Kung Pao Beef and Shrimp Fried Rice

Not your typical wonton, odd taste to the broth too, not a fan. Their kung pao beef, shrimp fried rice and their fried tofu were pretty good though. Prices were decent

Oh yeah, Shanghai China and I knew each other. It was like a one-night stand that I immediately regretted and hoped in hindsight that it was all just a nightmare. But it wasn't. It was real. Over a decade ago. Before Grubhub. Before Eat24. Before DoorDash. Actually it wasn't that horrible, but I remember trying their diet special of Steamed Chicken with Vegetables, not the best idea for takeout since it was sitting in the delivery guy's car for quite some time before it got to me. Dried out and rubbery is what I remember. Now I came back because I was looking for some lunch after a half-hearted workout at the gym and realized I had never actually been in the restaurant before. It was pretty sparse but frankly what I expected. I didn't order the Steamed Chicken with Vegetables but instead went for the $7.95 Eggplant with Garlic Sauce. It was drowning in the perennial brown sauce that always puzzled me at every low-end Chinese restaurant as to how the cook can achieve that particular shade of brown on a plate (photo: http://bit.ly/2s52WR1). The white rice looked absolutely timid afraid to be overcome by the sauce. Because it was part of the lunch special menu, I got a cup of the Soup of the Day, which judging from the brownness of the broth, I was guessing it was the same soup they served the day before, maybe even the year before (photo: http://bit.ly/2rZulng). And of course, there was the obligatory deep-fried egg roll which I didn't touch. Yet for all that, it was not the same one-night stand from a decade ago. I mean my server didn't boil my pet rabbit in a stock pot. She was quite nice. FOOD - 2 stars...a whole lotta brown AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...plain inside SERVICE - 4 stars...no Glenn Close...she was pleasant TOTAL - 2 stars...did I mention how brown that sauce was?

Amazing food, amazing price. Didn't think I'll find something cheap in Sf. But I did, n this place is clean, it's in the corner of mission and south Van Ness.. ordered spicy fish since I don't eat meat. It was delish!!! I say a whole lot of food for little money, I ain't complaining, I'm actually happy. Thanks guys!!! Just an update just when I was done doing my review, a roach came out of nowhere. This will be the last time I'm going to eat here..

***3.5 Stars*** A coworker suggested I try this place. They have great lunch specials that come with a soup of the day in addition to your entree. It is a small restaurant but perfect to grab a quick meal alone or with a friend. Ordered the sweet & sour chicken with white rice that came with hot & sour soup. Everything tasted good, was hot and cooked fresh. Huge portions for under $10! Remember to pay in cash or else be subject to the $9 card minimum. Located near a busy intersection with a bus stop out front. There is no parking in front of the restaurant so you'll need to park your car nearby and walk or take public transit

Spicy Chicken/Mongolian Beef - Shanghai China - San Francisco
    Mark D.

This is a review of delivery from Shanghai China Restaurant. It is easy to order from http://eat24hours.com/. Delivery - The order was placed at 2:35 PM. The order was delivered at 3:35 PM. The estimated time for delivery was 45-60 minutes. Delivery was prompt but not particularly fast. There is no delivery fee. The delivery person was polite. Order Minimum - It is very low ($10) Mandarin Spicy Chicken - Even thought the dish has the word spicy in the title and I selected the Hot option, there was nothing spicy about it. It was bland, bland, bland. They also did NOT include the side of hot sauce that was requested. If you like broccoli, they did include a ton of very fresh broccoli. Mongolian Beef - This is another dish that is traditionally spicy and I selected Hot. But, it was also bland, bland, bland. I have no idea what you get if you select mild. Once again, they did NOT include the requested side of hot sauce. The meat was tender but was quite oily. The veggies were crisp but it was basically just onions. Boiled Rice - The rice was good. I ordered and paid for two orders. However, I only received one small container. I can't imagine that two orders of rice could be squeezed into that small of a container. Packing - The food was neatly packed in a combination of clam-shell and traditional Chinese take-out containers. 7-Up - I ordered and paid for 3 7-Ups. I only received one and it was room temperature. Pricing - I would place their prices on the mid to high range for Chinese food delivery. Mandarin Spicy Chicken 1 $7.50 Make it : Hot Instructions: side of hot sauce please Mongolian Beef 1 $7.95 Make it : Hot Instructions: side of hot sauce please http://tinyurl.com/3nl5c54 Can Soda 3 $1.25 Flavor: 7UP Boiled Rice (For One) 2 $0.95 Subtotal: $21.10 Tax: $1.79 Total: $22.89 Fortune Cookie - Now is the best time for you to be spontaneous. Serendipity! Lucky Numbers - This was some kind of budget fortune cookie. It did not have any lucky numbers. They could only afford the fortune. Overall - Bland food. Delivery that is not particularly fast. So so prices. Inaccuracies on the order. No lucky numbers. I would not rate it as one of my top experiences. Their low minimum delivery fee would make them a money saving option for ordering for one.

