After *4 failed delivery attempts to the Holiday Inn , I resorted to walk next door to Zingo's and order take out. I was greeted by a super sweet waitress who took my order in no time. The veggie burger combo was tasty! I was told its not a big seller, but I would recommend it :) I also had a delicious slice of banana cream pie. The food is simple and good. Diner food done right. * By 4 I mean 4. I called several different "'delivery" places only to be told " we don't deliver after 2pm", " we don't deliver to houses or hotels", " we don't deliver dessert" and " we only deliver some of our menu items". I came here when I had a little time in Bakersfield while waiting for an appointment based on their reviews on yelp. Well how dissappointed was I? This is like a truck stop diner and I'm more of a diners, drive-ins and dives kind of girl. I decided to stay and try the food because, hey, it might be great! It wasn't. It was everything you would expect from a truck stop diner. Salty, greasy and inedible. I ate less than 30% of my plate before I just gave up and left. I believe that I ordered the corned beef hash, not that it matters much, I think anything off the menu would have come out the same. I tried to at least fill myself up with toast and jam, because how could that go wrong right? Wrong, it can, they slater on about a stick of butter on two pieces of toast and it just seemed artery clogging to try and eat it. If I could give half stars I would give it a 3 1/2(I wish we could give half stars). The food is solid diner food, great biscuits and gravy, patty melts, pancakes, anything with eggs, or whatever you want. It's open 24 hours, I would suggest visiting during the day as there can be some drunken riff raff here during the late hours(unless you like that sort of crowd). Sometimes the service can be a bit lacking. They've been open a long time and a lot of the same customers frequent this place, it must be doing something right. read more

We were driving from Death Valley to the coast in early 3/02 and were thrilled to come upon Zingo's late that evening. We had one of their daily specials, which included a humongous amount of tasty food for very little money. The service was good, too. Zingo's is a big place and it looked like a throwback to the late fifties/early sixties. Come here for breakfast if you haven't got a clue 'bout Bako. We popped in somewhere in Downtown and bolted. We just didn't want to go there. We met a woman who said she liked Zingo's for pancakes. We ordered the biscuits and gravy. They will tell you to order the biscuits and gravy but it's a bit like paste. It wasn't my kind of gravy. The sausage patties kick ass and they do a good job scramblin' the eggs...hashbrowns were inoffensive. If you like them well done then use your grownup out loud voice. Just ask. Just come here for breakfast. It's as good as it gets until I'm proven wrong next time. Need new suggestions, perhaps? It's kitschy and the tables are entertaining things to read. read more

Sometimes you just wander around in circles, trying to figure out what you are doing, and where you are going. Pretty much sums up my visits to Bakersfield. So I stay at Choice hotels, which always has continental breakfast. Which is nice, or would be if they wouldn't always run out of breakfast items before their guests get a chance to eat. Most of the time I just skip breakfast, which technically isn't a great move because we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But that's just how it is sometimes. Like yesterday, when I had to get out early for an sales call, and didn't have time to stop for a bite to eat. I made the call, and didn't have anything else scheduled for a while, so i decided to find a place to eat. Now, I've been driving up and down Buck Owens Blvd for seems like years. I always pass this place, and the parking lot is always full. so you know, you can tell a good truck stop if the place is always busy. It turns out however that the parking lot is always full because there is a bar behind the restaurant. Anyway, it has the "look" that I like. Kind of a divey, down on it's luck look. You know, seedy. What the heck, let's give it a shot. Inside it's okay. Gotta love the 60's wood paneling. The service was attentive, the coffee okay and never ran out. They even had homemade biscuits which is always a plus. I order the usual bacon and eggs, hash browns, and biscuit and it's all good. Almost. The biscuit is more of a dinner roll type then a biscuit type which is a bit of a disappointment. Anyway, the experience was okay, the meal was filling, and they have a huge menu that includes both chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. You gotta love that. I give it three biscuits. Wow, I was a bit taken aback when I walked in Zingo's. I guess I should have read the reviews more carefully. Despite the "rough and tough" vibe to this popular breakfast spot, the service was friendly and the food was pretty good! My ortega omelet was big, piping hot, and filled with ortega chilis and cheese! Very tasty. I prefer a slightly healthier meal, but hey, it's all right to splurge once in a while. The biscuits and gravy, according to my husband, did not meet up to the hype of the other reviewers. He said the gravy was just not chunky enough. I have come here since I was a kid, from casual outings to business meetings alongside my father. Deb and Gil know how to keep customers coming back! Favorite dishes: Chicken Fried Steak Biscuits and gravy Waffles Surprisingly, their chile verde is good! Cheeseburger and fries! Prime Rib! Cold Turkey and Chese sandwhich (I think that's a whole turkey stuffed in the sandwhich!) The even better thing is that Zingos is open 24 hours, and with cheaper and better food than Denny's, this is a favorite of mine. The only thing I do miss is the fact that there was more parking for the truckers. I'm sure that has hurt their business somewhat since the truckers don't have a place to park to get take-out or eat in the cafe. The parking can get crazy too since there's limited parking. Be aware, this place can get noisy, so if you're not tolerable to noise, stay away and leave the good food for the rest of us! read more

