Not sure what all the hype is about - unfortunately, I ordered a single-origin pour over, and it was the worst, most over-extracted and yet one-note coffee I've ever had. For the price, I'm shocked and disappointed that they call it a "pour over" and charge a premium, yet they use an automated machine dripper to make the coffee. Normally I'd chalk it up to the barista having an off day, but given that no barista was involved in the pour-over technique and it still ended up bad I'm imagining they're all like this. read more

Great to have Verve here in the city! This location can get busy in the mornings now that seating has opened back up, many people do come here to work. I love Verve, except having to look for parking. The modern atmosphere is welcoming. Just on upper market, right as you enter The Castro, you can enjoy a delicious 1+1. My favorite thing to order here. A double shot of espresso hand pulled is split into a single shooter and a macchiato for sipping. Don't forget to grab a pastry to ensure you won't go hungry. A local roaster from just down in Santa Cruz, Verve knows what they're doing. TLDR: Good coffee, extensive menu, bright and airy atmosphere, very few seats. Long-time passerby, first time visitor today. I really love the amount of natural light that pours into this place thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows all around. The menu is extensive and offers lots of options. Overwhelmed by the variety of drinks at my disposal, I opted for the nitro cold brew on ice. Less than a minute later, the drink was in my hand and I was ready to grab a seat. That's when I realized how small the space was, offering seats for about two dozen folks (comfortably) across high-tops, tables, and window booths. I stood by the window for about five minutes before someone got up to leave, giving me a place to sit. Looking out at the fall foliage on Market Street was a nice reprieve from the book I dove into for three hours. When I went to leave, I tried to use the restroom (they only have one) but saw a piece of tape on the door with the words "out of order" written in sharpie. People kept walking in and out of the hallway so I couldn't tell if the sign was out of date, or if everyone else did what I did and turned around after reading it. Hope it's back in order next time because I loved spending my afternoon here! read more

I didn't try any food (if it were even offered here, I don't recall) but I did try the nitro cold brew. I wasn't a fan of it, but the way coffee tastes can very from place to place. I'm not holding this against them though, I just won't return to try the nitro again. Also, make sure you state no ice if you order nitro. Friendly service and my current go-to iced latte! I'm not too adventurous when it comes to coffee--I've found that lattes tend to suit me best. I keep it simple with my order at Verve: iced latte, no add-ons (e.g. sugar, flavors, etc.), and typically with oat milk (sometimes regular). I won't bore you with unnecessary fluff about the notes or mouthfeel, I'm no expert. I find Verve's iced latte to be perfectly balanced--creamy with just the right amount of coffee taste. It comes in just one size that I have found to be quite generous compared to other coffee shops in the city, at a comparable price. I'm always greeted warmly by the staff, and I love the space. I'm not a coffee drinker at all, but needed something to wake me up on my morning walk. The space is aesthetically pleasing with a lot of natural light, which freshens up the setting. They have plenty of plants instilled around the sleek countertops --very neat space and design. I just had a cup of Chai with Almond Milk ($4.25) to-go and was on my way. This isn't the best place to study or work though as there isn't too much space though. On the other hand, great to people watching as it's situated on a corner with floor to ceiling glass windows all around. read more

