Instead of loading their drinks with a ton of sweetener or toppings, much like the minimalist vibe of their shop, Yihui Coffee let their ingredients do the talking. We ordered their signature drink Cloudy and a cup of single origin pour over. Cloudy (I ordered less sweet) 11/10 the jujube and cream top added a slight sweetness and creaminess, and the pear jazzed it up with some freshness. Coffee was well balanced. Both times I had the cloudy and also the matcha coconut. If you like a touch of balance between sweet and salty with black coffee, I think the cloudy is a good fit. There is plenty of parking in the back or there is also street parking if you prefer. The place has tables and seating on the right side when you enter through the back, but I've seen the tables filled with people working on their laptop. I'd definitely come back to try their flight, and if I ever need a place to work at, this will be the spot. read more

Even on a day like NYE, Yuhui Coffee was still filled to the brim with people enjoying their drinks to the tunes of light pop on the speakers. I went during the early opening hours and upon walking inside, the staff were already head to toe working through orders while taking new ones. Going through their menu, there was the usual starters people could find on a regular coffee shop but then there were their specialties, one of which was recommended to me being the Cloudy. I was also happy to see that they accepted tap-to-pay since I hadn't seen this option marked as available on Yelp at the time of this review. Walking around this shop, it was incredibly roomy which works to their advantage very well as this building itself was constructed fairly recently. There's a very long seat with ten tables on the side and underneath it being outlets for people to use and I definitely saw a lot of folks taking advantage of this with their laptops. Near the front entrance, there's a few displays showcasing treats that they serve alongside coffee bean bags on shelves in case people want to purchase and brew the same type of coffee as this shop serves themselves. Although parking space in the back is shared with its neighbors being restaurants, this coffee shop is near a residential street so that's also an option for those who are in a hurry. Overall, it was a pleasant experience being able to take a moment to visit Yuhui. As a newcomer, Yuhui has a lot of advantages being a coffee specialty shop but it faces competition with other surrounding businesses that have established customers such as several boba shops nearby and a long favorited donut shop right across the street. Seeing how there's also two elementary-middle schools nearby, I would imagine the younger crowd would gravitate more towards the former and any older generation who's been around this area towards the latter. Nearby on Atlantic as well, there's even more bustling boba and coffee shops popping up and with this location being located on a busy street with roadside medians, people would have to deliberately turn into the neighboring streets or walk their way to get into this space. That being said, I wouldnt cast doubt as Yuhui stands as a perfect in-between for those who want to try something new and support the growing coffee scene in the SGV. read more

