Bare vegetable cream cheese on an everything bagel
    Brice L.

I want to love their counter. I really do. But I said heavy veggie cream cheese, and this ain't it... It looks like the cream cheese has been scraped off, and the other half was just as bare. It's really hit or miss here and the bagels aren't reliably good. I will try their ice cream sometime, but will pass for breakfast.

There's a number of items on the menu at Zabar's that I'd still have to go back and try, but we were on a tight schedule and had a time crunch this trip to the city. We went in and got two things of the numerous items that we had on the list. We got the black and whites, as well as a couple of chocolate babka. The cookies themselves were just alright. However, the babka, my mouth is watering thinking of it. It's a shame it'll be a while before I'm back on the UWS, because I'd go back this moment to try the other things on the menu. The babka was definitely a standout. The bread itself was good, and the filling was great. I'd eat that again and again and again. Just on that, this place makes me want to return. There are a number of things I'd still like to try, but that babka was that good that it'd be a good reason by itself to return.

This market/deli has everything. I don't know how someone shops here and doesn't buy way too much good food. We barely controlled ourselves.

This iconic family owned gourmet food store in the Upper West Side of Manhattan is famous for its bagels, smoked fish, lox and salmon, coffee, cheeses, olives, deli favorites, a housewares section and baked goods. Founded in 1934, it's a NYC institution. It is fun to walk around to see everything. I purchased a box of the Black and White cookies $11.98. They were delicious.

    Prosciutto Panini

Store was pretty empty when we stopped by on a Saturday afternoon for lunch which was a pleasant surprise. I got the prosciutto panini which consists of fresh prosciutto mozzarella, tomato, and basil, on ciabatta. The bread had lots of flavor, and the meat was nice and fresh. The portion was large, I actually had some leftover which is unusual for me. The store did get a little busier, but was still a lot more empty than I've seen it on previous visits. They have some small tables to sit at which was very convenient.

    Breakfast burrito, Chocolate babka

Breakfast burrito was mid, could tell it was premade because the very center was cold like it was not heated properly after refrigeration. Not much meat inside. The chocolate babka was really good though.

This is an amazing market/store. Everything you need for a picnic or for cooking at home. The produce is amazing and the cheese and meats are second to none. Obviously a local place but has an enchanting historic vibe. Definitely worth a trip to experience if you're in the area.

Having grown up in the nabe, this deli holds a special place in my heart. On a cool summer morning, stopped in for coffee and an onion bagel with shmear, all for $7.50 -- a deal! The place was busy with happy diners chomping and slurping.

Zabar is definitely a culinary experience in New York City. Plenty of prepared food, pickles, nova salmon, coffee beans, bread. The store looks cramped with products, some are unique that you can't find anywhere else. Definitely check it out when you're visiting.

Counter man carefully slicing the nova for the bagel sandwich. Love it.

This is a specialty grocer with a zillion great products. They also have a bakery department and a bagel sandwich department, both of which you need to visit. The cheese department is at the entrance and if you are a cheese freak, this will be your happy place. The chocolate rugelach were the best I have ever had. The cinnamon ones were fine but the chocolate ones were phenomenal. I wish I had bought more than just two. Apparently, "nova" is different than lox. They look and taste the same to me but I am clearly a novice. The nova bagel sandwich, with tomatoes, capers, onions, and a huge shmear of cream cheese, was fantastic. The counter man probably spent five minutes carefully cutting the nova slices. It was a thing of beauty to watch and weirdly relaxing. I did not love the potato garlic knish. It was very dense and a massive belly bomb. However, if you love garlic more than life itself, this may be for you. Trust me, no vampires will get within a mile of you if you eat this thing. If I lived close to a shop like this, and had a lot of disposable income, it would be spent here. This is well worth a visit.

It's heaven inside Zabar's! I have never been anywhere like it. A long time Institution and it was my 1st time there. Loved the appetizering counters (meats, cheese, bakery, etc) I have mail ordered Cinnamon Babka so I could have a slice of New York at home. I wanna go back!!

