Diners are probably my favorite type of restaurant overall, so I may hold them to a slightly higher standard. I consider Washington Square Diner a 2.5 star, but whatever, 2 stars it is. First of all, this place is 24 hours, so they deserve some credit for that. The interior is... well designed for a diner, and feels very comfortable. You can sit here for ages, and The attention to detail is poor here. One time when I came in with friends, I only ordered two things: fries, and water with no ice. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but my water came back with ice in it (this was in the winter, by the way). The food here is extremely average, even by diner standards. I don't really want to come back here, but it is pretty close to my church, so what am I gonna do? It's sad. read more

Washington Square Diner is what I would call a dive diner. The food is cheap and the restaurant has character, inviting a relatively diverse customers base. The best thing about this diner are the relatively low food prices. Most meals are under $10. So you don't have to worry too much about "breaking the bank." The worst thing about the diner, at least during my only visit, was the wait time. I was promptly seated but was seated in an area populated by other customers even though there were ample empty tables in an unoccupied area, which was preferable for social distancing purposes. Moreover, it took over 30 minutes to receive my Eggs Florentine dish. The eggs Florentine were too salty for my taste and the home fries had just a bit too much butter. Washington Square Diner is located in a cool neighborhood not too far from the famed park. It seems to have a lot to f character. read more

Who doesn't love a 24hr diner? This is a great place to go to after a night at down the hatch. It's not far and the food is priced reasonable. ::BATHROOM ALERT:: I have to say no complaints. The door locks correctly, smells nice, toilet is clean, sink doesn't drip and it's a reasonable space to go to the bathroom. I'm happy to see a diner with a clean bathroom because it makes me feel good about the food. I like that the waiters have patience because I've gone in there before with friends and they don't pester us to leave quickly. They let you hang out for a bit after the bill has been paid. I've yet to see this place packed or have a bad experience here. The train is close by so that's a plus when your about to leave. They make really good burgers and their fries were golden brown and crispy just how I like them. read more

The scrambled eggs with cheese were good but turkey sausage was a let down(not good) especially since I had to pay more to get them. The french toast was made with some weird breading, I didn't even attempt to finish them off. Sometimes it's Saturday afternoon and every restaurant nearby is packed so you wind up in a diner. There is nothing wrong with this. Diners have something for everyone and you usually leave full and satisfied. We wound up in Washington Square Diner on a dreary Saturday. We were quickly seated and handed both the regular menu, as well as the brunch menu. The brunch menu had the usual offerings: omelets, waffles, French toast, etc. Two of us went with French toast, one went with a burger that had an egg on top, and one had the eggs benedict. Everything was tasty. I really enjoyed my French toast, it was flavorful without being overall sweet. The reason I'm knocking off two stars is the service. It took a while for us to get our check, they screwed up my friend's egg order, and then it took them a bit to get our cards back to us once we paid. It's a solid go-to on rainy days. read more

Washington Sq. Diner is a pretty generic brunch place with large portions and the ability to seat large groups. Food [4/5] - The menu is extensive with a variety of breakfast and lunch items. I had two sunny side up eggs with sausage, while my friends ordered a variety of other similar dishes. They were all pretty similar with minor changes in meat selection. Service [4/5] - I came with a group of 10 people on Saturday morning, and we were seated immediately. The restaurant was fairly empty, and the staff was quite accommodating. One of my friends who's vegan asked for avocado toast, which the restaurant didn't have on the menu. However, they threw it together for her anyway. Ambiance [4/5] - Pretty much what you would expect from a brunch diner. There are some pretty large windows facing outside, letting in a healthy amount of natural light. Value [4/5] - I paid ~$13 for my two eggs with sausage, so nothing too crazy. One of my friends got a big brunch combo, which included coffee, juice, fruit, and eggs for $2.50. read more

Had to do a quick semi "business lunch" after the Photo Expo that I attended today and my friend suggested we hit the Washington Square Diner as he goes there often. I was game since I had never tried it and felt I might get a few more new Foodspotting images. Our three member party was seated quickly, and since it was just after 1:30pm, there was not a crazy crowd to deal with. We chose the window seat to enjoy some of the NYC life that was going on while we ate. Never a bad thing. Our waiter did at first seem to be rushing us to order but we made him wait a few minutes while we settled in. No drinking today so only a round of waters for the table. Foodwise my friends had a Greek Chicken salad, the baked Meatloaf special while I had an Avocado Burger with bacon and cheese. I realize this sounds heavy but I did at least walk over a mile to get here today. The food came out quickly and was exactly to order. My friends choices looked great and made me question my own in some sense. Of course they made my burger just right and I've not yet had sliced avocado on it so enjoyed this particular combination. The portions all seemed sizable which is never a bad thing to observe. When the bill arrived it was reasonable plus a decent tip. I will mark this down as a good idea when in the vicinity again even though there are a few other choices that I enjoy right in this area as well. read more

