I made it for the first time last night, and will certainly be making it a new part of my dance habit... (The next ones are June 13 and July 4, I think.) This month there was an intermediate class at 7 and beginner class at 8; the teachers were helpful and engaging, and found a good balance between fun and challenging for classes with a pretty wide range of skill levels. Social dancing was from 9 to midnight. The DJ, one of my favorites from Swing Central, played a great mix -- he always seems to do a good job paying attention to the energy of the room and varying the mood and tempo accordingly, keeping people happily dancing for the whole night. They're at a new venue in Burlingame starting this spring, which is a nice space for dancing. The dance floor is smooth and feels spacious although it's not huge; it stayed pretty busy for most of the dance, but in a way that mostly felt intimate rather than crowded. There's a kitchen area off to one side, with water and some snacks, and a kind of lobby area near the entrance that was good for cooling off and chatting. Unlike some other dances, where the really good dancers tend to keep to themselves in one corner, here people were doing a lot of mingling, even more so than at Swing Central. I'm pretty shy, but got asked to dance several times, and found many people approachable enough to do some asking myself.

The kitchen whips up a wide variety of fresh salads, paninis (my favorites are the meatloaf, roast beef, caprese, thai chicken, and autostrada), wraps, and house-made desserts. My husband ordered the Tempranillo and I had the Albariño. Neither was enjoyable; both tasted harsh and overly alcoholic rather than balanced or flavorful. Even the presentation missed the mark. The glassware felt dated and unattractive, which only added to the overall feeling that the restaurant is past its prime. Unfortunately, this was not a memorable meal for the right reasons. About once a month, Kohl Mansion hosts musical performances (chamber concerts) in the Great Hall, a very intimate setting nothing like a symphony hall. Think of a Victorian era sitting room/parlour with a gloriously high ceiling and this is what you get - musicians on a slightly raised stage in front of a (non-operational) fireplace, and just several rows of seats surrounding the stage on 3 sides. I felt like I was enjoying my favorite Beethoven string quartet in a Beauty-and-the-Beast setting. You know what I'm talking about - that scene with the Beast sitting in front of the fireplace w/ the doggy footrest? Concert performances start at 7pm, but their resident musicologist, Kai Christiansen, gives a pre-concert talk at 6pm. If you are under 30, you are really in for a treat in the form of a generous discount - their "Gen Y & Z" discount tickets are only $15, compared to $45 for adult and $42 for senior tickets. To my fellow under-30 yelpers... get on this before you make it over the 30+ hill!! The parking lot fills to capacity with concert-goers so I recommend arriving no later than 6:30pm to ensure you get a parking spot. Complimentary refreshments are served after the concert - e.g. wine, cheese, charcuterie, fruit & other finger foods. One of the best refreshment spreads I've ever seen to be honest...without sounding too gluttonous. ;) You can meet and mingle with the musicians at this post-concert reception. Receptions are staffed by Mercy High School parents and students and community volunteers. The 2014-15 series will be the 32nd consecutive season, and features local, nationally and internationally-distinguished ensembles. In addition to our concert series, we provide school performances, master classes, coaching to approximately 5,000 local students as well as community outreach through our partners at the San Mateo Public Library and Peninsula Jewish Community Center. Our office, located on the campus of Mercy High School in the Kohl Mansion is open Tuesday through Thursday, but messages will be answered throughout the week. I wish that there was a live orchestra, but this was my first time going and I don't understand much about this group. It was a recording that they danced to. We were able to offer a second helping of rigatoni and prime rib. The prime rib was A little fatty but was tender. I enjoyed The salmon even thought it was small and not overcooked. I think the restaurant could have made up for this if they added bread and butter and perhaps a salad. We were able to stay, mingle and dance in that private room for the entire afternoon which was an added bonus. Everyone had a good time and the staff cut and plated the cake for all. The room for pretty heated even when the windows were open even with the four ceiling fans running. Otherwise, everyone had a fun afternoon. Thank you sixteen mile house!
