My wife and I are on vacation starting in Berkeley/San Francisco at the time of this review. Let me preface this review by saying that I lived in Berkeley many many years ago in the mid 1990s. The original Zachary's Pizza opened in 1984. Since we both love Chicago deep dish pizza I recommend that we go to Zachary's. Ten years ago Zachary's was fantastic for deep dish pie, very close to Chicago's pies. Sadly that is Not the case now. We ordered a small deep dish with artichokes, mushrooms & very light on the sauce for take out. When we sat down to enjoy our pie we noticed that there were a lot of artichokes on top, there were 2 small pieces of mushrooms and the sauce on the pie was ridiculous. There had to be almost 1" of sauce. The sauce was cloyingly thick, tasting like tomato paste straight from the can. Lastly it tasted like someone dumped a huge amount of black pepper into the sauce. If you're ever in the Berkeley area I suggest you wait and plan a trip to Chicago, Zachary's is not worth your time. read more

I am impressed! I'm from Chicago, I know all things Chicago and Chicago food, especially the pizza. When I saw a place near where I'm in town for work, that promoted their Chicago style pizza, I had to test this out for myself. The place is smaller but cozy, I actually enjoyed this aspect. Our waiter, David was very kind, knowledgeable and quick. Definitely give him a raise. To start, ordered the meatballs. I loved them, seasoned and formed perfectly, they were great. Now the pizza...I ordered a large, half Zachary and half Carne. I didn't try the Carne side, but the Zachary (Italian sausage, onion, mushroom, green peppers, add feta). I really enjoyed this pizza. It almost transported me back to Chicago. The sauce was very hearty and thick (true to style for the deep dish), and seasoned very well. The crust was perfect. This experience made me very happy as I miss Chicago very much and it brought me a little bit of home to me. If you're considering delivery from some less than mediocre place like Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Pizza Guys or Dominoes, think again. What a great place! I have been wanting deep dish pizza and wanting to try Zachary's for quite some time and finally made my way to the place with my family. Zachary's did not disappoint!! The stuffed pizza was absolutely delicious! It had plenty of sauce, cheesy and toppings that were cooked to perfection! The quantity was enough to enjoy at the restaurant and enjoy at home. VEGAN & GLUTEN FREE REVIEW I've written my fair share of reviews for Zach's, so I won't go too in-depth on this one. I just wanted to update my review on their new vegan cheese that they've started to use. I guess they are no longer using Daiya, because at my last visit, the cheese was noticeably different. I asked the waitress what cheese they switched to (because I'm paranoid and don't trust peoples' definitions of vegan) and she said they're now using "Vegan Gourmet Shreds" by Follow Your Heart. I love Follow Your Heart and I know they're vegan, so I gobbled up my pizza, but I have to say I think I prefer Daiya on my pizzas. When Daiya melts, its texture is more cheesy. It also burns a little and gets crunchy which I really like. The Follow Your Heart cheese is more creamy and the mouth feel reminds me of a cream sauce almost. Don't get me wrong - it was really yummy. It just comes down to the texture. read more

