Zachary's Pizza is probably the best pizza in California (and many other places as well)! With pizza like this, there is no need even for toppings. The simple cheese deep dish pizza is absolutely fantastic. It is thick, about an inch or two of cheese, topped with a delicious sauce of tomatoes (this is not ordinary liquid tomato sauce, but real smashed tomatoes, nicely spiced, and thickly covering the delicious cheese). When removing a slice from the hot pizza pie, the cheese stretches down and can reach several feet in length. The only way to eat this is with a knife and fork. I have a friend who lives on the east coast and when he travels to Asia, he arranges a multi-hour layover at San Francisco Airport, where I pick him up and we go to Zachary's for pizza and then go back in time for his flight. The pizza is that good, that he goes through the trouble to arrange his travel just to get his pizza "fix". The pizza takes about a half hour to cook after your order is taken; this gives you time to enjoy conversation with the people joining you for this fantastic meal. Well worth the wait. The large deep dish stuffed cheese pizza is $22.05 and feeds three very hungry people or four or five ordinary people, where the pizza is complete meal. read more

I enjoyed this place a lot! I came with some fam and ordered two small deep dish pizzas...mushroom and spinach and Carne..root beers on tap and lunch was set. The slices are pretty thick, fresh slices of tomatoes, just the right amnt of gooey cheese, and incredible filling. The service was good too! They sliced and served us. I was full after 3 slices. This place isn't stingy with portions. The shop looks tiny from the outside but the inside is pretty big. Good parking in the neighborhood with free zones. I.will be def coming back! read more

Sure, I would love to be the 1223rd reviewer for Zach's Berkeley! Before I moved to Texas in 2005, one of my "last meals" in the Bay Area was a thin crust chorizo and chile pizza from Zachary's - yep, I knew I'd miss them. In Austin, despite all of the wonderful pizza and other goodies you can find there, the only deep dish pizza is a travesty and Zachary's chorizo pizza, although a thin crust pizza is quite unique. I've been back California for more than six months now and finally got a chance to go to Zachary's. What did I order? Why, a thin crust chorizo and chile pizza thanks! I also ordered a stuffed meatball pizza. The chorizo and chile pizza was a bit different from when I left. The thin crust is no longer actually thin, it is really a medium to thick crust. It is still cornmeal based, which is quite spectacular paired with chorizo and green chile. The sauce tastes super fresh and tomatoey. (Sure that's a word. Shut it.) The chorizo is excellent quality - like homemade Mexican style - meaty, not the grocery store kind that just melts. The chiles are diced green anaheims. The cheese actually tastes like Monterrey Jack. It is supremely melty and delicious. The flavor combo on this is really awesome. The stuffed meatball was one of their seasonal specials. Again, the tomato sauce isdelicious and very fresh tasting with chunks of tomato. The meatballs were ok. I love that this pizza is oozing and melty and juicy. So so good. The wait for my two treasures was about 45 minutes, even though they weren't at all busy and the small chorizo and the medium stuffed pizza came to $44.00 (Not cheap). This place would be perfect, if we hadn't had such a weird waiter. My friend took me here, as I've lived in the Bay Area my whole life, always heard about Zachary's, but never tried it. We went on a brisk Saturday afternoon, and the place was bustling. We decided to share a spinach pizza, and were told it would take about 30 minutes to prepare. I thought that if all of the hype I'd heard was true, the lengthy wait was a small price to pay. When the pizza finally came, the waiter explained that the cheese could be a little hard to detach from the other slices and showed us some trick where he cut the cheese (no pun intended) from the pan. It was kinda cool, but he seemed on edge. The pizza itself was SO DELICIOUS! I could barely finish my second slice, and my friend formidably tried to finish all three of his slices only making it through half of the third one. Zachary's was my first experience with deep-dish pizza and I have to say that I will definitely be coming back if I visit Berkeley again. Although it is a bit of a wait to order deep-dish, having good company makes the time fly by. The waitress was bubbly and very friendly and regarding service alone, this place deserves 5/5 stars. The deep-dish pizza was quite the experience -- at first I saw other patrons using a fork and knife to tackle their slices and I thought to myself, "why are people using utensils?" But when our pie arrived, I realized exactly why. The pizza was extremely filling -- I typically eat a lot but I was pretty satisfied after eating a slice and a half. The crust was delicious and it felt like there was a ton of toppings on it because the pizza was so thick. I'm glad I didn't use my hands or I would have made a gigantic mess. read more

