A reservation for 2 at 845 pm and was told it was not possible to get a table outside. They said the wait would be over an hour. We were seated indoors. within 20 minutes of being seated, before any of our food came, there were at least 4 tables for two available outside empty before being filled again. Again, only two of us. In the rover with the roof gone, we pulled up like Jimmy Neutron with champagne bottles as a carry-on, gotta move on like oh darn. The sun was coming down when we arrived, but don't worry we got ice bright enough to lit up the whole room. We got seated outside with a marvelous view of LA, the city of angels embellish by bright lights and colors that won't fade in the night. It was the weekend so you know the party doesn't stop especially with Shohei Otani around now. Up in the hills high above and you feel opulence from the vibe, design, and ministration displayed by this restaurant. Its part of the experience. Our waiter was super friendly and patient with all of us. I forgot her name, but she had a nice pristine smile that made me wanna buy more drinks. It was contagious I tell you that, lol. We ordered the large Sushi Boat ($415) that can feed all six of us, Spicy Edamame ($14), and hella cocktails ($17 each) such as the Hibiscus Highball, Gin and Tonic, Yellow Dragon, Ryujin, and the Silk Whisper. There were various kinds of different sushi like salmon, bluefin tuna, yellow tail, and etc arranged exquisitely on a wooden boat for a dramatic presentation. None of the fish was fishy nor smelly. My favorite is definitely the bluefin tuna. The night was filled with laughs, good talks, and memories that will last a lifetime. Don't worry about being buzzed though, we were good, alright lol. If you want to take your mom here, do it! Take your woman here too? That's fine as well. Even having a guys night here is awesome! Just do it like Nike. You won't regret it. It overlooks the city, offering beautiful vantage points for photos, from the scenic views to the restaurant's exterior and gardens. Plenty of guests were taking selfies, and it's easy to see why. My husband and I walked from our hotel, and the uphill climb was definitely a bit of a workout. The restaurant is tucked behind the Magic Castle, and because of its elevation, it's noticeably windier. We opted to sit on the patio, and even with multiple heat lamps turned up high, I was still cold. I wore a light cotton dress with a jean jacket and definitely wasn't prepared for the chilly, windy conditions. As for the food, I ordered the braised short ribs with a side of white rice, while my husband had the chicken katsu and California rolls. He enjoyed the rolls but found the katsu to be just average. I felt similarly about the short ribs--they were decent, but not particularly memorable. For dessert, I had the salted honey tiramisu, which I enjoyed more than my entrée. The service, however, was excellent. Our server was attentive, personable, and checked in regularly without being intrusive. We ended up chatting for a bit and learned he used to live in the DC area, not far from where we are in Maryland. I had been wanting to try this place because of the atmosphere and views. I had seen some of the lower reviews online beforehand but still thought it would be worth trying. Unfortunately, I was gravely mistaken. The main theme throughout the experience was the disappointing quality of service. They charged $20 for valet, which I thought was completely fine. We were seated promptly since there were plenty of open tables during brunch. However, the table itself felt extremely cramped to the point where my group was practically shoulder to shoulder. Our server was friendly and nice overall, but it was difficult to flag him down whenever we wanted to place orders or get refills on water. It seemed like there were very few servers working, which likely contributed to the decline in service quality. The food came out as each item was finished, so people in our group received their meals at different times, which honestly was not an issue. However, things started getting frustrating when I asked one of the food runners, Gio (a man with reddish-brown hair), who had come by to drop off some of our food, if he could bring additional water for the table. He responded by saying, "Oh, that's your server's job." I just sat there a little confused by that interaction. Unfortunately, it did not stop there. The same food runner, Gio, later brought out our $37 Yamashiro Roll and explained the situation in a way that made us believe there had been a mistake and that we had received an extra roll for free because of it. After everyone else had received their food, we realized that my mom still had not received the Yamashiro Roll she had actually ordered. We flagged down another food runner and our server, who went back to the kitchen and apologized for the delay in service and for the missing roll. Once the missing Yamashiro Roll finally arrived, Gio came back to our table in a confrontational manner and said, "I will be letting your server know we will be charging you the extra $37." My entire group was confused because the earlier interaction had made it seem like the additional roll was due to a mistake on the restaurant's end and was being given to us. At that point, I was completely over the experience. More