Definitely my go to for traditional Taiwanese breakfast. I usually get the savory rice ball with all 3 add ons (sausage, pickled radish, and egg). One order is pretty big. So I usually share it or save it for a second meal later. The egg omelet and daikon cakes are really good too. And if you like, you can add eggs to the daikon cake. I also really like the variety of Taiwanese breakfast drinks (ie. Hot soy milk (unsweetened), cold soy milk, hot peanut milk, and cold peanut milk). They have other beverages too but these are just go to! The restaurant itself of pretty big so there's plenty of seating for dining in. There's also a few tables outside too and it's especially nice if you have a pet and full wants to eat there. First time coming here and will be the last. I was completely put off by the lady cashier telling me to NOT forget to tip after a meal. This wasn't a friendly encounter but more of a demand, insisting customers MUST tip regardless of service. I thought it was rude! I still left a tip, as a sign of good gesture on my part, but left me not wanting to come back due to their demands and lack of understanding regarding discretionary tipping protocol. I was in the Chino Hills neighborhood. Yi Mei caught my eye. I dropped in as I was curious what it sells. Plenty of parking right up front. Good interior dining space. A couple patio tables outside. They are a classic food spot serving up traditional Taiwanese breakfast. Hot and cold foods, variety of snacks, and a good selection of drinks are offered. They even sell frozen dumplings and more. I first ordered a few items and paid for them at the counter. Btw, $20 minimum for credit/debit card use. Otherwise, cash only. I then sat at an open table to wait for my order. Wait time wasn't too long. The nice lady who took my order brought me my food when it was ready. Thank you Miss! + Almond Pastry, Pineapple Cake, Red Bean Pastry + Salty Rice Roll with Purple Rice, Daikon Cake with Egg + Large Soy Milk Cold + Sesame Balls I enjoyed the daikon cake with egg very much. Perfectly pan fried with a golden crispy outer crust and a pillowy soft interior. YUM! Please note the egg costs $1.75 extra. Soy milk was light and not too sweet. Salty rice roll was huge. It had lots of pork sung inside, but I'm not sure if the Chinese donut worked though. Purple rice was moist and chewy with a slightly sticky texture plus distinctly nutty and natural sweetness. I rather have more purple rice than pork sung. Sesame ball exterior was bouncy and soft... it needed a bit more red bean filling though. As for the pastries, they were a bit dry unfortunately. Before leaving, I got 3 more sesame balls because they were that good. A different lady helped me this time. I paid cash. She had the audacity to short change me by $0.91. At the time, I didn't check my change until I got to my car. I didn't bother to go back in because I was short on time. It's not about the money. It's the principle. I don't appreciate dishonesty at all. When you do business, do it with integrity always. Funny thing is that I had already put money in their tip jar before getting my food earlier. This location has plenty of indoor seating, and I noticed a few picnic tables outside as well. We didn't come during breakfast, so it was relatively quiet when we stopped by. We ordered the fan tuan with white rice, XLBs, radish cake, rolled omelet, and pork chop plate. Some dishes were better than others. My fan tuan was a bit dry, and like another Yelper mentioned, they also offer it with purple rice -- I didn't realize that was an option, so maybe I'll try that next time. The XLBs were okay, while the radish cake and rolled omelet were good, especially with the garlic sauce they provided. Next time, I think the rice plate might be a safer bet since the rice and meat looked fresher and less dry than the fan tuan. This is my first ever visit to Chino Hills location. Yi Mei started with a tiny corner restaurant within HK supermarket in Rowland Heights years ago. They have since expanded to San Gabriel, Chino Hills, Monrovia. Chino Hills location is the newer one with modern decor, clean and seems to offer more items. It offers plenty of seats. Service is friendly, but they are very shorthanded. The kitchen and counter will have to help clean up. It's around 9am, I ordered iced soy milk which is premade, you just grab from refrigerator. It tastes good, but fairly standard. I think hot is the way to go for fresh ones. And for breakfast I picked salty rice ball with pickled vegetable; for $7.50 this is more traditional type. And more expensive. It's wrapped with soft and warm glutinous rice, crispy chinese donuts, pork floss, preserved mustard greens(extra cost), preserved radish. Taste is more savory. They offer and