Just received take out from here: Do Not Eat Here if you want to have a delicious meal and if you want to make your family happy. Eat here if you enjoy feasting on a big bowl of microwaved sour dog poop they call " Award Winning Chili"! This chili tasted like SPOILED MILK so you know it's been sitting at the wrong temp for way too long. The chicken was burnt to a crisp and insanely dry; it was tough to choke down. Ordered 16 ribs and sides last night for take out. I was a bit hesitant because of all the negative reviews but I've been coming to Wes' for 25 years and I wasn't ready to give up. The staff was cordial. I only waited about 10 minutes. I've attached a picture of the ribs. Understand that these ARE NOT the baby back ribs. Everyone seems to mess that up. He chose ribs that were burnt, tuff, & fatty. Steak that he ordered medium. Came out the kitchen burnt. It actually looked like charcoal. Pulled pork tasted like ketchup. Blah. Everytime I come here I'm just disappointed. The food never is that great. Tonight I decided to get the rib dinner and the ribs were alright. They were skimpy on the meat and the side that did have some meat, it was just tough. The beans are very acidic but not terrible and my favorite part of my meal was my waffle fries unfortunately (even though waffle fries are amazing). The barbeque sauce on the ribs was good too. The barbeque sauce on the table was very tomato and vinegar base, not terrible but I wish they had what was on my ribs. The service is always just horrible. We ordered fried pickles, they never came. I asked for fries instead of cold slaw and ended up without beans. He fixed it when I said something but still. We had to wait at least 15/20 minutes after our meal just to get the check because our waiter only came to check on us once during the meal, which was at least better than the last time we went and we had to get up and ask for a check because our waitress just never checked on us. If you are a huge fan on BBQ I don't suggest coming here, you will be highly dissatisfied read more

Came here right after taking down a dog at Haven Brothers. Food hopping is way better than bar hopping. Had the cornbread which was so good. Then got a mixed plate of the St. Louis Baby Ribs and then the regular big dog ribs. Both were good, but I preferred the baby ribs. Much more tender and less fat. read more

Came here with my boyfriend for some takeout. It's always better to hoss out on a giant plate of meat in the comfort of your own home where no one can judge :) He had never been here before, and it had been years since my last visit, so we thought we'd give his RI landmark a try. Before we went, I told him to expect a dark townie pub with a low volume crowd, and a sketchy atmosphere. When we showed up, we were surprised to find a new addition to the restaurant, some bright lighting, and a pretty big expansion. Yet the place was near empty. Well that's too bad. We sat at the bar and had a couple cocktails (good pours) while we perused the menu (and the townies/?mobsters). We finally decided on 24 ribs (mix of baby backs and St. Louis style), potato skins with bacon and cheese, and cornbread. The bartender was nice, and pointed out how to order the same food at a discount. Marginal discount, but still, that was cool. By the time we downed our whiskeys, the food was ready. When we got home and unwrapped it, we were happy to see 2 big containers of extra BBQ sauce (hot and mild), wet naps, and forks and stuff. The baby backs were not super meaty, but pretty tasty. Lean but a bit chewier than I expected. The St. Louis ribs were big and meaty, definitely more gristly. They were both cooked well, good char, decent amount of smoke. Makes me sad though when all the meat doesn't come off to leave a clean bone behind. These ribs were missing that piece. The big hunks of cornbread (like 4"X4"X2") were sweet and dense, but definitely needed to be heated up. It was clearly pulled right from the fridge to go in our order. As was the cold BBQ sauce. The bacon filled potato skins were surprisingly awesome. It was more like a shelled baked potato stuffed with A LOT of bacon and topped with melted cheese and a side of sour cream. Not your typical "fried till it resembles a hard potato nacho with only 2 small bacon bits stuck on." So these were delish. We had plenty of food, and basically made 3 meals out of it. The bill was ~$80 for 2 cocktails, 24 ribs, potato skins, and 2 giant squares of cornbread. Definitely get the potato skins. Enjoy! read more

