Been going to Zabars for 45 years. Had the brisket the other day and it was as tough as shoe leather. Bought a rotisserie chicken today and it had more fat on it than meat. Fruit is 2nd rate at best. I want to still love this place but they keep making it harder and harder to do so. read more

No problem with the quality of the food. The service experience at the smoked salmon counter could have been a lot better. The older man slicing salmon moved at a snail's pace for the customer in front of me. There was a second employee behind the counter but he was at the time not helping customers. We waited patiently and when the older man finished with the customer and it would have been our turn , he just walked away without ever acknowledging our presence. The second employee then helped us and we have no complaints about him. The first guy needs some training to be working in customer service, but I guess if you serve tourists day in and day out you become indifferent. One of a kind delicatessen. Historic and very vibrant. Very busy and utilised by the locals in town. They just about have everything you need! From nuts to kitchen gadgets. The prepared food section is amazing! You've got to experience the store for yourself! The staff are very friendly, and very busy stocking items and serving customers. The only disappointment I can note would be the take out food area, which is another entrance on the left of the main store. They only have a few high top tables outside, if you are inclined to eat right away. They have a limited menu consisting of panini and bagel sandwiches, in addition to soups and coffee. I ordered a couple panini sandwiches (turkey and pastrami), and matzo ball soup. My sandwiches were decent, but not impressive. I've had better. Very sparse on the protein. Service was robotic and certainly not friendly. You better know what you want before approaching the counter. Overall, the main store was amazing! Can't wait to come back. You'll be better off buying the prepared foods or deli items, and making up your own meal. I would avoid the take-out area. There are too many other sandwich restaurants/take-out establishments in NYC that are way better (I.e., Katz Deli). read more

This was an interesting new experience. I never had Jewish food before. I got the classic nova which is the salmon sandwich with tomatoes. The salmon was surprisingly fresh (didn't expect this level from a $14 sandwich). I don't think this type of cuisine is my cup of tea but this food was good and interesting and I'm glad I tried it. We walked to Central Park nearby and everyone had Zabars bag or sandwich in hand. We also got this dessert bacco I think and it was very interesting like a cinnamon roll but with chocolate instead of cinnamon. Funnily the restaurant gave us duplicates of a couple of items so we got free food I guess haha. Duplicates is way better than missing food! Zaban used to be an iconic NY food store with great products, speciAlta food items and I'm so sorry to witness how bad the food and service has gotten over the years. I had the worst experience there time after time including arrogant staff, careless manager and lousy food like stale chicken liver pate and rotting produce. The worst part is that no one there cares. Because they have captive UWS Jewish consumers that keep adjusting to the declining standar. Very disappointing!!!!! read more

Outstanding! The best black and white cookies I've sampled to date, excellent babka, and excellent coffee. Definitely a must go if you're in New York. Obviously, I don't really know how "old" New York was but this place has been around since 1934 and still going strong. That is something. The ambiance is that of a gourmet deli. To go orders are on one side and the other side is a grocery/deli that reminded me of "bodegas" in Europe. We ordered coffees, a bagel & lox sandwich and the ultimate babkas (cinnamon & chocolate). The sandwich was really tasty but their chocolate babka is phenomenal, just absolutely delicious. Service is ok, maybe a 3 stars but the overall experience and taste is what makes this review a solid 4 stars. Tip: If you're a foodie like me, don't miss this place. read more

Zabar's, a once reliable high-end, specialty market, is no longer a trustworthy provider of quality foods, or customer service. I was a long time customer. I am no longer a customer. I recently ordered a shipment that included 1 pound of smoked Nova salmon, and 1 cinnamon babka. The order arrived quickly and without issue. The babka was very good. But the salmon was not. It was so bad as to be inedible. I think most of you reading this know what "bad fish" means, so I won't entertain you with the full details of that horrible experience. I emailed Zabar's customer service explaining the issue. They replied with a blatant attempt to gaslight me by writing back that they'd had no other complaints about the fish. I wrote back "You do now." At no time did they offer a replacement or a refund. It's sad to see a once-great business fall so far. This review is my opinion about this business and you might find that your experience differs from mine. With that said, I cannot recommend this business and highly recommend that shoppers go elsewhere. read more