specifically, we ordered the following dishes: Yamashiro Roll ($37): Low-quality roll that was nowhere near worth the price. The fish did not taste fresh and the sushi rice was hard. Chirashi Bowl ($39): Also disappointing. The fish quality tasted low and the rice underneath felt undercooked. Sashimi Pizza ($32): Essentially sashimi placed on top of a cracker. Blue Crab Benedict ($26): Very small portion and did not even come with a side. Chicken Katsu Sando ($21): Better than the dishes I mentioned above, although that is not saying much. Matcha French Toast ($21): Probably the best thing we had at the restaurant, although parts of the toast were slightly burned. Since I was celebrating my birthday, they brought out a sparkling candle with cheesecake and fruit, which tasted fine. Unfortunately, I already had such a sour taste in my mouth from the overall experience that I could barely smile during it. We also were not the only table experiencing issues. A nearby group actually moved tables because they felt cramped and later called over the manager to discuss the quality of both the food and service. They specifically mentioned issues with the rice and how the fish did not taste fresh. Additionally, another table across from us had a problem when they tried explaining that they had not ordered a particular dish. The interaction with staff also seemed combative and slightly annoyed. The one highlight from the experience was the view and the photographer, who made our group genuinely happy with her service. Although the photos were expensive, she was one of the only people there who felt like she had any real customer service skills. Overall, this ended up being one of the most overhyped and overpriced restaurants I have tried. We had a friend visiting from Florida whose friend had recommended we go to Yamashiro. They only offer valet parking for $20 + tip. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation so walked around their lovely grounds a bit, but were able to be seated early outdoors. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal, and the live DJ was mixing music with records! The structure for dining in is ornate and the restrooms located down a stairwell even had an attendant. While the menu was extensive, the food was honestly underwhelming for the prices charged. I ordered kabocha miso soup which was flavorful but small in portion, plus hamachi collar and tantanmen. The tantanmen was cold and refreshing, but was surprised that the wagyu was ground beef. The hamachi collar was the highlight of the dinner, tasty and quite large. I also ordered the shaved ice for dessert which was nice and light. As the sun set and the restaurant darkened the lights came on and the powerful heat lamps kept us warm. They have since changed the format, but you used to drive up to a beautiful Japanese palace! Now, you drive up, give your car to valet, and then walk through a busy patio area to see the front of the palace looking restaurant. It's still impressive, but the patio definitely takes away from the structure. I understand why they put in the patio seating. Things changed during Covid. But the outdoor seating became popular because of the breathtaking views, beautiful, southern California weather and fresh air. Obviously, this also allowed them to expand their seating area and have more customers! One thing I love about the outdoor seating is that they have so many heat lamps and sail shades so you can stay cozy while outdoors if the wind kicks up a bit. The menu is pricey. You're definitely paying for the amazing palace, the architecture, the artwork, and the breathtaking views. It's a special place. There are gardens you can stroll through, and a giant Buddha sculpture. There is a bar in the lower part of the garden. It's just an amazing property with lots of history. I can't say enough. Back to the menu, it's a Japanese inspired menu with noodles, seafood, sushi. I think there's an option to please just about everyone's palate. They also have a nice dessert menu and excellent cocktails. If you drive, be prepared to have your car valet parked. The cost is $20 plus tip. I definitely think this place is worth it. I would definitely check out the garden, inside and outside see where you wanted to be seated. They were able to sit us by the garden. The vibes inside and outside is completely different. If you choose to see outside, I'd say sit by the 2 person high top for the LA view. There's a DJ there as well. Otherwise sit inside by the garden and it's very relaxed and zen. Sashimi nacho - 6pcs of chip with sashimi 5/5 Yellowtail Collar - Good size with lot of meat. Flavors isn't strong but there's some soy sauce with the dish that you can dip 4.5/5 Branzino - A smaller portion fish being a main course. It came with perfectly stir fried beans. 4/5 Grilled Octopus - It has no sides just one piece of chopped octopus. Kinda spicy and too salty. We ordered three sushi rolls, a few drinks appetizers, and a glass bottle of spring water here's where things got a little bit tricky we ordered the fortune cookie for the birthday dessert which came out about 30 minutes after we ordered it which was fine. We understand that it was busy Saturday night, but they completely spelled my name wrong and I told my waiter three times how to spell my name kind of ruined the birthday moment I felt so unspecial and that I was just another number we even left $100 tip on top of the $308 meal just to show them that we had money but I'm sure I would've left $150 if things would've went a little bit better... thank you for the apology, however i will likely go somewhere i'm more appreciated for my birthday read more

