Yang Chow is a classic old school Chinese-American family-owned restaurant that opened in 1977 in Chinatown. You can still feel the 70's and 80's vibe when you enter the restaurant with its dark red stained carpeting, bright red paper lanterns overhead, and the walls adorned with framed pictures of presumably the manager and past celebrities who have eaten at Yang Chow. The real draw for Yang Chow is their signature Slippery Shrimp. The shrimp is deep-fried to perfection and tossed in secret garlic, ginger, cayenne, and ketchup sauce. The result is something unique that is crispy and quite tasty. The menu is very Chinese-American as it doesn't offer the more popular rice noodles (chow fun) or pan fried noodles (Hong Kong style chow mein). We ended up ordering their chicken lo mein which is the only version of chow mein they serve, and the fish fillet in garlic sauce. Both were very flavorful and not at all oily. Yang Chow also has a full bar and their cocktails were surprisingly very good with the perfect alcohol to mix ratio. Service was attentive, welcoming and very friendly. Panda Express may have their orange chicken, but Yang Chow certainly wins with their slippery shrimp and is definitely worth the visit! read more

I hadn't been to Yang Chow in many years. Went on Saturday afternoon about 2:00. There was a short wait but happy they had tables and chairs outside. So glad we went. The food is perfect mid-twentieth century Chinese-American. The slippery shrimp is iconic for a reason: perfectly cooked, lightly crunchy, a little sweet and a little spicy, moderate in each dimension and the overall result is superb. There's a reason that nearly every table orders it! The hot and sour soup, a favorite from the 1970's, was perfectly done. Just thick enough, just a tad of vinegar and a bit of chile. Beautiful variety of ingredients: firm tofu, super tender slice beef, tiny ribbons of shiitake mushrooms, and egg drop. My only regret is that couldn't also try the sizzling rice soup. Beyond the food, the service was top rate, especially for such a busy place. Courteous and unhurried staff. The waiter ladled the soup into our bowls and they allowed enough time for us to enjoy the hot soup before bringing our other dishes. When we were finished, we lingered and nibbled at the remaining food and enjoyed the end of our cocktails. (Try the lychee martini!) No rush to give us our check and when we asked for food to go, they took the plates to the kitchen and returned with a bag of leftovers. Old school and welcome. I should mention that the portions are ample and the leftovers were easily another meal for us. Not the latest new thing, nor the regional specialties straight from China. But perfectly done Chinese-American with outstanding service. read more

Yang Chow is the best Chinese restaurant in Chinatown! Celebrities agree based on their pictures on the wall, that this is authentic Chinese food in Los Angeles at its finest. Our server, Beni, was outstanding with his service, humor, and friendly manner; excellent presentation with the food and prompt delivery to our table. We were seated less than 20 minutes wait on a Saturday afternoon on 4/5/2025, and were placed at a table near the kitchen. We were given water right away along with a server ready to take our order. We ordered from Yang Chow's specialties which was the #213 and #250, chicken lo mein, steamed flounder, and white rice. The sizzling beef and scallops was hot and flavorful. The lo mein had breaded chicken and was a great fried texture to compliment the soft noodles. Everything was very tasty, not too salty, and we even tried the chili oil which at just a dash was very spicy and definitely kicked it up a notch. The photos on the wall of celebrities both past and present were very fun and encouraging to see, knowing that they chose Yang Chow as their Chinese food establishment. There was parking available in the back for free with validation from the restaurant, which we did not know and actually parked across the street by Bank of America for $7. Next time we come here, we know to park in the back and park for free which is a rarity in LA. Also, don't forget your fortune cookies, you can ask for more, don't be shy, they have plenty as well as plenty of water. So if you want Chinese chow then go to Yang Chow in LA's Chinatown and chow down! read more