Not usually one to complain but in this instance I wish I could give negative stars. One of the worst restaurant experiences of my life. Arrived at 4:00 and waited until 5:10 when around 2.5/4 meals arrived one hour later. After another 20 minutes we were then told that the kitchen has no chicken and that I would have to reorder, after waiting over an hour this is not what you want to hear. We never received around half our meal. After being told that the meal was not coming we attempted to speak to a manager and was told there was no one of authority present. At this same time there are another 6 tables attempting to complain due to similar issues. Every part of the service was awful. The table next to me (party of 2) waited an hour and 45 minutes for their food. When it did arrive it was the wrong order and they had to wait another 45 minutes for the correct meal. After speaking to the waitress about how awful the experience was the meal was free however it should not have ended this way. Food was mediocre at best, I don't think I can make a fair opinion on it seeing as half of it never arrived. We will not be coming back and would not recommend anyone dine here. If you are looking for a way to waste money and be unhappy with your meal then this is your spot! Otherwise run away as fast as you can! read more

I had a serious craving for southern BBQ and decided to try this local spot. I was seriously disappointed. I offered the "Finger Sucker" platter with baby ribs and the pork-chop. My sides were mac n cheese, sweet mashed potato, and I also added an extra corn on the cob. When my plate came out I was like "WOW!" But when I actually tried it it was more like, "seriously?" First of all, the ribs had almost no meat on them, and what I thought was meat, was actually char so when I ate, it was bitter and gross. Those ribs got a 3/10. The BBQ sauce was good, that's it. The pork-chop was a complete joke. It was dry and it reminded me of jerky, which I hate. Never again. 0/10 The sweet mash had a weird color and was stringy. I thought I was eating cassava/yucca. 2/10 The corn on the cob was actually like a 1/4 piece of corn so it was annoying to know that I paid for an additional side for literally a piece of corn. 4/10 The star of the plate was actually the mac n cheese. I made the mistake of ignoring yelp. I thought that maybe Wes' had made some improvements as they've been blasted pretty hard. But every bad review, unfortunately, is earned. They've been around since 1976. Not sure what's happened. I placed a to go order. They told me 20 minutes. I walked out nearly an hour later without my half chicken (which I caught before I left) and without my garlic bread. I only ordered three other things. The "hostess" stood draped over her podium texting someone for the entire 40 minute wait. She didn't once seat anyone, another server did. Maybe she wasn't the hostess? Food review. Awful. The ribs tasted like they had been cooked for 20 mins. They couldn't even be pulled apart, let alone fall off the bone. I had to cut the couple apart that weren't already cut. The "chopped BBQ", which was "pulled pork" was maybe blended pork mush sitting in an inch of grease. The sauce was good though. Kinda. Wes' Rib House enjoys legendary acclaim for having the best barbeque in Rhode Island. My wife and I came here for dinner, and were truly disappointed. I asked for a Makers 46, and watched the "bartender" pour me a regular Maker's Mark. When she brought it to our table, I asked her if she actually had any Makers 46, and she said she didn't know. My wife ordered a mango margarita, and again, the bartender didn't know what that was. At least she bothered to ask us for the drink menu at our table, so she could take it back to the bar and use it as a reference to make the drink. The food was above average bbq for this part of the country, although the ribs had very little meat on them and the mashed potatoes were clearly out of a box. Do yourself a favor and go to the other side of town to Rick's Roadhouse if you're craving bbq. The food is just as good (if not better), the staff know what they're doing, and best of all, you won't be afraid of getting shot in the parking lot. read more