House special fried rice and fried wontons
    Sean G.

I found one of my co-workers delivery menus and decided to check it out. Its your standard american style chinese takeout but great prices and huge portions. I ordered both the house special chicken fried rice and the fried wontons to barely put me over the 10 buck free delivery. I swear it was enough to feed 3 or 4 people. The wontons were freshly fried and very crispy but not much meat to speak of. At 4 bucks for a giant rack of them I cant complain tho. The fried rice had a solid blend of all the meats, egg, and veggies but while healthier i suppose was steamed instead of fried. I was in a greasy chinese takeout fried rice kinda mood but it wasnt bad and was a ton of food. Not bad but nothing to write home about. Great price for alot of food if your living on ice cube sandwiches till payday as well.

Definitely don't understand the hate on this place from other reviewers. It's so inexpensive, and it's always hot and flavorful when it arrives to your table. I'm here once a week, as it's walking distance from my office, and is approximately half the price of most places around it. For $8.75 or less at lunch time, you get hot tea, a cup of soup (hot-n-sour or egg drop), and a GENEROUS plate of food with rice and an egg roll. The restaurant is clean, and service is quick and friendly. Is it the best Chinese you'll ever have? Nope. Best value in SF? Probably!

My order on this cold day.

On this cold day I placed an order for a large, HOT order of combination wonton soup. EXCELLENT, that they delivered! The soup arrived in less than 30 mins, and the soup was steaming out. The meat, and shrimp were tender, and good veggies. I will place an order again.

I wanted to try take out. I ordered beef with scramble egg over rice. One man quoted me $7.65. One lady quoted me $8.25. So, I paid $8.25. I was going to charge it and the minimum to use credit card is $9.00. The food came out quickly and I was on my way back to work. Opened my take out bag which was bagged nicely. My beef and egg meal came with an soy sauce packet, egg roll, fortune cookie, napkins, and fork. The oyster sauce was a little skimpy on the beef and egg while the rice was plentiful. Overall, my take out meal was good. Yes, I would go back there for lunch. Yes, I would recommend this restaurant to my friends for a quick meal. I suggest you arrive early since u am assuming this place gets packed for lunch.

Fried Wont Tons. Lets play Where's Waldo with the Won Ton filling shall we......oh yeah $5
    Tynesha B.

Overall this place has gotten better. Quick tip: The Fried Won Tons only come with a crumb of meat (literally) and if you find a hair in tour foid take a picture of it before you point it out. If you can handle that, they are not bad.

    Mongolian beef over rice

Best value for money for a lunch from office. Fast, good comfort food, great taste, huge portions and serves free soup, which is actually tasty. This has been a go to place for me, even though if you time is wrong during lunch, seating would be difficult. So, for a group larger than 4 I would say check in a bit early for lunch. Ambience isn't great but then you can't expect a lot for $6.50-$7.50 a meal. The food on the other hand is very tasty, and almost all the dishes I tried they come with a lot of veggies. However there is a downside for some Chow mein and fried rice, since they are oily, but then again, which kind of Chinese here isn't. My go to is spicy beef, pork and chickens over rice which balances the oil and you can still have the taste. Comes with spring rolls. The schezwan beef comes with peanuts and not too spicy, which kind of was a surprise for me. The Mongolian beef over rice is awesome and again not spicy. Pork chow meins are good too. Overall great cheap delicious food for lunch on any day.

