I heard this place was not be missed from my friends and so I paid a visit. The exterior and interior were very inviting and hipster. The young lady who was helping me was very kind. And so I ordered the most expensive box of 13 donuts which cost me about $34? I was told that the donuts were pre-selected, and that the most expensive box of dozen (or 13) contained all their iconic varieties, including the one with bacon. There is a certainly a vibe to this place. But these were not the best donuts I've had, and in fact they were too sweet for my taste. The donut itself was a bit dry. The frosting on top was too thickly laid. I'm also used to select the donuts I want and not be told that the box would be pre-selected for me. Took my children here to get some donuts. We've been here before, but it usually isn't empty like it was today. The restaurant appeared clean and cared for, but some things just look old. The cashier was nice and patient as we decided which donuts we wanted. He packed them into a box for us, then we paid. The donuts are good, but really, really sweet. All you really need is one because that is plenty of sugar. I like that they have a rotating display of the donuts. I would recommend going with a group of people as to get a sampler of doughnuts without being too overwhelmed by the all the sweetness. How could I not go to voodoo doughnut while visiting Portland for the first time? There were 3 locations in our vicinity, but I decided to go to this one because it had its own private parking lot. Score! This made it so much easier for us to wait in the long line. While the line was long, they were efficient and the line quickly went by. They were offering a $20 Black Friday dozen sale (originally $25) but they were out of some items (maple blunt, and then, after us, the voodoo doll). We got the last voodoo doll left for the day! What's up: Voodoo...the other doughnut shop I heard all about and another one that people say is a must try. After going to Blue Star Donuts, we made this place our next stop. Parking: They have a large parking lot that's easily identifiable by the pink fence. There's even a giant voodoo doll bush. Environment: Plenty of outdoor seating all around the parking area. The inside is split up into two sections, one for in store order and the other that's dedicated for mobile pickup. The menu is posted over the counter and the different flavors can be found in the rotating display case. They also have a couple of arcade games and a shelf for merch. We placed our order and sat at one of the tables outside to munch on our donuts. They don't provide utensils or napkins. What was ordered: - Raised Glazed (not much glaze, kinda meh) - Bacon Maple Bar (the sweet and salty works well) - Voodoo Doll (fun to look at, filled with jelly. It was meh) Yay/Nay/Meh: Meh. Their doughnuts are cool to look at, but taste wise, not great. They're a bit on the sweet side and the texture was not as good as Blue Star. I love Voodoo Doughnuts, ESPECIALLY the Davis location. There is always parking available in their dedicated parking lot, the inside area is more spacious, and the line is never out of control. I never bother with the downtown location when I am in Portland. It is the Davis location all the way. It is in a way safer area, and you don't feel as rushed to eat your doughnut and run like you do with you are downtown. You can even play some pinball or take some photos in the photo booth while you are there. We got the Ring of Fire and the Memphis Mafia. Recommend them both for entirely different reasons. The Ring of Fire is not too sweet, almost more on the umami or savory side. The perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar dusting with a hit of cayenne. They really nailed it with that one. The Memphis Mafia is the other end of the spectrum, but still not as sweet as you might think. It is a banana fritter, not an apple fritter, so that chills out the sugar aspect a little bit. It comes out more light and fluffy than crispy and crunchy. The peanut butter drizzle and chocolate chips + that banana flavor make your think of The King singin' a Hunka Hunka burnin' love. I live in LA and go to Universal Studios a lot and there is a Voodoo Doughnuts in Universal City Walk and I want too impressed. Strict quality control; donuts are good for 10 hours. Atmosphere - One of their largest locations. I believe this location is still open 24 hours. They also have a parking lot in the back of the building. Service - Good/great, we were the only customers. They have so many good competitors now, nothing like it was in 2003. They have a separate line for pick up. They are back to doing weddings, see website. They also have their Voodoo van for the Portland metro area, see website. Sorry no donut shipping, they believe in their quality integrity. But you can order merchandise online. My fiancé and I got 6 donuts and we finished them in 2 days. They were soft, fluffy and sweet. The filling was light and abundant. The Homer (strawberry sprinkles) and Blueberry donut are my favorite. We tried their limited edition banana cream and it tasted too artificial for us. We chose this branch because it's not as busy as the old Town one. There was still a line but it was faster than expected. They have very creative doughnut creations as well as the place. They're well known for their pink boxes too. Staff were polite and took time to answer questions from customers.
