I booked this restaurant for birthday 2 months ago. From the moment arrived on a weeknight, the vibes were off. The hosts, a larger woman, was very rude and acted like we still needed a reservation. I asked to sit outside and she said they'll try but no guarantees (once again, booked this months ago and wrote in notes). I mentioned it was my birthday and she just blankly stared and said "ok?" My friend and I kind of laughed out the rude interaction until she placed us at the last table outside near parking , on a slant on the hill. It was such a bad experience that it made us get up and leave. No birthday dinner, just went home. Went here for my sisters birthday for the first time - I recommend getting the valet or an uber as there is no free parking at the restaurant. We had a pretty big party so we had to be seated outside, but couples and groups of 4 can possibly be seated inside the illustrious garden room. After countless Yamashiro visits through the years, I've seen a decline in recent times (let's say post-pandemic) that truly saddens my soul. This review is strictly on where things seem to stand today, and what I experienced during the last ~3 times I've dined here. Location - still as amazing as ever. 5/5 for the views, where it sits above Hollywood, and the proximity to Magic Castle. The only consistent part, truly, and that's simply because they can't change it! Brunch - I was not impressed with the offerings and, ultimately, how it all tasted. 3/5 because dinning in the late morning offers gorgeous views, sunny and uplifting weather, cute sun dress attire, and the dishes are meant to be fun and creative - it just doesn't hit like it should, and especially at that price point. Valet - what the hell happened with valet? Why is it such a hot mess now? Why are cars just stacked up wherever? How does the cost make sense based on service and convenience? I was genuinely concerned that there would be a bumper cars situation, and waiting on our cars took foreverrrrr. 2/5 for ending each visit on a slightly sour note. "Patio Seating" - in the age of COVID and social distancing, they started just adding more and more tables and chairs to the driveway leading up to Yamashiro. Hello, no wonder valet has taken a huge hit - there's less and less space to actually park! I guess they want to fit as many patrons as possible to maximize revenue, but sitting somewhere on the sloped driveway and feeling your table and chair teeter around is not fun or comfortable, even despite the cool views. I do like the lights at night, but the cons outweigh the pros. I would've expected them to clear up the driveway, given we are no longer social distancing. 2/5. Interior garden seating - I like garden seating a lot, minus the mosquitos and flies. I must be doing something wrong because I haven't been able to get a reservation out there (or, rather, in there?) in years. Positives: nice spot to take pics, and you're right by the restroom. Negatives: a lot of people walk about the area to take pictures and use the restroom. 4/5. Food - Items that I fondly enjoyed for years just don't look or taste like they used to. My friend speculated that they may have swapped out prime ingredients for lower quality ones, which would make sense to combat cost creep. Still, given how prices go up on the menu, it's a disappointment. You're essentially paying for the vibe and setting as opposed to the food and service, as those don't seem to be as prioritized these days. Food was a 4/5 before 2020 and a 3/5 in 2026. Hillside area - Another aspect I used to love but now barely recognize. The benches are still there and the hillside is generally well-maintained. You can still snap some gorgeous pictures before or after your meal. However, the areas down below where you could sit, hang out, and grab a drink are closed off or no longer available. It's not always feasible to even get to the statues. There's a hookah lounge of sorts down there. 3.5/5. Service - I alluded to this earlier but service is nowhere near as attentive as it once was. Perhaps it's because they pack so many people on site. Perhaps they don't have enough staff during peak hours. 