Service was good food wasn't above a 3 but it wasn't terrible either. It was freezing out and the outside door was tied open. They offered a seat in the back but I have a partial disability so I only sit at a table. Hence we froze. Maybe the owner manager should fix the door? Products evaluated: 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, hash brown, toast, "regular" coffee [Mark: 89 , Grade: B+] Environment and Hygiene: Casual and relaxed. The retro decor was appreciated. Some minor improvements needed in terms of hygiene. 8.75/10 Presentation: Limited evidence of care shown but this was expected and condonned. 13/15 Portion: Generous and abundant - 3 slices of toast for each of us?! 10/10 Taste: Well-prepared overall. The thickness of the toasts was spot-on. The over-easy eggs were well executed with nicely runny yolks, but I would ike the egg whites to be more set. The hash brown had a nice texture but was slightly lacking in seasonings - much better after salt and pepper were added. The coffee was surprisingly strong enough. 35/40 Service: Rushed at the beginning but the service was proactive and professional. Requests for coffee refills were quickly complied with. 12.75/15 Price: $13.45 (?) for the main dish and $2.5 for the coffee I think. I am not sure about NYC price ranges but my guess is that it is reasonable for the area, and for both the quantity and the quality of the food offered. 9.25/10 Verdict: A good, unpretentious diner. Nice little diner a block from the square. I only had an English muffin and a bowl of matzoh ball soup so my first hand review is limited to those items - but my son had a buffalo chicken panini (off the regular menu) that was bigger than his head (never eat anything bigger than your head!) and my SO had the avocado eggs Benedict off the special menu - and both those fellas were plenty happy. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from an American diner - somehow they manage to cover all the bases of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Eggs, pancakes, French toast (challah!), sandwiches, salads, main courses. If you can't find something to eat here then it probably doesn't exist. My English muffin was, well, it was an English muffin. Nothing special or fancy. The matzoh ball soup was the perfect balance of salt and chicken stock - my bobe would approve. Service was quick and friendly. The experience won't blow your socks off, but it is a solid diner. We go here at least once each visit to NYC regardless where our hotel is. It's easily accessible by subway exiting at Washington Square. The staff are old timers, efficient and pleasant. The breakfasts are the bestsellers seen being ordered any time of the day. The potatoes seem to be shaved rather than sliced or diced. So good. The waffle came w 2 eggs done as you like and choice of meat. The bacon was crisp. Coffee is kept hot. Our lunch was a corned beef sandwich which was a bit dry and my crab salad was made w lump ARTIFICIAL crab. The accompanying potato salad and cole slaw were good. We'll stick to breakfast. read more

Nothing special about this diner. It was clean but, the service was not great. Came in for a quick bite. I had a craving for French toast. They do not serve old fashion, only Challah. Three pieces arrived and I ordered two over easy eggs. I understand the bread is thick but, it was undercooked. As I said, it wasn't that crowded and the waiter was not attentive. I was in the East Village visiting a friend who suggested we go to the WSD for lunch. I like diners you can always find something to eat in a diner. The diner is a storefront that is open 24/7, nice when the munchies hit at 4AM. We sat down in a booth and studied the extensive menu. I selected one of the lunch specials that included a cup of soup, a beverage and a main. I ordered the Gyro Melt, a giant platter of beef gyro on pita bread with grilled tomatoes, onion & peppers topped with melted mozzarella cheese with tzatziki sauce and a Greek salad. The beef was very tasty and the salad very filling. Everything was fresh and properly prepared. If I lived in the area I could see this being a go to place to eat. Exactly what a diner should be, with NY prices to match. I had a great turkey club with just the right amount of bacon and lightly toasted rye. They serve Heinz ketchup, which is a make-or-break for most diners if they don't. Service was quick and friendly. Overall, a great place to stop if you're in the area. It saddens me to hear that on 4/20/2024, I had made a recommendation to my children to visit the diner because they pancakes filled with fresh strawberries was delicious when I visited the diner on 9/16/2023 for my birthday breakfast. They felt discriminated by the manager who was dressed with a colorful tie. I