Stopped by for brunch with my friend to check out what the hype over Woon was all about. Serving up homestyle Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisine, the restaurant is located at the Pasadena-Altadena border, with weekend brunch as one of its big draws. The space is impressively decorated with beautiful, green wallpaper and complemented with authentic antiques from the owner's family. How it works is you go up to the counter to place your order and pay, after which you'll receive your number to bring over to any available table for open seating. We ordered the following items: Woon Milk Tea, Beef Noodles, Five Spice Chicken Wings, and the Milk Tea French Toast. The Beef Noodles stood out as my favorite of the bunch, as you could really taste the wok char, or how the Cantonese like to put it, "wok hei". The texture of the noodles had a great chew to it, and the steak was juicy and flavorful. I was initially excited to try the toast but it was just alright, as there was a strong citrusy scent to it, which was unexpected and not necessarily a nice complement to the black tea custard and syrup. The service was fine, somewhat transactional and not particularly friendly or warm. But everyone we interacted with got their job done. Finally able to try this new restaurant in Pasadena since it opened last year. The atmosphere was very welcoming with lots of open seating allowing for both small groups and large parties. You order at the front desk first before being given a number and finding a table. The staff were very nice, answering any questions we had about the menu or food. My friends and I ordered off their exclusive Pasadena brunch menu. We got their five spice chicken wings, sautéed vegetables with egg yolk, milk tea French toast, yeunyeung Hong Kong coffee, and a blackberry passion fruit olive cake slice. The five spice chicken wings and yeunyeung Hong Kong coffee tasted as expected, with solid flavors. The sautéed vegetables were pleasant, with the egg yolk giving it some extra flavor and a little kick of heat The blackberry passionfruit olive cake was unexpectedly nice, with the flavors working well to create a flavorful combination that wasn't too sweet or strong. The milk tea French toast also tasted really good with the black tea custard and syrup adding a lot of flavor. My only wish is that they could have added more of the custard on top. Overall, I had a great experience! Even though the items are a little pricey, everything tasted wonderful. Dropped by here since we were in the neighborhood and it looked good. From the reviews and vibe, it seemed like it would be a lot like Joy in Highland Park. Unfortunately, it's nothing like Joy. Parking wasn't too easy on a weekday afternoon. We had to park across the street on a residential street. But, hey, parking at Joy is a pain too. Maybe that's a good sign. We walked in. No line (unlike Joy). But the layout and ordering system is very much like Joy. They even have the cooler with drinks to the right when you walk in the door. Some of the menu items sounded similar to Joy, so we were pretty excited to give them a try. I went for the vegan tofu over rice and a side cucumber/tofu salad. My wife ordered the pork belly over rice and the chicken wings. We both also got a black cold-brew coffee. The total: $68.51. Oof. I think Joy is cheaper. Food came out quickly, just like Joy. The cucumber salad had baked tofu in it (rather than tofu skin), and the cucumbers were just chopped up into tiny pieces, rather than smashed, which is the way I prefer it. While there was supposed to be chili-crisp oil on it, it was actually pretty bland. Meh. Next for me came the (vegan) tofu over rice. It included some pickled vegetables, which kind overpowered the dish. It was a strange choice. I've had pickled vegetables with Chinese food before (my wife is from Hong Kong), but these kind of overpowered the dish. It also included some carrots, which I think were also pickled, giving the dish a sort of Vietnamese vibe, but not in a good way. It was pretty much all I could taste. Adding a little chili oil helped balance the flavors a bit, but not much. As a pescatarian, I couldn't try my wife's dish. But it was basically the same as mine, and she was just as underwhelmed. She said the chicken wings were the best part of her meal, but they certainly weren't amazing. In conclusion, the chicken wings were OK and the cold-brew coffee was delicious. I think this place is mostly catering to average white hipsters who come for the vibe, rather than people looking for authentic Taiwanese street food. I really wanted to like this place, because it does have a cool vibe, and everyone working there seems nice. But unlike Joy, this meal just made me sad. read more