Came on a Sunday night and waited 45 minutes to seat seven. Luckily, we can place an order while waiting, which is a huge time saver! If you're looking for any healthy excuse to eat pizza, come here! It's very veggie-ful, has a TON of tomatoes, not too much cheese (yes, it's the opposite of the overwhelming pool of cheese on Cheeseboard/Sliver), and it's filling enough that you'll be satisfied with one slice and you don't have to feel like a fatty eating 2 slices of pizza. My complaints: I don't know if it's just me, but it tastes pretty salty, to the point that it's tarnishing a potential 5-star review. Also, the location isn't the most convenient and it's usually crowded. I've done take-out before where you finish baking it at home, but it's hard to tell when it's done. Zachary's Chicago Pizza is a staple for me. I eat pizza from different places, but Zachary's continues to trump them all. Unfortunately it's not as local for me as I'd like it to be. But if you're out in Berkeley and you want to grab a slice of life? Make sure you stop by for a taste of real pizza. Where everyday pizza are shamed on the alter that is Zachary's. The customer service is not always the best, mainly because of how busy it is. But if you want to wait 20 or 30 minutes for the best pizza pie of your life; look no further. They have a decent beer selection too. If you're an avid beer drinker they have everything you want. If you're one of those beer snobs, they might not be the best in the world but they will take care of you in a pinch. Bring your family and bring your friends... But most of all, bring your appetite. Best pizza ever, for the reviews that gave low marks clearly their experiences were anomalies. Don't waste your time with the thin crust, deep dish is the only way to go! Also, spinach and mushroom is truly fabulous. Since my family and me have been going here for 30 years we have tried hundred of variations over the years. O e year we would add pesto to the spinach mushroom, another year our kick was simply pepperoni. We also,return to the spinach and mushroom. The service is great for the most part. Every now and again you will get an uppity hipster at the register on a busy night that is short with you...but other than that all is great. Go and enjoy. You will not be disappointed. read more

That way by the time we would be seated the pizza would be done and ready for us to eat. We ordered the Spinach and Mushmoon deep dish pizza. I couldn't wait, I was so hungry. We waited for a seat, it was about 30-45 minutes. We all thought that since it had been that long that our food would come out right away, but it didn't. It seemed like forever, but it was maybe 10-15 minutes later and the pizza arrived. The pizza was yummy. The sauce on top had chunks of tomato in it. The spinach and mushrooms mixed well with the flavors of the tomato sauce. The crust has a good taste as well. It isn't one that you'd want to leave there to throw away. I was in town for a band practice and I was thinking now would be the best time to try Zachery's. Ive only tried Patxi's deep dish before trying Zachery's. I ordered the equivalent of the combo pizza, medium, $29 to go. The first thing that hit me was the sauce. pizza isn't hard to make, have your dough, fresh toppings, and sauce, and you're good to go. But i think Zachery's money is in their sauce. it's not like any other pizza sauce i've had before, and i think the fresh produce helps. I don't know how to describe it other than it's very fresh and delicious. the toppings were fresh and pizza crust is not greasy and my husband and i were very pleased with the overall taste. in this neighborhood, things are expensive. so a medium pizza with tax is $29. That number may be small or high for you. I am glad i've tried it and i was pleased but the $29 kinda made me wince. I'm so used to eating pizza's around $20 for the same portions, so I would not drive all the way from san jose for this pizza. i can save the gas and go to Patxi's. But i believe Zachery's is a "must try" if you live in the bay area. read more

This is the Solano Ave location. People come from cities afar for their deep dish pizza. Nice local brews on tap too (Fieldworks for one). Fun atmosphere with paintings by locals on the walls (including local kids) Wonderful service and hey, it's employee-owned! Be prepared to walk far--parking is terrible. My very first time trying Chicago style pizza! I wasn't necessarily looking forward to this moment because I did not think I would enjoy deep dish pizza, as I'm a diehard fan of thin crust pizzas. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite into the Carne pizza. I can't see any meat on it, but that is what it was, a meat pie, a damn delicious meat pie. I had the Zachary's special as well, and was equally impressed. The flavor is there, and oh man I love the tomatoes. Thinking of that night makes me drool.. One complaint I would make is how hard the crust is. It was difficult to bite into and I saw some of my buddies leave their crust alone (not eat it). I am a crust lover, so it makes no sense to leave it alone. It is also really meant to be eaten with a knife and fork as it is a mess with your hands, but the crust being hard made it difficult to cut into! Their service was great, and I love how they provided the pies for both tables my party had (we were 12 people large). Portion is ridiculously large, one slice makes me pretty full but I went in for a second one! Always a plus is that they provide cheese and red pepper toppings... These are must on my pizzas! As much as it pains me to write this review- and I am not a serial Yelper like Randy in Southpark. I have been eating Zachary's for about 30 years and after tonight I am done. I found a glass shard -Clear- in my Pizza. I bit into it and thought it was a rock or bone , I wish it was either. Zachary's refunded which is protocol but I found a glass shard in my pizza! Glass! I have a 2 year old that was eating next to me things could have gone completely south from here. I love this pizza but this was not a chicken bone as I have found those before but a piece of glass! I enjoyed observing them as we waited for our pizzas to be made, which did take some time. Thankfully, we arrived before 7 pm and didn't have to wait very long for a table. Service was friendly, and the waiter even served us our first slices of pizza. We ordered: Zachary's Special thin pizza--A delicious savory combination of sausage, green bell peppers, cheese, mushrooms, and onions on a (overly) crunchy crust. There was a lot of flavor packed in every bite, especially when a sausage chunk was a part of it. Spinach & Mushroom stuffed pizza--Very filling and very tomato-y vegetarian pizza. I watched my roommate eat one thick slice and stop to save room for dessert. I generally am not super impressed by pizza, but Zachary's pizzas are pretty tasty.