Cloudy Latte at Yihui Coffee = My New Obsession So I've been on a little Yihui Coffee kick lately, and their Cloudy Latte (red date, pear & cream) has officially become my favorite drink there. They mix these classic Chinese flavors into modern coffee in a way that just works. It feels cozy and creative at the same time. The drink itself isn't super sweet, but the cream top! (oh man!). That's the magic. It's sweet, fluffy, and honestly one of the best cream tops I've ever had. Even though I usually like my drinks on the sweeter side, this combo is perfect. The balance is chef's kiss. Heads up: some drinks are only iced or only hot. It's just how they make them, so go with it. Trust the process. They know what's up. Parking's easy: there's a small lot in the back, plus some street parking around the shop. Inside, there are about 4-6 small tables. People come to chill, study, work, minimalistic coffee shop vibe. Welcome to the neighborhood, Yihui! We had an amazing pour over and a latte this morning. Both were perfection. The pour over was deliciously crazy (we tried the Monolith Watermelon) and it was presented so artfully--a truly thoughtful coffee experience. There are also plenty of seats and it has a great communal vibe while not being too noisy (nice work on the music volume choice, haha). Service was friendly (and be patient on the time--this isn't Starbucks, they are making special stuff here and some of it takes time!) There is ample parking, with a lot in the rear, but street parking can get tricky. The table can get taken up quickly. Coffee & pastry: 5/5. This is truly the first specialty coffee shop in MPK so I won't have to drive all the way to Kumquat anymore. Around here lately there have been a few great coffee places opening up (Three Fields and re:bakesic in Alhambra), but Yihui is better than those IMO, specifically their pour overs. My husband had one of their Ethiopian pour over and said he hasn't had coffee this good in a very long time (for the record, we almost always go to specialty coffee shops or just make coffee at home from high quality single origin beans, so that's very high praise from him). I also had a latte and it was the best I've ever had (classic iced latte, no flavoring). Not sure if it's the espresso or the milk or both, it just hits right on both accounts. Not sure where they get their pastries from but their croissants are really delicious. Crunchy, buttery, flakey. Crumbs everywhere = approved. Service: on a regular weekday, it's all good, but on weekends it gets busy especially when people in the know come here to get pour overs. There's only one barista who makes pour over and one barista who makes espresso based drinks/the rest, so if you order something that's not a cold brew (eg readily available), be prepared to wait. I really hope management can improve workflow and make the wait less long. This the single biggest factor that will decide whether they can sustain their business IMO, because otherwise there isn't a lot of competitors for specialty coffees around here, and if they can manage their workflow, they will get customers who otherwise have to drive to Highland Park/Ktown/Downtown for specialty coffee. I've been coming here every other day (used to go out for coffee just once a week bc coffees I like are too far). I'm happy, my wallet isn't. read more

i ordered their cloudy signature and it was delicious! it consists of an americano base, a (sea salt?) cream top, and sprinkles of toffee bits on top. nice strong coffee flavor that wasn't too sweet. interior was modern and clean. pretty spacious with some seating. i came in during a saturday afternoon to study and initially there were no seats, but luckily a table became available. there wasn't much of a line as well if you're curious about the wait. only one party was ahead of us would definitely come back again when i'm around the area! read more

The drink I got was the Matcha latte. It was good. However, I was surprised to see the price charged was $9.50 when on the menu it had $6. I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip which I selected no, since I tend to leave cash on a cup or near register/pick up area. I was surprised to have been charged that amount without any "tip" added. I appreciate the hard work people do on tea/coffee or food services, but to be added tip without you approving it is shady. We ordered the cloudy and iced matcha latte and they were both really good, 10/10 would definitely come back! Cloudy: salted cream top was the perfect mix of sweet and salty -- not overly sweet which I enjoyed. I also liked that it was over an Americana and not a latte so it wasn't too milky. The date/pear flavors weren't too overpowering either so you could really taste the coffee itself. Matcha Late: I didn't think I would like the unsweetened matcha latte as much as I did -- most unsweetened matchas are a bit too grassy tasting for me but I really enjoyed this one! read more

I've been waiting for an Asian owned authentic coffee shop in the SGV, and Yihui did not disappoint. How I define a legit coffee shop is if they offer pour overs. If you know, you know! Yihui has an impressive menu of pour overs (they even offer a coffee flight!), with expert descriptions and unique flavor profiles. Another sign of authenticity that impressed me, but that I did not see coming, was the handwritten card explaining in wonderful detail the tasting notes, the temperature, the process, the roaster, the origin, extraction time, and even the barista's name! I just love that attention to detail, extra points for being handwritten too. Completely unnecessary but absolutely welcomed! I don't think the pour over I chose was my cup of tea but I appreciated the complexity. I think the complex offerings plays nicely with the minimal aesthetics of the shop, from the big negative space to the understated cups. If you're a creative, this is a must visit. My only big critique is that I had to drink my coffee fast because it wasn't hot enough, so I couldn't really get to sip and enjoy it, with one pinky in the air, obviously. I'm not sure if it was considered but I'd suggest warming the cup first with hot water so it doesn't lose heat. If you're a coffee nerd or just in the mood to try something new, I'd recommend Yihui.
