I'm not a big meat eater. But when I want meat, I want meat. My carnivorous heritage awakens with a furious appetite for Barbecue. I'd compare Warthog with famous Dave's, but with less sauce. In fact, there is no sauce besides catsup unless you send hubby back to pester the staff for more. The ambience was country/hunter/rustic. I admit, though, beside the nice dim lighting and the tantalizing aroma of barbecue, the taxidermy beasts were... Nasty. Unappetizing. I felt like I was gnawing flesh from the boar head that was staring at me. Despite the guilt trip from Bambi's deceased relative, the food was pretty good. I'm not the most experienced carnivore, but it was okay. The fries, however, were terrible. Yuck. Mushy, soggy, cold flaps. Limp strips of nasty starch matter. I think they added sugar to the greasy little things. They had a sweet flavor. The side items were less than impressive portion, option and quality wise. I'll preface this by saying that I hadn't eaten all day and was famished by the time we made our way over to Warthogs. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! We wanted to catch a basketball game on TV so we took our food to go, but would have had no problem finding seating (though I understand this place can get pretty busy). I always order a combination meal to get a first impression for any BBQ place, and so I ordered the moo, oink, cluck with potato salad. I'm not from the south and I didn't grow up on BBQ, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but all the meats were delicious! I'm not usually a brisket fan, as I often find that it's dry and just not very appetizing to me, but Warthog's did it really well. The brisket, ribs, and chicken were all so juicy and flavorful! Someone mentioned the fat content of the meat might be higher than normal, but if it means I get a juicy brisket, then bring it on. It's not like I was chewing on cubes of fat (I actually didn't see anything offending at all). The potato salad was decent and I tried some of their coleslaw (which I thought tasted like KFC's coleslaw) but nothing to salivate over. For dessert, we ordered an entire Dutch Apple Pie to go (that was the only flavor left) and for $15/pie, I'd say find your dessert elsewhere. The flavors were okay but the crumble and pie crust were not great, and that's usually my favorite part. I was actually shocked at the price for the quality. I had real high hopes for this place, and initially I was pleased with the ribs. However, they are pretty saucy and a lot more fat than meat. The amount they give you is insane! Great value here! They are still some of the better ribs you can get around here. The decor is awesome! Very manly and cozy. I felt compelled to try their BBQ sampler, I think it is called the Moo, Oink, & Cluck. It may have been an off day for them but all the proteins were pretty dry and lacking in the flavor department. Ribs...a stack of cartilage swimming in some nasty BBQ sauce. Worst excuse for ribs that I have ever had at a restaurant. I found two small pieces of rib bones. It was like the took a rack, un-trimmed then cut it into two inch squares. I didn't see any smoke ring in the pieces that I had, after eating, I looked around back and I didn't see any stacks or smell any smoke indicating that they even BBQ at the site. Friendly staff. Don't order late, the meat is dry, tough or just fatty bits for brisket. Daytime, excellent food! The sauce is perfect for my taste buds and never grows tiresome. The collard greens are the best I've ever had, and consistent with each visit. Baked beans also some of the best I've had, great, slow cooked flavors. The cook(s) definitely put love in their food, which is appreciated. Small place, good for smaller groups or couples. Haven't been here in the summer months to enjoy outdoor seating yet. Sadly, the quality cuts of meat are never consistent. Witness the extremely touch brisket in the video. How can brisket smoked properly be so tough??? No smoke ring. Watch out for the "Catering Fee" upcharge! We ordered 6 takeout meals and were charged an extra $24.78 for "catering". As if! When I contacted the restaurant, the owner, Gary Kurashima, responded, "We do have a catering pick fee on our bulk menus , but only 5 percent on take out..we can fix this mistake". Note however that no such fee is listed on their menu. But to make matters worse, they instead added another $990.11 to our charge, for which I then had to incur the additional hassle of contesting with the credit card company. The food is good, but we'll never visit this disreputable business again! read more

