Great dinner spot for sushi! Zen is very a small restaurant, but the atmosphere is upscale and inviting. I ordered an Ahi Tuna Tower (not on the menu) and a Supernova roll. Both dishes were EXCELLENT! The Supernova was super filling, but it was absolutely decadent and mind-blowingly delicious. I would recommend ordering one and splitting it with a friend. Trust me, you will not be disappointed! The drinks were also fantastic and fresh. Prices here are not cheap, but they are in line with what you would expect from other restaurants in the area. I love the Bishop Arts District and had my eye on Zen Sushi for long time. I finally had dinner at Zen last month and was pretty excited after reading about the owner's background. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed with the food. The chicken lettuce wraps were tasty but I didn't think the radicchio leaf cups worked very well. The summer roll was described as fried but had a very strange texture, almost like it was baked. The fried California roll didn't taste fresh and the avocado was already brown. The spider roll was just ok but the Asian slaw was very fresh. I'm sure the location is a big plus and pulls in a lot of local fans. As for me, next time I'm driving just a few more minutes up the road (Uptown Dallas area) for excellent sushi every time at some of my favorite places. read more

We usually order delivery but regardless of whether we order online or over the phone or in the restaurant, we have been fully satisfied with the quality of the food, the price, and the customer service. We are fortunate to have a sushi restaurant that celebrates the fish rather than cover it with sauces. They have a wide selection of rolls and everything we've tried has been solid. We went in on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered two rolls that came out to $24.50 with out tip. It was a little pricy for us but the food was amazing, but better then that the customer service was just out of this world. Our waitress saw that I wAs 8 months pregnant and recommended the rolls that would be save for me to have. Even made hand squeezed lemonade for me cuz I didn't want anything on the menu. My wife and I go to Zen every week. We are sushi freaks and have tried EVERY sushi place in Dallas. Zen beats them hands down. The closest is Little Katana. The Yellowtail tuna is the best I have ever had - ever. Seattle, NYC, Tokyo, LA - the best ever is at Zen. ** Order the Sakura roll and the California Sun roll. These stand out in the crowd. *** Finally, the pomegranate mojito's are like liquid crack. Drink three of these, eat some fantastic sushi, and you will go home with a new lease on life. I happened on with Zen Sushi on the soft opening of their Sunday brunch. Since I only occasionally visit Dallas, I've never been before. I was impressed. The soft opening brunch was a limited menu, but there were 4-5 items to suit most palates. We were presented with a couple of small slices friendship cake to start - and it was an auspicious beginning - substantial, like a rum cake, but light and decidedly not filling - a great sweet, teasing prelude to brunch. We were cautioned at the time that this was a soft opening for the brunch and there might be a few glitches as they dialed in both the service and the food offerings. They needn't have worried. I was having trouble picking among the available drinks (sadly, the wines by the glass were rather limited) when our waiter helpfully suggested the Full Sail Black Lager. I've had several black lagers and I've enjoyed most of them, but the Full Sail captured the rosary character I was looking for while remaining much lighter than the others I've tried. That roasted goodness turned out to be a good balance to the sweetness of our main course. My dining partner chose the ginger-orange mimosa which didn't work quite as well with the sweetness to come, but was delicious when sampled as we scanned the menu and disappeared quickly after the meal. We both opted for the waffles with blueberry pepper syrup - one order with fried chicken rolled in panko breading and the other with oven-baked maple bacon. There was real potential for heavy, cloying sweetness here, but it was skillfully averted via the light, fluffy waffles and the blueberry syrup tempered but the merest hint of pepper. The pepper gave flavor, but no heat and cut the sugary nature of the syrup nicely. The fried panko-breaded chicken continued that lightness, with crisp, moist flavor and virtually no hint of fry grease. My dining partner noted that it would help to have a small dish to hold the syrup for dipping the chicken (it was that good), mentioned it to the waiter and we had one on the table promptly. Of course, the bacon was hardly light, but was a suitably robust counterpoint to the waffles. The chef (I assume that was the owner, Michelle Carpenter) came out after our meal to see how things went and sincerely asked if we had any suggestions. We mentioned the only real item for improvement (the dipping dish) and asked a few questions about how things were prepared. She was friendly, gracious and appreciative. I initially only gave four stars, but with the quality of the food and the responsiveness of the service, I just couldn't find a good reason to deny a five - so 5 stars it is. We were only the second table seated in the restaurant, but I doubt that many of the usual crowd were even aware of the brunch plans. I suspect that this brunch will take off quickly once the faithful learn about it. You might want to make reservations now for next Sunday. read more

My wife & I went here cause we love sushi and we live blocks away. The flavors of everything were wonderful but the portions were so small. We had 4 rolls (average price) 2 soups and 1 cocktail and we spent $70. This wouldn't be so bad but i left still hungry and we aren't huge eaters. This is the best restaurant in Dallas to get sushi. And it doesn't hurt that it's in close proximity to my house. My family and I go here all the time. The quality and freshness of the fish is impeccable. The waitstaff is extremely knowledgeable of the menu items (which can be hard to find in any restaurant), very friendly and made every dinner here a good one. Oh, and the lunch menu is wonderful. You can get so much food for such a reasonable price. So if your not a sushi fan, I suggest you try lunch here, the beef bento box is my fave...well, maybe the yakisoba, no the fried rice...ok, I like it all! Keep up the good work Michelle! read more

