IMHO My daughter wanted to go to Zippy's as it was recommended to her. I told her it was like a Hawaiian Denny's, but with a bakery! When we arrived, a friendly staffer told us it would be a 15-minute wait to be seated. Shortly thereafter, we were led to a booth situated close to the kitchen with a humongous fan blowing warm air in our direction. The nice lady apologized that Zippy's didn't have air conditioning and asked if this seating was okay. Sure, any air circulation was better than nothing. Eventually my husband had to switch seats with our daughter since he couldn't take the constant blowing. We ordered the Korean Fried Chicken & Chili mixed plate, $17.55, Chicken Katsu, $16.45, the Chicken Trio (Fried Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Korean Fried Chicken), $18.65, and French fries. No complaints here! The food was hot and delicious. All chicken dishes were flavorful and yummy. I had to wait awhile for my fried chicken portion of the trio to arrive, but when it did, it was super hot, crispy and moist! Of course, we left with a box of leftovers since the portions were ample. Landed in Kahului Airport at 11am and had a Ka'anapali golf tee time at 1 pm so needed a quick stop for lunch. We tried out Zippy's since it was on the way to the course and offers online ordering and pickup. Picking up the food was really easy and quick. The best part is, in order to keep the food warm, your takeout order is split and placed in insulated microwaves to separate your order from other takeout orders. We ordered the chicken trio plate and some spam musubis to try. The chicken trio came with fried chicken, chicken katsu, and Korean fried chicken. The chicken katsu and fried chicken were made well but pretty standard across other katsu and fried chicken places. But, the Korean fried chicken was great. Had very good flavor and texture. This is a spot I heard is a locals favorite, so we had to get it! Looking at the menu they are known for their chicken plates and chili. We got the Korean friend chicken plate which comes with two scoops of rice and Mac salad. The chicken is amazing, so crunchy and the chicken is very moist. The Mac salad is also very yummy! We also tried to chili and that hit the spot. Lastly we got the wonton soup which was good. The portion size is pretty big and the service is fast! It serves a mix of American style food (hamburgers, fried chicken, pancakes) alongside Hawai'i favorites (saimin, Korean fried chicken, loco moco), plus they serve anything from the menu - breakfast, lunch, dinner - all day long. It's the perfect place to take any friends from the continent, especially if they have kids. I recently returned there, stopping there on our way from the airport. I ordered the mini-plate of Korean Fried Chicken, brown rice, and upgraded my corn to macaroni salad. Tasty, but lukewarm. Brown rice was perfectly cooked. I have been told before by their servers that the Korean Friend Chicken isn't that spicy, and I just went for it this time, to check it out for myself. Well, they were right, of course. Honestly, I would not order the KFC again. My impression of it was that it was their regular, super crisy fried chicken (which I absolutely love), drizzled with a sweet, Asian-style sauce. Hmph. The classic macaroni salad had the pefect balance between pasta and mayonaisse, but a bit sweet for me. I still enjoy this place, and my favorites so far are their saimin, fried chicken, loco moco, Hawaiian beef stew and fried noodles, which might be Zippy's version of a dry mein? Keep in mind it only has three pieces of different meat, rice with furikake, and one piece of limp takuan. This was the one sit down meal during our Maui trip that didn't end up costing an arm and a leg. Cons- the lobby/counter service area was not clean, with debris from the outdoors all over the floor. If my family hadn't been tired and very hungry, I would have turned around and walked out based on this factor alone. The interior was lackluster and in need of updating. Signs inside seemed to point to short-staffing at this location, which I am pretty forgiving about. We ordered the Loco Moco ($15.50), Large Saimin ($6.55), Chicken Katsu Plate ($13.95), Teriyaki Beef Plate ($15.55), and Large Coffee ($2.85). Everything was pretty standard. The teriyaki plate and katsu plate were the ones I liked the most as I'm not usually a loco moco fan in general. But when in Hawaii, must get Hawaiian dishes. Overall, solid spot with lots of variety. It's not anything spectacular, but worth the visit especially on your first time in Hawaii. read more

