I guess I'll start this off by saying I truly wanted to adore these cupcakes to the fullest. Sometimes things are not as they seem. I discovered Viva Los Cupcakes via the Smorgasbord Instagram account. They're a very popular cupcake vendor and friends even hashtagged me in the VLC account. I gave them a follow and knew I had to try them someday soon. These cupcakes are known for selling out. Two hours after they opened their stand for business and they were left down to one cupcake which was quickly snatched up by a customer. They had more coming soon so I stood by patiently and viewed their postcard menu. The flavors looked amazing and appeared to be authentic Mexican flavors. I couldn't wait!! There were only 4 flavors available so I eagerly grabbed a 6 pack and added an extra of two flavors. I bought the following flavors to try out: - horchata - tamal con mole - conchita - Pirueta de limon I paced myself and first tried half of the horchata. To my dismay , the cake was dry. The cupcake on a whole tasted NOTHING like horchata. I was disappointed. I waited for my palate to clear and moved on the the next one. The conchita cupcake is such an adorable concept. The top of it looks like the top of a pink concha. Conchas have never failed me. Unfortunately this cupcake did. It was dry yet again and I kept searching for that conchita flavor. I was 0 - 2. Next I tried the tamal con mole. Holy heck I wish I'd known that the mole frosting would be spicy!! One bite and I jumped back with a cough. I'm super sensitive to spices or anything hot. I don't remember mole being so spicy. Again, another dry cupcake and I was not a fan of the frosting whatsoever. Presentation was great, I liked the detail of the two corn husk pieces. Lastly, I tried the flavor of the month, the pirueta de limon. This last cupcake finally had somewhat of a redeeming flavor . Not enough to make me finish the entire cupcake. The concept of these cupcakes is amazing. I wish I'd been able to taste the flavors in them. They seem to have a strong following via social media. As for me, I won't try them again and if anyone wishes to order them for parties or catering , I suggest doing a taste test first . read more

Viva Los Cupcakes was pretty yummy! I took my first bite and I was instantly happy--like instantly. They were at the LA taco festival, this is where I had the opportunity to try their cupcakes. There were two vegan cupcakes and I went with the cinnamon one. Cinnamon helps with lowering the chances of ones blood sugar spiking--this was my reasoning for choosing this one. This review is a long time coming since I've had these cupcakes on several occasions. The first time I tried them was at The Wall in dtla right outside the flower mart. We bought a variety and split them. My personal favorites were the horchata and margarita. My mom preferred the tamal de mole which is not bad, It actually had the corn tamal taste to it I just prefer my sweets to be sweet. Overall great flavors and cake consistency. Yo, how are there so many poor reviews on these cupcakes? Perhaps it's because some folks aren't used to the flavor profile of Mexican classics? Anyway, I've been fan girling or following Viva Los Cupcakes on IG for at least a year now. I almost bought a cupcake for the first time at ConchaCon but they were sold out, wasn't meant to be that day. Yesterday, I copped a dozen at Smorgasburg to try all flavors and share with my family. The flavors we tried are Churro, Mazapan, Tamal con Mole, and Mango Loca (three of each). They were all yummy and contrary to many reviews, our cupcakes were hella moist. My bf's fave was the mazapan, he enjoyed the mazapan crumbs on the icing. His sis loved the churro cupcake, perfect and moist. I didn't get to try that one LOL that's how fast they disappeared at my home. I was eyeing the tamale con mole and I thought it was dope, my bf's sis really enjoyed that one too. The presentation was also hella cute with the hojas de tamale on the side. I thought the frosting was perfect, tastes like mole some sweetness, some spices but it's not spicy like other comments have mentioned, but that's relative. I was nervous about the Mango flavor because it seemed like too much texture going on with the nuts and salsaghetti filing but I enjoyed that one too! I wouldn't elect to buy that one over the other three but it was good! Bottom line, these are not your ordinary vanilla or chocolate cupcakes. They're bomb AF and have complex flavors like the cuisines they represent. My fam is hooked and we'll be going back to Smorgasburg just for these cupcakes. Wanted to see what the hype was all about since everyone talks about these cupcakes. Cupcakes weren't worth the price they're so small I'm not expecting a huge cupcake either but they're smaller then a regular size cupcake. Tres leche cupcake was falling apart because it was too moist for the size but it tasted good I did find some weird plastic rubber piece in the cupcake I purchased wasn't happy about that. Tamal con mole was basically corn bread with mole paste on it just sweater then the usual mole paste, I do agree the mole overpowered the bread so all you taste is the mole. Churro con cajeta was good, this one did taste like a churro Had the April flavor of the month Duvalin this one was my favorite tasted like a true duvalin. My poor fiancé, I drag him all over town for the latest thing I found on Instagram that I HAVE to try. Fortunately, he's Hispanic and he was into the idea of cupcakes with the traditional Mexican flavors that he loves, so this one was an easy sell. Sadly, like most things that seem too good to be true, this was a bust. We tried the Cajeta, Conchita, and Tamal con Mole cupcakes at Smorgasburg in LA and were disappointed. They look SO beautiful and are flavors that we love, but the taste just falls