It's easy to drive by this place but after eating here I can see why it's worth hitting your brakes. I had the turkey avocado wrap with a cup of the tomato basil soup. The wrap was well constructed with the ingredients distributed throughout so you won't just get a mouthful of mayonnaise. The tomato basil soup had fresh ingredients and you will definitely notice a lack of any tin flavor. Wife got the same wrap with the potato salad and the potato salad was delicious and it has eggs but I like that so if that's not your thing heads up. Finished with splitting a coconut cream pie cookie and they are big enough to split. Also amazing. read more

One of my favorite places for sandwiches!!! I love the grilled cheese that I usually order and just tried the Avocado Delight for the first time today! Will definitely order it again...it is much better and more flavorful than Twin Sister's vegetarian option in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and comfortable with eclectic furnishings and lots of natural light. They have an outdoor porch area for nicer weather days if you don't mind the sound of the traffic from the street. I enjoy their caesar salad as well, but my friend had the Cobb and was not too impressed. She thought the chicken was too thin and that the salad should be more chopped. It was pretty average. The salad had too much dressing, but had walnuts and cranberry. The tomato basil soup was not good, but the bread was pretty good. The sandwich (hoagie) was the best thing, but the pasta salad with it was just OK. Service was friendly and quick. This place is really cool, has a old house that is now a restaurant feel to it. When you walk in it smells great and is packed leaving you excited to try something off the menu. When we did get our food it was much a disappointment. I went with the No.1 selling chicken chipotle sandwich, the bread was very dry and flavorless, the chicken was not any better. I ordered the half sandwich and a salad combo, let's just say that was not how a Caesar salad should look or taste! Will not be trying this place for lunch anytime soon. read more

The main reason I'm writing this review is so hopefully someone who works there will read it and make an effort to improve upon the faults. I met a friend who lives in this area here and he recommended it and said he's a fan so I was excited. I ordered the half turkey and avocado sandwich on focaccia with a Caesar salad. For $9 this was hands down the worst salad/sandwich combo I've had in a long time if not ever. The romaine was drowning in dressing so I wasn't sure if the leaves were totally limp because of that or the lettuce was just bad. On top of that the dressing was flavorless; I'm pretty sure what I could taste was the Parmesan cheese. The sandwich was just.. plain. Decent amount of turkey on cold bread with a slice of provolone and not fully ripe avocado. I'm not one to return food but I brought it back in and asked if I could just have chips instead of my salad. No one even bothered to apologize or ask if I wanted a different salad they just handed me the chips. So yeah, $9 for a super small and sad half sandwich and a bag of chips. Can't say I'll be back anytime soon. read more

My first visit to WD Deli was a good one. The atmosphere is fun and original, the staff was nice and prompt. I ordered to go, the wait was short, the trivia cards on the tables really helped pass the time, and clued me in to all of the useless knowledge my brain contains. The food was good, but the reason for 4 stars is; the potato salad was mashed potatoes with fix-ins, very dry. As was the turkey club I devoured. The sandwich was good, don't get me wrong, but it needed more mayonnaise and/or mustard. Perhaps a dijon. The cookie was fantastic! The prices were well received as well. I love the W. D. Deli. Every time I walk through their doors, no matter how cloudy or gloomy it seems outside, it always seems bright and sunny inside. For some reason I have the feeling of being trapped in a Talking Heads sound track, which is fine by me. W. D. Deli is authentically hip, and hip before anything else in San Antonio was (with the exception of Twin Sisters). W. D. Deli has a coffee house feel, the staff doesn't mind one to lounge around a bit and extend their lunch. Wi Fi is available along with a a collection of games, assorted reading material, and neighborhood conversation. I love just about all their soups and sandwiches and never had a bad experience with my meal or the staff. At least once a month I like to take my dogs on the "long walk" which involves crossing through Brackenridge Park to the Half Price Books and Antiquarian Book Mart were I browse for a new read, and then over to the W. D. Deli for lunch or dessert. My dogs enjoy the front patio, and the staff loves to coo at them. Every time I visit the W. D. it just reminds me I should go more often. read more

