After our VW dealer told us we need a new clutch to the tune of $2500, we decided to shop around. I spoke directly to the owner of Wrench Werks (Lance) and told him what the dealer said. He called back within 15 min with an estimate of $1216, less than half of what the dealer quoted. Suspicious, I looked for Yelp reviews and talked to Lance several times about exactly what part they'd put in, etc. We decided to entrust the VW GTI (2004) to them and I'm so happy we did! They were extremely responsive, professional, courteous and very quick. These guys work hard and know what they're doing. They also have a detailing shop on-site so you can get your car back like new. They also did a very good job. Highly recommend them! Volx German have changed their name (and ownership?). The new name of the firm is "Wrench Werks". Shop rate is $95/hr which is reasonable for Honolulu. The dealer had recommended a few unnecessary things for my car which these guys confirmed were unnecessary saving me $400-500. The work they did do was fairly priced, well done, and quick. I highly recommend them if you have a VW. Seems they are working on a host of other types of cars now too... read more

I hate taking my car to get its maintenance done, because I don't trust shops and especially my dealership (tony vw). I've never heard of wrench werks till I stumbled on them here at yelp. I trusted the reviews and damn I wasn't let down. They did everything that had to be done for my 40k maintenance check. When making thw appointmwnt with barbara, she went over everything that was to be service and how much it will come out to. I even got a $50 discount due to being a first timer. The customer service from this place can't be beat. I was even greeted coming out of my car. After your service is done, they've given my car a complimentary wash and even vaccumed my mess ass car. you will get follow emails and phone calls to see how your service went and if you had questions for the next time your car will need service. I have been using Wrench Werks since I bought my 2001 beetle as second-hand. I can't thank them enough to keep my beetle healthy and happy over the years. When you drive an old one like mine, it gets ever so important to make sure that everything is in good running condition. And sometimes even with regular maintenance, some parts just need to be replaced due to aging and out of normal wear. And those are the ones hard to notice from just driving, and when you leave them unattended, they can develop into a major issue... For someone who gets paranoid by just thinking about stalled in the middle of nowhere or busy freeway, etc., it's such a relief to have Wrench Werks as my service shop. They always gave me heads-up about the state of my car and some aging parts (and some parts which are not manufactured anymore or going to be soon so takes some time to chase down. I think this type of info is very crucial for an old car driver). They changed my shifter lever and cables this time as I started noticing my gear shift is getting harder and hesitant. I thought it is how old car's shift feels like but now with a new set, I can tell the difference. It is so smooth and feel like I'm driving a new car! I would had loved to had something good to say, seeing that i was an already broke car. But if it does not work correctly even after it was "fixed", just know they will not take responsibility for fault and unfinished business. First what they should had done was at least diagnosed the car for other reasons as to why it was shaking so bad, ie, bad motor mounts, clutch or flywheel balance was off, anything other than to just rub the blame off on after market parts, aftermarket parts have always been perfect scapegoat for shady tree biz. Parts had been already supplied and paid for and still job cost was almost 1000. Job unfinished with poor still needing to be fixed should had cost 400 max. Fixed running correctly with additional items needing to be replace 1000 to 1300 max. Instead we still have a dead car that shakes like Michael J Fox in "BACK TO THE FUTURE". read more

Took my POS there and they fixed what I asked, finished relatively fast, with as many cars as i saw there. Their labor is expensive but its about like everyone else's shop here so taking it somewhere else for cheaper labor to save you 50 bucks probably isn't worth it honestly, you do get what you pay for. They didn't push me to repair extra things and told me about things I'll need to replace in the future even though I was supposed to be moving back to the mainland. Communication was great as well. I was called twice to make sure I would be on time to my appointment. I show up early to an appnt I booked well in advance, the receptionist says the mechanics are out on lunch. I just needed someone to scan the code for a check engine light, which is complimentary. She said it would take a half hour, the mechanics would be back any minute, and she would call me then. I took a walk, grabbed some lunch. 55 minutes later, no phone call. I come back, no one has touched my car or even looked at it. The mechanics were there, just working on other cars. They asked me to wait longer, and I said no and left. Frustrated that I wasted that time and showed up early for my appnt to be ignored because I wouldn't make them money. Will go somewhere where my time and business are valued. read more