We always get their kungpao chicken and slippery shrimp. They are great. Today, we decided to try wonton soup and their house special chicken, both were horrible. The house special chicken was super salty and oily. There were some julienne pieces of snow peas and carrots only for decorations. It was simply overcooked chicken breast strips coated in too much salty sauce with no aroma or taste. The wonton soup was even more depressing, it was supposed to be shrimp wonton soup but there were 2 pieces of frozen chicken wrapped in wonton wrappers in a bowl of water. The broth had no flavor, it also had bamboo shoots and canned mushrooms. Everything about it was just awful. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner and had such a nice time. We ordered slippery shrimp, orange chicken, shrimp fried rice, and lo mein noodles. All were very tasty and there was enough for all of us. Place was on the small side but cozy and the workers there were polite and helpful with any questions we had. Overall it was a fun time and our belly's were happy. Happy Birthday to me! read more

oh i had no idea i had been here before but i saw my prior review said i had. i also said there i would come back and i guess i did tho it was 11 years later! but i am never in this part of town and i guess this proves it! had family from san diego and abroad visiting and staying at a union station hotel nearby in advance of a big northwest train trip. a 9-year old pleaded for chinese food and his dad searched and said hmm this is one of the best reviewed places in the area so here we came. group of 8. they have big tables where we fit quickly and easily at 8pm on a friday night! its hard ordering for families and picky kids including some vegetarians but we ordered 7 various dishes with a little of everything and it was all so. good. one fam member - an american in japan - said wow chinese food is expensive! i guess its less in japan. but he also said whatever he's had there isn't so good so... he was also happy to try it here. (actually as i check the menu prices... it IS expensive! it's good. but pricey. didn't realize how much it was! like beef and broccoli at $19.50?!) everyone... a wildly varied group... loved everything. all that was left was two very tiny take out boxes of beef and broccoli, and the famed shrimp. i could have eaten it there but summer body here i come. i hope. idk why i rated this 4 stars last time. i mean it's a typical, traditional, well worn, and clearly neighborhood fave chinese joint with very good food. a clearly happy clientele all over. and again it was delicious. service also very fast cordial constant brusque in the busy chinese-food-restaurant way but i think it had to be the manager who very nicely came over a few times to make sure all was good. i recommended this place before, and am doing so again! I came here because of the TikTok review I saw claiming this place is the "Best Chinese spot in LA" it's not the best but it's also not the worst. First of all it should be a crime to serve white fried rice. Like cmon is it that hard to add a little bit of oyster or soy sauce? Same w the noodles major lack of flavor. Their orange chicken was pretty good. This is the first place I've encountered that doesn't give complementary rice with their orange chicken. $61 yikes next time I'll save my money for Thai food atleast that's worth the expense read more

I'm picky about Chinese American food and nothing here disappointed me flavor or quality wise. They accommodated my family of 16 as best as they could in the small, cozy place. My Long Island iced tea hit the spot. From the shrimp toast, to the slippery shrimp, to the vegan dishes, all good textures and flavors. This place is incredible! By far the best Chinese food I've ever had! The wait was quite a bit on an early Sunday. We sat down about 25 mins after getting on the wait list. Ordered about 5 different things on the menu. Each dish was so authentic and perfect. The service is very fast, many different waiters with incredible service. Price is good too. Not crazy expensive. Many menu options. Parking was a little hard to find though. This place is amazing! read more

A solid place to eat Chinese food in Chinatown. It has been around for years and is always pretty crowded. I wouldn't say it is the best chinese food but it hits the spot and portions are very large, so you get a lot of bang for your buck! Like everyone we ordered their famous slippery shrimp. I don't normally like breaded shrimp but there is def something addicting about these. The steam fish filet is also very good and one of the healthier dishes. Surprisingly you won't see many Asian people eating here which is usually a red flag that the food isn't good but i'd say give it a try if you happen to be in Chinatown. read more

