    Pate chaud
    Mia Y.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST PATE CHAUD OF YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!!! Imagine the flakiest and most buttery pastry with a rich, deep, pork mixture that's full of flavor and black pepper. A lot of pate chaud I've had is just a steamed meatball inside. This place it's ground pork that's so flavorful and you just need to try this for yourself. Almost feels like an egg roll filling. Holy moly I can eat like 5 in one sitting. My mom and I love grabbing a couple pate so and a large sugar can drink to share. This is your no nonsense type of viet place! Service has been excellent every time I come! They have Apple Pay too!! Come here!!!!

The good: I tried the pate chaud pastries for 90 cents each. The price is great and the pate chaud were served warm! I tried the taro, durian, vegetarian and pork. Sugar cane drinks here are $6 which I thought was fair. The drink is decently large. I like the flakey and buttery puff pastry of the pate chaud. The vegetarian pate chaud tastes of mushroom and some crunchy vegetables. The bad: You must pay cash if your order is under $20. Milk teas and coffee drinks are on the expensive side at $6. The durian pastry didn't taste like durian. It was rather bland. The taro pastry was a bit on the dry side. I asked for 3 of each flavor but only got 4 of the 5 flavors. They left out the coconut ones. There is no indoor nor outside dining areas. This is strictly a to-go place. One worker here didn't have his mask on and the other one had her mask under her nose. The nuoc mia (sugar cane drink) sign outside makes some bold claims about curative properties ("cures acne" and "cures febrile disorders") of the drink. FDA regulations prohibit the advertising of food items as curative of diseases. The parking lot can get busy and tight. The interesting: They put colored dots on the outside the pastry so you know what the interior is. You can ask for the pastries to be bagged separately. The square ones are meat.

Vien Dong Sugar Cane is on my go to list for its savory tasting pate chaud (bánh pate so) and eggrolls (chả giò) what is so amazing is the price at $1.14 per piece for both whereas you'll be paying a lot more than that save yourself the time by coming out here instead you won't be disappointed. I loved pate chaud comes in taro, coconut, veggies and durian pork is my favorite and I can taste the savory buttery flake crispy and tender. Their main specialty: Sugar cane drinks only had once before I opt for Vietnamese iced coffee at $4 can't get any cheaper than that a real penny saver for those on a tight budget. Vien Dong Sugar Cane has been around for over 15 years definitely needs remodeling no dine-in or outdoor seating would come back best time early in the morning avoid coming out in the afternoon weekends good luck in finding a parking space. By the way there's a second Viên Đông down on the same corner block that one has a large interior and they served hot plates.

Bought two puff pork pastry's cause they ran out of the veggie rolls. They're super cheap (70 cents each), however I had to pay a $1 credit card fee for purchases under $20. Pastry was really good I'm about to get another after I finish this review.

Came by for some snacks the other day and they were quite tasty. The fried egg rolls with pork and pork Pate Chaud we're 70 cents each. The fried egg roll was delicious with a meaty filling using a wonton wrapper....if only they used the rice paper wrapper.. The Pate Chaud was okay...didn't taste super fresh...no worries as it was only 70 cents. Staff was friendly.

Mr. NSS is a huge music and sports geek. He's also a human calculator. Throw any number at him, ask him to multiply it, divide it, you name it, and you'll get an answer faster than punching in the numbers yourself into a calculator. His food knowledge? It's as bad as my geography. When I first met him, he didn't know what a banh mi was, much less a quesadilla. WTF right? I give him sh*t for this all the time. But he puts me in my place by reminding me of how I once drove into a curb...with parking sensors. Luckily, there were no parking casualties while looking for parking at Vien Dong. It was a blistering 90 degrees the day we went to Vien Dong. It's a dingy, hole-in-the-wall that sells juices (known for their nuoc mai, sugar cane juice), smoothies, banh mi's, waffles, pate chauds and various Vietnamese prepared snacks. Cash only. I bought a bunch of pate chauds, a Vietnamese savory pork puff pastry and one durian puff pastry (50 cents each). To cool off, I also ordered a large strawberry sugarcane juice ($4). Don't expect a smiling face. Service was curt. I told the lady, we came from SF because I heard great things about their pate chaud. She gave me an eye roll. Being hot weather pansies, we run back into the car to put our face into the a/c and for me to take by obligatory food pics. Me: "Want some pate chaud?" Mr. NSS: "Isn't pate like liver? Yuck." Me: "Yea but this isn't that kind of pate...just try it, it's really good." Mr. NSS: "No, thanks." I had to go pee pee so we stopped by a gas station. *Goes back into car and looks over to Mr. NSS* Me: "Ummm, did you eat a pate chaud?" Mr. NSS: "No, I don't like liver." Me: "Because you have pastry crumbs ALL over your face and a piece hanging off of your nose." *Opens bag* Me: "Dude, there's NOTHING left!" Mr. NSS: "Ohh, I was just doing a taste test for you...you can tell your Yelp followers, Mr. NSS approved." *thumbs up* Grrr.... OTHER NOTES: *Pate chaud was warm and super flaky with a savory pork meatball filling (not msg-y). --Cheap compared to other places that sell it for 80 cents to $1 each. *Skip the durian. It was grainy and not much durian stinkyness. *Sugarcane juice was too sweet but after letting it dilute in ice, it was a lot better. *One very dingy four-top inside.

Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2015 Vien Dong is a definite favorite in my Yelp Notebook. This my go to spot for bánh patê sô. Came here today, on a rainy Sunday and picked up bánh patê sô for my family and family friends. I noticed the had a triangle shaped puff pastry next to the bánh patê sô, I inquired only to find out those were sweet puff pastry desserts that come in three flavors- coconut, durian and taro. The dessert puff pastries were fantastic. Last year my uncle's father in law father passed away. My normal go to spot for bánh patê sô couldn't accommodate my need for 3 dozen bánh patê sô on short notice, which led me to drive further to Vien Dong which isn't close to my home (but well worth the drive). We arrived early on a weekday morning and were able to pick up 3 dozen bánh patê sô with no problem, a bánh mi pork sandwich for my hubs breakfast and a iced coffee for me. Sometimes there is a language barrier but the customer service is top notch. If Debbie the owner is around (she speaks fluent English) you can inquire about catering orders and such. Deliciously made bánh patê sô, great iced coffee, sandwiches and other snacks combined with good customer service make this one of my favorite mom and pop shops to patronize!!! Noelle's Notes 50 cents for small dessert puff pastries Love this shop!!!! Cash only

I was urged not to talk about the pate chaud from Vien Dong. However, seeing that it's not even really a secret on Yelp, I'll go ahead and write my review. This shop nominally specializes in sugar cane juice. They also have a few other foods and drinks. However, I have not tried any of those items. The only reason that I went today is their awesome and really cheap pate chaud. You can have not just one, but two of these goodies for a dollar. The pate chaud are square, in contrast to the circular kinds that most other places make. Each side is about two inches. The puff pastry is ridiculously good and is easy to bite through, and it gets even better if you pop it in the oven when you get home. Just make sure to order enough so that you don't run out by the time you get there. The ground pork is easier to chew than other places, although I actually feel more of the diced onion and water chestnut in my mouth when I'm munching on one of these goodies. There's definitely less pork here than in most other pate chaud that I've had. My biggest issue, however, is that the pate chaud really lacks in pepper and garlic. I can see the pepper, but I can't taste it. Still, cheap sometimes just wins. This is definitely one of those times. You will forget about the deficiencies by the time you've eaten several of these pastries in a row. Trust me.

The shop itself is on the small side, with a couple tables for indoor seating and no outdoor seating. The interior boasts a curious modern-industrial vibe that I found pleasant and unique. Though I was lucky enough to grab a good spot, this isn't a prime study location--there aren't many outlets, they close at 5 (so not ideal for 9-to-5ers) and the seating is a little limited. That said, there is free WiFi and bathroom access, so if you have a well-charged laptop and a bit of luck, it's not a bad pick. Their offerings include a mid-sized array of espresso-based and tea-based drinks alongside a small selection of pastries. Though the pastries looked decent, I abstained in favor of the black sesame latte, which I liked a lot. The black sesame cream top is very delicious, though once it settles into the drink it can get a bit grainy with the coarser bits of black sesame. I really liked that it wasn't too sweet, but I wish the espresso was stronger. The drinks are on the somewhat pricier side at $7-$8 (though it feels as though I'm seeing this price range very often these days), and I feel that it is just on the cusp of being a little too much for what I am getting. While the drinks are fun and pretty good, the coffee itself doesn't stand out a ton. I definitely need to try more drinks to form a more cohesive opinion, though. Overall, it's a pretty solid spot, and they offer a fun array of some more standard café offerings alongside some unique signature and special crafted drinks. They did get my name wrong (even after I spelled it out for them), but other than that, the service was friendly and fast. I'll definitely swing by again if I can find the time.
