The coffee was smooth and not acidic. I tried... 1. Fist Bump (5/5) Piccolo style coffee with very subtle purple yam flavor notes. It was silky , smooth, and each sip was pleasantly heartwarming. Overall, it was a well balanced drink. 2. Signature Cloudy (5/5) The flavor profile of this drink is red date, pear and cream. The foam part was truly cloud-like. The coffee had a subtle fruit flavor, but you can't specifically taste pear or red date. I think the red date part gives it a lightly sweet note that balanced very well with the quality coffee. The inside of the coffee shop and even their drink cups have a clean, minimalist design. Staff were friendly and would be happy to offer tips or answer any questions. I've been here a couple of times now and enjoy their drinks and atmosphere! The employees I've encountered are all nice and helpful without being too overbearing which I appreciate. Interior is minimalistic, but chic and there's usually enough seating for me to sit on most visits. Good place to get some work done as they have free wifi and outlets near the tables. Saw this coffee shop pop up in my social media feed and decided to check it out. Currently still in soft opening, but Yihui is a welcome addition to the SGV area as we don't have too many coffee shops, This coffee shop is located on Garvey, taking over the spot of a former boba tea shop. There's plenty of street parking, so that shouldn't be a problem. Interior is very spacious, although I feel like they could make more use of the room and add a few more tables and chairs. Very modern and clean, aesthetics. There were quite a few people chatting and studying when I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. They have a slow bar section which appears to be pour over coffees as well signature drinks and classic drinks. I opted to try the Cloudy $7 which is supposed to have red date, pear, and cream. I noticed that the order before me who also ordered Cloudy had a much darker base than I did. Overall the drink was decent but I didn't taste any red date or pear flavor - in fact, the coffee tasted kind of like regular black coffee with cream on top. Flavor wasn't bad, but I was hoping it would have more pear/date flavor. Also ordered the Island $7 - matcha and toasted coconut. Eh, I'm not a big coconut fan so I didn't care for this drink but I can see why people would enjoy it. There was a slight hint of coconut with every sip of the drink. Yihui Coffee is a newer coffee spot, and we decided to give it a try. We went on a Sunday morning, and with only a few people ahead in line, drinks took about 20 minutes. We got the Cloudy (iced americano with notes of red dates, pear, + cream) & Island (coconut matcha latte). As someone who enjoys strong, less sweetened coffee, the Cloudy drink was strong/bold, but more on the sour end for me, which isn't really my preference, though it might be for others. I was very excited to try this new coffee shop in town, located in an area largely populated with boba shops. Their menu was solid with regular classics and interesting specialty signature drinks. For example, the Cloudy drink: red date, pear, and cream. They also have pastries and when I left, I noticed some pastry were removed from the display so I think they got sold out. I ordered the Golden Co-ferment, which is an specialty drink. It's coffee steeped with golden oolong tea. I asked if it can be sweeten and they added in honey for me. The drink was light and smooth. This is a nice coffee shop located in Monterey Park. The first time I went there in the late morning, it was quite busy. All the tables were filled up with people working on their laptops. The name of this coffee shop in my home country language somehow expressed excitement or enthusiasm so first time I heard about it, it instantly hooked me. The monochromatic interior made it look simple and clean. Visiting on a Sunday noon, the venue was full but not like jam-packed with long-line and their serving time was pretty swift with multiple baristas worked behind the counter. Multiple seats were available, but I'd say it's perfect to come in a group of 2-4 max, unless you just wanted to get a grab-and-go. Many of the guests did sit and work on their laptops as they provided multiple plugs. Given the seats distance were pretty close to each other, so it could be quite loud especially if the other guest had quite high volume LOL; exactly my experience but fortunately didn't bother me much. I did love the simple yet cozy vibe, and most importantly it's cold, which's super helpful amidst hot summer days in East LA. There's parking lot at the back, but plenty of free street parking available in front of the venue. At my time of visit, there's no food available but I'd seen some people posting the pastries they offered earlier. I