Best Chinese food in Chinatown. Valet parking available in the back lot. Otherwise there's street parking around the block. The walls are full of pictures of celebrities that ate at the restaurant. Great place for a date or a family night out. I recommend the slippery shrimp and their Yang Chow fried rice. You can't go wrong with the other dishes though. Service was great. Since we were nearby, wanted to try an "old timey" Chinese Restaurant that's been around forever. Parked in the mini-lot behind the restaurant (10-12 cars). Weekends would be another story though, probably street parking or nearby lot(?). Had that vintage vibe. Booth upholstery was new though. Nothing like lunch out with a fellow foodie! The place was crowded at Friday lunch. We ordered: Sizzling plate scallops. Sauce poured table side. Slightly sweet with a bit of a kick (we are medium spice tolerant). Nice juicy scallops. A winner. Had to order since my husband dislikes scallops. The dry sautéed vegetable delight (green beans & asparagus) was also VERY good. Blistered skin from flash frying. Mild shoyu & black beans sauce. The asparagus butts could have been sliced off further up the stalk though. Would order again. Hunan beef was a first for both of us. Tender flavorful beef slices sautéed with red chili (moderate heat). Also VERY good. The sautéed rice cake (I.e. mochi) with shredded pork was good as well! Mochi ovals sautéed with cabbage a julienne pork. Yumm... Waitstaff with ordering, plate take away, hot tea & water service was GREAT. Ok, we've all been to Chinese restaurants where you had to REPEATEDLY request water, tea or what have you. The guy stationed in our section was GREAT! Will definitely return. Maybe even make a trip up to Chinatown for their food! read more

Right in the middle of Chinatown, there's this little restaurant that always has a waitlist well my friends definitely worth waiting for the food comes out quick. The Service checks on you frequently not only that but this is still one of those establishments where the manager will come out and make sure that you're well taken care of at least that's what happened on our visit. read more

We came here after my sons bautizo in the Placita Olvera and we loved it. We did call ahead because we were a large group, not sure if it is required. When we were done there was a lot of people waiting!! We ordered a lot of food, different entires, appetizers and drinks and everything was served in a timely manner, hot and delicious! Having just come back from China we ended up at this place which was in LAs Chinatown. It is a very hyped restaurant with long lines when in the late afternoon when we went around 3pm. The wait wasn't too bad. Ambiance is nothing special, though it is clean and lot of pictures on the walls with various locals/celebrities, and very dated interior. You do get a very nice service vibe too. The portions are pretty standard Chinese American food and served very large family style. Tried the sizzling and rice soup which was good, kung pao chicken, slippery shrimp. Somewhat heavy overall. We had about 2 days of leftovers for 2 people at the end. read more

The food is good for chop suey/family style. Try cool history and so many. Celebrities visited there and took photos either the staff and owners. A little bit crammed when it's busy. They are ok I expected better I asked for the chicken soup with the crunchy rice and that was white meat and it was yummy. So was of to good start I ordered "orange chicken" w " white meat " and unfortunately the chicken was extremely stringy inedible honestly but I was too tired and hungry to deal with returning the dish so I ate a little bit and left the rest. Not cheap I paid almost $45 for soup one dish and rice was a extra fee , doesn't come with the meal like typical Chinese restaurants + tipping valet another fee, because parking is difficult elsewhere and the area is a little sketchy especially in evening so I didn't feel safe parking far but I was alone. So it wasn't cheap Big portions Service is efficient and attentive The ambiance is authentic and fun but unfortunately because I asked a "table for one" they sat me in the little corner by the door which feels gloomy and isolated, don't sit there! If you go unless you want to ‍ I don't think I would go again Hopefully I will find an authentic Chinese restaurant with better quality food read more

I've been going to this place for years. When I worked downtown I would go for lunch. They're famous for the slippery shrimp but overall their food is really good. Customer service is average and the staff is nice. Once you place your order, the food comes out pretty fast. Parking is available on the street and they do have a parking lot in the back. It's a pretty popular place. It stays crowded especially with downtown workers like attorneys, County and city employees. For the weekend you should go online for reservations especially if its a large party. It's a large location and it gets packed. There is also outdoor tables. Great downtown chinese foods and they have two other locations. read more

The only reservations they take is at the door. We had to wait 30 minutes to get in. Well worth the wait.

