I ordered from this place for the first time last weekend. This was the first time ever, that I actually called Grubhub to ask how I would go about contacting the owner for a refund because the food was not like any Chinese food I had ever seen, and I've ordered from tons of Asian restaurants throughout LA (Still having a hard time finding one who beats Chang's on San Vicente in Brentwood!). The owner, of Volcano Wok, actually called me, however, I missed the call. He left a VM asking what was wrong with the food and was pissed I was given a refund for a dish. I sent him exactly what is below and was so surprised, he just ignored my issues! Not even, a thank you, or an acknowledgment--so this is the email I sent to the owner or whoever called me. This food, was one of the worst meals I have ever had delivered. For starters, the Kung Pao Tofu.... Was the most unappealing dish I've seen from a Chinese Restaurant! I couldn't even, make out what it was--looked nothing like Kung Pao anything. The sauces were nothing but a gelatinous goo that had a horrific color, taste, and after taste--it appeared to have come from a can or jar--was NOT homemade! There were NO peanut--nothing that one would expect in a Kung Pao dish. There was just wilted old tasting broccoli and gross peppers, drowning in this thick gooey sauce that resembled nothing I had ever seen. I held up a spoon, full of this sauce, and it wouldn't even fall off the spoon--it was that gelatinous. The tofu... so rubbery--it almost tasted, and had the consistency of being frozen and way past its expiration date! The tofu, was rubbery--edges were so dried and tough, that I was shocked your chef would send this food out! I still have the full container of the tofu dish--I had to spit it out, the dish was that bad. The Pepper Chicken dish, was quasi-salvageable. I took it out of the same gelatinous gooey sauce the Kung Pao tofu was in--again over kill with this sauce. There were no vegetables--other than a couple pieces of mushy and old zucchini and broccoli--and way to many peppers that were past their time, too! I had to perform surgery on that dish and threw out the orders of rice--hard, crusty, and dry and had the WORST after taste, I just made my own rice, steamed fresh veggies, and used the chicken--which again... old and funky tasting--I hope it was real chicken. Again, I am being honest with you because I want you to succeed and these food issues are something that you can change and fix. Nothing personal! I would seriously, speak with your chef! Take a look at your walk in and assess your produce and meats! I don't know if you use canned sauces, but I would stop, if you are allowing this--those sauces were like that gross canned gravy crap they sell in super markets! Try Chang's (NOT that gross PF Chang's chain), just Chang's on San Vicente in Brentwood. They're Kung Pao Tofu, nice big fresh wedges of tofu, you can get either crispy or soft--their crispy is to die for! Anyway... I sure hope this explains the issues with the food! Oh no! We passed up Subway to try this place instead? The madness! So paired with the beating sun and the long walk, we wanted to reward ourselves with some decent grease that day. (Ha! Who am I kidding?) We ended up @ Surf's Up Hawaiian BBQ which is a little place located in a strip mall off of Sunset & La Brea. Not much seating but it's manageable if you plan on grabbing a quick bite to eat. They've got decent prices that will make you hear evil thoughts. "Come hither Irma, come here and eat MY food!" Oh no....! Low and behold, I was lured in. I ordered Chow Mein ($3.99) & a side of broccoli. Chow Mein was 'meh' while the broccoli lacked taste in general. My friend ordered the Chicken Teriyaki bowl. Overall, this fused Hawaiian / Chinese establishment didn't make much of an impression on me but I'm sending them happy thoughts in hopes that one day it gets better. Shrimp Fried Rice - NOPE I have a hard time believing that my shrimp fried rice was from today, yesterday or even this week. I know week old rice when I taste it. Hard, crunchy, no flavor. Thanks for nothing. Pad Thai - NOPE My pad thai had absolutely no flavor. None at all. Bland. Bland. Bland. I might as well have eaten the paper towels that were in my kitchen. I wouldn't have noticed the difference. Coconut Smoothie - NOPE This place takes the "smooth" out of smoothie. My coconut smoothie had two large ice cubes in it. I think they need a new blender. This place is a bit strange, but it's not