I've been wanting to try Woon for a while now and finally went during lunch. I got the bacon n' eggs fried rice and the pork chop sandwich. The fried rice had a really smoky taste to it because of the pork belly and the chili oil started to get really spicy for me. The pork chop sandwich was really good though. It was served on a bolo bao (pineapple bun) and the onion jam really added a nice touch to it. The sandwich also had an egg which made it delicious. We came by on a Saturday morning around 10:20 AM and while there was a big line out the door, we were able to order and be seated in about 40-ish minutes. We came by for brunch and ordered off the special brunch menu as well as their Sense Coffee drinks pop up menu. Won has beautiful interior decor and only indoor seating available. There is a parking lot right at the restaurant and we were lucky enough to find parking there but there is also free street parking in the area if this is full. Milk Tea French Toast 3.75/5, was this a standard french toast? Yes! Was it super sweet? No! Did I taste much or really more than trace amounts of milk tea / black tea? I got to try three plates: the signature beef noodle, garlic gai Lan, and the bao bun. The noodle texture is great, though a little too salty in my opinion. The bao bun had a large piece of delicious pork belly in a bao bun with pickled cucumber and vegetables, that was very delicious, even with the large pork fat from the belly. The gai Lan is Chinese broccoli boiled and fried with garlic and sprinkled with sesame seeds. That was alright, nothing to write home about. The fried porkchop is juicy, the texture and the mixed flavor of sweetness, savory and tang is so balanced. drooling whenever i think about it. Then the beef noodles. The finale (it came last and worth the wait). I have always been a lover of rice cake/Tteok-bokkiki/Mochi so I am very picky when it comes to the texture of these type of dishes. IT BLEW ME AWAY. The texture is prefect for this particular dish and honestly I wanted everyone to shut up so I can have a special moment with this bowl of noodle. We visited a couple days before lunar new year and they had amazing specials. Plenty of vegan options and we ordered ALL OF THEM! They were all delicious, but my favorite was the scallion pancakes. Unfortunately, the majority of the vegan tofu items were slightly spicy and so my kids were not huge fans. The veggie noodles and scallion pancakes are good non-spicy options for vegan kids. None of the items were overlay spicy, just slightly. In additional to the delicious meal we order the lunar new year dessert special and the Ube Coconut Bao Bun, sooo sooo delicious. I really don't like writing bad reviews, but I have to say something so other people don't fall into the same trap I did. Honestly, don't come to this place unless you are a glutton for a ripoff. Let me explain. I know this spot is super "hip" and a lot of Yelp friends love it. But realistically? This place seems designed for people who just want to be "seen"--mostly well-to-do Millennials and Gen Z professionals with money to burn. The prices for the mediocre food are actually insane. For example, they charge $16 for two pieces of thin toast with a tiny bit of syrup. For comparison, you can get Hong Kong-style thick toast (that's 3 to 4 times thicker) for like $6 at HK Macau Bistro. Then there's the Pork Belly Fried Rice ($15)--it was a tiny amount of rice hidden inside a massive bowl. Even the chilled cucumbers were a letdown; they tasted exactly like the pre-packaged ones from a grocery store, not like authentic Taiwanese food at all. Despite all this, the place is packed and buzzing on social media. The only good thing I can say is that the decor is very cool/hip. But parking is non-existent. I've heard a lot about this place, especially from Camber. My partner and I actually came here back to back last weekend, once for dinner and then for brunch the following day. Woon is one of those places where it's good to get a few dishes just to share amongst your party. Are the portions small? Depends on what you order. The handmade Beef Noodles might not be as much as you're expecting, but the Bacon and Eggs Fried Rice during brunch goes a long way. I actually got so full eating my fried rice 2/3s of the way through that I had to ask my partner to finish the rest. The Bolo Bao look huge to me, and reminded me of a Chinese slider. My partner loves the Beef Noodles, and ordered them both times we went. I can understand why. You really can taste a difference between handmade noodles and store bought. Our friends live a few blocks away so we decided to walk over for dinner on a rainy day. Upon arriving, it is a order at the cashier first then sit down type situation. it is a self serve in getting your own water, to-go boxes, etc. We ordered the fried rice, beef noodles, scallion pancakes, chicken wings, tofu, and a couple of drinks. Food was alright. The part that gets me about this is the auto 20% for large parties. Understandable when at a traditional restaurant with traditional service, but for one as such where you self serve your water and you pay at the counter and tip first.... Hmm...i did not know this until after our friends told us they were slapped with the 20% charge which really sucks because we were not made aware of this and we also tipped on our own tab. Woon has brunch now! Honestly the vibes of this space always gave off more of a brunch/lunch vibe. Beef noodles and tofu skin/woodear mushroom salad were good but standard. Their noodles were a unique texture, almost like an udon in chewiness and thickness, but a little bit denser for my taste. Good amount of wok hei. The star was honestly the pork chop sandwich inside of a pineapple bun. Genius. I'll be back just for that and to try some of their drinks. Food - 3/5 In the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) where there's an abundance of amazing Chinese