The server came by quickly and dropped off the check as she saw that I was nearly finished with my meal. PARKING Parked at Joe's Autoparks. It was $15! I did not know until after I paid the ticket. Very difficult to find parking in this area, so not many options unless you want to walk really far, back to your car in 90 degree heat. Hangari Kalguksu is doing really well for themselves! It is good to see. There have been so many changes, but I am not a fan of the changes. What was once meticulously fresh prepared side dishes are now generic looking out of a jar side dishes. They have started to feature more things and have expanded their menu, as well as expanded their shop so that it is much bigger. Still packed! Parking is still valet and a hassle. The waiters and waitresses now speak perfect english, which was nice. Kalguksu is still very good. Overall, it feels more commercial than homely now. As a commercial restaurant, it is good. However, not a place I would travel for anymore. I can get this experience from most local spots. I am keeping this review at a 5 star, because it still is worthy of a 5 star. I'm completely baffled by all of the rave reviews! I love me some good Chinese food and was hoping, based on so many good reviews, that this place would be all it was cracked up to be. We were passing through Downtown LA and decided to do a quick search for the top local Chinese restaurants and this popped up on our phones, so we made a quick exit and gave it a try. When we arrived, there were a number of Asian people standing around outside, so we thought it would be a bit of a wait, and were prepared to move on else wear, do to limited time, but we actually got seated right away, although stuffed way in the back in front of an emergency exit. Needless to say, we were so excited to get in so quickly! After we were seated, I realized that there were zero Asians eating there! Not a single one! The only Asians were the employees. I had a bad feeling once I realized this, as it is a golden rule of mine to only eat ethnic food where the natives of culture/nationality eat. The food took forever to come out. The people next to us were there long before were even complaining about the wait and long waits in between dishes. We actually canceled the beef Scheszwan we ordered, as we were already finished with our other two dishes before it was even close to being served. Turns out, this huge restaurant only had two burners! Say what!? Asian food needs many high-range burners. Asians don't bake their stuff! They fry the heck out of things! Anyhow, We tried spicy garlic scallops which were perfectly cooked, as in they were not rubbery, but they were so bland. I could barely detect garlic and it was not spicy in the least bit. We also tried the twice cooked pork. It was just ok. Not much flavor and was something I could have easily whipped up at home in my sleep. I had to douse my food with soy sauce to give some flavor. Both had "red stars" next to them to indicate those were favorites. So glad I didn't order anything without a star! Such a huge dissapointment for the $16+ price tag per dish and the $5 parking we had to pay for. So bummed out. The following needs to be noted: 1. This is Americanized Chinese Food. 2. I lived in Hong Kong and China for about 6 years (for work), so I know from real/authentic Chinese food. I've had the super fresh fish with the eye staring up at you, that eye which was just minutes before happily viewing you from the inside a grimy fish tank. I've pulled the heads off of fresh shrimp, with the brains and eyeballs squirting out. 3. I'm a big fan of ALL Asian cuisine (except for real/authentic Chinese food). I love this place. It is consistent and fresh and yummy. What I really love about this place is the wide variety of yummy greasy food - slippery shrimp (yes, they are heaven on earth, the Krispy Kreme of Chinese food), Kung Pao Chicken and Dumplings (close to the dim sum variety, but a little more on the crispy side) and an ice cold Tsing Dao. What more do you want or need in a "Chinese" restaurant? I give it only 4.5 stars because I am a fan of flat Chow Fun (they don't have flat noodles here) and the wine list is not great. But as I mentioned the beer is cold! I have been going to this place for years, it is the ultimate hang out on Christmas eve for all us Jews (my peeps were out in full force last night, and that is one of the beautiful things about living in LA). Excellent food and service. There are two locations of this establishment, one in Chinatown at Broadway and this one in Pasadena. I have visited both locations and the service and quality are the same: excellent. Each has a display of the many celebrities that have enjoyed a meal here - Dr Drew, Magic Johnson LL Cool J, Drew Barrymore, Live Schreiber to name a few. This is a very cozy casual no frills place with good variety. Very welcoming servers, they treat everyone like a part of their family. Excellent place for groups, family dinners or just lunch or dinner for 2. You can enjoy a cocktail with your meal. Food is fresh, service quick and you will leave satisfied! This place is amazing! Just slipped in while walking around Chinatown, checked the best reviewed Chinese food place near where I was with my dad, and we went in and were promptly seated/helped. We ordered a couple dishes which were delicious and different. For instance, who has heard of slippery shrimp before?? Well, I asked what it was, AFTER my meal was over, and the waiter explained