Bottom Line: Honest, Sincere, Efficient, and Great customer service. This team gets it! I have a 9 year old Volkswagen Passat. I took it in to a Volkswagen Dealership about 3.5 months ago and they took six hours to look through my car and change my oil. The price ended up being just a punch in the gut on expectations on what routine service should cost. And of course, you don't find out until after the work is complete. Yesterday, I took my car to Wrench Werks for an oil change and because my car was showing the check engine light. I almost forgot to mention that I requested an appointment the day before and without any delay, I get an email back with two appointment times I can drop off my vehicle. From the moment I walked in, Barbara greeted me and was quick to get me through a page of paperwork and on my way. They also gave me a very good approximation of what I want to have done would cost. I said great and went to get some food. It took them less than 3 hrs to do a full 53-point inspection on my car and change the oil. In the end, they charged me just for the oil change (like they agreed on) and then Aaron Park took me around my car and showed me things that were wearing down, the cost to fix it, and roughly how much time I had left to fix it before damage would occur. A real honest conversation! I even said I was good on waiting on all his recommendations and he had no issues. No pressure. I am going back to them for all my Volkswagen auto needs. I've been to other shops that are cheaper but don't do as thorough of a job as Wrench Werks does. I just purchased my first VW and quickly realized the need for experienced VW mechanics. After discovering rust in my coolant I went to Midas for a flush...they found a few leaks and suggested new radiator, thermostat, hoses etc... That's when I realized the need to have experienced VW mechanics look at it for a second opinion. They confirmed the repairs suggested by Midas and found a few more issues. It was a costly visit, ($2700+) but... I had just bought the vehicle used from a private party at a very low price. All the repairs were within reason for the miles on it. Aside from this, it drives great and I don't have a car payment! I'm well versed in the need for maintenance and that parts don't last forever. Especially when issues are ignored, causing more costly repairs in the long run. Before I took the car in, i sent an email through their website on a Sat night inquiring about an appointment and quote. Lance got right back to me that night which I was totally not expecting since it was the weekend. After making an appt, I dropped it off on a Sunday evening using their night drop and a few hours later I got a message from Lance that he secured my car inside the shop. Wow! On Monday I recieved a call from Brian, who informed me of the other suggested repairs. He was friendly and very easy to talk to. They kept my car for 3 days due to the extent of work & parts needed. During that time we played alot of phone tag because of the nature of my job. Each time I called Brian back during business hours the phone was answered by Barbra, who is also very pleasant to speak with. They were so professional and when I was able to pick the car up, inspite of the high costs, I still felt there was real value in this experience. They even washed it for me. The premises were neat, which speaks volumes of their work ethic. The office was inviting and I enjoyed a cup of coffee from the well stocked Keurig at the end of my long day. They treated me like I was the most important person they spoke to that day. One other item that impressed me was when I came in to pick the car up and pay for the repairs, Brian sat down and actually went over an entire report with me showing the work suggested, the cost of the part and labor. He then informed me of the 1yr warranty on the work performed by them and that in 6 mos they'd like to see it to check all repairs to ensure they were holding up as expected. They are transparent about what they can and cannot do, and do their best to help you with what you need. I found out that my car's transmission could not be saved after all, and instead of ripping me off, they even tried to help me find ways in which I could trade in my car and get cash for it! I took my 99 Jetta here a couple of years ago to change my timing belt and water pump. Then they said I needed to replace my oil pan because it was "leaking". There were oil spots on my garage floor on the driver's side. I wanted a second opinion and discovered TAI VW Audi in Wahiawa. He raised my car and told me that my oil pan was dry and showed me that the oil was coming from my transmission. I was livid and I never took my car back to Volx German. That "misdiagnosis" really validated my suspicions that these guys either have incompetent mechanics or take advantage of customers, like me, who leave auto repairs in their hands. I have been a loyal and happy customer of TAI VW Audi in Wahiawa ever since. read more

Something happened to Volx German. Perhaps they have changed management and/or have gotten greedy, but they are not the honest people they used to be. I have to wonder if they ever were in retrospect. I have had two bad experiences lately with them lately: one horrific, and the other luckily avoided. First, the horrific one had to do with my daughter's 1997 VW Cabrio. The transmission started slipping a few months ago. They did a "service" which amounted to changing the transmission fluid. $400. Next, they said two of the transmission "pan" seals were leaking. $450 to replace the front, $750 for the back. A few weeks later, the transmission started slipping again. Since these transmissions are "sealed," there is no way to check the fluid, no dipstick. I did some research and found out where the drain plug is. I looked in, and the drain plug was missing! Meaning, most of the fluid had leaked out. They had obviously forgot to put it in, or did so loosely and it came out. By now, the transmission was slipping so badly that I had to have it towed. In Hawaii, there are a lot of tow truck scams. My daughter called her insurance, Gieko, who said a truck was on the way at 9:00 AM. Four hours later, a tow truck arrives. They tow the car to Volx German and demand $185 cash, or they were going to take the car. I called Hawaii 5-O, who didn't want to be bothered and told me to work it out with the towing company. Remember, this is Hawaii, and no, they would never get away with something like this in the mainland (neither the tow truck company nor the police). But trust me, if you live or have lived in Hawaii, you know what I'm talking about regarding tow trucks and what they get away with. Volx German wrote the tow truck company a check for $185. Then, Volx German tacked $50 on to it, charging me $230 for the tow! How cruel, insult to injury. Marking up a tow bill $50. That is really, really bad. But what happened next is worse. Volx German would not admit to doing ANYthing wrong regarding the transmission, and even charged me another $91 to tell me they "analyzed the transmission and the plug must have cracked and come out," and the transmission was "bad all along" and named off some part that was "leaking." I did more research and learned that those drain plugs have safety valves that stop them from coming out, even if they crack. They said they could rebuild the transmission for $4,200 and that's a discount! Everyone knows you can get a transmission rebuilt for $2500 or less. So, over $2000 later, I have a car that barely limps. I had to pretty much give it away. Here's my next sleazy experience with these people. Volx German said I needed $850 worth of brake work on my other car. For what I asked? Pads, rotors, master cylinder, "kit." The brakes seem to work fine to me, but it had been awhile since I had the back done. I found a great freelance mechanic, who looked at it and, indeed, all it needed was pads in the back ($45 plus labor), everything else was fine. No warping on the rotors, no master cylinder issues. Nothing. They also charge double the regular rate for oil changes ($75) and pretty much anything else you want done. Stay away. They'll do something "very nice" in the beginning, like fix something very easy or cheap and make you think they are honest. They are not. read more