We are fairly regular visitors to Maui, our son & his family have lived there for many years. So many of our mainland friends have asked if we had been to Zippys and I have always had to tell them, "No." We finally took the plunge. I can now cross Zippys off our "to do" list. Please understand that this review is for this TYPE of restaurant, not a place like Mamas Fish House or Merrimans at Kapalua. We arrived a bit after 1:00 on a week day. It was not crowded though there were several tables occupied. Everything was very clean and the staff quite friendly. I ordered the chili loco moco, as I had heard the chili was very good. It was not bad at all but nothing to get excited about. The hamburger in the moco loco was fine, just nothing to rave about. I do not recall what my wife and our daughter had, but they had no complaints. Where I would really suggest Zippys is for the visitor whose plane arrives at OGG after 8:00 pm. By the time you deplane, get through baggage claim and get your rental car, there are not a lot of options for dinner. It is not a bad choice at all and has a good sized menu. I am wlling, and certainly will return to this location. I would rate the food 3 stars, cleanliness/ambiance and service 5 stars. read more

If you have never been to Zippy's before, you must come here. It's a local Hawaiian "fast food" chain and serving many local Hawaiian food with the influences of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese and Native Hawaiian food. My favorite to order are Saimin and Chili rice. But I'm in Maui and most of my friends who lives in Maui have never eaten at Zippy's before, so I bought them 5 chili and rice from Zippy's Kahului as introduction to our Zippy's world. Judging from all of their reactions, I'm sure they all will come back to Zippy's Kahului soon to try other things from the menu. A bowl of chili rice always does the trick, never fail. Soon there will be 5 new "Zipters" in Maui and I would never have to eat at Zippy's alone again when in Maui. read more

Stopped by Zippy's after arriving in Maui. Wishing we had stopped elsewhere though this was conveniently located close to the airport. This location has dine-in located on the left once you walk in, and a take-out counter and seating area on the right. The restaurant looks like it could use some TLC on both sides. Ordered take out and sat down to eat, though considering there were more flies than people on the takeout side, came to regret the decision. The food itself was as expected, fast casual. Food took about 5-7 min. after we ordered and had ok flavor, though the fried chicken was a bit overcooked and very crispy. The chicken katsu was good, along with the Korean fried chicken. Sadly, the fact that there were so many flies inside which kept hovering and landing on the large window next to us. I killed 4 flies myself since they became such pests while eating. Yet, at least that many were still hovering once we finished eating. The other reason for a lower rating was no refills on soda, even when it costs $4. Find this a completely joke when the cost of the soda is minimal compared to the charge and I'm sure the dine in side will refill your soda for the same price. Don't think I would stop by this location again as have had better experiences at other locations on other islands. read more

The chicken was extremely over cooked and burnt! The pieces were small! Because it was in the oil to long and overcooked, the chicken was beyond greasy! I paid $3.50 per chicken and this is the quality I get! I wish I opened the box before I got home! There was no one in the restaurant and about 15 employees standing around. Saimin was very salty and the loco moco was just ok. If you are visiting, you should at least try it otherwise you're not missing much. I however would not opt to sit in. The menu is pretty extensive and I think the breakfast menu items seemed a little priced on the high side for what they were. They serve the full menu in the morning. I decided to have a veggie omelette, an omelette and hashbrowns it was OK. It felt likeca sterile restaurant. It used to be crowdedwith local people thats what made it fun but the economy of casual restaurants just doesn't work the way it used to and it seemed empty and cavernous. The drive-through lane at the chicken sandwich joint across the way was banging people dining choices change overtime The service was A-OK and I got my check relatively quickly overall for what I ate. Needed to get some food before heading over to Costco. Headed over to zippys and was seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly hand helpful. We were ordering all of these sides for the kids and she helped recommended dishes that were cheaper for us and still got what we wanted. This is a locals place. Hopped off our flight and went straight to Zippys for the loco moco! It immediately satisfied all of our cravings as we ate on our drive.