I have visiting The Warthog since 2009 and have always had great food. I tried their smoked Prime Rib last weekend and my mouth is still watering from the fantastic flavor. (The also have the best french fries but ask for them to be Crisp (Dick Lynch style)... I have only had smoked Prime Rib one other time (in Florida) and I vowed never ever to try it again. Well I have begun to trust the fine folks at the Warthog and my trust paid off. I have tried many different BBQ meals at the Warthog and have never been disappointed. Last night I received the worst service ever. We went in last night and were never acknowledged until I spoke up and said we'd never been there. The older black haired lady behind the counter said, "You Order here and we bring the food to you, the specials are on the board." Ok... so we ordered off the nondescript board and ordered some different sides that were an up charge. $40 for a sampler plate with collard greens and "nasty rice" and my husband got ribs and chicken with fries and Mac and cheese. We sit down and get our food which is all cold except for my collard greens (which were the best part of me meal) and my husbands ribs. I think the food would have been great if it was hot. My rice wasn't even edible. But the foods not even what I'm so upset about. As we are sitting there eating a couple comes in and tells the same lady they have never been in before. She proceeds to tell them to take a seat she brings them some menus, which we didn't even know they had, and tells them to let her know if they had any questions. Are you kidding me??! So it's just me and my husband you had a problem serving?? We will never be returning, I literally stopped eating mid bite and left. My husband tried to get a box for his left overs and wasn't acknowledged then either. He had to interrupt her talking to a co worker to get a box. Thanks but no thanks Warthog. Never again. Usually I like smoky, sweet and spicy bbq sauce, and theirs fits the category of slightly sweet only, but their genuine smoked meats make up for the bland sauce...instead of getting a "smoked" flavor in the sauce, it's in the meat, so it works out to be quite complimentary. I've been coming here for a few years, when the craving hits and I dare to venture off the freeway into Fife. My favorite is the beef brisket, sliced and lean, tender and smokey, served AMPLY with some rather interesting sides. The baked beans are not very sweet, mostly savory and filled with pork. They are good, though. You also get a HUGE chunk of cornbread with a side of honey butter, so you don't really need any of their decadent desserts, though my husband often indulges in the peanut butter pie, usually followed by a nap. My daughter is big on pork and says their ribs and pulled pork are the best she's had. The ambiance is very country rustic, and they play that up with a country music station booming while you dine. Not my cup of tea, but it doesn't lessen the pleasure of the food going down. Now you too can have a reason to go to Fife, Wa! Warthog does many things well, as it should calling itself a BBQ pit. I lived in Texas for many years, and I know good BBQ when I eat it. Slow cooked, fall off the bone tender, and delicious homemade BBQ sauce to top it all off. What do I recommend? Everything. Their smoked chicken is bar none, smoky, tender and pulled... and then put into a quesadilla with cheese? Yes please! More of a meat type of person? Don't fret, Warthog makes amazing burgers, ribs and brisket. Love your sides? Their potato salad is legit, as is their beans! They have huge chunks of smoked meat hidden at the bottom, the cornbread is to die for. I have gone here many times when stopping by Sportco in Fife. The last time I went I ordered BBQ pork and fries. I explained I didn't want as a sandwich and as meat so I could dip in BBQ sauce. They brought out my order and it was a sandwich, I explained that was not what I ordered. The owner came up and basically called me a liar and said I ordered a sandwich. The food is average and the service today was confrontational that I will never return. I don't like writing bad reviews but this today was completely wrong and I felt such poor service should be noted. I watch the lady throw online orders food around like she playing basketball, then mixing up orders & bags, dropping food on the floor, getting more & more irritated. she brings me a plate and says "here" I told her it was to-go, she then argues with me that I didn't tell her that (I did) I'm now 45minutes into my hour lunch waiting for my food. she finally brings me a large paper bag and I go on my way. I'm back at work and I find my order only has 2 pork ribs in it so I bring it back. The lady is now pissed off at me and throws my order to the cook and I watch the food container break open. so now I ask for my money back and she says " we don't do that" so I ask for my order and she