2 hour wait time was excusable due to the fact that it was busy because of quarantine. As time went on I kindly called the restaurant to ask for an update and on the last ring the employee picked up and was so rude to me on the phone I was tempted to cancel the order. During this time we looked up reviews to find some pretty bad ones but as they were outdated we gave them the benefit of the doubt. The food finally arrived and it was cold and honestly inedible. The ribs came out cold, dry and almost so Smokey that it almost tasted like fake liquid smoke. the "beef" was leathery and not appealing, first time I've ever taken 1 bit of a rib, and 1 bite of the beef and said nah I'm good, the Mac N cheese had no flavor, the Coleslaw tasted old... The appetizer sampler came out with the food. It was decent - but obviously pre-made national food distribution heat and serve. $46 for a dinner for two at a "rib house" would normally feel like a decent deal. But the fact that I sent back my plate with only 1 bite out of the two items and the server's response was "oh, you didn't like it" and brought back the bill like she wasn't concerned or surprised... I wasn't looking for a discount, but I was expecting awknowlgement that it wasn't the norm.. I rarely say this.. I had super high hopes for this places and I was extremely disappointed. My husband said that he has been here before several years ago and i though hey why not. The food tasted great it.....would have been better if the food was warm, didn't have to wait 1.5 hours to get it, the were a total of 15 wait staff milling around moving at snail pace, 20 people at best in the restaurant, they were out of every beer, meat, weren't serving this plate or that plate for whatever reason. BBQ was made for whiskey and Wes' only has the same ol' shit as every other bar. I suppose it's a beer drinking crowd. Beer is good, yay beer, but have a nice smokey whiskey first. I've been everywhere, man. And most places I've eaten BBQ. Memphis (Central BBQ, best I've ever had), Amarillo, St. Louis, Dallas, Columbia SC (Maurice's Piggy Park, thank you very much and pass the mustard), Kansas City, Houston, Macon. Yup. Had some good BBQ. Just not at Wes' in Providence. I had such high hopes for this place, because I've had so many friends recommend it. I even wore my best cowboy boots. And when we walked in the door... whooooo-eeee! The smell was dead-on perfect. Figured I had a night of hickory smoked rapture awaiting me. Sadly, it weren't gonna be. It's a sorry-ass state when the best thing you can say about a BBQ shack is that the beans were pretty good. Look, I can sure get why someone stumbling into this place at 2:00 AM drunk as a skunk would think they'd just found heaven. The prices are reasonable (stuff yourself on the three-meat combo for $14.99). The staff is very friendly, and while we weren't there when the post-club cattle drive came on, I gotta figure they handle that crowd pretty well. But everything here was disappointing. It seems they start out pretty good with their meat, because it was all very thoroughly smoked. But for whatever confounded reason, they feel compelled to take lovely smoked meat and throw it on an open flame and char the holy life out of it. It was difficult to savor the smokey flavors that sure enough took hours to develop, because they were buried in bitter carbon that was forced upon these innocent cuts of meat in a few minutes of high-temperature abuse. When you pick up a chicken leg and black flakes of charred skin cascade down onto your plate and your lap, y'all know you are in a heap o' trouble. I ordered a three-meat combo, with chicken, "big ribs" and pork chop. I picked the large pork ribs over the baby backs, because baby backs are the easiest thing to screw up so I figured I'd check out how they did with the easy stuff. All three were dry, the chop so desert gulch dry that I had to take a big swig of beer just to swallow each bite. After finishing that my jaw was pert near tuckered out, so I switched to the chicken. Now the chicken itself was mighty tasty and the least dry of the three... once I chipped off the brittle, blackened skin. The ribs? What meat was on 'em wasn't worth the effort, because it was cooked to death. Sometimes you can save bad BBQ like this with a good sauce... or at least make it slide down a little easier. Not so at Wes.' They have two sauces, a "mild" which is nearly flavorless, and a "hot" which is merely hot and not much else. Both are about as thick and rich as tap water. The cole slaw was pretty good. The beans were pretty good. The "famous" cornbread tasted a lot like Jiffy mix to me, but it was warm and they served it with real butter, and it was the one thing that hit the table that wasn't overcooked to buzzard-bait dryness. I wish I could share the local fever for this place. Maybe if I went out drinking and smoking up all night and stumbled in after everything else was closed with an ornery case of the munchies I might have a greater appreciation. So, why two stars instead of one? Our waitress was the shizzle with the bazizzle... friendly, charming, informed, engaging, funny. As a matter of fact, I dead-panned her a sarcastic wisecrack and she lobbed it right back without breaking character. Very impressive. Also, it's kind of a cool physical plant... colorful location, clean, spacious... nothing like a southern BBQ shack, but comfy. I've read a bunch of reviews of New England BBQ places on Yelp written by southerners, and they ain't been too kind. When it comes to Wes' I gotta agree with 'em. LJ's on the Providence-Pawtucket line is a whole heckuva lot better, but it ain't A&R that's for damb sure. But if anyone tells you that all New England BBQ is about as worthwhile as goose poop on a pump handle, you direct them up to Redbone's in Somerville MA. Their teeny-tiny plastic sauce cups piss me off no end, but the sauces in them are so good, and the meat prepared so perfectly (get an Arkansas rib), you'll think you've died and floated off down south of the Mason-Dixon line. read more

