American pie
Ashley L.

I went here for brunch as a part of a party of 20 for a bachelorette weekend. It was a great experience. Our table was set up and waiting for us. Our server (Tyler??) handled the table like a pro. We got bottles of water and glasses for everyone right away. Everyone's food came out at about the same time. Checks were split and paid out with ease. He took pictures for us and even got a chair for a better angle. All the food was delicious and fairly priced for the area. The chile butter potatoes are a don't miss and I was told the giant cinnamon roll was to die for. They have an extensive whiskey menu (naturally) and lots of tasty cocktail options. I had the American pie and it was very good. I would definitely return if I'm in the area. The restaurant is a little hard to find as it's tucked back behind Oceans Prime and you can't see it from the parking lot.

Crab Benedict and chicken melt, both with chili butter potatoes

Had a lovely brunch date here with my kiddo while shopping at International Plaza. We didn't have a reservation on a beautiful Saturday around noon, but we were able to get a table right away. The patio is so cute, with some hydroponic gardens and a little herb garden, but the inside had the A/C going, so we were grateful for the cooler air inside. Since it was noon on a Saturday, we were able to enjoy the brunch menu. My kiddo had the chicken melt, which was HUGE, and she really liked it. I had the crab Benedict. The hollandaise sauce had a nice little kick to it, but the crab was kind of "fishy" tasting, so I kind of drowned it in lemon juice and that made it better. The poached eggs were perfect. We both had the chili butter potatoes for our side, and they were SO crispy and delicious. We didn't save room for dessert, but wished we had - the signature whiskey cake looked delicious.

THE cake. The restaurant namesake. Whiskey Cake.

So Whiskey Cake has been on my bucket list FOR YEARS and I'm so happy to have finally gotten around to getting myself over there as I'm now on the market to go somewhere else for cake (and let's face it, I a new dinner spot). Really, I came for cake, but I stayed for...everything else. I got good vibes upon visiting here with my pup Muffin. The folks at the hostess stand were super welcoming and seated me right away. Very shortly I was greeted by my wonderful server Amber. She told me all about the restaurant which had me even more excited to come here for dinner. She also gave me great recs for drinks. Being that it was a SUPER HOT day I went for a non-alcoholic drink (because I barely drink) and Amber recommended Ruby Slippers, which is basically a strawberry basil lemonade. OMG SSSSOOO refreshing, and when I dumped my water into the glass to get more of the flavor it helped quench my thirst. For my appetizer, their fried green tomatoes. Generous portion, lightly breaded and crisp, practically a tempura. Came with a thick dipping sauce with dill that was rich and refreshing all the same. For my dinner I went with the steak salad. Normally I don't do salad for dinner unless I'm unimpressed with the menu, but that was not the case here, rather I just wanted to eat a little lighter. I thought the steak salad would be a great choice. What impressed me with it is that it wasn't overly large like salads tend to be at other places, and had a great variety of ingredients including shaved gruyere. My steak was cooked PERFECTLY (I went with medium rare). The portion size was PERFECT and I could see myself eating this on a normal lunch day. And of course, I've saved THE BEST for last. The major reason why I came. Their signature namesake dish. WHISKEY CAKE. I was pretty fully at the end of the dinner, so I got it to-go. Turns out, it was smart move so I could pair with coffee and really take my time enjoying it. This is some SERIOUS CAKE. Tastes like dreams and toffee with a little bit of a kick. Moist yet dense with a hearty toffee and molasses taste to it, it comes with a side of vanilla cream cheese drizzle that I poured over the toffee and pecan covered top. It was PEFFECTION. So glad to finally try Whiskey Cake, and I would definitely be back--even if it's only to get a cake to-go!

We stopped in on the 4th, as it fell on a Saturday night for a long weekend and I didn't feel like cooking or doing the normal hotdogs and burgers thing. Place was not crowded at all as International Plaza had already closed at 6 and it was a holiday. We were greeted immediately and easily grabbed two seats at the bar. We've been here many times before. I wanted a Skrewball peanut butter whiskey but can't believe they don't carry it. I ordered an espresso martini (I believe this was made with cold brew as I didn't see an espresso machine) and my husband ordered a beer. We were super hungry so we split the deviled eggs appetizer and the steak frites. Solid choices. Service was great. The bartender is super friendly and definitely gave us all his attention. Will definitely be returning, this is one of my go to spots at international Plaza.