Generals chicken lunch special. Since it's not originally from China, everyone seems to make it differently. Not my fav.

The standout for us was the sticky rice roll! I've been wanting to try it out for a while and was extremely happy to see they had it here. I also really enjoyed the pan friend dumpling, it was extremely flavorful and juicy! As far as the other food, everything was decent, good at best. Pretty standard in terms of dim sum, with nothing that really wow'd us. The service here was great! Despite it being a full house with constant to-go orders, we were able to order quickly and got our food really fast as well. Everything came out fresh and piping hot which I really appreciated. Enjoyed my experience here, but not particularly eager to go back right away. Definitely worth a try if you're craving dimsum in the area!

The owners, the Shen family, are retiring. When they opened in 2008, replacing two popular Chinese western food restaurants, they were a refreshing addition to the mainly Cantonese cuisine Chinatown community. There was only a small Shanghai literal hole in the wall spot across the street that closed many years ago. The mom did the cooking while the daughter ran the front of the house, literally producing home style Shanghainese cuisine. They have regular normal northern cuisine favorites like hot & sour soup and mapo tofu, small bites like XLB (soup dumplings), green onion pancakes, and Sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings). I often had family style dinners here enjoying Shanghai staples like Lion's head meatballs, Shanghai stir fried shrimp (use that blank vinegar), braised pork shank, and stir-fried eel. Never had the pleasure in trying their Dong Po pork. Get their steamed rice with bacon and vegetable to accompany those saucy dishes. With their departure, I do not know of any authentic Shanghai restaurants in San Francisco... clue me in if you think of one. The closest that comes to mind now is in San Mateo off the top of my head. Thank you, Bund Shanghai and Shen Family for providing my family, my coworkers, and me many meals over the years. The staff were friendly and super prompt about clearing empty plates and refilling our tea whenever we signaled it was done, which is always great as the dishes just get on coming! We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, and several really stood out. The spicy tendon was fantastic, shredded paper thin and swimming in a classic spicy sauce. The spicy lamb dumplings were another highlight, with an incredibly thin wrapper and a super flavorful and not gamey at all lamb filling. I also loved the stir fried rice cakes, which were sliced thin enough to avoid that overly chewy texture, and the stir fried noodles Shanghai style were classic and simple in the best way, with big chunks of cabbage and meat and just executed really (the chefs clearly have some serious wok skills!). Not everything we ordered was an absolute knockout as the vegetable dishes could use a bit more flavor and seasoning, but everything overall was good, and the portions across the board were very generous. The desserts were a last-minute decision and I am so glad we went for them. The lava custard buns were fluffy and amazing, with a molten salted egg custard inside, and the sesame balls had a satisfyingly crispy exterior that gave way to a perfectly chewy interior and sweet red bean filling. The value here is also excellent. We left absolutely stuffed and spent around $30 per person, which felt like a great deal for how much food we got and how much we enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

San Tung was one of the only busy spots on Irving Street during a weekday lunch hour, which felt like a promising sign. We were seated pretty quickly at a large round table across from two other diners, which was totally fine. And after looking around at everyone's tables, it was clear that these two dishes were the most popular items. Since this was my first time trying the dry fried chicken wings, I was surprised that they came out coated in a thick, sticky sauce--so not necessarily "dry" in the way I expected. Flavor-wise, they leaned more sweet than savory. I think this dish would be a big hit for people who enjoy sweet and sour or kung pao-style chicken, which isn't usually my personal preference. My husband definitely enjoyed them though, so I can see why they have such a loyal following. The black bean noodles were warm and comforting, with a nice homey feel. The sauce had good flavor, although I thought it leaned a little bland and wasn't quite as thick or rich in texture as I personally prefer. Overall, San Tung was a fun spot to finally try, especially given how much hype surrounds those wings. I'd definitely come back with a bigger group of friends so we could order more dishes and get a better feel for the menu, but I probably wouldn't come back on my own for anything in particular.
