Despite all, their wait people are friendly, generous and kind. Since I had breakfast earlier, I decided on the loco moco mini with white rice, Mac salad and over easy egg. First of all, I'm a big fan of country fried steak with plenty of gravy so loco moco should be up my alley. It definitely did not disappoint. I could have had more. Good food, bad service. Our server, Angel, greeted us nicely enough. I asked if there were different booth sizes, she said no, and then asked me WHY I was asking- I let her know we'd like a bigger booth if available. When the food came out, one item was missing. My dad let her know he had a question about a missing item, and she said the dish was still coming--then hit us with, "Any other questions?" in a passive-aggressive tone. We were confused, since we'd been friendly and using our "please" and "thank yous" the whole time. She never checked on us once (which is odd considering sodas are over $5 and they should ask if we wanted refills), and totally forgot a different item we ordered--it never came. When we left and didn't tip based on the service, Angel came up and told my dad that next time we could sit "on the cheaper side" where tipping isn't expected. Zippy's has always been an iconic spot in Hawaiʻi, and the food never disappoints -- it's consistently ono and comforting. That said, the service at the Kahului location really needs attention. I went in for dinner last night and scanned to dine in. Initially, I was told it would be a 15-minute wait, which quickly turned into 45 minutes -- still understandable, especially during busy hours. What wasn't okay was how rude the hostess was. She was an elderly woman who seemed visibly irritated and dismissive when we asked questions. It set a negative tone before we even sat down. Once we were seated, our server, continued that same energy. He was short, unwelcoming, and didn't seem to want to be there at all. I get it -- working in food service can be stressful, and we all have bad days. But in customer service, you have to be able to show up for your guests regardless. That wasn't the case here. Out of the two servers working that night, at least one was just plain rude. It's disappointing when the quality of the food is overshadowed by poor service. I really hope management takes a closer look at the customer experience here, because Zippy's deserves to be known for more than just great food. read more

If you're from Cali, it kind of reminds me of a Dennys or an IHOP but with Hawaiian eats. When walking in, you have to check in with a host. Zippy's was my late mother's favorite restaurant when visiting the Hawaiian Islands, so in her memory, it was the first restaurant we dined at during our trip to Maui. We arrived at the airport mid afternoon and wanted something to tie us over until dinner, so we decided to order the Chicken Trio (Fried Chicken, Chicken Katsu & Korean Fried Chicken) and Spaghetti with Garlic Bread to share. The best way I can describe the meal is "it tasted like home." Everything was delicious, as expected! The chicken were all very flavorful and crunchy. I loved the chili with spaghetti! We ordered the Korean Fried Chicken & Chili mixed plate, $17.55, Chicken Katsu, $16.45, the Chicken Trio (Fried Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Korean Fried Chicken), $18.65, and French fries. No complaints here! The food was hot and delicious. All chicken dishes were flavorful and yummy. Landed in Kahului Airport at 11am and had a Ka'anapali golf tee time at 1 pm so needed a quick stop for lunch. We tried out Zippy's since it was on the way to the course and offers online ordering and pickup. Picking up the food was really easy and quick. The best part is, in order to keep the food warm, your takeout order is split and placed in insulated microwaves to separate your order from other takeout orders. We ordered the chicken trio plate and some spam musubis to try. The chicken trio came with fried chicken, chicken katsu, and Korean fried chicken. The chicken katsu and fried chicken were made well but pretty standard across other katsu and fried chicken places. But, the Korean fried chicken was great. Had very good flavor and texture. We got the Korean friend chicken plate which comes with two scoops of rice and Mac salad. The chicken is amazing, so crunchy and the chicken is very moist. The Mac salad is also very yummy! We also tried to chili and that hit the spot. Lastly we got the wonton soup which was good. The portion size is pretty big and the service is fast! This was the one sit down meal during our Maui trip that didn't end up costing an arm and a leg. Cons- the lobby/counter service area was not clean, with debris from the outdoors all over the floor. If my family hadn't been tired and very hungry, I would have turned around and walked out based on this factor alone. The interior was lackluster and in need of updating. Signs inside seemed to point to short-staffing at this location, which I am pretty forgiving about. The teriyaki plate and katsu plate were the ones I liked the most as I'm not usually a loco moco fan in general. But when in Hawaii, must get Hawaiian dishes. I came here feeling nostalgic about the times I ate here as a child. When we stopped in for the Zippys lunch pack I found the price had gone up to $15. Keep in mind it only has three pieces of different meat, rice with furikake, and one piece of limp takuan. Stopped by Zippy's after arriving in Maui. Wishing we had stopped elsewhere though this was conveniently located close to the airport. This location has dine-in located on the left once you walk in, and a take-out counter and seating area on the right. The restaurant looks like it could use some TLC on both sides. Ordered take out and sat down to eat, though considering there were more flies than people on the takeout side, came to regret the decision. The food itself was as expected, fast casual. Food took about 5-7 min. after we ordered and had ok flavor, though the fried chicken was a bit overcooked and very crispy. The chicken katsu was good, along with the Korean fried chicken. Sadly, the fact that there were so many flies inside which kept hovering and landing on the large window next to us. I killed 4 flies myself since they became such pests while eating. Yet, at least that many were still hovering once we finished eating. The other reason for a lower rating was no refills on soda, even when it costs $4. Find this a completely joke when the cost of the soda is minimal compared to the charge and I'm sure the dine in side will refill your soda for the same price. Don't think I would stop by this location again as have had better experiences at other locations on other islands. read more

We are fairly regular visitors to Maui, our son & his family have lived there for many years. So many of our mainland friends have asked if we had been to Zippys and I have always had to tell them, "No." We finally took the plunge. I can now cross Zippys off our "to do" list. Please understand that this review is for this TYPE of restaurant, not a place like Mamas Fish House or Merrimans at Kapalua. We arrived a bit after 1:00 on a week day. It was not crowded though there were several tables occupied. Everything was very clean and the staff quite friendly. I ordered the chili loco moco, as I had heard the chili was very good. It was not bad at all but nothing to get excited about. The hamburger in the moco loco was fine, just nothing to rave about. I do not recall what my wife and our daughter had, but they had no complaints. Where I would really suggest Zippys is for the visitor whose plane arrives at OGG after 8:00 pm. By the time you deplane, get through baggage claim and get your rental car, there are not a lot of options for dinner. It is not a bad choice at all and has a good sized menu. I am wlling, and certainly will return to this location. I would rate the food 3 stars, cleanliness/ambiance and service 5 stars. read more

This was a 9piece Chicken box that cost me $32.00 I can barely eat out as I am a single mom to 3 kids. Decided to get dinner and boy was I disappointed !! The chicken was extremely over cooked and burnt! The pieces were small! Because it was in the oil to long and overcooked, the chicken was beyond greasy! I paid $3.50 per chicken and this is the quality I get! I wish I opened the box before I got home! There was no one in the restaurant and about 15 employees standing around.
