We like the food from Yen Yen. Our Kids love it (especially orange chicken). Not a very Chinese experience, but tasty.

The food has been different the last few times I ordered, I asked if they had a new cook, she said no. I asked why the name on the menus is now Yan Yan, she said mistake. I did a little research and found it is different owners which explains a lot. I called to order and asked what the special was for the lunch menu. She said beef and broccoli. I said isn't it shrimp know, she said it was Thursday and that's a Friday item. I reminded her it WAS Friday actually. So ordered the lunch #1 with the shrimp kow. I noticed how dirty the windows were and the whole place looked run down. I took my food as carry out and when I arrived at my destination and opened the food, it was not shrimp kow or even beef and broccoli, it was chicken and broccoli. I called she same come back and get the right food. I couldn't so did go back after work and she re-made my lunch correctly. The lunch came with an egg foo young and fried rice neither of which tasted good. I tried to eat the re-made lunch the next day. The shrimp was much smaller than they used to be and very dried out. The fried rice was again not tasting good and I just gave up and threw away the egg foo young as it hadn't tasted good the day before. I'm done with them. We have been to yen yen for lunch many times and it is typically good and portions are large. But last night we ordered take out and were a bit disappointed. I ordered Kung pal beef with noodles, which was very tasty, but I was hard pressed to find the beef. It almost seemed as though they forgot to put it in or ran out of beef. This is not something you can easily check before eating, so not sure you can really do much about it. Maybe yen yen owners will see this review and make sure it doesn't happen again. read more

I've eaten here about a dozen times. The sweet and sour soup is delicious, but everything else is mediocre. My wife order the pressed duck, my son order the beef chow fun, and I ordered the Kung Pao chicken. Believe it or not, all three dishes had exactly the same brown sauce, so not at all authentic. I keep going back hoping that things will improve, but they have not. It's too bad because the Buffalo Grove area could really use a good authentic Chinese restaurant. read more

I grew up on the north side of chicago. There used to be a place on Devon ave. called Pekin House. They had the best egg rolls. You could taste the peanut butter. Lo and behold, Yen Yen is awesome. I have been a patron of the YEN YEN restaurant on Arlington Heights Road since 1981. I would periodically pick up from the Buffalo Grove location on Half Day road on days that the Arl Hts loc was closed. Although the chefs at the Half Day location prepared the dishes slightly differently than the Arl Hts location, it was never bad. During 2017 and early 2017 I have picked up a few times from the Half Day location. Each time I was disappointed. Fried rice that tasted like they smoked (too hot) the oil. Shrimp that was mealy and not properly de-veined. Eggroll that was greasy, lacked crunch and tasted stale. I think that this location is no longer owned by the original owners and my have changed hands in early 2017 when I started to notice the change in quality. Time to find replacement. read more

Great food and the lunch rates are a steal! You can get out of there with tax and leaving a reasonable tip for less than $10 for a very tasty and big meal. The food is excellent & the service is very good. I'd say that this is the best place for Chinese in the N burbs even. Don't be afraid to ask for a little extra spice if you like it that way as well. I like the Cashew Shrimp the best personally, good flavor, a bit of kick & they don't skimp on the shrimp which are large for Chinese places. Not sure why some say it's empty, I see a crowd a lot when I go in during the "normal hours" though I like to go in about 1:30 after the lunch rush while still eating off the lunch menu! read more

I was a long time fan of Yen Yen, up until, a couple of years back, when the quality of the food wasn't there anymore. A friend told me, today, the restaurant went through a change of management (maybe ownership) 12-18mos. ago. I returned tonight to find our dinner, egg rolls, and staff was as good as it gets! Normally I wouldn't give this place five stars, but I have tried lunch takeout at every Chinese restaurant within a ten minute drive of my work in Buffalo Grove, and this is the only place I've found acceptable. I've been eating at Yen Yen's for about 7 years. Unfortunately over that span of time, quality has dropped consistently as the price went up, most notably in the last year. I do take out 100 per cent of the time because I don't have enough time to do a sit down. Just as well, the restaurant doesn't look too inviting. The last straw was a meal last week that was supposed to be Kung Pao Shrimp. It tasted and looked like they scraped if off the bottom of the wok. Little bits of black charred something throughout. Many of the vegies had burn marks on them. The shrimp also had a burned flavor. The gravy was like a goopy paste like consistency that was not any better. Overall, I'm embarrassed to say that I ate the whole meal. And what's with the rice? They give you a container that is barely enough for one serving. If you want more, they charge you $1.50 for a pint! Really? I bet if I had a meal in the dining room, and I asked for more rice, they would bring me another bowl at no cost. So why so stingy on something they probably buy in 100LB bags ???? What does a pint of rice cost them, $0.10? Wake up and take care of your customers. Never again. I've had a few off meals here and there, but this one will be my last at Yen Yen's. I'll be spending my money somewhere else. read more

We had a late round of golf at Arboretum across the street and we were all starving so we all just decided to try this place out. Not a good idea. I asked their wait staff what is good, she opens the menu and says "get the meal for four" or "any of the chef specialities" and leaves. Not very friendly but I brushed it off. So we order the pre-fix meal. Wonton soup was ok, spring rolls was chewy, ribs were hard, some beef dish and sweet and sour chicken were bland. I tried to add flavor with duck sauce and soy sauce to no avail. Fried rice was the best one of the bunch and it was not one of the good fried rice I have eaten. We had to ask to refill our water and tea lot several times. The Asian male waiter did not smile once, no thank you for coming when giving us the bill. The only thing he said to us the whole time we were there was "this is a lot of food" when he brought us out food. I don't mind paying for good food but I basically paid $26 for something I did not enjoy along with terrible service. I did give them a star for a clean bathroom and another star for entertaining us with the Chinese horoscope place mats. read more

I was a frequent dinner over the years. But recently received an order with no rice. I called and asked for the rice to be delivered. I was told "no". Things were too busy for delivery. The person on the phone offered five dollars towards next visit. His rationale was the rice was only 20% of the order! at most. I tried to explain that Chinese food without rice was like shrimp and lobster sauce without the shrimp. It doesn't matter the percentage. The rice is integral. I was very disappointed by the service and response I received. I was told if I cared that much I would return to get the rice. I could not and should not have to do so. read more

Hmmm ... standard/boring. Everything was better before the downturn in the economy. Now - dishes are noticeably smaller (prices are up slightly) and nothing is quite as good as it once was. A couple of weeks ago I ordered the BBQ pork chow fun. Something about it was "weird" -- I think they used beef instead of pork. I asked the owner Joanne to take a look and she said different chef at 22 than Arlington Hts Road (which is where we normally go). What. Ever. I wasn't happy. Hubby has been eating there for 30 years. He's not a foodie but even he was disappointed in his beef chop suey last night. If there was someplace better to go I would be out of Yen Yen in a heartbeat but ... the husband loves this place. Oh, well. If you want to spend too much and get a lousy meal, Yen Yen is now the place to go. We used to order from them quite frequently but we stopped because they kept getting our order wrong. Thought we would try it again last night. Prices have skyrocketed and every traditional chinese vegetable seemed to come as an extra cost, very strange. The food was really bad. Way too much salt and MSG. Looked in our take out bag for some condiments and only found 2 tubes of soy. Sorry Yen Yen, you seem to be all about the money and not the food or customer service. More like Yuk Yuk. There was food debris on our table when we arrived. They do provide speedy service, literally 3 minutes to get our food. It tasted like it too.