I've been wanting to try Yamashiro for a long time, and I finally made it. Because the restaurant has been around for so many years and so many people visit, my expectations were really high. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I expected at all. I thought I was coming for high‑end Japanese food, but the menu leans much more toward Chinese‑style dishes. And if you actually want good Chinese food, you're better off going to Alhambra. If you're looking for premium Japanese cuisine -- nigiri, sashimi, and fresh cuts -- this is not the place. I forgot to take a photo of the salmon nigiri, but it was $15 for two pieces, and the color looked off -- almost like it wasn't fresh. Definitely not what you'd expect from a restaurant with this kind of reputation. However, if your goal is simply to enjoy a view while eating, Yamashiro delivers. The ambiance is stunning - gorgeous gardens and views of the city. It's a huge space and would be perfect for a special date or event. We had a group of 7 adults and 1 baby, and despite the large party, it felt welcoming. Food: 3/5 Good, but not outstanding - especially considering the high prices (for example, $36 for a roll you could normally find for ~$18-$20 elsewhere). Service: 5/5 Our server, TJ, was incredibly attentive. Checked on us frequently and was very kind. When one of the salmon dishes arrived undercooked, he quickly took it back, had a fresh plate made, and made sure we were all taken care of. It took a bit longer to get the new entree out, but we really appreciated the effort and the fresh plate. One note: the only parking option is valet, which is $16. And because our party was large, an 18% gratuity was already added. Overall, I'd give Yamashiro 4/5 stars - the ambiance and service really stood out, even if the food was just okay. This review is for Yamashiro. We had a 7:00 PM reservation and it is a must. If you do not have one, you likely will not be seated. If you are going just for drinks and the view, you are good to go. But for dinner, make the reservation. The drive up honestly is not bad at all. I have seen reviews saying it is narrow and feels like a long drive up a mountain. I have lived in San Francisco, so this drive was nothing. Completely manageable and not intimidating at all. It is valet parking only and runs about $20 to $25. We sat at the bar first and were helped by Mou, short for Mourita. What an awesome mixologist. She was busy but still made time to chat with us. Super sweet and she looked just like Hailee Steinfeld. She really set the tone for the evening. When our table was ready, the hostess personally came to get us, which felt like such a nice touch. We were then greeted by Michael, who took great care of us throughout dinner. We started with oysters and nachos. Delicious and incredibly fresh. For our entrées, we ordered the Chilean sea bass and the braised short ribs. Both were absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, and worth ordering again. We ended the night with the shortcake, which was the perfect sweet finish. After dinner, we headed back to the bar for one more drink and took some time to walk around the property. Normally I'm such a fan of this place- been coming here for anniversaries for the past several years. But I was a bit disappointed with this visit. First of all, we were sat inside, near the pond. I was quite happy with this location as I had never sat near it before, but we were seated on the outer edge rather than directly near the pond. When we asked the hostess if we could occupy one of the empty tables directly next to the railing of the garden area, she said that those were specially reserved. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but there were plenty of tables directly next to the railing that were empty for the duration of our stay, not to mention that the table we pointed out was empty during our entire stay. To add insult to injury, when a couple seated behind us asked to move to one of these tables, the hostess immediately obliged. Other than that, our server (who did not introduce himself by name btw) didn't seem as knowledgeable about the menu. I asked about the kombucha miso soup, and he didn't know what kombucha was. I know that the restaurant rotates its menu every so often, but I wasn't really a fan of this season's menu either. We ordered the sea bass, pork chop, steak garlic noodles, glazed carrots, and hamachi collar. Actually, the sea bass, steak garlic noodles, and hamachi collar were good, but the glazed carrots weren't cooked as thoroughly as I would've liked, and the pork chop tasted like it was made out a very lean and dry cut of pork. I wish there was also a little more consistency with bar drinks as well. Ordered a Japanese gin and tonic at the start, which was delicious, but when I ordered it again at the end of the night, it was doused too heavily on lime to the point where I didn't enjoy it. This place is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. It's located on the top