Well, this truly is a mixed bag. I must admit that I am from being from Texas and have lived in Georgia for 6 years, and yes, that does count for something when it comes to BBQ. So let me just go through what I and the family ate and shared. 1) Chili - Skip it. First they served it to me stone cold. After nuking in the microwave, all of the vinegar came rushing up. Who does that to chili? 2) Onion Rings - If you like the Beer Battered stuff, you will love these. Hot, crisp and not to over the top on the batter. It was just right. 3) Beans and Cole Slaw - This was split. I liked both, my wife liked neither. The Cole Slaw has vinegar base, which I like. The beans were just different. Not that I would go out of my way to eat them, but they were good 4) The CORN BREAD is worth going in for, With the real butter, it is great. My wife is a huge fan of sweet cornbread. It is starting to grow on me. Not the usual fare down south, at least not in Tejas. Maine's: 1) Baby Back Ribs - too little meat and too dry. - Skip 2) Regular 'Big' ribs as they call them - Worth the trip. Big and meaty with good flavor. I would go back for these ribs. Even the wife approved. 3) Chicken. I must say that this is a winner. I am not a huge smoked chicken fan because it tends to be dry. These were fantastic. Great flavor and moist. 4) Pork Chops were very good as well. Moist, and flavorful. Now, there is the issue of not having un-sweet tea in hand. They will get you run out of town south of the Mason-Dixon. So I am a little disappointed. I am giving this 4 stars, all though I think it is more in the 3 to 3.5 rage, but there seem to be some fairly harsh critics out there and this does deserve a little more respect. read more

I used to love this place....especially late late night after a solid night of drinks but after this last visit? Nah. We walked in...the place was all but empty except for 2 tables. It was a Saturday at 7:00PM. We waiting about 5 minutes before being acknowledged for seating. We then sat another 10 minutes before someone finally came over. The 2 waiters working literally just looked at us that entire time. The manager said they were confused as to who had the section. What!? So we ordered. Boneless wings to start, a slab, 1/2 pint of collard greens, 1/2 pint of mac n cheese and cornbread. Guess what came out first! The cornbread....followed by everything else and then 5 minutes AFTER all the other food came out our appetizer came out. WTF!? HOW DO YOU SCREW UP SO BAD WITH ONLY 2 TABLES OCCUPIED!? To be honest, the boneless wings were pretty good. the cornbread was cornbread, the mac n cheese was ok and the collard greens were definitely not like they used to be. I feel like a bad Rhode Islander for taking almost 26 years to finally try Wes's Rib House but I am happy to say the wait has finally ended. I liked Wes's but it did not wow me like I was expecting. Now lets breakdown the meal: I got "The Finger Sucker" which comes with 2 meats baked beans, coleslaw, and cornbread Chili-good but I would have preferred more beef than beans Cornbread-Out of this world my favorite part of the meal!!! Pulled BBQ-had a great taste that was enhanced when you added BBQ Sauce Ribs-not good at all. They didn't have much meat the primary taste was charcoal Beans and Coleslaw-Both delicious and a nice compliment to the meal. I enjoyed my 1st Wes's experience but will be sure to avoid the ribs next time. I liked everything else I got. Theres a few reasons Wes' has been open for so long...1. The smell. Once you walk in, the smell of hickory and BBQ hits you..and its incredible. 2. The bar. This place is great to pop in for a cold one. 3. The late night hours. The food, I've found, is hit and miss. I ordered a 40 piece tray of pork ribs for a party I was hosting. Everyone said they loved them, but I found the ribs fatty and tough. I managed to save them, however, by cooking them for another 2 hours in a covered pan at 275 degrees. After that, they were "fall off the bone" tender, juicy and delicious. You can't beat that Wes' smoke flavor. read more