I brought my audi in last minute for a service because my oil light was on and Rod and Barbara told me without no hesitation will get it done in a hour or so. Do not take your car here, especially if you are a female, for sure you will be rudely treated, over charged, and not have your car returned to you for an entire day. They will leave your car sitting there while they wash cars. They will say you must have some work done that is not necessary telling you it is a safety issue. So I took my Passat in for a check engine light and they said it would cost $100 just to look under the hood, well okay, so I let them check it out and numerous other things were in need of repair.... I understand when a car gets older gaskets and rubber hoses and other incidentals need to be replaced (even if it is a little old lady from Pasadena only driving it on Sundays to church kinda thing). But honestly! I HAVE NEVER experienced a situation where the repair shop wants you to pay for ALL the parts and oil/coolant two weeks BEFORE the actual scheduled repair date!!!! They wanted almost a 1k to order GASKETS/RINGS and OIL /COOLANT!!!! WTF! Isn't it common practice to have GASKETS for a VW on hand at the shop already, especially when you're supposedly a shop specializing in VOLKSWAGONS??!!?! The so called "great and friendly Aaron" claimed he wanted payment for all the parts so I wouldn't have to wait for the parts to come in once they took the car in two weeks later for the actual job. Hahh! Got a real slime-ball feel for the company and needless to say I won't be going there to get my car fixed. read more

Worse place ever. Go somewhere else rather than these swindlers! This manager guy Brian said he would check my car for transmission fluid leak and exhaust leak, then he had me sign a waiver stating the inspection would cost 75.00! Ok, I said thats fine because I could apply it to the labor. The next day I got a call from him saying that he checked out the car and it would cost $390 labor as the starting job to replace a screw that was rusted - even though the screw replacement is free and the exhaust part was only $7.00- I said no thank you and asked about the transmission fluid leak. He said he didn't check and to check it would cost another $75.00 just to inspect it! Seriously! I said that I signed a paper would inspect that- he said it didnt say inspect transmission fluid and so it would be a separate charge. Seriously? He was the manager. I had no one else to go to, so I didn't get my transmission fluid inspected. Because he's a jerk. Out of all the things... Where to start....My first experience with wrench werks was lack luster to say the least. I brought my 86 vw vanagon in for work on the ignition switch issue in my steering column and some coolant leaks. After not hearing from wrench werks for a week I called in to see what was going on. After speaking with the mechanic and being put on hold for a long period of time, I was told the part had come but was broken when they got it so they were getting a new one. In total the job took over 2 weeks so they did compensate me about a 100 dollars off the labor and told me to bring in my vehicle if it had any issues. I just recently had issues again and called and explained to them my issues, knocking and coolant leaks, and they scheduled me 4 days later to bring it in. After driving across town in my half working vehicle and dropping it off they called me the next morning to tell me they couldn't work on my van and recommended me to the old mechanic I used to use. This is same car they had already done work on. After taking the van to a new mechanic, issues were found with some of the installs they did, like putting hoses on backwards and stuff like that. After all this I was upset and told wrench werks to delete my number from their system because I didn't want to be pestered by their monthly check up call. They then called me a week after this all at 3 o'clock in the middle of the work day to check up on everything. After their secretary assured me they wouldn't call me anymore. I strongly recommend finding a more professionally run operation with mechanics you can trust. Please take the time to read the response, I believe it illustrates how wrench werks doesn't own up for their own mistakes (multiple I brought up such as installing parts incorrectly) and simple says we did the best we could.
