Sadly, our meals were quite disappointing. Bought a Zip Pack and a mini fried chicken with french fries and toss salad. The spam was dry and a very thin slice, and the teri beef had no sauce. The fried chicken was okay, and the fish was good. The mini fried chicken plate had the toss salad with the french fries on top of it, and it made the salad very soggy and wilted. Wish they had put the fries in a separate bag. Will likely NOT be ordering the Zip Pack again, especially at the high price. Just not like before. read more

So what's up with ALL THE CONSTANT PRICE INCREASES??? Now they even DATE the carry out menus so customers will know these prices will only be for a few weeks! This is not fine dining & they'll price themselves right out of business. And the food is mediocre to down right awful. Something as simple as Won Ton Min: the noodles have been replaced with a tasteless limp variety, dishwater soup & the wontons are poor quality pork w/hard wrapping...terrible. There are hundreds of restaurants (even on the mainland) that do a much better dish! I wonder how long locals will continue to patronize this place & be disappointed? I love Zippy's. That doesn't mean it's the best place on earth but I can always come to Zippy's and find something that makes me happy. If you're doing takeout, call ahead so you don't have to wait and it's a breeze to fly in and out. Breakfast: love the corned beef hash and fried rice with my fried egg white. Delish. But the portion size seems to be coming down now. Sad. I guess it's not a bad thing since we get so fat so fast but it used to make me happy with it looked like I had a mound of goodness in front of me. Lunch/Dinner: I'm just a simple girl who loves the chili and rice. Second to that might be portuguese bean soup. And then saimin. After that once in a while the korean fried chicken, chicken curry, chef salad with french dressing and the list goes on. one thing, the corned beef with cabbage was really dry, but it might have been at the end of the night so may be worth a caution. Dessert: love the jello cream pie, chantilly cake and haupia cake. Napples are always a good standbye but you can find me oogling over the cakes. The complete meals come with dessert so if you're jonesing for some sweets, then consider adding on a drink and dessert for less than the cost of a piece of pie alone! Sit down restaurant or takeout counter available. As well as the Kahala Sushi and Napolean Bakery Free parking downstairs (in big diagonal spaces) or upstairs (smaller 90 degree angle spaces). The service is terrible. There's only 2 waitresses for the whole dinning room full of customers. In the past few months this has happened many times so we will stop going there. Management needs to add more help or the customers like us will go somewhere else. read more

My mother was visiting from the mainland and wanted saimin. Since a lot of the smaller saimin places have limited seating or are only doing takeout, we decided to go here. We arrived at 11:00am on a weekday and there were 2 groups in front of us. We were seated in 15 minutes and I could see everyone was socially distanced with every other table empty. I was impressed that they were at capacity on a weekday. My mom is a light eater but when she say the Zip Min she had to have it. She was happy to get the won ton with the noodles. She couldn't finish it all so bonus for me! I got my go to order, the Korean Chicken salad. I feel like the salad offsets the fried chicken but I know it doesn't work that way. Everything was fresh and tasty. The waitress was also the hostess so I think they were short-staffed that day, but the service was good. I love how light and airy this location feels with the vaulted ceiling and all of the windows. This feels more inviting than the Hawaii Kai and original McCully location. 5 stars because the saimin was right, the chicken was crispy, and the service was great. read more

Second-level was mighty tight. Better off parking downstairs. The place was busy on Sunday. Staff was really, really nice. The line was long for waiter service, so we just ordered at the counter and ate in the separate dining area. The breakfast bentos were 6 dollars and some change. Thought was pretty small for a little over 6 bucks, but it was a "bento," so I can't really complain. I have seen older photos when the bentos were around 5 bucks, but in the summer of 2022 with inflation and supply issues, this is probably just the way it is. Although, my buddy ordered the regular sized Portuguese sausage breakfast, and...supply issues or not, pretty small. Maybe just don't order from the breakfast menu if you want bigger portions. All in all, I still love me some Zippy's. My favorite location is still the one on Nimitz next to Liliha. read more

