, banh bot loc, banh beo, bun Cha Hanoi, and fried sweet potatoes with prawns. They came back to tell us that they ran out of banh beo and banh bot loc. Nooooooooo! I guess those are the ones to order if you come here or call ahead and place your orders. There's a tip for you. Banh Xeo was just okay. Very crispy, but lacked the pickled veggies and cucumbers that usually get offered everywhere else. It looked huge when you get it, but when you flip it open, you notice that they didn't fold it evenly and the proportions of meat to crepe was off. Banh khot was alright as well. Crispy and had a nice sized shrimp in the middle, but that was all. It was a little hard and drier in the middle than I'm used to. Fried sweet potatoes with prawns came all separated. They're not in a fritter shape like how my parents made them. Bun Cha was unmemorable. Flat dry meatball in an oily sauce. We left here full from all that we ordered, but really unsatisfied. This is a hole in the wall that served Vietnamese foods that are reasonably priced. Their foods are good across the board but nothing that is outstanding so you can't go wrong in any choices. Our family has been here multiple times and if you like fresh greens this is the place. My wife likes the fried shrimps with fried sweet potatoes which you can wrapped in their abundance of vegetables with fish sauce. Their specialty is Vietnamese pancakes or banh xeo but it lacks the proteins but reasonably tasty. Most of the other items my sons and I had is so so and not outright wow you. If your reputation is based off one dish and you don't deliver, it stands to reason that you will have dissenting opinions. Here is one such occasion. Van's Restaurant is an old restaurant in an old strip mall in the greater Little Saigon area of Westminster / Garden Grove. Somehow, I had managed not to try this over my many years visiting the area. I finally found the occasion this week during a meal with family friends. Word of mouth and word of Yelp strongly suggested that the Banh Xeo ($6.50), a Vietnamese stuffed crepe named after the sound of sizzling batter, is the must-try dish at this restaurant. What it doesn't lack are size and crunchy texture. It's more appropriate for sharing than for a solo endeavor, and you'll want to portion out the lettuce wrap and fragrant herbs appropriately. It does have a reasonable amount of protein inside as well, so that's not an issue. The problems start with the thickness. The shell should be way thinner. As a result, even though the exterior remains crispy for long enough, the inside becomes a little undercooked, and the overall feel is just a touch too heavy. Also, I don't seem to recall much coconut milk flavor in the batter, whereas most recipes traditionally incorporate it. Lastly, there is a lack of mung beans and, more importantly for me, an overabundance of bean sprouts. I would rather be able to enjoy a balance of all of the ingredients. I did not eat just this dish, of course. I also ordered a go-to fave, Com Bo Luc Lac ($7.95). This appears to be extraordinarily cheap for this sort of dish, and the reason becomes apparent as soon as you see it. The beef portion is way too small. Just bump the price up and give me enough of that surprisingly tender meat, please! I had over half of my rice remaining by the end. And although the sauce is quite delicious, the meat itself should be properly seasoned. The last dish to arrive, Banh Tom Co Ngu ($6.50), is ironically also more appropriately used as an appetizer or shared course. It's actually quite enjoyable if you're looking for a properly executed stack of crispy and fluffy sweet potato fries, with a bonus helping of fried shrimp. However, the dish should be a cohesive nest of sweet potato, so minus points for form factor. If they did try to pan-fry this dish, then they missed the mark because the batter was low. On the other hand, if they threw everything into a deep-fryer, then they might as well go all-out and Americanize the recipe with a truffle aioli. Frankly, Van's Restaurant is actually a great place for cheap lunch dishes with texture and flavor. Service was fast too. Locals on a budget should definitely give it a try! However, I am an out-of-towner looking for can't-miss experiences. Van's is not a bastion of authentic, top-quality Vietnamese dishes. Therefore, ultimately, I don't really plan to return. read more

This place has been around since the 80s or maybe even longer than that. My favorite dish they offer here is their banh xeo, a Vietnamese kind of crispy crepe made with rice flour tinted with turmeric and filled with bite sized morsels of fatty pork belly and shrimps along with bean sprouts. At Vans from time to time they offer young mustard leaves instead of lettuce to wrap their banh xeo which is the proper way to eat this dish in my opinion. What I love about their banh xeo is its crispiness. It's the most crispy banh xeo in the entire So Cal, and trust me, I tried many and none could measure up to Vans on the crispy chart. Most of the workers here are Hispanic who can speak and understand Vietnamese amazingly well. I also noticed Vans has a low turnover with their workers so they must be treating them well enough for them to stick around. They also sell these Vietnamese snacks like mini banh tet, banh gio, meat loaves and xoi bap to go, so after filling your belly with banh xeo you can buy some of the snacks to fill up later at home. read more

This is one of the pillars in Orange County for Vietnamese food. I think they've been here for at least 30-40 years in the building with the "blue roof". Their claim to fame is the Banh Xeo FTW! The best crispy and delicious banh xeo even if you can only eat it to-go for now. They have numerous other dishes you can order to go, but the Banh Xeo shines. Besides the Banh Xeo, another high point of this place is you can get so many different delicious vietnamese treats that are wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. You can get pork in a banana leaf (cha lua), you can get rice, beans, or banana wrapped (banh chung/banh tet) and others as well. Everything is affordable and delicious tasting!