food it's tough not to compare but onwards with the review. I will say that I did order take out and do account for that with my review, but I don't think it would tasted much different had I ate it at the restaurant vs the less than 5min drive from the restaurant for take away. Some items are limited to only their brunch menu, so maybe I'll give that a shot and see if it changes my opinion about the food. Things we ordered: 5 spice chicken wings - 2.5 - didn't have much flavor, very dry and was over cooked which prob is why they tasted dry. Beef noodles - 3.5/5 - this was prob the best thing I got from the order and it was just ok. The noodles had a nice spring to them, but the flavors and cook was meh. Super oily very little beef included and it all sat at the bottom of the container sitting in all the oil. Just very oily which was very off putting. Wood ear mushrooms and bean curd stick - 2.5/5 - the wood ear was fine, but the bean curds were hard and tough to chew. Every experience I've had with bean curd both though my own cooking and eating it at other Asian restaurants is that it's soft. This was like they hydrated it and then somehow cooked it so much that it was tough to chew. It was almost like eating beef jerky. Pork belly bao - 3/5 - giving a 3 only because the cut of pork was generous and very tender. A bit too much fat and the bao was soft and fluffy. The size of the bao was HUGE which could be looked at as good or bad, but it was just loaded with way too much stuff and then the accompanying sauce was just really spicy. It was a lot going on for something that probably could be better. In this case less is a lot more. Scallion pancakes - 3/5 Another one of those over oily over cooked tough things. I get that since it's fried it's going to be oily, but I think because it was over cooked it just kept soaking up oil gai lan - 3.5/5 It's hard to get gai lan wrong and my only issue with this was it was super salty and the sesame seeds didn't seem to serve a purpose outside of trying to make visual presentation look better for a pretty no frills dish. Outside of how salty it was, it was just ok. Service - 4/5 Service was fine. Nothing spectacular but nothing bad to note either Ambience - 4/5 The vibe I got from this place made me feel like I stepped into Joy in highland park. Similar flow and setup except more decorations. Woon feels like Joy in the sense that it's decent Asian food for people who don't want to make the journey to the SGV or don't know where to go in the SGV or the menu seems a bit too exotic. Asian food, modernized. Ordered two things to share. Started off with a light and appetizing cucumber bean curd salad. I somehow assumed their beef noodles to be a noodle soup and was surprised when it came out as a stir fry. Portion sizes are smaller than your usual asian restaurant but I don't think it's meant to be family style. Loved the decor and service was attentive. Enjoyed the hipster 70's Chinese ambiance and the relaxed, friendly service. The wheat beer was delicious! We had the pork belly over rice, the beef noodles, the scallion pancakes, and the Chinese broccoli. They were all good, not quite great. Prices were fair and the serving sizes were reasonable. For this meal, it was about $80 including tax and tip. Easy parking and not too crowded late Sunday evening. We liked it and will be back when we are in the mood for this style of Chinese. read more

Tried Woon in Pasadena earlier this week and overall it was a mixed experience.The restaurant itself is super cute inside with a really well thought out aesthetic. The lamps, tables, wallpaper, and overall vibe are top tier. That being said, it can get pretty warm inside while dining. We ordered the scallion pancake, pork bao, fried rice, and beef noodles. Everything looked really appetizing and smelled great. Our party enjoyed the scallion pancakes and the bao the most, those were definitely the highlights. One thing that threw us off was the portion sizing. We asked the cashier ahead of time if the dishes were family style or meant for one person, and we were told family style, but when the food came out it definitely did not feel that way. It made ordering a little confusing for a group. The menu is also very limited, which I personally did not find very enticing. While the beef noodles and fried rice looked great, both were way too salty and left us feeling extremely parched, even into the next day. Overall, cute spot with some good dishes, but the heavy salt and portion confusion held it back for us. read more

4.5 stars. Food was delicious, ambiance nicely decorated and clean, service friendly. Only reason I take away half star is the food portion to price ratio is kinda small. We ordered the pork sandwich and cold sesame noodles with chicken as well as the chicken congee. My favorite was the sesame noodles-- super chewy and full of flavor. It's not al dente tho, just chewy, so I can see how it isn't everyone's cup of tea. My husband is usually not a fan of sesame flavored sauces but he enjoyed it a lot. Pork sandwich was also delicious-- interesting combo with the sweet pineapple bun but works well. Chicken congee, though still yummy, was nothing special. I prefer the traditional congee with preserved duck egg. I would come back to try other items on their menu, everything sounded good. read more
