I used to love Waffle House. Especially visiting during the late hours, as there were some prime stories to be heard and sights to be seen at that time of night/morning. But I also loved the food for its flavor, heartiness, and affordability. Well, based upon a recent drop in at the Clemmons location, the food is still pretty good, but there prices have certainly exceeded the realm of affordability. And I'm not (usually) awake at the "fun hours" any more, so maybe WH is losing its luster for me. Local Waffle House workers aren't as cordial or interesting as what I've always been used to either. Again, part of the Waffle House magic is the character (and characters) of a 24-hour diner. Instead, staff here seem bitter at worst and indifferent at best. Let's get the price of an All Star Special back down to being a damn good deal. Let's put some stuff from the old days back on the menu. The Texas cheesesteak and egg sandwich is a good example. And if something like an egg gets added to an order, let's get the price of such an addition to be consistent from restaurant to restaurant -- and let's make it representative of the cost of providing the egg rather than an exorbitant amount. And let's see WH cooks and waitstaff show some personality again. In other words, I want the old Waffle House experience back. read more

Had to walk out and told 3 other sets of people that turned around and left as well because we stood there for 5-10 minutes with no one acknowledging us and they were not fully seated but cleaning tables. No reason for it. People had to flag them down to get them to pay attention to anyone else but themselves. Plenty of staff to wait on all of us. The staff was preoccupied with talking about whether one of them was gay or not instead of focusing on their job, and the floor had toast, buttercup, bacon strips, and other crud all over it and they were just walking right by it stepping on it cooking around it. If I could choose no stars I would but I can't so I chose 1. I used to love Waffle House on Jonestown, although we usually dine after 9 or 10 we decided to make it an early night and eat at 8. The service was horrible!! Not only was she blowing her vape smoke all over our food but the "supervisor/cook" had no problem with her doing it! The cook would not make me a thicker waffle which is never a problem with any other cook. He looked so dirty and nasty that we just couldn't eat our food. We could tell we were not wanted there so we left. I would not recommend going to Waffle House on Jonestown if there's a server named Piper and a cook named Wes there. I have driven by this Waffle House so many times and never stopped in. Well on Wednesday night that changed! If you haven't seen the video for Anthony Bourdain's visit to Waffle House google it, it is worth the watch. The video was my inspiration for finally stopping in. "It is indeed marvelous, and irony free zone where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. . . Its warm yellow glow a beacon of hope and salvation." They have stuffed hash browns?! I had no idea! I went for a pecan waffle and hash browns smothered, covered, and chunked. I was not disappointed (I did feel weird ordering them though)! The pecan waffle was tasty and the whole restaurant smelt like waffle baking deliciousness. The prices are also insanely reasonable. I found it interesting that they put the calorie counts next to each menu item. You probably really don't want to know the calorie count when you are at Waffle House, but you can't really avoid it. read more

Preface: I'm a former restaurant manager and corporate trainer of 20+ years so I understand how difficult it can be (and frankly how easy it can be with a little effort) to work at a restaurant. I also want to state, only once (until tonight) have I ever been treated so poorly that I left before ordering. In that case my party was chased down as we were walking out the door and begged to return. We ended up having a great meal. Our party of 5 adults and a 6 year old went to Waffle House to celebrate my daughter's dance recital... not where I would have selected but my daughter wanted waffles. We arrived around 7pm to find a nearly empty restaurant... one person at a table and one eating at the bar. Most of the dinning room was blocked off and closed leaving only two tables to chose from. Grabbing a chair from the front entrance area we walked towards the table nearest the restroom. The server told us "umm, you can't sit that there" with a really bad attitude. "You'll block the walkway." Taken aback a bit I asked if we could sit at the only other open table? He said "yea". We mentioned the table was dirty. After he wiped the booth (where you sit) with a wet towel (I assume with sanitizer) and the half of the table that was nearest to him, he stood back from the table waiting for us to sit. My 6 year old wiped the crumbs off of the other half of the table and my mother in-law started drying the booth. It was so wet you couldn't sit down. The server glared at my mother in-law drying the boot. Since all of the 6 top tables were roped off, I grabbed a second chair to put at the end of the table. Looking back, I don't know how we would have ever been able to put all our food on the table. As we debated who would slide in to the booth first, the server once again decided to use his best customer service skills. He said "Oh, I'm so sorry... that doesn't look comfortable at all! Plus, with two chairs at the end of the table it might not be safe! Let me get y'all moved over here to one of these tables where you could put two chairs at the end and be more comfortable! LOL No, that's not what he said.... What he actually said was "umm, you can't put TWO chairs at the end of the table. It wasn't just what he said, but how he said it. Huge attitude. No customer service skills. No Chick-fil-A Core 4. Clearly didn't want us in the restaurant. At this point I'd had enough. I said, "Ok, we're leaving. Crackle Barrel sounds really good right now. We clearly aren't wanted here. Let's go every body." It took us several minutes to calm our 6 year old down who was really looking forward to the waffle. We explained to her that it would be better to pay more and go somewhere that appreciates a good tip. We also let her know that Cracker Barrel has great pancakes for kids with fruity pebbles cooked inside and topped with sprinkles. I know it's almost impossible to find anyone to apply for a restaurant job, much less actually show up. But as a restaurant manager, I'd rather run short than have someone with a bad attitude representing my company. And in this same difficult to hire job market, Cracker Barrel was able to find a team that provided great service, good food, and a clean table... without any attitude. I'll eat at Waffle House some day... but I'm sure our server from tonight would be happy to hear, it won't be at the Jonestown location. read more

I said something but the waitress seemed bothered so I just dropped it paid and left. I have zero qualms about walking into a Waffle House for good, simple, breakfast food. There is actually something kinda comforting in sitting at the bar and watching the cook grab all the ingredients and make them in front of you. I was feeling particularly famished when I stopped into the Casa De Waffle late the other afternoon. I ordered a egg and cheese biscuit, hashbrowns, and chocolate chip waffle. No frills, right. But good basic food. Biscuit was soft, egg cooked well, and cheese melted. Hashbrowns scattered across the flat top and then I topped them with some hot sauce and ketchup. BIG chocolate chip waffle that I let set for a few minutes to allow the chocolate chips to get melty and gooey. The service was great too. I really like this Waffle House, and I know that is weird to say, but they are always nice and the place is clean. Now, you should know, I flipping love Waffle House, but not all Waffle Houses are created equal (I love them so much, I follow them on every social media I can and I don't follow anyone.) In my younger days, I must admit, that I mainly visited after 2am but now I tend to go before noon on a weekend. Plus, I have found my dish there. The all-star minus the waffle. I dined at this Waffle House location around 1 a.m. for a late snack. Though a little on the salty side, the food was good and of expected quality. What was absolutely terrible though was my server. She was a middle aged-older woman who seemed to be in charge (perhaps the manager/owner?) She is one of the rudest waitresses I've ever seen. I was nothing but polite to her during the entire experience but she rolled her eyes and scoffed at me when I answered a question she had about my order incorrectly because the music in the place was so loud and she spoke to softly. I thought maybe just my mere state of being somehow rubbed her the wrong way, but as I was dining I noticed she did the same to no less than three other parties. She could be summarized as an irritable worker who didn't seem like she wanted to be there, nor any guest for that matter. The other staff I observed had no problems...very friendly and polite.