As an UWSider, I'm glad Zabar's is still here and making classic food. That said, it's more tourist trap than local specialty grocery. I no longer buy much other than cheese and coffee because absolutely everything is pre-packaged in single-use plastic clamshells. I'm environmentally conscious and know that less than 5% of plastic put in recycling bins is actually recycled. No matter how good, I won't buy a cookie that will result in plastic pollution that is still here for my great grandchildren. Also, acidic items packed in plastic must be leaching nanoplastics which is not a good thing. That said, nobody's perfect and occasionally I cave to my cravings or parental requests. Today I went to buy classic potato salad for my dad. It was $8.99 for .88/lb. Just a couple of weeks ago the same size container was $6.99. There is no reason for that price hike other than pure greed. Zabar's owns their building, minimum wage hasn't gone up, potatoes are the same price they were last month. The only ingredient that has gone up in price are eggs. There is only a fractional amount of egg in mayonnaise in their potato salad so maybe, at most, that warranted a $.10 price increase. The only good news is that we'll all be eating less calories because I refuse to be ripped off. Then there are the regular grocery prices. I needed whole milk buttermilk to bake a cake. The same brand I purchased at Zabar's for $7.49 was $5.49 at Fairway and $4.89 at Whole Foods. The same goes for almost everything else. Visit Zabar's as a tourist to experience the "real upper west side." The smoked fish slicers are a treasure. The fish is fantastic and it's really entertaining. Same with their in-house coffee. Skip everything else. The bagels are better at Tal and the prices more reasonable ANYWHERE else. read more

I live on the East side, so I don't make it over to Zabar's super often. However, whenever I do I'm always so pleased! The staff is friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious. The inside is nice and cozy, nothing too trendy or over the top which I like. It's classic! I think that the lox here is some of the best in Manhattan, although it is on the pricier side. Decent place serving deli food-- had the signature nova bagel which was tasty but probably not enough for $17, the raspberry rugelach tasted good but was quite small, enjoyed my vietnamese iced coffee which was a surprising offering but glad i got it. While visiting NYC, one must eat bagels! My brother-in-law picked up bagels, scallion cream cheese and lox for us to enjoy while in the city. The everything bagel from Zabar's was different than most you see around and I really liked it. It was perfect slightly toasted and covered with scallion cream cheese. The sesame bagel was great, too. I enjoyed this one with butter. The bagels had a great chew to them. Classic NYC bagels done right! Normally, I'm not a huge fan of lox but the lox from Zabar's was very good! It tasted so fresh, had a nice smooth texture as well as rich flavor. If you're a fan of lox, this is a must try item. I've also had the chocolate babka from Zabar's. This is great and travels well! It's especially delicious toasted up in a pan with some butter. I would highly recommend picking one of these up for your own enjoyment or as a gift. read more

One of my must do experiences whenever I visit New York is to have a pastrami sandwich. I was staying in the Times Square area but with Carnegie Deli now closed I wanted to try what I thought might be the next best thing: Zabar's in the Upper West Side. Since I was planning on being in the Upper West Side anyway it seemed like a good choice. While waiting for our pastrami sandwich at the deli counter I saw a sign from one of the founders that said something to the effect that Zabar's has the among the best pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. When my wife and I started eating the pastrami sandwich it was the worst we've ever had. Literally, the worst. The meat was both fatty and tough. My wife said, that's not pastrami. I said it's not like any pastrami sandwich I've ever had. It was just really poor meat. Because we're not in New York often and we think of a really good pastrami sandwich as a treat, it was a huge disappointment for us. read more

Its an institution. Its also the first place that I've ever seen that sells staples like Lox and Cream Cheese, Babkas and Rugela along with Vietnamese Coffee! I had a selection of the famous Babkas and a coffee. They really hit the spot and the portions for the Babkas was great. Great if you need a mid afternoon snack. I went to Zabar's because you have to in New York. I was very excited to see the variety of food and picked out a few of their famous items. My biggest qualm was the prices, I didn't expect a small tub of cream cheese to be $7. Overall, I really liked the sesame bagel I got and the cream cheese was good but not worth the money.