am a Graduate Student of NYU and it is not appropriate to discriminate anyone. In the Greenwich Village area with my sister to visit a friend, we were a bit early and were looking for a quick no frills breakfast. This area has a plethora of breakfast options but most are fairly pricey and open fairly late (by NYC standards) at 8AM. My sister chose the aptly named Lumberjack breakfast choosing Whole Wheat pancakes in lieu of standard pancakes. The pancakes were superb, having great taste and texture. They were notably earthy with a slightly sour (not unpleasant) taste of a buckwheat grain. The exterior was crisp and the inside was fluffy. Scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly for her, meaning it's cooked thoroughly without any gooey liquid. The protein triple threat of bacon, ham steak, and sausage were all enjoyable, with the ham steak being very good and the sausage absolutely excellent. The ham steak had both a pleasant smokiness and sweet flavor. Sausage was absolutely excellent, having a crisp and snappy casing containing the perfectly ratioed fatty pork blend inside. I wanted a lighter bite and opted for a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and a side of whole wheat toast with butter. Oatmeal was cooked well, though a tad bland, but adding in a small container of honey really provided the missing sweetness. The blueberries were very fresh and juicy, with a flavor neither too sweet nor sour. The coffee was solid typical diner fare and enjoyable. Following an insightful open-mic poetry reading nearby Cornelia Street Cafe of seeing old comforting faces in conjunction with new inspiring faces, a few of us prolific poets came here for dinner. Washington Square Diner is just another typical diner with slightly better than average service, but store bought mass produced quality food. My turkey sandwich wrap was rather bland without any condiments as I had to add salt and pepper for taste. Oh, you know those times when you're not hungry because you basically just ate, but you want to hang out with someone at midnight, its cold and rainy and you'd like to sit down and sip on soda or tea? The prices throughout the menu was way too high for a diner. I chose the cheapest thing they had. Booyah. Overcooked fries. Watered down coke. Mediocre diner food with gourmet prices. This place is cool. Diners like this always remind me of home, with the old booths and menus, and the little desert area at checkout. I always stare way too long at the cheesecake though. I digress, it seemed a little pricey, but if you go on the weekend for their deals, it's pretty reasonable. I got a focaccia panini and it was HUGE. There were two of them and one of them was good enough for a meal. So, I found out though it may be pricey, you get a lot of food at this place, so there are good tradeoffs. As far as diners go, this one is top-notch. It has that classic diner feel with comfy booths and a big menu, minus the torn seats and sticky pages. Washington Square Diner was extremely clean, and had no wait when we came on a Sunday Morning. The servers were very attentive, consistently checking on us, filling our coffee, and seeing if there's anything else we needed - the kind of service you want when you come to a down-home diner like this. The boyfriend had your classic diner breakfast - two eggs with hashbrowns and a side of tomatoes. The eggs were cooked perfectly, with the whites set and yolks still runny. The hashbrowns were served thin, with a crispy crunchy later on the top. The TUNA MELT was gluttonous - the perfect Sunday treat. The two slices of bread are buttered and lightly toasted, topped with heaping piles of creamy tuna salad, and melted cheese on top. The cole slaw on the side is the perfect addition, and the addition of tomato and lettuce help add a fresh crunch to an otherwise heavy dish. As far as diners go, this one's a keeper! read more

I've lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years. I used to prefer Waverly diner, but, not anymore since they renovated and changed management and staff and their quality has gone downhill . Washington Square diner keeps on getting better. In fact this is now my go to place for a quality quick meal. Their burgers are grilled which gives them a great smoky flavor. Soups are always on point and they offer at least 4 a day. You can't go wrong with their omelets. My personal favorites are the pork chop Washington and the tossed salad with broiled salmon. Portions are huge and you can get a few meals out of one. Definitely bang for your buck. The seating is roomy and comfortable. Interesting customers sometimes entertaining. Late night, after watching a play in brooklyn we stopped by west village before heading to penn station for our death march home. couldn't