Had to come here for lunch with family after a memorial service for my grandmother. Not good, I'm glad I had a cold and couldn't taste my food, but the texture of the chicken was definitely off. The chicken was mushy like it was processed chicken. The onion rings were oily and cooked way too long. The waiters kept mixing up all the orders. It's raining and all I had this morning was Robitussin. Ugh. And for some reason I was really hungry for an American-style breakfast. The closest place by far was the Washington Square Diner which is fine as it is kind of nostalgic for me (I went here before passing my PhD written and oral exams -- yay!). I opted for the Pancake Lumberjack breakfast. Damn I must have been hungry: 3 fluffy pancakes, 2 pork sausages, 2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices of crispy bacon, and 2 large slices of ham. And I finished all of it except a small piece of pancake. This really hit the spot. I was surprised at how good the sausage was, how nice and crispy the bacon was, and just how fluffy those pancakes were. The food is average, the service also rates an average, same for the setting. So why the four stars? Because in my opinion this is exactly what a neighborhood diner is all about and they're doing really well at it. Fast service and greeting, by the time you get through their eight page or so menu, the server has asked you at least three times if you're ready. The first time I barely just opened the menu. Lot's of offerings from breakfast to dinner, if you can't find something on their menu, you're just not hungry and should probably look for something else to do. I had a tasty spinach and feta omelette, a little bit too brown for my taste, however I'm not as hardcore about it, I know some people that may have sent it back. The hash brown potatoes aren't the shredded generic type, more the homemade version as slices. The coffee while not the greatest was much better than most diner's and I would have it again. The ambience, it's a neighborhood diner filled with regulars. Perhaps a tourist or two may find their way in as they're visiting the Stonewall monument nearby, but don't expect this place looking to get on the map as a must stop. This is a place to go to when you want to get away from all of that noise. So if your idea of visiting NYC is to go to some must go place, that's fine, go and enjoy. However, it's businesses like these that make me feel like I visited the real NYC. Not that I don't enjoy a get all fancied pants night out, but given a choice a diner works for me. read more

This is a nice quaint neighborhood diner in Greenwich Village. You can just tell by the clientele that they have a lot of local regulars that go there, which is always a good indication for those not familiar with the business. The staff was very welcoming and pleasant. Coffee and water was kept topped-off, and service was not delayed. On weekends they have a special brunch menu (see photo) with quite a selection that comes with a choice of sides, as well as regular items. We ordered an Italian omelet (sausage and mozzarella cheese) and the baby back ribs. While the omelet was good, I expected the sausage to be more of an Italian sausage. Instead, it tasted like more of a breakfast sausage. Still good, but not what I expected. The ribs were also good, with the sauce being more on the sweet and smoky side. All things considered it was a good experience with good diner fare. It's not gourmet by any stretch, but the bathrooms were clean and I didn't get sick, so always a plus. read more

With a 10% discount for NYU students, we popped by to see if this was a good choice to grab a bite late at night. All the regular diner menu. An order of fries was huge, and chicken fingers equally so. I picked up two eggs and ham. Still disappointed they don't serve hash browns - by default, the chipped house fry potatoes.... I loved the food here and the service is SUPER FAST. We legit ordered like 5 minute, and then got all our food. We ordered the pancakes; lumberjack, blueberry, and chocolate. This is such a convenient spot because its right outside the W4 train station. The waiter was nice and we got so much butter and syrup. Perfectly ok if you are in the area and starving. I ordered chicken souvlaki and it was base line fine. There was nothing at all special about their presentation. Two skewers of chicken, 2 pitas at room temp, a small greek salad and rice. I asked for tzatsiki sauce (no problem). The booths are a little squeezy for 4 people. The staff is ok, friendly enough but not overly attentive or anything. There seemed to be a few homeless people coming in to use the bathroom. On one hand, I respect restaurants that allow that kind of thing. On the other hand, one particular man who came through to use the rest rooms, left a cloud of BO among the diners on his way out that made it very difficult to continue eating. The owners of the Washington Square Diner are showing compassion to the people living across the way in Washington Square Park. Yet, the very way they make their living is jeopardized by this decision, as it impacts their paying customers. I appreciate their ideology, but may make a different choice the next time i'm in the neighborhood, starving, and searching for some place to get a bite to eat. read more

