For much of my post college days, I worked in Davis and went to Zia's often. I enjoy supporting local businesses, and Zia is a classic sandwich place in Davis. Price is a little higher than typical sandwich places, but you get better quality breads and meats. The Lucca is my favorite, and they have great gelato, candies, and chocolates. Sometimes the wait can be a while during lunch hours, but the service is always friendly. Enjoy! read more

Calling all calling all BIPOC Queer members of the Davis Downtown delicatessen is deli-disgusting the customer service is lacking to the point with this company. No allergy food substituting since the manager confirms their sandwiches are premade for walk-ins. As for their online ordering services seems to preoccupy their precious minds. I would recommend not going here ever unless they install self pay kiosks and continue about their rudeness towards customers and the ambiance is mediocre. Understand if your into standing around being ignored and after ordering standing around for hours as long as your into waiting hours for a deli sandwich then by all means enjoy yourself. Otherwise warning to customers that are apart of the Queer BIPOC community my wife and I have tried giving this place a chance on three separate occasions and not once were we acknowledge, until I speak up to the six staff members behind the counter. Then after the second visit finally ordered and waiting for over hour only to find out that the sandwiches were forgotten about. Then we seen the Caucasian consumers get comp money back for their waiting. But we were still required to accept a bill for our waiting period, then on our third visit this location in downtown Davis had to audacity to have their manager explain the sandwiches were premade and no substitutions are allowed. So why did you make the majority of the BIPOC POC consumers wait hours. Then your staff only have blank empty stares past our existence's. When I address appalling service and lack of communication with the staff they just look like deer to headlight. Please don't waste your time and resources on this nonsense. My first Zia's experience was just OK. Friendly, but inefficient, service. Servers do not write down the orders. I noticed when the prep was nearly complete that my sandwiches were not on the bread I requested. They re-made the sandwiches, transferring the insides to new bread, but it seems like a lot of mistakes could be avoided if orders were written down (or if slips were available for customers to select their desired options). When we finally did get our order, my sandwich was just OK. I had the toscana (salame, provolone, pepperoncini, oil and vinegar). The flavors were good, but the bread-to-filling ratio was off (too much bread). Their potato salad, which we ordered on the side, was quite nice. I'd return to Zia's if the craving for an Italian sub strikes again and I want something local, but if distance is not an issue, it's off to Corti Brothers in Sacramento. read more

We were looking for a lighter lunch and Zia's exactly fit our mood. Inside, it's sort of an Italian market, with a variety of sandwiches, cold dishes, drinks, desserts, etc. We got two sandwiches and sat outside. The food was high quality and tasty. The only thing missing for me was some sort of spice. I should've asked if they could put hot peppers on my sandwich; I bet they would have. Next time... Walked in to here one day with hubby and decide to pick up a sandwich for me for my lunch for the next day.. It was about 10 minutes to close, and we felt really bad that we were coming so late, but the worker there said it was OK for us to order even though they had cleaned up everything.. I had ordered a Siena Sandiwch which comes with Rosemary prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella, basil, oil and vinegar on a ciabatta roll.. I had to customize my sandwich because I wasn't eating any gluten, so I had it lettuce wrapped and I'm lactose intolerant so no cheese but I did double the meat.. Even though the sound sound like much but it was really for sandwich and they give you quite a bit to eat, it's a great quality cheese and meat.. The employees are very courteous and very helpful to any questions you have about the menu.. They also have other grocery items to sell that are Italian influence and they even have gelato there.. We ordered two Viareggios with extra mayo via DoorDash. This has been our go-to order every time we get food from here since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The sandwiches always taste good, but for some reason, this time they decided to put in an extra $0.54 charge for each sandwich. I did not receive any notification from Zia's as to why there were extra charges after I had already paid on the app. In fact, I would not have known about the extra charges if it was not for the DoorDash email notification. The sandwiches were done the same way every time and they have always been $9.50 (as shown in DoorDash app). It is kind of shady to just add on