We love Zach's pizza. When we used to live in the area, it was a favorite. Now that we don't live in the area, it's a must visit when we are in town. Love the pizza. It is so delicious and satisfying. We had it for dinner and ate leftovers for a few days after. It's one of the only pizzas you can microwave and it's just as tasty, maybe even more. Since The Cheeseboard was closed on Sundays, our group of seven ended up at Zachary's for dinner. I still want to try Cheeseboard sometime, but I'm not complaining -- Zachary's had deep dish pizza, and I haven't had much of it in my life thus far. From the moment you walk in, you can tell that Zachary's is a hotspot - the restaurant isn't that big, but it's packed, and there's a steady stream of people coming in and out for take-out orders. We put our name in and were told the wait would be about an hour, but they would come into the bookstore next door to call us. Thank goodness for that bookstore ... we were able to stay out of the cold and peruse all the used books while we waited. Before we left Zachary's, however, the employee told us to check out the menu and put in our pizza orders beforehand. He said one deep dish took about 40 minutes, and since our group was ordering three pizzas, we narrowed down our selections in the meantime. This proved to be helpful and minimized the waiting time once we actually got our seats. Well, about 1.5 hours after we put our name in, we were finally seated. The party whose table we were waiting for took forever ... and the manager was so nice. He knew our group waited for a long time, so he gave us a round of beers on the house. The tables are really close together, but I think by that time, our group was just so happy to be seated--and starving--that we didn't care about the proximity of the next table. We shared three different pizzas -- two deep dish and one thin crust (create it yourself). Everything we ordered was delicious, and we even had about two slices of each pizza as leftovers. Those deep dish slices definitely fill you up! I would recommend Zachary's if you've never been before, and I did like the pizza a lot. I normally don't like a lot of tomato sauce on my pizza, so for the deep dish ones, I ate some of the tomato sauce and scraped off the rest when it became too much. Just be prepared--mentally and physically--for a long wait, especially if you have a bigger party. Here's what we got: "Spinach and Mushroom": Since this is the pizza Zachary's is well known for, we decided that should be one of our choices. It featured fresh spinach, mushrooms and a blend of three cheeses. I loved the thin layer of spinach, as well as the cheesy layer, and the mushrooms gave the pizza some extra texture and chewiness. The dough was cooked perfectly -- it wasn't super crispy, but I liked it a little doughier and chewier. My friends who had been to Chicago said it wasn't as good as the pizza they had in Chicago, but it sufficed for California and said it was close enough. I really liked this pizza; it was lighter than the other meaty option we got, and it's a good one if you want a "safe" pizza. "Carne": We had a bunch of meat eaters in our group, so naturally, this pizza resulted. It came topped with Italian sausage, pepperoni, salami, chopped bacon and mozzarella. This pizza was hearty and flavorful, but I actually couldn't taste too much of the meat except for the sausage and chopped bacon. The bacon had to be the crowning glory and the most definite ingredient -- it was crispy and the bits on top the pizza were plentiful. The other meats had to be underneath all that tomato sauce I scraped off. I was happy we tried this and I would recommend it to anyone who loves sausage and bacon (those were the two meats I could taste the most of). "Caesar Salad": We started off our meal with two salads. I liked this one better of the two. It was your traditional Caesar, comprising Romaine lettuce tossed with Zachary's Caesar dressing, croutons and aged parmesan. I loved all the cheese that came on the salad, but a handful more of croutons would have made it absolutely perfect. "Create Your Own Pizza": The last pizza we got was a thin crust pizza. One of my friends loves anchovies, so he wanted to make one with anchovies. The thin crust pizza he got comprised tomatoes and anchovies. He said it was yummy, but you definitely had to be an anchovy lover to enjoy this pizza. I was satisfied with the other two deep dish varieties we got. read more

Finally made it in here! And if you haven't been here, put this place on your list and go! We came into this location because we were in the area but I want to believe it's less busy here because I always see a crowd of people waiting at other location but maybe we just got lucky and didn't have to wait a minute here. The staff was very helpful with getting our vegan pizza done right! And don't get me wrong it may be a bit pricey, yes but if I'm going to spend $30+ on a pizza - it's gonna be this pizza! Having lived in the east coast, I tend to compare all of them to NY pizza. I know I won't get the same thing, have tried almost every shop in the Bay area, but I had my hopes. The deep dish is nothing like what I had in Chicago, but it is good pizza. The spinach & mushroom deep dish has a great sauce but it does overpower the spinach a bit. The thin crust super veggie does not have a lot of overpowering flavors but the crust is a little on the harder side comparing to other chain restaurants. I will give a thumbs up for the fresh ingredients. By the way, it takes about 20-30 minutes for the pizza to ge ready after ordering so I suggest call ahead. read more

I loved this place, their spinach and mushroom pizza is the best. I never went there when I was a student at AHS, however, I discovered them about to years later. I also liked the Chorizo Pizza with the chiles and chorizo and jack cheese. It was soooo good. My husband, who hates pizza and eats it to indulge me, likes these two types. The chorizo pizza wasn't as good when it was served Deep Dish style. This one we'd get as a regular pizza. I was a fan, a fan, a fan, however, then my gluten thing hit and I couldn't go back. They have a gluten free crust, however, it's expensive and there are only certain items that are certified gluten free. Unfortunately, there's no deep dish. Unfortunately, the chorizo pizza ingredients aren't certified gluten free - so I was left with black olives, bell peppers, and under-cooked onions as toppings. Yech! Boring and uninspiring. We had the gluten free crust with the chorizo, however, it didn't heat up well the next day and was kind of soggy. Also, we had to get a whole pizza, once size only. They don't have slices. My last visit, we went with a buddy from high school and his wife. Well...? All I had was a salad. That was the only thing I could eat. I watched them dine on pizza while I ate a salad. It was a good salad. But, I really wanted pizza and knew that the option they had would probably disappoint the others at the table. read more