Little kept secret about the Japanese section in this restaurant. Recently remodeled, with more seating area and a small sushi bar. The ambience is cafeteria-like, but well, it's Zippy's, home of the Zip Paks and fundraiser chili buckets. I wanted a quick dinner and came here. Parking is free, plentiful and convenient which is a thumbs up for me. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. The teishoku special was filling and simple. Although it did not come with miso soup or pickled sides, there was enough to fill you up. What I always notice about Zippy's is that the wait help are always so pleasant. I've never had a grouchy server. This is a good testament to the management of this business. They must treat their employees well and it shows. read more

My ears are actually frozen. There is SOME EMPLOYEE that management has to look into that is lowering the temperature to freezing levels. It's VERY COLD. This is the only Zippys that has the temperature set to extremely cold levels. So it was TONIGHT (SUNDAY, MARCH 13, 2022) that it was freezing. The other night it was perfect temperatures. Zippys Kahala. Location? Convenient, it's within walking distance from the mall. Top and bottom floor parking. A bathroom located inside. Two entrances. With a party of 11, we were greeted and seated right away. We had an amazing hostess Tammy and an amazing waiter Tevita! Clean restaurant, amazing service and great food. We ordered Kalbi Dog, Hamburger Steak, and Kids Burger w Fries. Kalbi Dog was almost $12 but it was filling and definitely worth it. I personally loved it & it was super filling. Hamburger steak? That is one of the few plates I normally order from the FF Side. Kids Burger w Fries, you can't go wrong there. The rest of our party made their order but I didn't pay any mind to it, sorry nor do I think I should review what they got as it doesn't pertain to me. But I can tell you, we all had a wonderful time and loved our food. It's one thing to move fast but to do it with grace is something else. I've dined it at other places and had servers who move frantically, who looked lost getting things done. Tevita wasn't frantic, he was confident which was reassuring. It was a busy night and Tevita was tending to his other tables too. He's a hard worker who moves with purpose. He made sure we were all having a good time, our drinks filled and if we needed anything. He has great suggestions and radiates positivity. Tammy, you too were wonderful hun. Service: The service was okay, nothing special but not bad either. It took a little longer than i hoped, but it was peak lunch time so it's understandable. Food: I got a mushroom burger with grilled onions - the raw onions are too spicy and make your breath smell too much. There were two mushrooms that were burnt - charred, actually. but there was more flavor in the burger so i forgave it. The overall experience was alright. It was a very sad day. I normally like stopping by to pick up a quick meal but that's not today. First I wasn't greeted by their usual friendly staff. This lady looked like she didn't want to be at work. Very very grumpy. When I gave her my coupon (I had just come from work and forgot to cut off the excess papee around the coupon), shejust grabbed the paper and stormed off. Didn't know what to think, but when she returned she three the scissors at the cash register. Ok, I got it...you're a grump and you don't like working there. Tried the non contact pick up service for the first time. It was fabulous! Of course I ordered early as I know the parking lot will not be pleasant during the dinner rush. Six stalls reserved for this service. Sign gives a number to text your order# and the stall#. Since it was busy someone already came up to my car to get the order#. The only thing that I like about Zippy's, not just this particular location in Kahala, is the fact that they are 24 Hours. With that said, I'm just disappointed at the high prices and the less than stellar portions that they serve. They advertise on tv all the freakin time, but when they show the portion size in a dinky plastic tray, its like $6.00 for that?! Come on!!! I do get that they have to pay the bills to finance the 24/7 operation, but do try to give some value to the customers! I haven't been here for a long while, due to the above mentioned reason. The only reason why I was here was to pick up some benefit chili tickets I bought from a friend. They were for her kid's fundraising thing. Yay Zippy's! I like Zippy's simply because it is a cool Hawaiian family restaurant....you can't get it anywhere else on the mainland....unless it's frozen. This particular location is pretty cool because it is 24 hours. So this is my usual airport stop....if I am flying out early or really late, I know that I will be able to pick up a zip pac for the plane. I do enjoy the ample parking upstairs and downstairs. The elevator also makes it possible for everyone to easily get upstairs as well. The waitstaff is usually pretty friendly and this restaurant is relatively clean. Most of the time I get take out from here, but I did have a chance to eat here recently and it was a nice experience. I was here with my family and there wasn't enough room to seat us so we sat at two booths adjacent to each other....worked out. I had: Corn chowder This was good...not the best corn chowder I have ever had...but I would get it again Beef curry This was on special and I wanted to try it. It was good...but probably not a repeat for me....I do want to try the sushi here the next time. Usually for breakfast the chili moco is my go to.....or the zip pac. 4 stars for Napoleon's, 3 stars for Zippy's. Napoleon's has the best Custard Pie, hands down. The pie crust is average, but what shines is the custard. Nothing fancy, no nutmeg (it ruins it), light custard and no film on the top. This is what I dream about when I think about custard pie in Hawaii. Even better, you can buy individual slices and half pies if you don't want a whole. Zippy's is Zippy's. I love their Mochiko Chicken and they still have the best mac salad on the island. Other favorites include Saimin, Fried Chicken, and Zippy's Chili. Good option for inexpensive eats and convenience. read more