charges afterwards without telling the customer, even though it was only $0.54 per sandwich. I could care less about the $0.54 (x2); it is a matter of principle. If they wanted to charge extra for the additional regular mayo I asked for (which they have never done before during the entire duration of the pandemic, because I always asked for extra regular mayo every time), they could have at least called and ask if it was ok to charge extra. (Side note: honestly, is an extra layer of mayo worth $0.54?) From now on, I think it would be safer to just add my own mayo on when I get home, in case they decide to add a couple more zeros to their price for extra regular mayo. P.S. Be careful if you customize your order via DoorDash; there were two times when we paid $2.00 per sandwich to add avocado (which amounts to about a quarter of an avocado), both times our sandwiches came without the avocado that we paid for ($4.00 total each time). read more

Zia's catered my graduation party 7 years ago and I've never had a bad experience since. I am in love with their Asiago pasta and the Luca is my go to sand which. I love going in and seeing how busy they are. They have good chip and drink selections as well. I have yet to try their desserts I think the fridge but one day I will. I have to say these are stand up people. I use to work for a business that sold their sandwiches and the people who work with us getting our orders ready/delivered were just the kindest people. I honestly hate myself for not trying this place until my last year of college!!! I've heard about how amazing it was from my friends but I just didn't think a sandwich place in Davis would live up to the hype.. and BOY WAS I WRONG! I remember taking a bite of my sandwich and instantly regretting not trying this place earlier. The sandwiches are SOOO GOOD - the ingredients are so fresh and everything on the sandwich just goes so perfectly with each other. After eating it that day, I've come back so many times already because I crave it so much! The one thing that stands out to me about this place is their pesto-mayo. Make sure to get in on your sandwich if it doesn't already come with it :) My go-to order is the Viareggio on a soft roll (this bread is amazing too!!!). I definitely recommend it if you like turkey. It's a simple yet amazingly delicious, fresh-tasting sandwich. I usually replace the mozzarella with provolone but that's just a personal preference; the sandwich tastes amazing no matter what. The Lucca is another popular sandwich here - I personally have never tried it, but my friend gets it all the time and he loves it! I think I've used the word 'amazing' one too many times in this review but I honestly just don't know how else to describe Zia's. Nice, fresh tasting sandwiches. I had the Viareggiano aka turkey pesto. It was simple but the turkey tasted like real meat as opposed to the processed stuff and there was lots of it. I would have liked to find some veggies like tomato & onion but most of the menu choices were meat-oriented. I suppose I should have customized. The REAL winner of the meal was my honey vanilla cream soda. The Wisconsin crafted soda was out of this world foodie goodness and I don't usually mess with sodas. Stopped in this place after a quick yelp search for a good sandwich shop. We ordered 4 different deli sandwiches and they were all great. The rolls were perfect. Light and delicious but substantial enough to hold the sandwich together. There's nothing worse than a bread sandwich with a trash roll. The meat and fix-in's were all fresh and delicious. The staff was super nice and helpful with helping us make a decision on what to order. The place itself was clean and nice. Zia's is the best sandwich you are going to get anywhere and believe me I've been everywhere. I love the viaragio. (Hooked on phonics speller here) My kids always take their college friends there when they come to Davis. Anne and Kevin are wonderful people who take pride in their business and it shows by the quality and longevity of the deli. Talk about quality meats! This place has some of the most fresh and scrumptious meats I have had the pleasure of biting into. Small charge ($.45) for using a card for a purchase that is less than $2. Sandwiches range from $6.25 for basic make it your own sandwiches to $6.95 for a panini. They also have a range of other food like potato salad (yum), fruit salad, cooked meats, and desserts (lots of baked, lots of candy, lots of italian ice cream treats like bomba's and frozen cannolis in addition to their 4 flavor choices of gelato). I have had their torta and coffee chocolate chip gelato both were good. The coffee chocolate chip was exceptional since it taste just like coffee with lots of shaved chocolate chips in it. Although, I love coming to Zia's on a hot day to eat a fresh Viareggio (turkey, smoked mozzarella cheese, pesto mayonnaise, lettuce and tomatoes) or a Lucca (turkey, prosciutto, monterey jack cheese, lettuce and tomato) my favorite and most ordered sandwich is the