Loud location! Stopped in for Sunday brunch a few months back. It was crowded and loud. Our waiter was just blah, just doing his job but he could have been friendlier. The food came out pretty fast. It was ok nothing amazing that I would return honestly. The drinks were good and whiskey is just whiskey.... Strong! The cake was good. Very sweet so you can't eat a lot at once. Overall I would return if asked to go but not a spot that I would frequent.

Gavin was our host. He recommended his favorite items from the menu and his conversation made us feel welcome. He even highlighted Whiskey Cakes workplace culture. It appears this eatery cares about the happiness of the patrons and the employees too. My Hangover Burger was exactly what I needed after a great workout. Can't wait to bring other people here.

This is a chain done right. Love their food and drink menu, the vibe is warm and welcoming, service is always outstanding. Some of their dishes can be a little heavy on the salt, but we've never had a bad meal here. Their brunch is especially good. Never had the whiskey cake though. One day!

We sat at the outside bar, The Old Fashioned Bar. Alex was our bartender and he was amazing! We both had a Frozen Old Fashioned, and they were so good! I tried the Wabbit Smash, which was gin based and made with fresh carrot juice and ginger and that was delicious! It was a great time and Alex made it even better with his knowledge of the different Whiskeys and his upbeat and positive energy! And among the extensive choices of Whiskeys they have a private barrel with Elijah Craig that you can only get at Whiskey Cake! That's pretty cool. Everything was awesome and we can't wait to come back!

This restaurant has been on my wishlist list for a year and I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to go. The location is excellent- since it's in the Westshore mall there is plenty of free parking and other things to do/see/shop nearby. Our server, Elijah, was absolutely amazing- friendly, professional and helpful without being cloying. He did little things like wrote friendly notes on the receipt and the to go boxes. I especially liked that he asked if I was ok with all the ingredients in the food I ordered because it ended up that the menu didn't mention pork was in the gravy and I don't eat pork. I was here for a book club meeting and it was one of the few restaurants we met at where the music wasn't loud and I didn't feel the need to yell. The food was delicious . I ended up getting the chicken strips and waffles and everything was well seasoned and tasty. I ordered an alcoholic drink (can't remember the exact name) it was tasty and they did not skimp on the alcohol . I didn't buy the whiskey cake because I'm not a lover of molasses and that's what it tasted like. I'd be interested in going back and trying their brunch.

Half sandwhich half soup.

Everything here was amazing. Start to finish. Our host was warm, welcoming and had a stunning little flower on top of their head. We took our time with my menu. Everything is made from scratch and sounded fantastic. I chose the half sandwich half soup. Turkey chili with avocado pair with a chicken melt sandwich and house chips. My partner had the French onion burger. These sandwiches are messy! But everything was delicious and we were the perfect amount of full.

I love this spot! I think I come everytime I'm in town at this point lol. It's a cool place with great service and food! This trip I ordered the kale salad which was delicious, however I was hungry as hell 3 hours later lol. I won't ever make that mistake again. I definitely needed more food lol. I did that to save room for the main event which is the whiskey cake!!! And it is still as amazing as it was when I first had it back in 2020. I came here alone while waiting for a friend to arrive in town. I sat outside so I could people watch. It was a great solo date night. I sipped some Woodford to help rinse down my whiskey cake and it was really just a great trip. Everything was fantastic!!!

Old Fashioned
Kimberly M.

This restaurant is delightful. Highly recommend the Old Fashioned if you are a drinker. If you prefer spirit free, Ruby Slippers is a tasty option. I had the Grilled Shrimp Rigatoni as my main course and it was tasty with the perfect amount of heat from chili oil. The service was swift and pleasant. Ambiance is definitely a bigger restaurant atmosphere. There is a private room in the back for larger parties and an outdoor seating area if you love a cool breeze while you sip.