just acts like I'm not there. Stopped in here on a visit to Tacoma. First off let me say we lived in Texas for 30 years so we know good BBQ when we taste it. This is good BBQ. It's rare to find the variety of BBQ options that this place offers. Their pulled chicken, pulled pork, brisket and pork ribs are among the best that I've tried. Melt in your mouth comes to mind when sinking my teeth into all of those. They sell by the sandwich, single portions or by the pound. Sandwiches are accompanied by a dill pickle. From the time you come in the front door you'll feel welcome here. The ladies at the counter are so helpful to everyone, especially the newbies like myself. The menu is kept simple and that allows them to concentrate on making wonderfully tasting BBQ and fixings. They even have dessert! I tried the key lime pie and my goodness it was delicious! A great way to to off the special on Friday, ribeye steak. Cooked to perfection, it was a change from my usual pulled pork. I don't eat a ton of bbq but a client wanted to try this place out. The service was good and it was super clean, bonus points for that. I had the fried catfish, fries and hush puppies. The cat fish was beyond greasy. Even my dogs wouldn't eat it as leftovers, which is never a good sign! The fries were well seasoned but got soggy under the catfish. The hush puppies were sooo dry I almost couldn't eat them and the collard greens that came along were just nasty. A great local joint with great atmosphere - as for the barbecue, it's very tender -- but most of the flavor comes from the sauce and not the meat. Worth a trip for the experience, but I've had better barbecue. I had a pulled pork sandwich. As advertised, the meat had been slow-cooked to the point of extreme tenderness. But it wasn't that flavorful - the sauce is what gave it the flavor, and I felt like there was too much sauce. The cole-slaw was nothing special. But the atmosphere is amazing and one-of-a-kind. This place is a destination. There are wild boar heads and all kinds of taxidermy on the walls and ceiling, the place is a log-cabin in an area that now has industrial park all around it. It's a real throw-back to the 1950s, and worth a trip. This is the kind of joint that made the word road-trip have meaning - so far from the fast-food chain mentality, and a breath of fresh air as a result (ok, smoking bbq-pit air). read more

We just happened through the area today and decided to try this place for lunch. Needless to say I don't know why we haven't been here before, but very glad we gave it a whirl. The location is certainly out of the way but that makes this a great locals joint. The atmosphere is very kitschy and absolutely goes with the theme of great BBQ. I had the Brisket Reuben which was on special and it was one of the best Reuben's I have had. Maybe it was because the brisket was excellent, but I think it was the combination of the dressing, sauerkraut, and pumpernickel bread that made this an excellent lunch. I also enjoyed the fries, they were that good fresh cut kind that were full of flavor and with a little added salt they were excellent. I even grabbed some of the self serve barbecue sauce and mixed it with the hot sauce on the table for dipping. My partner had the Prime Rib dip, also on the special for the day and it was delicious. He's not usually a sandwich dip kind of person but he really enjoyed this. So much so we both said we will have to go back for their Prime Rib dinner! I also tried their cornbread which was good. Seems a bit pricy for the small piece we got, which they call a "large" but with the butter and honey to drizzle over the top it was certainly tasty. I can't wait to go back, might have to make it a regular thing so we can keep trying different types of meat and combinations! Stopped by here after doing some shopping. I always forget how much I love this little gem until I happen to be in the area. The customer service is always friendly. It's got a cute atmosphere. The garage doors were up today and you could eat outside. I got ribs and they were fabulous. I love their baked beans as well. My roommate had the pulled pork sandwich and was very happy too. If I could give them less than a 1 star I would. Just based on the fact that they refuse to handle their mistakes. After TWO weeks of giving this restaurant a chance to speak with us and make this right, I'm going ahead with my review and photos of our horrendous experience here. We have called several times since the order took place. Each time being told the manager is not around or is on vacation But that he would be in contact and this would be taken care of. We were asked to send photos to which we did along with a video and have still heard nothing at all. The lack of care