then asked if I would like a free sample. That's awesome service, above and beyond I think, especially because we had already paid. Anyway, the food was awesome, try the slippery shrimp, and enjoy the hot tea. Make sure you come hungry, though, because as typical Chinese food fare goes, the portions are enormous and you will have to take a doggy bag home. Food was absolutely delicious. This was my second time here. Ordered the slippery shrimp -- crispy fried shrimp in a sweet, tangy sauce. One of the most popular dishes here, according to our waiter. We got two individual side orders of rice. Just one entree, and 2 individuals orders of rice for Me and my GF. Couldn't finish it. In other words, their portions are VERY generous. Better than all other Chineese places I have been to. Slippery Shrimp is to die for. I hate that there is not one in San Diego. My sister loves the green beans - which a lot of places do not have. We also had pan-fried noodles with shrimp (yum yum, the sauce and infused oils in these noodles is delicious, plus the smoky flavor of the crisper - aka a little burned - noodles makes me lick my lips.) A friend of ours ordered the moo shu chicken. I looked great and said that it has the perfect blend of plummy sauce, thin pancake, and savory moo shu. We shared some sizzling rice soup - this soup is sooooo good. I happen to love rice that is crisp (like a grilled rice ball or the singed rice in the bowl of bi bim bop) and this soup combines a flavorful chicken broth with bamboo shoots, chicken, shrimp, and the earthy smoky flavor of charred rice! The windows are blacked out and it seems sketch outside. But going in the place decked out and classic Chinese restaurant decor and images of famous celebrities. I got to try the slippery shrimp, the minced beef green beans, the rice paper soup, the soup dumplings, chicken crispy noodles, and another kungpao chicken dish I believe. A ton of food! Got all the Yelp favorites. The slippery shrimp was pretty good. Lived up to expectations. Sauce is thick and slimey. The green beans were fantastic. One of my favorites from the meal. The soup was fantastic! A must try. The mix of fried rice paper and hot soup just mixes well for some reason. Absolutely a must try. Everything else was fairly standard. I finally made it to Yang Chow for a Saturday lunch, and I can happily say--it completely lives up to the hype! We were lucky to get seated pretty quickly, but right after we sat down, I noticed a waiting list starting to grow. This place definitely gets busy, and now I totally understand why. We started with the sizzling rice soup, which was such a fun and delicious surprise. The crispy rice added this unique, crunchy texture that I've never had in soup before. It was even better after adding a little chili oil for some extra heat--so good! Of course, we had to try their famous slippery shrimp, and honestly, it was incredible. I get why people rave about it--it's hard to describe, but it's like the ultimate version of American Chinese food done perfectly. I actually checked YELP to see what would be a good place to eat. After checking the reviews on Yelp we decided to try Yang Chow. The restaurant was quite full and paired with the awesome yelp profile (400+ reviews and a strong 4 stars) I had my sights set pretty high. We shared the wonton soup really good. Pan fried noodles with chicken. Noodles were too mushy for my taste. They put way too much sauce on it. Spicy beef. The sauce on the spicy beef was great. the beef quality was not so good. oh and white tea. That was wonderful. When the tea and the soup steal the show, its a bad sign. Yang chow is a-ok chinese food. I dont think I'll return, but its fine for what its worth. Very touristy crowd. I was in the neighborhood and had a serious craving for Chinese food, so I decided to check out Yang Chow. The place was definitely busy when I arrived, but the wait wasn't bad at all - maybe 20 minutes. Once we were seated, the service was impressively quick and everything came out hot and fresh. We started with the fried wontons, and wow - they were perfectly crispy and light, not greasy at all. Such a good way to kick off the meal! For mains, we ordered the orange chicken, slippery shrimp, and kung pao chicken. Honestly, all three were delicious. Each dish had its own bold flavor and was cooked just right - crispy where it should be, saucy where it should be, and never too salty or oily. But the real standout for me was the hot and sour soup. I have been to Yang Chow in the Valley numerous times. Last night was the first time I dropped by Yang Chow Chinatown.. Usually we start with the Shrimp Toast and Pan Fried Dumplings. Both were just so so. The Toast was just soggy and the Dumplings were overfried--just too bad. I thought that the main courses would be a little better but noooo, I was wrong again. Fish Fillet with Spicy Garlic had what seemed like a lot of vinegar. The flavor usually is a little sweet and spicy but I can't say what happened here. The House Special Shredded Beef usually has shredded mushrooms, beef, snow peas and carrots. How it came out tasted liked a cooked mess. Thank goodness the other main dishes were OK. I really felt sorry for the server as it seemed he had no idea what was going on or what to do to make it taste better. The Moo Shu Pork was really good as was the Diced Chicken with Cashew Nuts. The take home lesson for me was not to try the exotic or unusual dishes at places that I have never tried before. read more