too bad - as long as you get the BBQ and stay away from the Chinese menu. Much like Ryan, I'm driving through the area and want something quick...so I see "Hawaiian BBQ" - which I usually dig. When I walk in, what I see is a steam tray display case with mostly scary-looking, or at best sad-looking, Chinese food. "Yeesh." Then I look up on the wall and see beautiful pictures of the made-to-order BBQ stuff I came looking for. Okay, now I get it...Hawaiian *and* Chinese. It's 3 p.m., so I dismiss timing as the cause for the wreckage of the Orient Express behind the glass...and I'm feeling somewhat adventurous. I place my order for a combo platter with chicken & beef, open up my wallet, and the lady has disappeared. So I'm just standing there at the counter with a dumb look on face, thinking, "You guys want some money? If this grub is free, can I at least get my soda?" A couple minutes later, the lady comes back out and calls a pick-up for someone else's order. I finally realize I'm supposed to go sit my ass down and wait to pay (and quench my thirst) until my order's ready. Okay. :-\ After my name is called and I finish the transaction, I pick up the tray with my drink and closed foam container - noticing it weighs about five pounds. Sit down, open it up, and there I discover three enormous slabs of meat, a big scoop of steamed rice, and of course a large glob of macaroni salad. It's truly a mountain of food, and it actually looks like the stuff I saw in the picture. Things might work out after all. Actually, things did work out okay. The grub was plentiful and decent. The meat was flavorful, especially the beef. The chicken was also pretty good too. (If you order it, just be aware this isn't breast meat - it's dark meat that has some fat and knuckles in it - which is really more suitable for this style [and price] of cooking.) The rice was nice and sticky, the way I like it, and I think I would have gone double on that in lieu of the macaroni. It was a *huge* amount of food, and with a drink it was about nine bucks. You can do much worse. Other than the questionable Chinese menu and the confusing ordering process, the only other complaint I have is the parking lot. We ordered delivery from Eat24. When I checked in on Yelp, I was quite shocked to see that this place only had 1 star. However, it had much higher ratings on Eat24, which is why we ordered. I was particularly stoked about the drink selection. Not only did they have our coveted Thai iced teas, they also had BOBA. There were no flavor selections on the online menu, but shortly after placing my order I received a call from the restaurant asking which flavor I would like. I ended up choosing coconut. The food arrived within the quoted time frame. We ordered Shrimp Tempura Rolls, Chicken Fried Rice, Tangerine Chicken, and Beef Ramen. I ate most of my meal in silence with my boyfriend because he was completely intoxicated with his beef ramen noodles. When I was able to snag a bite for myself, I couldn't deny him the right of food silence. They were absolutely delectable. Noodles, meat, broth and all. The Chicken Fried rice was surprisingly good. I was rather concerned after reading the Yelp review, because they were particular to mention that their rice tasted like it was a week old!! I'd have to deny that this was the case with our order. Not to mention the rice was plentiful. Sometimes I feel like when I order delivery, the rice is an item that easily gets jipped in quantity. The Tangerine Chicken was exactly what it was supposed to be, but on a personal level I wasn't too crazy about it because the tangerine was a little on the sweet side for me. I felt like I was eating candy. However, I cannot deny that it tasted like tangerines, because it did. I suppose I was looking for more of an orange, tangy chicken flavor. The Shrimp Tempura is where it all went wrong. Shrimp tempura is, without a doubt, one of our favorite types of sushi rolls to order. When we both took a bite, we had a moment of shock at the taste. This wasn't shrimp tempura at all! In fact, I wouldn't have been surprised if they told me it was the cucumber roll on their menu. All I tasted was cucumber and avocado. Even so, neither one of us could get past our first bite. Something was just off, I'd never order sushi from here again. Our drinks were definitely the highlight of the meal for me. I ordered the veggie fried rice and specified NO MEAT. When I got the order over 2 hours later, I was so hungry I ate it in a hurry and didn't notice at the time there were small shredded pieces of chicken. In the morning I woke up super sick to my stomach and in pain, so I checked the food to make sure it was not spoiled when I noticed the shredded chicken. I've been a vegetarian for over 12 years, needless to say I was so upset to find out my veggie rice had meat that I called Volcano Wok and was treated rudely and they hung up the phone on me.I will never ever order from them again and am seriously thinking of suing them. read more