I love this sorta diner! Super friendly servers, and a busy family place. I just ordered the basic bacon and eggs breakfast. Perfect over medium cooked eggs, and soft bacon, just as i ordered..... BUT... i'm knocking them down a star for the hash browns. I like the shredded versions, but theirs seemed to be more like mashed potatoes with a bit of shred, vs ones that flake apart when you use a fork. Best pancakes in Bakertucky.... Whenever we visit town we have to go to Zingo's for pancakes. Was in there Sunday morning, sat at the counter, ordered coffee & my breakfast (pancakes...in case you wondered)...the staff were friendly & attentive, less than 10 mins after I ordered, my breakfast arrived...Pancakes (I see a theme here) scrambled eggs, sausage & toast. I found Zingo's while waiting for a family member to finish some testing at a nearby hospital. I have been back 2 or 3 times after that. Zingo's is pretty much your typical greasy spoon diner. They have a decent sized menu, the serving sizes are generous, and the food is tasty. Price range is comparable to a Denny's or similar restaurant. So far I have tried: -The Chicken Fried Steak w/ Biscuits and Gravy -The BBQ Beef Sandwich w/ Chili Cheese Fries -Ham&Cheese Omelet -French Toast -Cheese Burger Everything has been really good so far, but I'm partial to the BBQ beef. The place is fairly clean, and seems like it has been around for awhile. It seems like they have a large local clientele and I feel a bit out of place eating there, but for the price and food quality I don't care. I live about 2 hours away, but I'm in Bakersfield quite often, so I'm sure I'll be back. It's worth mentioning that there is a bar onsite (separated from the restaurant, but in the same building). I don't drink anymore, but having a bar co-located with this type of food would have been a huge bonus in my younger days. read more

What a great find! I when there just needing to grab a quick breakfast to go and was very pleasantly at what I found. The crowded parking lot was the first sign of good things to come. I ordered breakfast burritos. I got the standard one. I think they called it a meat lover. It had ham bacon and sausage. I ordered a second for someone with dietary restrictions. The server was very patient and helpful in putting together a special order. Both we outstanding: two of the best breakfast burritos I can remember. The one that was ordered off the menus could not have been improved upon: not at all dry, not greasy, flavorful, the right ratio of ingredients... perfect! The place is not fancy in fact it is a bit run down looking. But the food makes it a must visit spot on our next trip to Bakersfield. . read more

Zingos is the place to go for a down home, I know everybody, they know what I want, family atmosphere. They are where I sneak to at 4 in the morning when I have a its not breakfast time, but I cant sleep, and Im hungry hankerin' for some biscuits and gravy. You may not wanna go in around 2 am because the bar crowd has found this place to be a great place to go when the bars close down and it gets very busy. I was unexpected happy with this cafe. It is old fashioned and located right next to my hotel. I was by myself, just before a dog rescue far from home. I wanted a good hot sandwich. I love dives, but they have to have good food. Zingos is a high end dive and has good food. The characters, both customers and wait people, at Zingos are straight out of Central Casting. They are homespun, straight forward and friendly. The food is not haute cuisine, but you don't go to a place like Zingos for their sauces and presentation. You go for a good home style meal. The biscuits are real biscuits, not dinner rolls. I can only assume that the previous reviewer who complained that the biscuits were like dinner rolls, got a dinner roll by mistake or doesn't know what a biscuit is. Biscuits and cream gravy are a staple at Zingos. For folks in Bakersfield, many of whom hale from the midwest, this is manna from heaven. If you don't have a palate for cream gravy, give it a pass. The homemade soups are also quite a treat. The vegetable beef soup, split pea, and clam chowder rival my own. I have never been charged for a refill on drinks. Never. The prices on the menu are reasonable. The service is good. The atmosphere is interesting. You'll see people from every walk of life, from business suit attired to street leathers. Fun stuff! Went here for the first time. We had pancakes, chicken Fried steak, a breakfast burrito and chicken strips. Everything was excellent. The other reviews we read were right on about how much food they serve here. A massive breakfast burrito. The chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes filled the entire plate. My wife ordered a stack of 3 pancakes they were so big and fluffy she barely finished two. The waitress was very friendly and service was incredibly fast. We could not believe how fast food came up. This is not a 5 star,white napkin restaurant, but it is everything you expect out of a 5 star diner. Filling, tasty food, and fast, friendly service. Ordered chicken fried steak with gravy on the side, dish came out smothered in gravy, they took it back and it came back in 3 minutes (hmmmm) with no gravy on top this time with the gravy on the side BUT, what the cook had done was he jus scraped off the gravy and over refried the steak in which when I picked the steak to see the bottom, the steak slid right out onto the plate as if it had a pair of pants on, WHAT A JOKE THIS PLACE!!!!!! read more

Uh.... no, but when your traveling to L.A. from S.F. on Hwy 5 and your other options are Deny's and IHOP, Zingo's is a 6, but I can only give it 5, so a 5 it is. The service: I was waiting for one of the raspy voiced waitresses to yell, "kiss my grits", but as grits are not on the menu, I would have probably been waiting a long time! I used to love this place. Love is a strong word. I find that it is overused far too often but I'm using it. But that was the past and I'm older and wiser now. It was a place I discovered when I was entering my night owl stage and being a 24 hr. joint it was delicious and not Dennys. I hate Dennys. Hate also being a particularly strong word. Being an escape from Dennys hell endeared me to Zingo's and it's also fun to say. Go ahead, try it. See. In any event, it's a trucker diner. The food is ok. Still far better than Dennys. I no longer love it as it is no longer 24 hrs. on weekend due to too many drunken fights and unruliness. Furthermore I'm over the novelty of a 24 hr better than Dennys place.