Used to go to Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles' Chinatown every time I had lunch with a Superior Court or Federal Judge--they chose and we were treated very very well. This was YEARS ago, when women were a novelty as civil litigators and bored judges liked a quick lunch with a perky chatterbox---their treat. Seems that was ruled unethical long ago/as were such lunches. Today it was a family of five affair, with relatively well behaved kids and classic basic foods to please the child pallet. But Beef/Broccoli Sauce and Chow Main with Spicey Green Beans was just the trick and everything was terrific. If only we hadn't looked at the photographs on the wall. No Judges. . . BUT. . .all the USC athletes and boosters. . .given the cost of a USC Education and the extra money to get rich kids accepted, you may not be able to afford to eat at Yang Chow. . . We have been going to yang chow for many years but no more. The rudest hostess! She is a piece of work! We waited and waited for our table inside the restaurant 2 feet from the hostess the whole time, for almost an hour. And when I asked her when we would get our table, she tells me she sent me a text 9 minutes ago. She wanted me to get back at the bottom of the waiting list! She told me she saw me the whole time waiting in front of her. When I asked her why she didn't call my name she said "I sent you a text"! She knew it was me in front of her the whole time and yet she didn't tell me. The text simply said head to the restaurant if you haven't already because you are close to the top of the list. We left because it was not worth it! We had always put up with her rudeness but this was not worth it. We will never go back! If I could give a zero star I would. There are a lot of legit Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, including Yang Chow - but why don't any of them deliver? I don't get it! BUT thankfully we live in 2015 - which means smartphone - few taps - Chinese food at your door. Most of the time, I use RushOrder app (try promo code HUNGRY3 not sure if its still valid tho) because I don't know any other apps that have Yang Chow. ANYWAY, on to the food: Sizzling Rice Soup is good if you're looking for some soup on a gloomy day. Usually I go with the kung pao chicken, orange chicken, and Spicy Hunan Beef (when i order with my friends). The sliced beef with snow peas is also good, i like their sauce. Crisp duck + any of the fried rice is also a very good combination. To be honest, I think I liked everything that I've tried at this restaurant and is consistently on top of my list when I try to get some Chinese food delivered (especially for Sunday Night Football nowadays) read more

From the outside you might not want to walk in, but get in the doors and you have that classic Chinese restaurant feel with good decor and better food. Top it off with a server you can't really understand until you give your brain a chance to fill in the blanks of the riddle your lip reading and ears audibly attempted to translate on first go. We ended up splitting the Szechwaun (sp?) chicken, Beef with Scallions, and some egg rolls. We did not end up getting their house specialty - Slippery Shrimp - as friends I were with did not want Shrimp, and this is certainly reason to come back alone. Questions and answers: Would I come back? Absolutely. Was it great? Without a doubt. Did I get a great fortune in my cookie at the end of my meal? It is decidedly so.