hot, steamily good meat ball sub. I even get it on a hot day sometimes. Nothing can get in the way of a hungry girl and her meatballs hehe. It comes with 3 very big meatballs. I usually ask for only 2 meatballs and have them cut in half to better bite taking ability. Being that Zias has prime customer service, they pack the 3rd meatball for you so you get your moneys worth. I did take up the cashiers on their ravioli recommendation but it did not sit well and caused my introduction to Gas-X strips if you catch my drift here. A very small shop that I recommend for a lunch date but it is risky as there are only two two seater tables inside and about 4 outside. Zia's will be one of the places I miss most when I leave Davis. Definitely my go to place in town to get a sandwich. A Milano with sun dried tomato spread is probably my favorite sandwich ever, though you really can't go wrong with any of the options on the menu. They're really generous about the meat/fillings in each one and the price is fair considering the quality and authenticity. Service is always nice and friendly, the vibe in here is that of a typical mom and pop shop, and it makes you feel good about supporting a small business. They do have a small section where they sell European dry and canned goods such as pasta, cookies, olive oil, and the like. I've been told this place had the best sandwiches, and I've always loved a good sandwich. The reviews my friends and other people left added to the excitement, so I finally decided to try it. Being in Davis for a while, I've never noticed this place, small little deli restaurant. The viareggio seem to be a heavy favorite here, so that's exactly what I got. It did not disappoint! I'm not a big fan of turkey, but it tasted great in this sandwich! They give you a good amount of meat, unlike other places they give you 2 slices. The veggies were fresh, and the bread, soft. I created my own ham and cheese sandwich. The sandwich toppings included mayo, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, and tomato. The bread was good and easy to chew into, and the ingredients completed the package. Though Zia's is an Italian deli, they should have regular, cheap-ish bottled water. Instead, they only have "fancy" San Benedetto bottled water. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of their Black and Whites. Ordered a Siena panini and a number of customers after me got their sandwiches, including a Siena Panini before me. Finally I had to ask where it was and they said it will come right up. A hidden gem here in Davis! This is not subway, Mr.Pickles, or any of the chain sandwich shops that most people are used to. The bread they use here tastes freshly baked with quality deli-meat cuts and fresh ingredients. I was very happy with my sandwich order of the Milano. It came with salami, ham, cheese, tomato, lettuce, mayo & mustard and I also added bacon. Very reasonably priced, and just tasted so great. You can really taste the ingredients in the sandwich and quality cuts of meat versus subway where they drown their subs in fancy sauces. Very good! Dear Management/Owners: while your sandwiches are quite tasty, I find myself discouraged when I order as I can't ever get a reasonable answer to this lingering issue I keep encountering - nothing can go on the panini press other than the 3(?) sandwiches listed on the panini list. ... Why? ... I'm given various reasons that don't add up. I'm told "because the grill won't fit all sandwiches", yet I'm told the sandwiches are all the same size. "They take time to cook and it would back up the line if we put every sandwich on the grill per request", yet if every customer ordered from the panini list they would all get grilled. We go round and round until we reach Mom and Dad's favorite: "because that's our rule" yet so far you haven't said any REAL reason why my sandwich is forbidden from going on the panini press. You list sandwiches for sale. I order one. I want it grilled, but it is not eligible for such adornment. Tell me why and I will come back. Until then, ciao goes my patronage. read more

I was recommended Zia's a couple times by various people and during a longer lunch break, decided it would be a good chance to see what the fuss was all about. It's a really cute sandwich shop on top of an interesting place to see their Italian desserts and candy selection. I ordered the Vegetarian Panini with Eggplant and Spinach and they had already run out of the bread that was listed - so they substituted another instead. I waited for about 15 min and it was enough time for me to check out their candy, etc. I was so hungry I most of it by the time I got back (hence the almost fully eaten panini picture). The Panini was Good/Okay. The bread was delicious and the eggplant was soft not chewy but everything was overpowered by their balsamic vinaigrette that they used. Maybe next time I will ask them to put less on.. Otherwise I'm curious to see what their other sandwiches taste like and hope I enjoy the next one much more. read more