For some odd reason, I've never been thrilled about eating at Zippys but after trying their Oxtail soup, I'm definitely going to be returning. They provided a great portion along with some grated ginger and topped it off with fresh cilantro. Reminded me of some good old home cooking. read more

Went to Zippys for breakfast after returning to Hawaii for a short trip. It never dissapoints as I had the corn beef hash, 2 eggs, fried rice with a side of Portuguese sausages. The hash was perfect and better than other hash houses. It was a customer favorite as several other diners ordered this dish, some with potatoes or different sides. Service was on point and the atmosphere was definitely "local style". I will be back to eat at Zippys. read more

It's been a long time since we've been able to dine in at Zippys, but, it's been worth the wait. I feel very safe and can see that a lot of time and thought was put in to refurbishing the restaurant due to Covid. And the quality of materials used deserves mention. They've taken every precaution to ensure the safety of patrons as well as staff. I love not having to write down my Covid info for tracing. The host took all the info on a iPad for me. Menus serve as placemats. Tables and booths never looked cleaner. Large plexiglass partitions separate each booth and table and are sterilized completely between diners. Kudos to Zippys! Friend was visiting again so we met again at Kahala Zippy's in the Sushi section. I decided to have the Kahala Special and my friend had the June Special. The food was good but the Kahala Special is now a menu item and over 20 dollars. The udon was good the sushi and tempura was good but I guess they don't give maki and miso soup anymore. I wanted to double check whether it comes with miso soup since I wasn't given miso soup previously and found out later I was supposed to get a small bowl. So I asked the waiter. He said if you have udon you don't get miso soup. He said he could bring me a bowl but he would charge me for it. I said never mind. It was empty in that section and we were surprised since when we have gone there in the past it has always been very crowded. My friend said now for a senior card it's 20 dollars so she didn't renew her card. She said previously she paid 3 dollars but that was years ago. So maybe with the increase in prices and decrease in what you receive there are less people. Maybe it was just a slow night. I was disappointed that the waiter forgot to bring me a lemon slice for my water. We were the only ones there so he wasn't too busy. I had to remind him by flagging him down closer to the end of our meal after he brought the neighboring table's water. It was nice that the waitress refilled our tea and water cups without us having to flag her down or even ask. I recently watched a post by a YouTuber where she mentioned she was surprised at how expensive Zippy's had become. That wasn't a surprise for me as I have always thought Zippy's was a bit pricey, but I still went because I also felt the food quality was consistent and you always knew what you were getting. I placed an order via their app. It was easy to navigate and place my order. They weren't busy because it said it would be ready in 15 minutes, the parking lot was pretty empty and my order was ready before the time promised. Overall, it could have been a pretty great experience! HOWEVER, I ordered a Korean Chicken & Chili mixed plate. The app allowed me to customize and request the sauce separate which I was very happy about. HOWEVER, when I got home I found there was NO SAUCE. The sauce is what makes Korean chicken, Korean chicken! No sauce means you only have deep fried chicken bits. I didn't think it was worth driving back just for a small container of sauce. Zippy's, you've lost my trust and future business. I felt like you're pricey because you pay for consistency and quality. I'll probably dine in once it's safe to do so but for now since I feel like I was short-changed tonight and you've lost my trust you won't get my take-out business anymore. I know it's human to make a mistake, but because you pay more for Zippy's than other fast food take out in the area, I think there should be better quality controls in place. read more