and concern in this matter is what really angers me enough that I am done waiting to give them a chance to discuss this issue. When we went in we ordered a simple meat platter with chicken, brisket and ribs as well as burger off their menu. The platter was very small portioned for the price but the problem was that even still the meats were disgustingly dry and rubbery. The brisket was completely burnt to a jerky like texture. And the burger was raw and completely inedible. When I took a bite of the burger the taste and texture were so off putting that I decided to take a look at the patty itself. It literally peeled apart! Right down the middle to reveal a disgusting raw center that was a sticky texture. I immediately took photos and videos and you could HEAR the meat making sticky ripping squishy sounds as it peeled away from the other half of the patty. It was so repulsive we could not eat any of the dinner we just paid $50 for and we threw it away immediately. I filled out a customer service form on their website and then we called them on the next business day to let them know. We have since gotten the run around and at this point I think it's only fair I put in my negative review since they do not seem to care about their customer service or quality of the food they are serving their customers. I should have listened to all of the bad reviews on their page so I guess that it's on me for giving the benefit of the doubt on the couple of decent reviews I read. If you're looking for BBQ don't waste your money on overly priced food poisoning. Because that's what you're likely to get here! Bad food and bad management. read more

I had some people tell me this place was amazing so I went there. The kid running the front did a good job. The guy in the back was yelling across the restaurant to his workers to get stuff. I ordered a whole rack of ribs and a pound of brisket. First off the brisket was shredded which caused it to dry out. You should always cut it into strips. The ribs had so much fat on them. You could tell they where not trimmed properly. They didn't really have any flavor to them by themselves. They were fall off the bone but either one of the meats barely had any smoke flavor to them at all. I also ordered the coleslaw which was actually really good. The cornbread was damn near burnt on the top and was dry as hell. They honey butter was really good. They thing I would give 5 hell 6 stars was the bbq sauce. It was amazing. He has his son Conor employed there and he has NO customer service or knowledge of what he's doing it's pretty embarrassing. They do not answer their phones to even make an order & their excuse is "they have been slammed" show up and no one is there.. The staff isn't on the same page you'll talk to one & the next person says something else. They only have 1 cook, and apparently he doesn't come in until 11am when it opens. So that makes me question the integrity of the business itself because how can they offer to people early pick up. I discovered this place acidentally one day when shopping at Sportco for a new tent across the street during lunch time. I checked the Yelp reviews and decided to give it a try with my son. I was excited to try the brisket without having to take 10 hours to cook it myself. My son ordered the spicy sausage meal and I took a taste before trying my brisket. It was excellent. The heat level on the spice was medium and the sausage was excellent quality. I was impressed. The other thing I was impressed with was the corn bread, as well as, the BBQ sauce they offered. The brisket however was just average and, in fact, a bit tough. The service was friendly and welcoming though. It teminded me of a BBQ place I ate at while in Charleston, SC so it had kind of a rural s.outhern feel. I will go back to try their weekly special but not the brisket again. I'm looking forward to having some more of their cornbread again with the excellent butter they provide for it. Overall the experience was pleasant. read more

I am so thankful I found this place!! I traveled to Tacoma on business and got a craving for barbecue. When I got to Warthog everything looked and smelled so good that I couldn't choose so I got it all on the Western Round Up (brisket, pulled pork, a rib, chicken, turkey, ham and the spicy sausage). The barbecue sauce itself was excellent. The ribs, brisket and pulled pork made me a believer and if/when I find myself in Tacoma I will be back. The girls that worked the dining area and register also deserve a shout out for their customer service (I thought they closed at 9 so thank you for not making me feel like I had to rush when I showed up after 8). My only suggestion is that the ham doesn't need the sauce and definitely stands on its own.