3.5/5. All in all, Yamashiro is such an iconic part of LA. Always wanted to come here because I'd heard about the views, and they definitely lived up to the hype! Excellent views of the city, and we came on a clear day, so we could see for miles! The decor is excellent! I love Japan, and have been there twice, so the style of the building and the walkable path with the koi ponds really spoke to me! This is a go-to place when I want to dine with friends or visitors. Reservations are a must and seating is available indoors and on the patio. I've got to say their service is at an exceptionally high level. The waiters are knowledgeable and answered all our questions. I was part of a group of six persons and we were seated on the patio. The city view added to the exquisite ambiance. Parking is all valet and no nearby street parking is available. I'm not a fan of valet parking but the price was reasonable and we didn't have a long wait to get our car retrieved after dinner. I had the Chilean Sea Bass. So my 1st time here and was excited to know this is the restaurant where they filmed the Crazy 88 scene in Kill Bill. (If youve not seen the movie, go watch it). In the rover with the roof gone, we pulled up like Jimmy Neutron with champagne bottles as a carry-on, gotta move on like oh darn. There were various kinds of different sushi like salmon, bluefin tuna, yellow tail, and etc arranged exquisitely on a wooden boat for a dramatic presentation. None of the fish was fishy nor smelly. My favorite is definitely the bluefin tuna. The night was filled with laughs, good talks, and memories that will last a lifetime. Don't worry about being buzzed though, we were good, alright lol. It overlooks the city, offering beautiful vantage points for photos, from the scenic views to the restaurant's exterior and gardens. Plenty of guests were taking selfies, and it's easy to see why. My husband and I walked from our hotel, and the uphill climb was definitely a bit of a workout. The restaurant is tucked behind the Magic Castle, and because of its elevation, it's noticeably windier. We opted to sit on the patio, and even with multiple heat lamps turned up high, I was still cold. I wore a light cotton dress with a jean jacket and definitely wasn't prepared for the chilly, windy conditions. As for the food, I ordered the braised short ribs with a side of white rice, while my husband had the chicken katsu and California rolls. He enjoyed the rolls but found the katsu to be just average. I felt similarly about the short ribs--they were decent, but not particularly memorable. For dessert, I had the salted honey tiramisu, which I enjoyed more than my entrée. The service, however, was excellent. Our server was attentive, personable, and checked in regularly without being intrusive. We ended up chatting for a bit and learned he used to live in the DC area, not far from where we are in Maryland. We arrived an hour ahead of our reservation so we could wander the grounds & enjoy the views, delicious cocktails in hand. On the reservation I checked the box indicating it was our anniversary. We started with the sashimi pizza, pleased it wasn't overly dowsed in truffle oil. The server advised the steak with garlic noodles is a house favorite, sauce on the noodles appeared to be a bit skimpy; but the flavor was all there. Creamy albacore roll isn't something we see on every sushi menu and it was fine, albeit not terribly exciting. We thought we'd order a 4th dish, but were totally satiated. Before our check arrived, they presented us with 2 complimentary glasses of prosecco and a small slice of cheesecake with passion fruit sauce & fresh fruit (the server pointed out this tasty small slice was not made in house, like their other cheesecake). The food was genuinely very good, but if I'm being honest, the real star of the evening was the history. Walking through a building that's been standing for over 100 years, overlooking Hollywood, made the entire experience feel special before the first bite even arrived. I found myself just as interested in the architecture and the stories behind the place as I was in the menu. Our waiter was fantastic. We had a friend visiting from Florida whose friend had recommended we go to Yamashiro. They only offer valet parking for $20 + tip. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation so walked around their lovely grounds a bit, but were able to be seated early outdoors. The structure for dining in is ornate and the restrooms located down a stairwell even had an attendant. While the menu was extensive, the food was honestly underwhelming for the prices charged. I ordered kabocha miso soup which was flavorful but small in portion, plus hamachi collar and tantanmen. The tantanmen was cold and refreshing, but was surprised that the wagyu was ground beef. The hamachi collar was the highlight of the dinner, tasty and quite large. I also ordered the shaved ice for dessert which was nice and light. As the sun set and the restaurant darkened the lights came on and the powerful heat lamps kept us warm. I had been wanting to try this place because of the atmosphere and views. I had seen some of the lower reviews online beforehand but still thought it would be worth trying. Unfortunately, I was gravely mistaken. The main theme throughout the experience was the disappointing quality of service. They charged $20 for valet, which I thought was completely fine. We were seated promptly since there were plenty of open tables during brunch. However, the table