Verve Coffee Roasters is a small, minimal space that offers your typical coffee options as well as some nice light food choices. My boyfriend and I stopped here one morning during our visit to SF to fuel up for the day. I ordered a latte and a piece of quiche, and he got a pour over and the daily toast, which had ricotta and plenty of greens. The guy at the counter was super friendly, helpful, and patient, which was refreshing as I find sometimes the customer service at places like this can be lacking. The pour over came with a little card that includes the variety's flavor profile notes, cup characteristics, producer, region, process, and cultivar. I'm not a coffee snob by any means but I still thought this was cool. The latte was your typical latte, creamy and delicious. My personal favorite part of our visit was the quiche. When I ordered, I was informed that the slices are served at room temp and asked if that was okay, which I really appreciated. The quiche was so intensely creamy and rich that it almost felt more like a dessert, which sounds weird but it was packed with flavor from the salty bacon and so decadent. Definitely not an every day option for me but a nice vacation treat. The daily toast was just okay, not a whole lot of flavor and I thought it could have used more seasoning. Ordered the espresso tonic and thought it was quite good - was not as much a fan of an iced pour over my friend got, but the hot pour overs look so good! This avocado toast was sooooooo good! Possibly my favorite in the city (rivaled only by spro's truffle bomb). Such a joy to look at with its pink/green contrast, and a massive amount of avocado for one slice of toast. I also had the nitro flash brew which was a little acidic for me, so I'll probably try a simple latte the next time i return for another round of this toast. If I'm not mistaken - and I often am - this is Verve's only retail presence in the city, and it's a prominent spot at the much traversed corner of Market and Church. Most of their cafes are in Santa Cruz, where co-founders Ryan O'Donovan and Colby Barr base their operations, and Tokyo of all places, where I think I saw one of their cafes in Shinjuku. In other words, they may be Blue Bottling toward Starbucks territory but there was no evidence of racial profiling yet at the Castro location. Just more of a preference for them to serve the local hipster populace from what I could tell from their droning chatter. I suppose I should have gone for one of their coffee specialties since they appeared to have all the shiny hardware necessary to prepare them (photo: http://bit.ly/2JkpKSO). However, I was in the mood for tea on a blustery day when I was a bit on the forlorn side. I went for a $4 cup of their Rooibos which was advertised as having elements of caramel and nectar and being 'bodied' whatever that means. I know you have good coffee but your food items are spectacular as well! Went with the missile coffee which was like a lighter version of a latte. Not overly sweet. One of the best cafes in SF! The interior was beautifully decorated with art and plants and had great lighting from the big windows on Market. I also love how the cafe has a more communal set up instead of small individual tables like many in the city do. 4/5 I love going to Verve for grabbing a good cup of coffee and unwinding. Their prices are a little high and don't love that their milk alternatives are so expensive. But their coffee always hits and satisfies my craving. The ambiance inside is gorgeous and has plenty of lighting. It's a kind of noisy space so better for socializing or reading than serious work. The seating is also a little lacking for working there, however, they do have some outlets to use. I'd recommend this place to meet someone or just grab a coffee for yourself! read more

The location is really cute! Right on Market Street and only a 10-15 min straight walk from the Castro. The shop space felt very clean and lively, especially with all the plants surrounding the seating area. The pastry case also looked delectable - filled with tons of fresh croissants, donuts, and other pastries. I got a decaf almond milk cappucino, and was a little underwhelmed by my drink. Though coffee really came through, there wasn't much crema or foam to enjoy. :( Otherwise, Verve wasn't a bad place to visit. read more

I love the ambiance, coffee quality and vibe of the space but the biggest painpoints were a) limited table space and b) prices being high relative to the local and larger market. 1) Very Limited Table Seating: There are only enough seats for about 6-8 people to sit at a table for working or socializing. I found this troubling given the volume of foot traffic and poor souls I saw hawking and circling for places to sit and work. 2) Price are High Relative to the Local Market: The coffee was about 30% more than most other coffee places for a regular cup and the refills were over 2x-3x more expensive than competitors in the market. These two points, when taken together, are a bit disappointing as a customer and someone who chose this place based on its strong yelp reviews. I patronized and tipped. But for my expensive cup of coffee I couldn't even get a seat to enjoy it in or do some of the work I stopped by to take care of. read more

Tried the Verve in Santa Cruz and loved it. Discovered there was a location in San Francisco so decided to make a pit stop before heading to Bernal Heights Park (look for my review of that soon). Went here at 5pm on a Sunday. I'm most familiar with the Mission Bay area so the Castro is still relatively new to me. I'm not sure if it's right but the Verve building seemed to fit in - then again, keeping the brick exterior helps. Cleanliness (4/5): very thing I noticed when I walked in was the well-stocked and clean pastry case. Condiment bar is stocked and clean as well. While I was sitting, a barista came by the tables to pick up used cups and plates. Customer Connection (3/5): cashier was friendly and nice. Nothing exceptional. Service/Product Quality (4/5): ordered an Iced Coffee and it was delicious! Most iced coffees i've tried need a little bit of cream or sugar because of a strong burnt flavor or acidity. This one didn't. I forgot to ask which blend it is. I wish there was more complexity though. read more

You know how long I've waited for Verve to be in the Bay Area? Santa Cruz was just too far for me. I was so excited the news of the SF location. For a while, I got my Verve fix from the Fremont Whole Foods because they happened to sell Verve beans. At work, we bring in different beans and Verve has consistently been one of our top faves! Now that I live in SF, Verve is much closer - so yay for easy access to beans AND drinks! The location is pretty easy to once you are on the Muni - it's off of Market and right near the Church Station. Whenever I'm near the area, I would stop by for a latte and a little snack if I feel a little fancy (food is a little pricey...but I guess that's SF for you). The decor is nice and it has a pretty open space. The bathroom is spacious and usually clean. There is wifi if anyone is interested in that. Seating is a bit hard, but there are areas where you can stand and enjoy your drink. This is a great place to not only enjoy coffee, but to catch up with friends or do a bit of work (if you are lucky to get a seat!). Staff is pretty nice and chill! I was surprised that one of the baristas remembered me after one visit a few weeks ago. Either she had really good memory, or I must be very memorable. ;) read more