We ate an early dinner there tonight and it was quite satisfactory. I ordered the spinach pie, which came with a Greek Salad (the entrée was very tasty and the portion was fairly generous, although the salad was just "fair"). My husband ordered the chicken pot pie (also a fairly generous-sized portion), which came with a salad and a cup of soup (he chose the turkey soup, which he said was very tasty - although he said the chicken pot pie was just "o.k" because it tasted like the vegetables were canned). The rolls (one/each) were large and chewy, plus they were warmed up. Although we were too full for dessert, I'm obsessed with bread pudding and most places don't serve it - so I didn't have to "force" myself to order it (my husband ate part of it and we both thought it was delicious). 24hr diners must be compared in a class of their own- and with that caveat, I can say this one is very clean, has fast service, and is friendly, which makes it decent enough to visit even when you're not smashed at 3am. Food quality definitely takes a back seat to most everything else here- but that doesn't mean the chefs aren't putting their best into the ingredients they have to work with. Service was great, but with so many other really great food options in the area that use higher quality ingredients, I think I'll only come back here when everything else is closed. For a 24-hour diner, this place is A-OK, and if everyone else is on a wait for brunch on Saturday or Sunday, you'll still probably be able to get a table here if you're in a rush. read more

I wish I could give ZERO stars! This place is absolutely horrible! My friend and I came in last night around 3ish in the morning. The server was disgustingly rude! He got our order wrong & tried to blame us! He said I don't care if you're the customer, you guys aren't always right! I was like WHAT! The food here is mediocre and the service sucks. The only thing convenient about this place is that it's 24 hours, so if you are drunk out of your mind One night/early morning and you just want something that tastes remotely edible then you come here, which is what my friends and I did. One of my friends got the chicken tenders, which had a rubbery texture, another guy waffles which were bland. And I ordered bacon and eggs because that's all I wanted. However, what pissed me off is that apparently they have bacon and eggs listed twice on two different areas of the menu. There's bacon and eggs that comes with like toast and jam and then there's just bacon and eggs from a sandwich, I don't know, it made absolutely no sense what the guy was saying. What I know is that there was a seven dollar difference between the two versions and I wanted the cheapest one and of course he gave me the platter and charged me $11. Another thing, I thought I left my ID here and when I called the place the next day to see if they have it, I got hung up on twice and the people who kept picking up didn't speak English well and was not listening. I've been passing by this place for over 35 years without ever stopping in until the other night. My loss. Clean, well lit diner next to Golden Swan Garden, it's a rare gem in Manhattan. A two story stand alone diner with windows looking out into the garden and onto 6th Avenue. As for the food, good stuff. I had a chocolate egg cream and a Texas Burger Deluxe with cheese (A cheese burger deluxe with a fried egg on top). Service was very attentive. My water glass was never empty. Price was good too. The people there were nice, but the food seemed a bit pricey for the quality. I will say that they are open forever, so it's super convenient, and a great sobering up pit stop. I for one adore diner food, and diner food is the original brunch place to be in my heart. The potatoes seemed under cooked and a bit mushy, so I'd stray away from that. The food was good. The service was an entirely different story. My boyfriend, myself, and one of our friends came here on a Sunday afternoon a little after 1. It's a small-ish place and was understandably busy. It took about 10 minutes or so to get seated, which is again...understandable. Once we got seated, we were given menus and water and then promptly forgotten about. About 15 minutes later (with much head swiveling on our parts trying to catch someone's attention) someone finally comes to take our order. BF and our friend order breakfast specials - one pancake and one french toast...I order a lunch special. At this point, BF tells the waiter he'll take the pancakes to go because he has to be at work (which thankfully is literally right around the corner) by 1:45.This seemed to confuse the waiter and he asked for clarification a couple of times. The breakfast type foods come out quickly - except the wrong meal was packaged to go...it then takes them 10 minutes to bring out our friend's french toast...which it looks like they removed from the box and flopped on a plate...he also got the wrong eggs, he ordered over easy, not scrambled. BF's pancakes are nowhere to be found...if you dumped the french toast out of the box then by logic, it shouldn't take another 15 minutes for the pancakes to show up - like they made them from scratch again. In the mean time, BF sees the clock and decides he has to leave...of course waiter is nowhere to be found...so he leaves, and of course right afterwards they bring out his food, and then are confused when I say "you took too long, he had to leave." At no point was the delay in my food ever addressed...after the guy asked if I was sure I didn't want the pancakes IT STILL TOOK THEM ANOTHER 10 MINUTES TO BRING OUT MY FOOD. Our friend had already finished his food before mine even saw the table. WTF...then when we were ready to go it took the guy a while to bring us our check. Just overall a crappy experience. At 3:00 am in the village you expect a certain laissez-faire attitude towards your meal. At a diner, that expectation is doubled. But tonight was different. I have had good to middling experiences at diners before; dealing with waiters and chefs that don't care after a certain hour. But tonight at WSD I felt special. I order comfort foods because at these hours that's all you want. French Onion Soup has become a staple of my diet at new restaurants, because if they can't get that right I will gladly take my business elsewhere. Suffice to say, their humble take on that basic fair both met and exceeded my expectations. Not so much to create a new rubric of taste but enough to surprise me. I followed that up with the meatloaf, another staple. I assumed, from experience, I would be left with a dry, overcooked monstrosity. What was delivered to me was succulent, moist, and felt like it had been cooked in that hour. I asked for two slices of bread to take the remainder home as a sandwich and they were given gratis. Add in a welcoming wait staff and you have a recipe for an amazing diner. The next time I'm looking for late night eats in the village, I will go out of my way to visit again. read more

