There was a tall, skinny male who approached us with our bill after we finished our dinner. Similar to previous reviews, he had asked us about the tip being "little" and in a tone as if this was a mistake and if we were satisfied with the service? I had responded "No" and that it is exactly what I tipped. He walked away and seem unsatisfied. Now, I'm a pregnant woman trying to enjoy her dessert after dinner but after his approach with his attitude , I had lost appetite and we left. Note to the staff: tips are complimentary. New Szechuan restaurant in town! I believe this used to be a hotpot place, but it's been newly remodeled to half a Szechuan restaurant, and the other half, Chinese BBQ restaurant. I don't think I'm one to tolerate Mala spice that well, but surprisingly Yao Yao was pretty tasty and tolerable! Yao Yao is located right at Greenhouse Plaza, so there's plenty of parking available, but you just have to look for it as it's usually kinda packed due to all the other stores and restaurants around, especially around peak hours. My party of 4 arrived around 12:45ish and there wasn't much of a wait. This interior is nicely decorated with a Tiffany blue and white themed color, with bears all around. Interesting choice of design. It's not bad, kinda it's cute and unique. Even their plates and cups are matching. The meal ordering can be done via scanning a QR code, or through the tablet that they provide. For our table, we ended up getting their Signature Suan Cai Yu And Spicy Beef (half and half), Pig Ear with Chili, Sauteed Shredded Cabbage, and Chengdu Hot Sour Noodles. Doesn't sound like a lot, but this was more than enough with leftovers at the end! Even for hungry hikers! We also ended up sharing two desserts - their Chengdu Ice Jelly, and Red bean Oolong Jelly. I have had Szechuan food occasionally, but so rarely, I wasn't sure what to expect, but here are my thoughts about each dish: - Suan Cai Yu And Spicy Beef - Intimidating at first glance because of all the spice, oil, and peppercorn, but this was not too spicy actually. I liked the fish more than I liked the beef, but both protein were tender! I enjoyed the fish more because it was soft and falls apart super easily. It came with some lotus roots, wood ear mushrooms, and some glass noodles. The beef side came with bean sprouts. It might have came with other stuff too, but I wasn't too sure. If I come again next time I'd opt for just the Fish Fillet instead of splitting two sides! Definitely recommend as this is a signature dish of Yao Yao's. For this particular one we got, I'd give it a 8/10. - Pig Ear with Chili - 10/10 would recommend. Might be biased, but I kinda love the texture of pig ears. It's chewy, gelatinous, and just a really delicious occasion treat for me because I don't get this often! They mixed this with some cucumber and cilantro, so it was a nice refreshing mix to the overall dish, and if you're looking for a break from the spicy stuff, try this out! - Sauteed Shredded Cabbage - 6/10, I thought portion size could be bigger for the price point, and I thought it was missing that stir fry aroma (wok hei)/flavor to the dish. It was still good though and another nice spice break. - Chengdu Hot Sour Noodles (no photo) - 6/10. I liked the noodles they used for the dish, but I don't know if it's because I tried the signature Suan Cai Yu first, but the flavor is pretty much the same (or maybe my tastebuds were numb from the Suan Cai Yu?) I believe they used the same noodles as they did in the Suan Cai Yu as well. I feel like the only thing that wasn't there were the peanuts.. So if I were to pick between the two, I'd recommend their Signature Suan Cai Yu over the Hot Sour Noodles. I didn't taste any sourness to it... - Last, but not least, the Chengdu Ice Jelly, and Red Bean Oolong Jelly! Note, these are desserts and not drinks!! It is found under the drink section of the menu, but it's a dessert. 11/10 would recommend these! I opted for the Red Bean Oolong Jelly over the Chengdu Ice Jelly because I don't like raisins. However, if it is your first time trying and you like more variety, go for the Chengdu Ice Jelly. This is kinda similar to Grass Jelly, but these jelly are smoother in texture. Each of these come with a small container of what I think might be sweetened condensed milk? Or some kind of milk, not totally sure. I'd actually really recommend this if you need to cool off from all the spice and heat from the main dishes. It's mildly sweet and refreshing. My Red Bean Oolong Jelly came with plenty of red beans and some roasted peanuts, so a lot of textures going on. It's big enough to split between 2-3 people too. Personally, I wouldn't mind coming here just for this dessert as a midday snack or late night snack. Especially over the summer? Heck yeah! Service wasn't bad either. The servers come and go really quickly, but they get what you need fast too, haha! read more

Noise so bad this place should be a health hazard. The laundromat 2 stores down is actually quieter which says something. Jin GeGe and Yao Yao technically share a space separated by a wall. You can still walk through inside, so really not two stores. Take out folks were super not helpful with answering questions, they didn't want to help. Too bad the food is actually good. This place shares the same menu and staff/owner with Jin Gege. Food is pretty okay. Remember to arrive and place your order at least an hour before closing. Make sure to leave a FAT tip for their careless service because they will come after you. We arrived at around 6:50pm the other day and were seated quickly. We went placed our order around 7. We ordered their specialty fish with rice noodles add-on and a clay pot rice. We didn't receive the fish until 7:40. They didn't bring us our rice noodles so we had to ask for it, two times. Our clay pot came shortly after. At 8pm, they "politely" came to us with the check and told us they are about to close. We had just started on our food. During the time we were waiting for the food, no one came up to us to check on us or ask if we needed refills on tea or anything. They didn't even take our order by hand; we placed it on an iPad. So we left them a couple dollars tip. When we left, the tall skinny male waitress ran out after us asking why we left such a small tip (his original words were: "Why is the tip so little? You didn't like our service?" in a very sassy tone) Well well well. I hope the staff understands tips are only complimentary and given with satisfactory service. Had a combo of Yao Yao's fish dish alongside the Chinese BBQ from Jin Ge GE. We ordered the pickled veggie fish tomato dish ($42) with two orders of rice noodles ($4), the half order of roast duck and char siu (bbq pork) ($24), pea sprouts ($17) and two bowls of steamed rice ($3) Overall good value. For five adults and a kid, it was $100 bucks out there door (gratiuity is incljuded). Kid loved the char siu bbq pork, and the more elderly Chinese parents loved the noodle + preerved veggie / fish / tomato dish so everyone was happy. The preserved veggie / fish dish was enormous with two sides like a hot pot, one with tomato broth and another with spicy broth. Lack of depth in flavor but hit the spot for a savory warm meal. The rice noodles were ho fun (wide rice noodles) and the perfect fit. Given it's a large clean restaurant with decent food and prices good for sharing large meals, I'd go back again! read more

Yao Yao left a positive first experience. The chili sauce was memorable and so was the congee. This is a top of San Leandro spot. All the deli selections and pickled signature dishes stand out! We originally planned to get dim sum at a different restaurant nearby, but the line was ridiculously long. I'm glad we decided to check out YaoYao. The place was busy too, but we were seated right away. There's a cute robot with cat ears delivering food, which was a huge hit with the kids. We ordered many dishes. All of them were good. But we only had $7 cash for the tip, so we told the waiter that's all we have (I didn't want to put tips on my credit card). I told the waiter sorry, if I had more cash, I would give it to him. Initially I felt $42.99 for a dish ( combo of fish and beef) is definitely on the pricey side, but I see the sizes I realized it is not bad at all, and they taste very authentic, and portions are big. They have different vegetables on each side, beef with bean sprouts, fish with lotus root, wood ear, and potato clear noodles, perfectly balanced. The waitress is very courteous and sincere which is very rare now a days. Don't know when they open this restaurant, but inside is very modern and clean.