push for purple rice type, I will try it next time. My suggestions are to install order kiosks at all locations. And have help with cleanup and other tasks of location is busy. Had a super craving for a, "Fan Tuan," or Rice Roll and looked up for something reliable that's relatively close by. Glad I found this location and got my Fan Tuan! I got it with the purple rice for a slightly healthier alternative than the standard white rice. The purple rice is 50 cents more, but definitely worth it. The roll itself came with the Chinese Doughnut, Pork Rousung, or dry shredded pork, and the pickled vegetables. The roll was totally delicious and was a great snack to carry around. The regular roll is $6.75 before tax. They have a lot of frozen and refrigerated items, that includes frozen dumplings and chilled soy milk. They also have a lunch menu here of different Taiwanese-style soups and rice plates. Will have to try it next time. They accept cards here with a $20 minimum purchase, or just bring cash. We got the purple veggie rice roll and the green onion pancake (i think they gave us the egg omelet instead; it was delicious regardless). The veggie rice roll came with pickled vegetables, which gave a nice crunch and spicy flavor to the roll, and youtiao (chinese donut). I understand that we got the veggie rice roll, but I do think that it was missing some protein or something. Would love a veggie meat or even just tofu inside, but I still really loved it. The green onion pancake/egg omelet was absolutely divine. It tasted so decadent, and I love how it came with youtiao inside. The server was nice, and answered all our questions. Don't get me wrong I love gluten and bread but this just isn't the type of breakfast I naturally gravitate toward. Overall, everything tasted a bit bland and one-dimensional. I was especially excited to try the rice roll (subbed with purple rice), but I really wish the rice had been softer. The pork floss was the only flavor that really stood out, and unfortunately the rest of the dish felt pretty muted. I also tried the sesame balls and sesame bread, which were decent but nothing particularly memorable. The peanut milk wasn't really for me either it was far too thick and didn't go down very smoothly. Overall, it's not the kind of breakfast I'd personally crave again, but I'm still glad I tried it. I ordered the fan tuan, which was made well, and it can be ordered with white or purple rice. The soy milk was delicious. Great service and a very clean spot. Just a heads up, there is a $20 minimum to use a credit card. I ordered the Fan Tuan (rice roll) and the Taiwanese tamale. I was not the biggest fan of the tamale, but the Fan Tuan was excellent. They'll ask whether you want white or purple rice, and either works. You can also customize what goes inside. It already comes with pork floss, which adds a nice fluffy texture. The rice was cooked perfectly, and the fried bread inside gave it a slight crunch. Wow, I believe this place is under new management. I visited today because my son has been craving Taiwanese sausage rice. There is usually an unpleasant female employee there but today we were met with another female employee, very friendly and hospitable. We dined in and sat at the booth and were brought menus. I looked at the menu and it looked fairly new and prices appeared to have gone down. I was expecting smaller portions but when our food came out, I was delighted to see the generous portions of taiwanese sauce and rice. I also ordered 2 taiwanese sausages on the side and one of their steamed taiwanese tamales with egg. We enjoyed our food and service was great. Food was fresh, tasty , sausages with the perfect sear on the outside and succulent pieces of fat. We were not hassled for a tip and leaving a tip wasn't mentioned at all , just mentioning this because I read other reviews that had a bad experience. Maybe they turned a new leaf? ALSO, the service is abysmal, the ladies at the front waste no time which is good, but that also means that questions or taking time to choose items is rudely frowned upon by the cashiers. It was my second visit here and boy was it DRASTICALLY different! I was unaware that you could customize your rice roll with so many things! You can add in a stewed egg or a scallion egg, you can even add in beef and pickled mustard. Originally when I had the normal rice roll, the portions just didn't fit well, but after adding other items, the rice roll was near perfection!! The only downside is the rice was a bit mushy that day. The wonton noodle soup blew me out the water! I had very mild to low expectations as wonton noodle soup is normally just a comforting soup, but I LOVED the flavors in this one. The noodles were like a combo of udon and ramen texture/taste.