itself felt extremely cramped to the point where my group was practically shoulder to shoulder. Our server was friendly and nice overall, but it was difficult to flag him down whenever we wanted to place orders or get refills on water. It seemed like there were very few servers working, which likely contributed to the decline in service quality. The food came out as each item was finished, so people in our group received their meals at different times, which honestly was not an issue. However, things started getting frustrating when I asked one of the food runners, Gio (a man with reddish-brown hair), who had come by to drop off some of our food, if he could bring additional water for the table. He responded by saying, "Oh, that's your server's job." I just sat there a little confused by that interaction. Unfortunately, it did not stop there. The same food runner, Gio, later brought out our $37 Yamashiro Roll and explained the situation in a way that made us believe there had been a mistake and that we had received an extra roll for free because of it. After everyone else had received their food, we realized that my mom still had not received the Yamashiro Roll she had actually ordered. We flagged down another food runner and our server, who went back to the kitchen and apologized for the delay in service and for the missing roll. Once the missing Yamashiro Roll finally arrived, Gio came back to our table in a confrontational manner and said, "I will be letting your server know we will be charging you the extra $37." My entire group was confused because the earlier interaction had made it seem like the additional roll was due to a mistake on the restaurant's end and was being given to us. At that point, I was completely over the experience. More specifically, we ordered the following dishes: Yamashiro Roll ($37): Low-quality roll that was nowhere near worth the price. The fish did not taste fresh and the sushi rice was hard. Chirashi Bowl ($39): Also disappointing. The fish quality tasted low and the rice underneath felt undercooked. Sashimi Pizza ($32): Essentially sashimi placed on top of a cracker. Blue Crab Benedict ($26): Very small portion and did not even come with a side. Chicken Katsu Sando ($21): Better than the dishes I mentioned above, although that is not saying much. Matcha French Toast ($21): Probably the best thing we had at the restaurant, although parts of the toast were slightly burned. Since I was celebrating my birthday, they brought out a sparkling candle with cheesecake and fruit, which tasted fine. Unfortunately, I already had such a sour taste in my mouth from the overall experience that I could barely smile during it. We also were not the only table experiencing issues. A nearby group actually moved tables because they felt cramped and later called over the manager to discuss the quality of both the food and service. They specifically mentioned issues with the rice and how the fish did not taste fresh. Additionally, another table across from us had a problem when they tried explaining that they had not ordered a particular dish. The interaction with staff also seemed combative and slightly annoyed. The one highlight from the experience was the view and the photographer, who made our group genuinely happy with her service. Although the photos were expensive, she was one of the only people there who felt like she had any real customer service skills. Overall, this ended up being one of the most overhyped and overpriced restaurants I have tried. Came here with my fiancé for a dinner date on a Saturday night. To start off it is not the easiest to get too & parking is very small. It is ONLY valet parking. We arrived at around 8:30pm for a 9:45pm reservation (all that was available) the aesthetics are beautiful to say the least. The staff is very friendly and very nice. We got to explore the gardens and take in the scenic views before getting seated to our table. Beautiful property & of course instagram worthy photos which everyone is there capturing. As we sat down our waiter Mike was very informative and attentive. Amazing service and he was great, we enjoyed having him assist us. We ordered some drinks and our main courses. I got the steak garlic noodles and my fiancé got the steak. Both dishes were very good. Food came out very fast too after ordering which was nice. The bathrooms are very (Hot) & a long line for the girlies. Our bill for 3 drinks and 2 plates came out to about 150$ not including tip. Personally your paying more for the vibe, the aesthetic and what not rather than the food but other than that it is a romantic evening I recommend if you are look for a different experience. We had a wonderful waiter named Cecil. He was excellent with his recommendations, provided outstanding service, and was extremely personable. We started with the