went for their #1 signature, The Cloudy, which I was highly fond of. Serving red date and pear as the natural sweetener to the iced coffee, it tasted smooth and light without any acidic or bitter after taste at all. Nice store front. Once you get inside, you'll notice this place is packed! There are 9 tables on the left but they definitely can add a few more tables. People are here on their laptops or chatting so expect a slow turnaround in seating. I ordered the cloudy which is their iced americano with red date, pear, and cream. I was lucky enough to get a seat before my drink came. I tried reading my book but it is loud as hell even with my AirPods on. Check out Yihui a while back when they first opened! Saw some reviews online and thought that the minimalistic vibe with the black theme color is pretty cool! Came to Yihui around 3 PM on a Friday in desperate need of a caffeine boost, and wow this place did not disappoint. I'd been seeing their Chinese fusion coffee all over social media and finally decided to try it for myself. The interior was cozy and perfect for studying or working! Always chasing the next cup of coffee, I bookmarked Yihui Coffee and hightailed it over as early as I could. Parking around the block and behind the cafe was very easy. As with many cafes, I opt for the iced latte so that I could taste the beans without syrups... and the espresso here did not disappoint! The beans did not give a hint of bitter, sour, or acidic. Saw a sign outside the shop so I decided to stop by and check them out. They have plenty of street parking directly in front of the shop, or they have a large parking lot in the back as well. This cafe has been on my radar since it came up on my instagram feed. I love cafes and cafe culture so it was inevitable that I would visit. Food & Drink - 4/5 - I ordered the Cloudy later on, my friend and I split a filled doughnut and the tomato egg pastry. The Cloudy is marketed as one of their specialty drinks and I did think that it was quite good. The coffee was smooth and the flavor was nice. I enjoy the cream top that wasn't too sweet and wasn't too heavy. The tomato egg pastry was nice but a bit bland in my opinion. I think it could be seasoned a bit more. The filled doughnut was filled with fruity cream that was tart and not too sweet. My guess was the filling was passion fruit or pineapple flavor. I know that the pastries are sourced from another vendor and not made in house. Whoever made them had great ideas. Price - $$ - I would consider this a "overpriced novelty LA coffee shop" as it came out to be almost $8 a cup and about $7-8 per pastry. It is due to the novelty/specialty nature of this cafe. Whether or not this may seem worth it to you or not for this price point is subjective, but I would encourage at least trying it once if you have the chance or to use it as a treat yourself moment if you really love coffee. I'd like to think doing this is to support a small business. Service - 5/5 - The owner and staff are super sweet. They have a very friendly personality and are quite patient with questions. The ham and cheese sandwich was also poorly made -- the ham was tough and dry, and the inside was still cold, as if it hadn't been properly heated. The bread was also stale and hard, making the whole thing unpleasant to eat. The matcha drink was equally disappointing, tasting overly bitter and unbalanced, with none of the smoothness you'd expect. For nearly $14, the quality and portion size are not acceptable at all. My sisters who live in the area recommended this place and we were not disappointed. First off, right when we walked in, my husband (who's a coffee hobbyist) immediately noticed the espresso set up was impressive, with a top-of-the-line machine and scale. The owner made our drinks and my husband was impressed at the meticulousness and attention to detail that was put into the espresso process, from weighing the beans and milk, to using a special tool to stir and distribute the coffee grinds evenly before making the espresso. Most coffee shops skip many of these steps because it's just too time consuming but when we saw the drinks being prepared this way, we knew Yihui is a shop that takes the time to get it right. We both ordered flat whites -- he got his with whole milk and I got mine with oat milk. Alternative milks can lead to hit-and-miss drinks at most shops, with the oat milk flavor being overpowering if the espresso is under extracted, but I really enjoyed mine! My husband also gave his drink a thumbs up. We ordered a decaf latte for our kid (who, at age 9, already loves the taste of coffee lol). I also tried a sip of my brother's Cloudy drink and it was tasty without being overly sweet the way many specialty handcrafted drinks can be. So happy to support an Asian-run local coffee shop!