This store is located on a busy street with lots of activity and people coming in and out. This store sells more than just coffee and bagels. This is a mega store of appetizing, deli, bakery, and many, many food products - some you've never seen. Upstairs is a store of gadgets and kitchen toys and loads of merchandise. This store requires some time to get through. It's so big and interesting that you need to stroll causally. This is well worth your time if you're visiting locally. I will certainly stroll back through when I'm back in the area.

The New York institution. Came here with a local and got the hookup. Instead of buying the made bagels and nova, we bought some loose bagels, the salmon pieces in the cooler and a half pint of schmear. The result is a fully loaded breakfast that is off the charts. The salmon here is the best I have ever had and at a great value. This will be a standard for me whenever I am in NYC.

Do they sell foie gras? Not just pate, but whole or sliced foie gras?

Yes & there is a back case of various pate's as well

    Does Zabars still sell caviar?

I saw a few tins (French blue) of Russian Sevruga Malossol there a week before Christmas? However, it could be that it is a specialty food during the holiday. Perhaps call their catering line & see how/when they offer it & if it is for purchase…

    Do they still sell cookware?

YES! They have a full line of everything and anything you could think for the kitchen upstairs on the second floor it's amazing.

What percentage of whole wheat flour is used in the whole wheat bagel? Asking for someone with dietary restrictions.

    17.345%

Do they still have onion rolls? I've seen a few reviews that mention them but they are a couple of years old.

    Yes

Do they have truffle butter here?

They are probably the densest deli and supermarket in NY. I would (almost) guarantee the do since they have always had ANYTHING I've wanted

It felt like items weren't made with care and mass produced at a factory or something. I went 10 minutes before they closed and there was still 10+ of each dessert. I'm not convinced that they will dispose of them. Even if they do, it means they didn't do a good job in forecasting demand especially after being in business for multiple years. I ordered mango and yuzu. Both were too sweet and had one dimensional flavor and textures, not refreshing per their stated flavors. Even if their appearances take effort, they don't look pretty enough for me to forgive what goes in my mouth. I'm used to having patisseries with many layers and elements. Mango's sponge probably only took up 20% of the bottom, because I barely had bites of it. Most of my bites didn't have any. I didn't like how liquid the filling was. It didn't exactly ooze out but just melted into a puddle in my mouth. Yuzu looks pretty with the pink and yellow glaze, but it didn't go with the realistic fruit theme. I chose it for the flavor combination which is strawberry, yuzu, and guava. This was slightly better in terms of flavor variety in the mouth. The flower on top had a weird off putting flavor. The bottom crispy rice apparently is supposed to be chocolate but it came out plain. It was tasteless anyway, so not effective in terms of flavor or texture.

I had to run to work after an appointment so I ordered for takeout. The person taking my order was friendly. I opted for the Lumberjack and a black cold brew. I received the drink very quickly, with a short wait for the sandwich. While waiting, one member of the staff stocking up supplies on the side started chatting with me and then she offered to check up on my sandwich. She came out with it shortly thereafter. She was very friendly and helpful. The sandwich held up well during my 15-minute commute to the office. It is a really indulgent sandwich, with each bite revealing the sweetness and butteriness of the maple crueller, the saltiness of the thick cut bacon, and the savoriness of the cheese and the eggs as the yolks popped. I sipped the cold brew in between bites to cut the richness. It was a very satisfying meal. The Lumberjack is not something I would recommend you eat every day, but it's good as an occasional treat. In the past I've ordered lunch from Daily Provisions via delivery (the "Chefy" salad and the chicken milanese with arugula salad are my favorites), but I might start adding other breakfast sandwiches to the mix.

I will say that's it's definitely not a good on-the-go sandwich, as it falls apart easily. However, I don't think this is a great spot for coffee. I was a bit underwhelmed by my latte, which tasted more like thin drip coffee than a rich, strong espresso. I also think they could offer more sweetener options.