short. I am OBSESSED with conchitas and found this cupcake to taste not only nothing like a conchita, but like nothing at all. No seriously, almost no flavor. The cajeta was ok to good. I really liked the filling but didn't care for the frosting. The Tamal con Mole had such great potential but fell flat. The frosting was good, but the cupcake tasted like corn bread. I came across this cupcake stand at Smorgasburg and they had a vegan tamale con mole cupcake which I bought for $3. The presentation was beautiful and had an attention to detail as they added sesame seeds on top of the mole icing and small husk piece on the side for aesthetics. The cake had a corn bread taste and consistency which blended well with the taste of the mole but the cupcake as a whole was decent. A couple of my friends jokingly said that the mole on top looked like a healthy pile of steaming excrement. Same as everyone else's reviews that have been following based of IG, and other media's. The cupcakes have great presentation and grab your attention due to the fact that they look great. Once you take a bite and try them, they are very deceiving. It's like if you would buy a chocolate cookie, that looks like chocolate, smells like chocolate and looks like chocolate but once you bit I to it it tastes like a something other than chocolate. I give them a 10 for presentation and integration of the Mexican culture. But taste and price somewhat disappointing. Tried these cupcakes when they came to an event in San Diego. I first tried them at a store opening and then again at a festival in North Park. I've had both the Nesquick one and the churro one. Staff took a phone call right before the transaction and made me wait almost 10 min. But before ordering didn't let me know that they are only accepting Zelle or PayPal. Then there was an issue with Zelle, shows the staff and says this is your fault this has never happened to her before, (app said the small business wasn't taking debit card payments). I said okayyy let me try again it said the same thing, said to call the bank to finish the transaction (bank was closed it was 7 pm). I purchased their Mixed Dozen for $38 at the Feria de los Moles in LA. Let me tell you NEVER again the Horchata one tasted nothing like horchate and it was super dry. The Conchita one also dry and tasted nothing like a concha. The Tamal con Mole, again dry tasted nothing like a tamal and the mole frosting had a wierd taste not like mole and to spicy. Saw Viva Los Cupcakes in Canoga Park so we decided to give them a try. The Tamal Con Mole did not taste like a Tamal yet alone Mole. Cake was a bit dense, not fluffy at all. I cant explain the flavor because honestly the Mole frosting was so overpowering that you couldn't taste the spices, just sweet and dense. The Conchita, my son, daughter, and I were so excited to try this, especially because we love conchitas. This was such a disappointment, this cupcake did not taste like a conchita at all. Again the cupcake was dense, the topping which we thought would be exactly like the topping they use on a Conchita, was nowhere near the taste of the the topping they put on top of the conchita. I would love to be able to describe the taste of this cupcake but all I can think is sweet and nowhere near a conchita. The Mazapan is the one cupcake that I will say was good but it did not taste like the mexican Mazapan. Instead it tasted like a peanut butter cupcake, a bit dense but overall good flavor. The frosting was good but a bit too sweet for my taste. The Guanaba cupcake was beyond sweet and I think they may have used the same cupcake recipe as the conchita. Watched a little video about Viva Los Cupcakes and was intrigued by the Mexican inspired flavors. Made the trip to SmorgasburgLA to give them a try. We got one of each of the flavors that were available. Duvalin, tamale & mole, marzapan and concha. All were very tasty with great flavors. The tamale & mole was a miss for me. Tasted too much like corn bread and the mole frosting was a little overpowering. Duvalin was spot on. Tasted just like the candy. Looking forward to trying a few of their other advertised flavors that were not available on the day I visited. read more

These cupcakes were so good that upon biting into them I laughed in that kind of deliriously happy way that is typically brought on by puppies or cute babies. All of your faves like mole, churros, jamaica, and tamarindo turned into cupcake form--so inventive, so delicious, and so fun! The first time I heard of Viva Los Cupcakes, I could not help but feel pride and happiness to see someone incorporating our cultura into their food, plus, my inner child screamed for them! (I love sweets). I had the concha, the churro, the mole, and the mazapan when they were at the Tamale Festival in Riverside. Let me just start off by saying that they did not disappoint. The concha tasted like a little conchita and I wished it wasn't like 200 degrees otherwise I would have dipped it in some cafe or chocolate. The churro was so good. It was filled with cajeta and topped with a yummy cinnamon and sugar coating (YUM!). The Mole was honestly the weirdest thing I have ever tasted and not in a bad way! It was just so unique and the actual cake is to die for!! I wanted to save the mazapan for last because genuinely, this is the BEST mazapan cupcake I have EVER had! The frosting was not too sweet, but sweet enough the it went perfect with the little cupcake. It was a match made in heaven! My family could not stop talking about it the rest of the day and even now we constantly bring it up. If you haven't tried this place, you definitely should! They are usually in the LA area, but take advantage if they happen to stop by your nearest city. I guarantee that they are worth the drive! Also, all of the cakes are spongie and moist!