If you go to WD Deli, be prepared to be taken care of like you don't matter at all. Went to WD for lunch one time and the food was great, but the staff was worthless. Not once did they ask how I was doing, and the girl at the register rolled her eyes at my girlfriend when she couldn't decide what she wanted on the menu. When we asked what type of cookies they had after wards, they told us to look in the jars where they have there cookies. If the staff was a little nicer, and had some better customer service, I would have easily given this place a 4 star rating, cause the food is actually really good, but the service made me never want to return again! read more

Fabulous sandwiches. The panini was fantastic. Salads were good and huge. Green apples were a nice healthy choice. Lots of kids options. It was my first time here and the customer service was great. The guy at the register let me take my time looking at the menu so I didn't feel pressured to rush and make a decision. Let me tell you about this place. If you get a turkey sandwich, you're going to taste the quality of the turkey. If you get it with cheese, you taste the quality of the cheese. The owners care about what they serve. So much so that they are present in the restaurant everyday that they are able. My experience here has always been positive. I have tried about every sandwich, soup, salad, and sides and I have to say it's all been delicious. The service is great and so it's the atmosphere. I was thinking that for the price, it would be the best soup and sandwich ever. It was just okay. It definitely wasn't worth what I paid. Actually, they charge a dollar for each item added on the sandwich (even though it was just half a sandwich). I added cheese and avocado without realizing the hefty additional cost. The tomatoe soup was pretty good but it wasn't as thick as I would have liked. It did have nice little chunks of tomato in it which gave it a nice consistency. The chocolate chip cookie was good but nothing special. I probably won't be coming back due to the cost and extra hefty charges for the sandwich add-ons. read more

Fast service but disappointing food. When I order a sandwich called Focaccia Supreme I expect it to actually be on Focaccia- but it was on nasty white bread- which was cold. The food is great here. It can get a little pricey but the quality is right up there. I gave this place only two stars due to the fact that everytime the customer service either blows or is barley average. It's a shame because I get the feeling it turns people off to this place. The first time I went was not a good experience. I guess I should have been an expert on the menu prior. This kept me from going back for a long time. I'll go to the deli every now and then but I've learned not to hold my breath for any semblance of good customer service. read more

I cannot WAIT to eat here! Here's why: My experience is based on ordering and picking up food for others, so I know nothing about the food quality. I walked into the deli to find it crowded enough to denote it was a good spot, but not so packed that there was an annoying line. The service was quick and very friendly. The two men I perceived to be owners were working with their staff and chatting up customers, which shows that they have great care in their work. The price is listed as "$," but I paid $32 for three deli sandwiches and three waters. I would say that is "$$" territory. The restaurant is really spacious. There are 5-8 outdoor patio tables in front, on Broadway, and a two-level indoor seating space. You order at the counter, take your number, and find a seat. This is a cute place with a nice patio and has fun little trivial pursuit cards on the tables and tons of photos (I guess of customers) all over the walls. However, what I also found there were tons of flies all over the window sill next to my table on one visit. Some times when I have gone I have gotten great service. Atmosphere was great, food was so-so. The first time I came right at the start of lunch and the bread on my turkey club seemed stale. Soup was kinda boring, it was broccoli and cheese. Second time I came a little later during lunch hour and the place was packed. I got the Tuna sandwich which was pretty good, the corn chowder which was not so great at all, and a Cesar salad that was made with lettuce starting to brown. My biggest problem with this place is their hours. Granted, I haven't been back in a while, so maybe they extended them, but it seems like they're always closed whenever I want to go there. Otherwise, I have enjoyed what I got from this place. The interior is very cozy (and I believe that you can eat upstairs, too) for one thing.