I was out Christmas shopping and decided to stop in for dinner. Julia was our server and she was very friendly and helpful. Started out with the goat cheese appetizer and it was delicious.! I could have stopped there lol. So creamy and warm and full of garlic. Mmmmm I had the salmon and my husband had the turkey chili. The salmon had a bit of spice but it was perfect for me. Cooked perfectly at medium. If you want a more dry cut, ask them to cook it longer. I prefer the medium cook. The Turks chili was good. A little sweet for me. I prefer a smoked flavor but I would still order it. It has a lot of meat and beans to fill you up. I love sitting outside to people watch and enjoy dinner. I'll definitely return.

What food is available for vegetarians?

Fried green tomatoes, soups, salads I suggest checking out the menu online before you go.

Are kids allowed?

Definitely! There is definitely availability for families!

How are the Portion sizes, because the portions look small on the website?

I would call them average. Similar to others in same price range. Maybe smaller than somewhere like Cheesecake Factory which loads up with pasta, but the main dish will be similar. I've found Whisky Cake's quality to be superior to similar priced…

Do I have to make a reservation?

No it's not required, but it's nice that you have the option to

Outdoor seating available?

Yes! Very nice outdoor seating. The restaurant is all open to the outside when it comes to view but then there is outdoor seating with the view to the plaza. Very good for people watching.

When are Brunch times?

Saturday and Sunday from 10-3. Enjoy!

Is there valet parking for lunch?

There's always valet parking at the mall. At the front entrance to bay Street

The happy (social) hour is Monday through Friday between 3-6pm AND 9pm-11pm, per the Whiskey Cake's website as of 7/3/19.

I consider Ponte to be more upscale and not pretentious. It is one of the better restaurants I've been to in Tampa Bay. The bread options were splendid and quite toothsome. Before we left, the sous-chef came to our table, made an introduction, thanked us personally, and inquired whether we enjoyed our meals. The experience is one we want to repeat! You remember the feeling; and the feelings were luxurious. We have been telling our friends and family about this place. We were all very pleased with this restaurant, the food, and the waitstaff. Ponte is highly recommended if you want a great dining experience with attentive service. We are going back!!

Our early evening dinner was fantastic. Excellent service, excellent food and everything we would expect from a fine dining experience curated by the family-owned The Ponte Group. We're big fans of On Swann and Olivia and have had Ponte Modern American on our list for a while. We arrived to Midtown and were ready for our dining experience. We received a friendly welcome into the light and airy entrance. We were escorted along white cloth covered tables to the spot where we would dine. Our server was around quick and started on drinks for us. The cocktail menu offers classic and modern versions of some of the most common drinks. I love an old fashioned and opted for the "modern" version. Instead of bourbon, it was made with Japanese whiskey, kokuto, which is considered to be the world's healthiest brown sugar and black walnut bitters. It had depth and flavor and a flair that made it stand out compared to the classic drink. My wife had a mocktail. It was light, sweet and hit the spot she said. We didn't order any starters but a man with a variety of fresh breads came around multiple times. He offered up as much as we would like, everything from sourdough to focaccia and beyond. My favorite was a black olive sourdough. The Chef also sent out a small espresso cup filled with his signature mushroom soup. At first a little confused, I eventually got bold with it and sipped this like I was sipping coffee. It was really good. Thick, rich and flavorful. The white mushrooms and earthy truffle creme made this a hit. I could have had a whole bowl of this but soup just isn't my go-to. Between the cocktail, bread and soup, this dinner was already starting out pretty fantastic. For our mains, I got the house specialty Beef Wellington. My wife got the boneless short ribs entree. Our food arrived and we were ready to dig in. Like most elegant dining experiences, you can expect top notch food, smaller portions and a focus on presentation. My Beef Wellington was served medium rare. It was wrapped in salty prosciutto, mushroom duxelles and had a little extra depth, foie gras. The duck liver added texture and a buttery flavor that melded with everything well. The earthy minced mushrooms had an array of pointed subtle flavor. I appreciated the classic take on a classic dish, that had a hint of flair that worked so well. The red wine demi glas was an excellent dipping sauce and added to the overall presentation with it's dark red smear on the plate. My wife highly enjoyed her short ribs. The tender beef was rich in flavor and paired well with pureed potatoes and an apple slaw garnish for a hint of sweet with a little spice. We also shared a side dish. The campanelle mac and cheese. This was rich, creamy and an excellent Mac and cheese side that we would definitely get again. While we didn't order dessert, they did send out three small sweets. A mini key lime custard, dark chocolate and a small chocolate chip cookie. All of them were sweet and tasty. A nice little finish. Our dinner at Ponte was great. From the service, to the food, to the ambiance and experience, all maintain that level of elegance and modern that make it what it is: a restaurant you should eat at.