I live in South Bay, so this is a trek for me already, but I had heard such great things about this place so I had to check it out. We got a stuffed pizza off of the Zachary's favorites list, and it was ok but not great. Honestly, I've had much better deep dish pizza before. The crust was pretty flavorless, the ingredients were also pretty flavorless. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. This seems like a really cute neighborhood spot and if I lived nearby I would maybe return to grab a slice occasionally. That being said, I just don't understand what the hype is about. read more

Ordered a carne, Casa Blanca, Zachary special and chorizo . How come all of them taste the same? Lol except the chorizo I see chorizo and Casa Blanca I can taste the garlic but that's about it. First was told to wait for 25 mins then told me that the order wasn't ready so I was told about 4-6 more mins .. then I waited about 10 mins. And finally they forgot my salad. Went back to get my salad then no dressing.. lol then I went back again to get the dressing. Got a small Cesar salad for $5.25 .. what it actual is a super small salad for a price that you can almost get 2 chicken Cesar salad at Costco! Flavor wise... it was good, everything tasted almost the same. Customer service... there were a lot of workers in a super small place, it's was painful to see them working in that environment. First time here. My sister in law is from the area and she recommended the place. Upon walking in the place smells amazing! Our servers were incredibly friendly and attentive. I started by ordering a dry cider which was great. Then three adults shared a Caesar salad which was decent. 3adults & 3kids shared a large deep dish that was half bbq chicken and half pineapple/pep (3 slices left over). Kids loved it I've got to be 100% honest and say I thought it was alright. I don't believe either is their specialty and what's most popular so I would definitely go back and try it again when visiting the next time. read more

It's like someone took Gino's East... transplanted the whole damn place out to the East Bay... took all the writing off the walls, then made everything about the place better. Yes, you read me (the Chicago pizza snob) right. Zachary's is better than the Chicago pizza -in- Chicago. Blasphemy, right? If this is what going to hell is like, put me in a hand basket and slap a UPS barcode on it. Somehow, mystically, when arriving at around 1330 on a Sunday afternoon... we encountered no wait. What? No wait? We were starving. Amazing! Our options being a seat at the back by the kitchen (I don't know that I could have resisted leaping over the counter and stealing some other poor soul's pie if we sat back there) or the very front table by the open window... with the warm sun and a cool 75 degree breeze streaming in. Bet you can figure out where we opted to sit on this early February afternoon... Looking for some quick liquid sustenance while our pies cooked up, I downed a whole pint of Fat Tire. The second one was on its way by the time our two "small" pies arrived. We ordered up the famed Spinach and Mushroom pie, as well as some kind of southwestern chicken thing with salsa and spicy jack cheese. While the spinach pie was solid, with huge fresh leaves of spinach that somehow retained their bright green-ness even after baking, it was the spicy chicken that did it for me. With huge chunks of real tomato on top, and a serious kick enough to make my nose just start to sweat, the satisfying cheesy mess of tender chicken and dairy goodness had my flying high. Or maybe it was the second beer that I'd finished. Eh. While I find that the crust to the pizza here isn't as buttery and flaky as what I'm used to from Chicago deep dish pizzerias, it's kind of nice to have something a little lighter at Zachary's. I managed to plow through a whole three slices, cleaning up every last crumb from my plate. Yep, that's approximately half a pie. I don't think I could have ever done that at Giordano's or Lou Malnati's without tossing some chunks. Either I was -super- hungry, or the pizza at Zachary's is just easier to handle without feeling gross. To all my Chicagoans out there... I send my love, but I'll pass on your pie in favor of warm winter days, knowing that I can have a pizza that's just as good as at home... sans the minus thirty degree windchill. read more