I'm seeing a lot of negative feedback but I think this diner is wonderful. It's a decent size and the staff is very friendly. Music is always playing softly in the background, allowing you to speak without struggling. The food is quite delicious and filling. I love me a real bad/good diner, but the Washington Square is just not that great. When I went, the service was pretty terrible and the prices were surprisingly steep when compared to the other diner-type spots that line 6th avenue. In general, between the not-particularly-cozy atmosphere and the stingy once-in-a-blue-moon coffee refills, the place seems designed to not make you want to hang out, which seems to be to be the antithesis of what a real bad/good diner should be like. The free delivery is a nice touch, though, and the fact that it is open 24 hours is a big plus. read more

Along my travels throughout the city I look for great food and good service. These two combined are extremely hard to come by and this place got both right in my first visit. Making my first experience here excellent. The diner itself is clean, desserts and fresh fruit are on display at the bar area and the seating is sufficient. The diner is self seating, so we sat ourselves at a booth while our server came up rather quickly and gave us two very large menus. Thank goodness we knew what we wanted because the menus alone offered a vast array of options. What I did note was for those of you who enjoy omelets for breakfast, there is a smaller menu that gives the costumer more options to choose from. For myself I opted for an egg white omelet (peppers, onions, bacon, spinach), side whole wheat toast, home fries (did not eat), and fresh fruit (grapes, kiwi, nectarine, honey dew melon). My guest opted for her usual waffle with bacon and a side of juice. The food portions are enormous (seriously the food comes out on a large platter), my egg white omelet came piping hot and each ingredient freshly chopped. With each forkful I got a mouthful of bacon and veggies. I finished off my omelet and had room to finish off my fruit and toast. The meal itself was very light but filling. The home fries were not very appealing to me (also made fresh) so I tossed them. My guest also had no complaints about her waffle, light, fluffy, filling, and remained hot throughout her meal. The bacon that accompanied was made to perfection (not overdone) and they are not stingy with the portions (4 thick slices). So with this great meal I got great service. Not once did I have to repeat my order, look for my server, ask for a refill on my drinks, send my food back, or complain. This is what sticks out to me. This diner believe it or not was a saving grace after having such horrible experiences at other restaurants. So when a group of my mates and I were hungry I eagerly suggested this place. It was mildly crowded and we were seated quickly. They serve breakfast all day which is a plus for me!! The pancakes were very good. The chicken sandwich was not so much. The fries were yummy. Overall, I would not run back to this place, but considering I'm in the area often and it's pretty decent pricing wise. I would stop by for a friendly meal. read more