find anything to eat so we came here. This place has some interesting personalities and individuals. A dude acting like he was having acid flashbacks. A noisy group of young ins nearby who were talking extremely loud, most likely drunk but maybe just obnoxious all the time. this place has a lot of different types of weird people but that's also kind of the charm. this is nyc, so the fact that the tables were really small and tight is to be expected. but the tables were also really high, which is just weird, but I guess it's so it can accomodate taller people while merely annoying shorter people. My friends are health concsious people so they got egg white omelettes, while i ordered the chicken souvlaki with tziki sauce and french fries. the tziki sauce was not real tziki sauce, honestly it just tasted like mayo. the chicken was overcooked. the fries were pretty well done though but i didn't eat that much of it because i was getting fat shamed by my friends. not explicitly, but i could tell that they were making mental notes to bash me later with. it was late though and i was snickers hungry which is why i ordered that nastiness even while in the presence of my food nazi friends. all in all, a pretty cool experience. food was mediocre, but it is worth it just to see the crowd that comes rolling in. can't say i will be back since i don't live in nyc, but it was a good memory. read more

The mashed potatoes were cold and bland and peas were as hard as rocks. Went back one morning for an omelet. It had peppers, onions, lots of flavorful extras and yet, zero flavor. Pretty solid diner food! It has a very classic diner feel that is really nice when it's late, and you REALLY want some pancakes. Biggest drawback here was that the food, while all good, was pretty pricey for what you were getting. My pancakes were good, but a little dry, everything else was cooked well and came out fast! It's pretty much standard diner food, big selection, a little pricey but for the area it's not bad. It's a good place to sit and eat. Usually I do a soup and sandwich, or a BLT, the portions are rather large so keep that in mind when ordering. With all the fancy and pricey restaurants in the west village this is a throwback to more simple times when the village wasn't just for the rich. Sit by the window if you can it's a great place to people watch! I just moved in this area and I'm so happy I have a diner right around the corner from me! I got the home fries and turkey sausage and my friend got the eggs Benedict- both were really good! We also got cappuccinos and they were amazing, definitely recommend! The outdoor seating was limited but it wasn't that crowded for a Saturday morning, so getting a table was no problem at all. Cozy basic diner that I stopped in one night for a quick dinner. Standard diner menu that reads like a book. Good service, clean place, ok prices, and decent coffee. Best thing about diners are that you can order up breakfast at any time, and there is nothing wrong with having an omelet and pancakes for dinner. Had to update. Something's changed recently. The portions have gotten smaller and quality is just not as good. This change is dramatic and across all the items we've tried recently. The Giant Focaccia Paninis sandwiches used to be wonderfully overstuffed and on glorious bread. Now the bread pieces are much much smaller and just plain, and the filling is barely there. For example, the chicken parmigiana sandwich used to be so stuffed with big pieces of chicken that you could pick at a little and nibble on some of the pieces on the side (almost like fried chicken), and still have enough to completely enjoy your overstuffed sandwich. Now there is only ONE single flat little chicken piece for the entire sandwich. It gets lost in the sandwich. It also used to be the kind of sandwich that had lots of yummy gooey cheese that would string and ooze with each bite. Now you are lucky if you see any cheese at all. Very disappointed. Diners are probably my favorite type of restaurant overall, so I may hold them to a slightly higher standard. I consider Washington Square Diner a 2.5 star, but whatever, 2 stars it is. First of all, this place is 24 hours, so they deserve some credit for that. The interior is... well designed for a diner, and feels very comfortable. You can sit here for ages, and The attention to detail is poor here. One time when I came in with friends, I only ordered two things: fries, and water with no ice. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but my water came back with ice in it (this was in the winter, by the way). The food here is extremely average, even by diner standards. I don't really want to come back here, but it is pretty close to my church, so what am I gonna do? It's sad. read more