This was a great place to go after being out having drinks because they are open into the wee hours of the morning. I stopped frequenting this spot after we had a rather enjoyable dining experience of bbq and a few of us were waiting in the car...guess what we saw? All along the outside of the establishment, rats were scurrying all over the place. The dumpsters the back stairs and most importantly right in front of the back door. I've always been a fan of Wes's and go there often. Despite the fact that its location is not the best and the outside is not appealing ... It's worth going inside. The food is amazing. They recently remodeled and it looks great. A very large bar area with plenty of Tvs would make this a great place to watch a game or throw back a few cold ones. It was oddly quiet on a Saturday night but we were there around eight and I think they do a big late night business being open til four am. Yeah I said four am. Much tastier a than a drive thru option after a night out. We were seated promptly and our waiter was very nice. Our food came out fairly quickly and was hot. We had jalepeno poppers which were crispy and full of heat. I had a huge burger with four cheese and jalepenos on it. It was cooked very well and juicy. Waffle fries on the side were perfectly seasoned and way better than the regular ones. I had some of my dad and brothers ribs and they were cooked well. Seasoned just a bit so you really get the taste of the meat. Top it off with their spicy BBQ sauce and you will be very happy. I was too full to get it that day but their cornbread is one of the best I've ever had. It's huge and melts in your mouth. I will Definetly be back and will recommend it to anyone looking for some good BBQ. Only thing that kept it from five stars is the beer selection. Ordered off Uber eats and all I can say is these ribs were horrible. I couldn't seem to find any meat on them and you had to pull pretty hard in order for some of the meat that you'd find to even get it off the bone. Ordered the pork chop as well and wasn't the best. I think the best thing from my order was the corn bread. Like ribs and good service? Don't come here. I went out to dinner for Father's Day with my parents tonight, as my dad was craving ribs and they used to come here often a few years ago. They were pleasantly surprised by the new decor that was a step up from what it used to be and we're excited for the good ribs they remembered. Turns out, we were wrong. We were seated promptly then sat for 15-20 minutes before the waitress even acknowledged our presence. No "I'll be with you in a moment" or anything. By the time she actually decided to see us, we had already picked out our dinners and put in our orders immediately because we were ready and hungry. Plus we figured that we would get our food quickly. Wrong again. It took about a half hour before we received our food and when we did, all our meat was completely cold. When we informed our waitress, who never actually gave us her name at any point during the night and I had to tell the hostess to find the one in the black, sparkly top, the kitchen simply placed it back on the grill. This wouldn't have been a problem except my mom had ordered steak medium rare and when she got it back, it was more than well done. She didn't even end up eating and ended up feeling horrible for suggesting coming here in the first place when my dad wanted to go to Chili's. According to the manager, my mom's was the last piece of steak in the restaurant due to a large amount of take out orders. But seriously, what respectable BBQ restaurant runs out of its main pieces of meat and doesn't even have the decency to run to a nearby store and get more, especially when there is a Stop and Shop less than 10 minutes away? Another thing was that while the sauce was probably some of the best I've ever had, the pieces of ribs were more bone than actual meat and the reheating only made it dry and harder to chew. The only positive is we were comped for our meal and only had to pay for our sodas and my mixed drink. But if you honestly want to keep customers coming in, eating and coming back, focus more on the quality of service and the food than the flatscreen TVs, Red Sox games and take out orders. And we weren't the only ones who thought the service was horrible: a large party of 10 or more people left before they even got their food while we were waiting for ours to be reheated. I think next time we want ribs, we will be heading to Chili's instead. read more

I went in with my wife craving BBQ. The place was empty the girl greeted us with a complete shit attitude. Told us we could only sit at the bar. Not my thing I am gonna sit at a table while I try to enjoy dinner. We walkked out never to return again. read more