This place is in the top-tier of sushi restaurants in Dallas. It is up there with Tei Tei, just a larger space and no two-hour wait on a Friday night. Of the special "Michelle's Creations" rolls, I was a big fan of the Volcano Roll (scallops on top of a California roll). The scallops were fresh and the roll was tasty. And our group ordered a good number of the Maki rolls which were excellent, and almost all of them were under $8 each. The shrimp tempura roll had to be the best of the group. As for drinks, I will say that my "Dirty Goose" martini (at $12) was below what I expect in a martini. But they did have a good filtered sake bottle (for $15) that was easy to enjoy (and pay for). Bonus tip: Monday nights are half-price sushi and I hear all the cool kids are there on that night. read more

Decent food, although I've only had the rolls. If you like a good, strong spicy roll try their Dragon Roll with *crazy* spicy tuna. Open late. Great location in bishop arts, although parking can be a challenge, but there is valet. Can also order for takeout, there is a nice spot to sit and wait near the back. read more

Nice small, modern, sophisticated, boutique style sushi restaurant. I Really liked the flavors in the rolls and really enjoyed the tasty drinks. However! The drinks are great and tasty but small, over priced and have too much filler (fruit and stuff). The rolls were tasty, but very small portions and over priced. I have been to several sushi places all around and most I am able to fill up on two rolls. My husband and I shared 4 rolls and miso soup and were still hungry shortly after! :/ The rolls are only about 4 pieces each when other places I have been to are at least 6 pieces. Doesn't look like it will be a regular sushi place for me... I can't afford it. Makes me sad because I really enjoy supporting local places... read more

I am a Sushi addict, I love it and before moving to Dallas would have Sushi 3-4 times a week. I've had really good Sushi and I've had really terrible Sushi. Sadly Zen Sushi falls somewhere in between good & bad, there really isnt anything special about Zen Sushi. I had a couple of the recommended rolls and they were o.k. nothing special and I had a couple of the Sashimi pieces and they were ok as well. Their signature cocktails were yummy but all in all I think Zen Sushi is a little over-priced for what you are getting. I dropped close to a 100 bucks for a meal for two and didnt really feel happy about it...the experience wasnt too pleasant for me. (I am trying to ignore the fact that there was a newborn crying the entire time I was there and a two year old playing with her food two tables down from me. I am trying not to hold this against you Zen Sushi) I didnt appreciate the fact that I spent so much $$$ and was annoyed most of the meal, I know that isnt your fault but oh well all in all something should have been said to that couple with their whiney ass kids. So overall if you are in the neighborhood and you are craving Sushi stop by and give them a shot, its not bad just a bit overpriced. Hopefully your experience will be alot better than mine was. Let me start off by saying I wanted to like this place. I was looking for a good sushi place in the area to take a date, and this was the only option without going into downtown Dallas. I went so far as to make a reservation in case it was going to be busy (this was a Tuesday evening). We show up, the place is nice, the waiter is polite. The place has an upscale feel without being snooty. The rolls come, the presentation is great. On a side note, I've eaten a whole lot of sushi, i know what it should taste and feel like; also ive rarely ever had sushi I didn't like. This, sadly, was one of those times. We ordered two rolls, one was a house roll, can't remember the name. That one was downright bad to me. The second one was a shrimp roll. This wasnt quite as bad as the first, in fact it was kind of good. But something about it was off, and it didn't taste quite as good as others had. We went to Zen last night and enjoyed it. While it wasn't the best sushi we have ever had, it was good. We started with an order of edamame, hot sake, and Sapporo. The edamame was good as it tasted just like edamame! :) For dinner we ordered three rolls: the Dragon, Zen roll, and the Alaskan Roll. Beware, the spicy mustard in the Dragon roll is HOT. It is really tasty though if you like heat. The Zen roll comes with a slice of thin lime on the top. We took off the lime because it overpowered the roll, and we found the roll was flavored with the right amount of lime once it was taken off. The Alaskan Roll was also good. The smoked salmon int it was extra good. All in all, Zen is a neat place to check out. I don't have anything bad to say about it. It didn't blow me away, but it was good. The service was good, the sushi was fresh, the atmosphere is cozy, yet trendy, and the location is really fun. We walked around all of the shops before eating. read more

This place has some of the best sushi I have had! The Xalapa roll was amazing (according to my meat eating friend) and the California moon (with fresh jalapeños added) WAS THE BEST. They have of veggie options! In fact they have an entire veggie menu which is always a big plus for me! Came here 3yrs ago & so glad I was able to come back. They have some of the freshest sushi in the Dallas area! This is a unique sushi place w/ an Asian twist. Perfect place to try something new, you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Miso soup is a bigger portion than what you're used to, which I love that. They serve it in a nice ceramic bowl vs one of the tiny plastic ones. The seaweed salad is also a nice portion. With the seaweed you also get carrots, beets & radish which is a great combination all together. Small, clean & modern place. They do take reservations and walk-ins. I'll be back again! read more