In my ongoing quest to try every Hawaiian BBQ place I can find, I dragged my poor bf here the other night. I was immediately put on guard by the combination of Chinese fast-food and Hawaiian plate lunch--it's never a good sign when restaurant tries to do two things at once. We got the seafood combo plate (mahi-mahi, fried shrimp and BBQ chicken) and the shrimp with lobster sauce. The grilled chicken and fried shrimp were fine, if nothing special, but the mahi was dry and none too fresh. The macaroni salad was actually pretty good. As for the Chinese food, we got shrimp swimming in thickened egg drop soup with peas and carrots. Now that's just insulting--as if the cook either has no idea what lobster sauce is, or assumes his patrons don't. I've seen this at other crappy Chinese restaurants and it's a sure sign of culinary apathy. Surf's Up is located in a strip mall with a small, crowded parking lot that's a nightmare to negotiate during the day. It's not as bad in the evening, presumably because half the businesses are closed. If you're looking for Hawaiian plate lunch in Hollywood, just go further east on Sunset and head over to Ono. read more

I think that Volcano Wok is pretty awesome because they deliver! I was in the mood for Hawaiian and I didn't want to deal with the parking situation at my favorite Hawaiian fast food spot Onos, so I found Volcano Wok, the only place that delivers Hawaiian food in the vicinity of where I live. The delivery came in about 30 minutes and I was impressed that the delivery girl had to warn me that the bottom of the bag was hot because the Yang Chow Fried Rice that I had ordered was steaming hot. It was jam-packed with beef, chicken and large pieces of shrimp, I was impressed! It was good cheap fried rice, sodium-infused goodness. I couldn't finish it all and had it for lunch and dinner the next day I also ordered the chicken katsu plate. The chicken katsu was fine but I was very disappointed by the macaroni salad. I am a huge fan of Hawaiian style macaroni salad and this was limp and flavorless. I also missed the steamed cabbage that often comes with a Hawaiian plate All in all, I would definitely order delivery from here again. If I were to get in my car, I would go elsewhere but for convenience on a lazy day Volcano Wok hits the spot! read more

I use Seamless because the delivery people always bring the food to my door (7th floor of a building) while other delivery people are too lazy to come inside and call to make me come down to the front door to get the food. Today I ordered from Volcano Wok and after an hour (I might point out they are located three blocks from me) they called me to tell me they couldn't find parking and to come down and "stand in the street", by which I assumed he meant on the sidewalk and not in the middle of Hollywood Boulevard. I was miffed but went down anyways. There was no one there. I waited 5 minutes and called them back. "Oh, she's just leaving. Please wait. Two minute." Huh? "You mean you told me you couldn't find parking before the delivery person even left the restaurant?" "Blah blah hard to park." I told him all the other Seamless delivery people seemed to figure it out, and if they were not going to deliver as promised I thought they should refund the delivery fee. He blew up and started yelling. Anyway, after this lovely experience I continued to stand on the sidewalk outside my building for 15 minutes until the driver came up, parked right in front of the building and then called me to come down. I had to walk outside again to see above the "Volcano Wok" sign that it says, almost obscurely - Hawaiian BBQ. Then I had to wait for someone to appear, after some yelling I got someone to take my order. The poor guy was obviously the owner, and all alone doing it all by himself. We had a few language barriers and a few mistakes made (giving me white rice instead of the desired brown rice) but in the end I got my Hawaiian BBQ Chicken and it was very good. read more