California roll, pork belly bao buns, and tempura. The bao buns were delicious and packed with flavor--the pork belly was cooked perfectly, and the bao itself was soft and bursting with taste. The California roll was very good (as expected), and the tempura was excellent: crispy, well-seasoned, and served with a great sauce. The pork belly bao buns truly stole the show among the appetizers. For our main courses, we ordered the branzino, Wagyu roll, baked salmon roll, and garlic steak noodles. The branzino was fire--cooked to absolute perfection. The garlic steak noodles were loaded with flavor, and the baked salmon roll was superb. The Wagyu roll was divine, though it's prepared more in a tartar style (so if you're not a fan of tartar, you may want to skip it). Made a reservation for my wife and I for the evening of 4th of July over two months in advance. The sole purpose of making the reservations was to have a great view of the fireworks over dinner. A reservation for 2 at 845 pm and was told it was not possible to get a table outside. They said the wait would be over an hour. Yamashiro has taken $475 from me and does nothing to return it. The charges to my bank card(s) were made on June 1, 2026. It's now August 15, two and a half months later. The last I heard from a Yamashiro person was on July 25, an inconclusive and incoherent response, and have been ignored since. It all started when I booked a reservation for a birthday for June 3. Along with the reservation, I tried to order a "smash cake" through the ordering webpage. The page says the cake must be ordered at least 24 hours before the dinner reservation. I presume part of why that is is that a personalized message (on paper) has to be prepared to be put *inside* the cake (which is formed around the message). After completing the web-based order form, however, the final "Place Order" button malfunctioned. One could not press the button; it had a symbol on it indicating it could not be depressed. To try to get the web form to respond--to enable the Place Order button to become clickable--I tried different combinations of entering the info in the form. Some web forms are fussy; they don't "like" if you included dashes or spaces. No luck. I tried a different web browser. I tried a different bank card. Each time I tried to "Place Order," the button was X'ed out. There was no confirmation page, nor was any confirmation email received. I called Yamashiro at the "Reception" number (the only phone number they give out) and explained the problem. The person (understandably) could not diagnose the website issue, but said when I come for the dinner, before the dinner just order the cake then and tell them the message that was supposed to go inside. I found this response unsatisfactory. Why does the website say the cake needs to be ordered 24 hours in advance if you can just order it when you show up? And how was I supposed to give them the personalized message to be put inside? Slip them a piece of paper with the message written? Keep in mind that this was a birthday dinner and the cake was supposed to be a surprise at the end of the meal. Why would I go to someone upon arrival and, with the birthday person there, have a discussion about how to make the cake? Moreover, the person from Reception did not inspire confidence that I could actually get the cake at the last minute, so there was a good chance someone else would say "Sorry, it's too late. I don't know why told you to do this, but we can't make the cake now." Therefore, I sent an email--again there is only one "Reception" contact email available--to order the cake (in advance) that way. In the meantime, however, I looked at two bank card accounts and saw I had been charged for a cake order a total of SIX TIMES. Evidently, after many times of trying to click that "Place Order" button, some times randomly went through. So, on June 1, when I contacted Reservations by email to try to get the cake order confirmed (for the June 3 dinner reservation), I explained the multiple mistaken charges with all the details. (On June 2) I received the reply "I'm sorry for the frustration; this is not the experience we want you to have, and it may be an error on our end. May I ask what date and time you placed the smash cake order for, as well as the reservation name and message, so I can input that for you. We've forwarded this to our management team so they can review it and assist you directly. Please allow them some time to follow up with you." And after I gave the requested info, they said, "Hello, I have input your smash cake order and noted it on your reservation. Our managers are currently working on resolving this issue for you, and as soon as we have any updates, we'll be sure to reach out. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out, and we look forward to welcoming you to Yamashiro Hollywood." So, the dinner happened, the cake happened, but the issue was not resolved. I wrote back on June 8 asking for confirmation that they were attending to the issue. No reply. Wrote again June 22. No reply. I called Reservations at the end of June and the person I spoke to said they would "forward" the message/issue to management again, and they'd reach back. Wrote again on July 14. It's absurd that "Reception" is the only contact there is. And the people who reply don't say who they are--don't sign their messages with their name. Very unprofessional. On July 24, someone named "Leslie"--no idea what their position is, and they don't sign their messages either--says they can't find the charges. I send copies of my bank statements with the charges marked. Leslie asks if my statements say so-and-so, and I say you have the statements. Leslie says they can't "find" charges on their side and have to figure out what's going on. It's simple: Refund my money now. Figure out the accounts on your time. Wasted so much of my time, accrued interest on my cards, and still not a word since July. The organization is a black hole with no one to reach. read more

Yamashiro never disappoints! This is the place to bring someone when you want to impress them with beautiful views of Hollywood and Los Angeles. It's nestled in the Hollywood Hills so driving to the restaurant is a treat for visitors who would not otherwise experience of this place. They have since changed the format, but you used to drive up to a beautiful Japanese palace! Now, you drive up, give your car to valet, and then walk through a busy patio area to see the front of the palace looking restaurant. It's still impressive, but the patio definitely takes away from the structure. I understand why they put in the patio seating. Things changed during Covid. But the outdoor seating became popular because of the breathtaking views, beautiful, southern California weather and fresh air. Obviously, this also allowed them to expand their seating area and have more customers! One thing I love about the outdoor seating is that they have so many heat lamps and sail shades so you can stay cozy while outdoors if the wind kicks up a bit. The menu is pricey. You're definitely paying for the amazing palace, the architecture, the artwork, and the breathtaking views. It's a special place. There are gardens you can stroll through, and a giant Buddha sculpture. There is a bar in the lower part of the garden. It's just an amazing property with lots of history. I can't say enough. Back to the menu, it's a Japanese inspired menu with noodles, seafood, sushi. I think there's an option to please just about everyone's palate. They also have a nice dessert menu and excellent cocktails. If you drive, be prepared to have your car valet parked. The cost is $20 plus tip. I definitely think this place is worth it. I had such a beautiful experience at Yamashiro Hollywood. The location is absolutely stunning, choosing between sitting along the outdoor railing with sweeping views or inside in the serene garden setting. Both options felt special. We came on a Saturday night with a reservation, and although it was busy, the space is so large that it never felt crowded or overwhelming. The views overlooking Los Angeles truly make the entire experience feel elevated. Yamashiro has been on my to go list for long time. Glad I finally had a chance to check it out. This restaurant is BEAUTIFUL. I would definitely check out the garden, inside and outside see where you wanted to be seated. They were able to sit us by the garden. The vibes inside and outside is completely different. If you choose to see outside, I'd say sit by the 2 person high top for the LA view. There's a DJ there as well. Otherwise sit inside by the garden and it's very relaxed and zen. Sashimi nacho - 6pcs of chip with sashimi 5/5 Yellowtail Collar - Good size with lot of meat. Flavors isn't strong but there's some soy sauce with the dish that you can dip 4.5/5 Branzino - A smaller portion fish being a main course. It came with perfectly stir fried beans. 4/5 Grilled Octopus - It has no sides just one piece of chopped octopus. Kinda spicy and too salty. Not my fav - 2.5/5 Parking - make sure you factor the in the parking cost. This restaurant is absolutely breathtaking beautiful. The views you get of LA are spectacular! I would come back solely for the views. The food is good we enjoyed the tea and some drinks and some basic sushi rolls all were good. They did a desert for my friend's birthday which was a matcha cake very tasty as well. I would definitely make a reservation we made one for 7:30 and it's the perfect time we were able to catch the sunset while we waited for our table and then enjoy the night views. The Service was good as well everyone was friendly and attentive. read more