of a hill in a residential area. Parking: I didn't even try for street parking but it looked rough, valet is about $20-$25 and self parking is a bit more expensive. They're very fast though. Food: 4/5 for the price! The steak pasta wasn't as amazing as I had expected it to be but everything was still good! Service: It was hard to flag down a server when I wanted drinks so we just got up and head to the bar. STEPH JUDGEMENT: A theme park of a restaurant, with a view worth the price of admission. I'd been wanting to check this place out for years, ever since reading about its renovation. The hubby and I decided to walk up to it after parking near the Hollywood/Highland complex, as we'd already been out on a hike earlier and didn't mind a little more sweat. It's all valet parking up by the restaurant. It wasn't a fancy date night for us, but it certainly was for a lot of people we saw there. We were a bit early for our reservations so we had some time to walk around. We were impressed by its size and theme park-like theatricality. That theme park feeling was further emphasized when one of those photographers showed up who take pics of you and then try to sell you prints later for $30. We passed on that, but I'm sure they do brisk business. We got sat at one of the tall 2-seater tables by the railing, which had a breathtaking view of the city below. This is what we'd come here for. We ordered: - Spicy edamame (overcooked and unappealingly doused with chili crisp, but tasted ok) - Green Beans (surprisingly good, with snap) - Mixed mushrooms (good, but because it was doused in butter) - Avocado crispy rice (didn't realize this would come in a roll form, but it was quite good) - we also got a variety of wines and sakes--all fine. Overall the food & drinks were very spendy for what they were--the view tax was heavily in effect. The service was friendly, but not always prompt, especially as the evening wore on and the place got crowded. Speaking of which, it was incredible how much it got filled up on a Wednesday night. So much so, in fact, that we could see they were anxious to turn over our table, as we'd been lingering. Yamashiro feels like it's own little city. Truly from the moment I got out of my car, I felt like I was on a trip. The restaurant and land it sits on is huge and there's plenty of seating and places to walk around. If you want to go somewhere for pictures, this is a perfect spot. The drive is long and a bit difficult. It's up a windy thin road and once you arrive, the only option is valet. As for the food and service, it's all amazing. Their cocktails are pretty and the portions are big. I loved the garlic noodles. Everything I ordered was perfect to share. They offer a wide dessert menu too. There are beautiful views of Los Angeles from every angle and spot you sit at. You simply will not be disappointed when coming here. read more

I came on a Tuesday night to celebrate my birthday and wow, what an experience. First off the location and view is so beautiful, perfect for a date night or to celebrate. Our server was very attentive and sweet, also recommended the best dishes since it was my boyfriend and I's first time trying Yamashiro Hollywood. The Sashimi Nachos were incredible, and wow they are a great portion size for sharing 9/10. I got the Aurora Roll as my main dish, so fresh and flavorful 9/10. For dessert we got both the Matcha Cream Puff and Banana Doughnuts, not knowing that the portions were so big. Out of the two desserts I highly recommend the matcha cream puff especially since I kept going back for me even after I was stuffed 10/10. Honestly you can't go wrong with this spot! read more

I have been there in the past a few times and enjoyed it tremendously but had not been there in quite some time because I was living out of the country. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed!!!! The Garlic pasta with beef had no taste, extremely bland.. definitely no garlic taste. The sushi, I must say I have tasted better sushi in small shopping center restaurants. I was very very disappointed. And the waiter was not very friendly at all. So sad to see such a beautiful place change so much! read more

Is Yamashiro Hollywood touristy? Yes. Maybe a little overrated? Sure. But does it have some of the best views in LA? Absolutely. And the service is fantastic. I used to go to Yamashiro in my 20s, and back then it felt so fancy to me. Since my boyfriend is new to LA, I decided to take him because I wanted him to experience it for himself - one of the most iconic dining spots in the city. The venue is gorgeous, the food is actually really good, and the property itself has so much history. They also lean into some cheesy tourist gimmicks - like having a photographer come around and take your photo, then trying to sell it to you in a souvenir frame like you're at a theme park The frame is super cheap quality... but honestly? The photo came out cute so we bought it anyway. I'm pretty sure they were even selling Yamashiro hats. It was also really sweet because we saw someone get engaged while we were there. I will say, the weather was not great the night we went, and those outdoor heaters were fighting for their lives. My poor partner was freezing. Don't sleep on the sashimi pizza- it's fantastic. And the donut holes literally melt in your mouth. read more