Ranking 4/5 because it is a Hawaii classic that is open late. My friends and family always come here for business meetings, post late night meals, and everything in between. The Zippys at Kahala has specials every month and while the sushi is pretty ridiculous in price, they have monthly specials. Pictured below is the special for January-February with brown rice. $11.75 for 5 pieces of tempura (Pumpkin, zucchini, sweet potato, and two shrimp), tender sesame shoyu marinated pork loin, and miso soup! We headed here after Dragon Boat practice, we were hungry and I was craving for some of my favorites. This location was near where I was staying. Zippys is a local favorite, you can find just about everything on the menu. Zip packs, Saimin, Lunch plates, Chili and Fried Chicken to name a few. The chicken and Chili is amazing and a much try. Get the mixed plate and you can try both at once. My son loved the Saimin and my chicken. There's a Napoleons Bakery inside, they sell a ton of desserts. Get a Napple on your way out, you won't be disappointed. There custard pie and Long Johns are also local favorites. There is free parking underneath and on top as well. You can either use the stairs or jump on the elevators to get to the entrance. Stalls are more for midsize/compact cars. Try bringing a large SUV and it's gonna be a real tight squeeze. There wasn't a wait, we were sat by the hostess pretty quickly. Our waitress greeted us shortly after being seated, she was friendly and funny. She helped us order some items that want in the menu. She also rung some items up, so we weren't paying a la carte like we ordered. Essentially saving us some money, greatly appreciated. read more

I've loved and enjoyed Zippy's Kahala for a very long time but today will be the last time I come back.. The last three times I've been here have been the same.. Today the service was just bad and the food left a lot to be desired. I almost got up out of my seat to grab my own water and condiments. My friend and I came here after an alumni basketball game because this is one of the few Zippy's locations that has a restaurant instead of just an dine-in area for food you order from the take-out counter. Zippy's is always great... they really never disappoint. My go-to order is the bean-less chili with rice and corn. Sometimes I get a piece of fried chicken with it, but only if I'm feeling extra fancy. Much as I expected, it was delicious! What made this experience extra special was our server, Tevita. He was funny, nice, and very helpful. He advised me that if I was going to order an orange bang, I should do so at the take-out counter since they give larger drink sizes! I ended up ordering an orange bang milkshake which turned out to be the same size no matter where I ordered it from. Without even asking, he packed a to-go cup full of the orange bang milkshake AND gave me a small cup to drink as we finished up our meal... Such a kind man! This is a departure from my usual reviews, but we discovered some quality in Zippys in Honolulu. We were tired upon our arrival and wanted a quick and easy dinner. Someone mentioned Zippys close by. It looked like a fast food restaurant. We were surprised at the food. My husband enjoyed an excellent bowl of beef stew. I think it was the same quality as my homemade stew. Very good! The fried chicken was also very good and was accompanied with a large portion of rice and a side salad. We came back for lunch several days later. I tried the spaghetti; once again I thought the recipe was very good. My husband had the Chili Mac Spaghetti, which he truly enjoyed. I read that they have been in business for 53 years in Hawaii and have 24 locations. That's quite a success story! I can see why. If you're leaving the beach, or just want a very low cost and casual meal in Honolulu, head to Zippys! read more