If you're in the mood for an appetizer, I suggest the Herb Focaccia (the herb oil is delicious), potato chips and dip (I believe the chips are homemade), and when in season the olives. The olives were my favorite, but they haven't been on the menu the last several times we visited. We've tried half the menu but my favorite is the rigatoni that you can get without protein or add to the side. As for dessert, I absolutely love the s'mores chocolate custard. Also very delicious! The service is always serving! lol it's always quick, attentive, and friendly. The only downside is the limited time you have at your table (90min) when AJ is there to dj, but we get it! :) I do recommend going on a night when he's there, and also on a night when you can have more time to hang out. The space is big with lots of natural light coming in which I loved! Bathrooms: They have restrooms for men and women. The women's restroom had two stalls. The bathroom was pretty clean. I didn't like the coloring of the bathroom, it would make me crazy if I had to sit in there for a long period of time. Service: The minute we walked in, we weren't greeted by anyone and we just looked around because we'd never been here before. It took about a minute or two for someone to help us get a table. The rest of the service was good overall. Our food came out quick. I do wish the happy hour options were explained to us when we sat down, we had to ask our waiter to explain it to us. Food: I'd say overall their food is good, it's not the best I've had in Tampa. If you want to come for a decent brunch and drinks this is a good spot. We tried the 'potato latkes' as an appetizer which was really good. I had their 'Smashburger' for my entree which was good, but I've had better. I did like their fries. The drinks were the best part! I had their 'Pink Hugo' which was really good and my friend had their 'Green Machine' which was delicious. Overall the food was good, but nothing amazing to me. Maybe I didn't order the right thing. I'd be willing to come back and try their brunch options as that seems to be what people like the most. Overall, it's a good place to come for lunch with a friend. It wasn't super busy on a weekday, so you don't need a reservation. The prices are decent, but everything in Tampa is more pricey now. **Parking Tip: they have a VERY small parking lot for customers behind the building. There is a larger gravel parking lot behind the building where you have to PAY to park. It was around $6/2 hours, I'm not sure if it's more expensive at different times. Try to look for free street parking in the area if their free lot is full before going to the paid lot! Or if you can car pool with friends do that!

We were seated at a super small table so it made for an uncomfortable situation with so little real estate available. Also the place looks like it's converted from a garage or something with metal walls and roll up doors that made the sound bounce around. The service was nice. We were well taken care of but they seemed to be spread thin because getting refills and getting our check took a bit longer than expected. One ssue was that the menu was very different from what was online via Google. I should have gone to their website I guess, but several items were not available and the filet I was so excited for had a very different set of items. No Brie au gratin potatoes or braised rainbow chard, citrus gremolata and a fig chutney. Now, let me say that my filet was delicious. I loved the sauce and the asparagus was good but for me, the potatoes were super underwhelming. A nice sauce or something would have made them better. They just tasted bland, were really dry and lacked any flavor. My wife expected the lamb or pork chops, they were both not on the menu. She got fish and chips which she really enjoyed, so it was a win. The Asian wings were our appetizer and were delightful too. Now the only real negative for us was the noise. We got there at 5:30 and it was fine. But as more people came in, the sound bounced around so bad that it became almost unbearable for me. I wanted to go so bad because people laughing and talking made my head hurt. Would I go back? Probably not. I didn't enjoy how loud it was. The food was very good though, so perhaps takeout would be more my speed. We had a nice meal and my leftovers were delicious later that evening.
