Everything was great! The menu offers some unique and interesting choices, our server was helpful and attentive, the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant, and we really enjoyed our meal. The Grilled Salmon was cooked so well and served with good sides. The Barbacoa Beef Enchiladas were delicious! I wasn't sure if I would like the green or red enchilada sauce so I got them both on the side and so glad I did because while both were good, the Barbacoa Beef was SO delicious that I was thankful to not have it smothered in sauce and hiding all that flavor! We've been going to Z for a decade. It's been slowly going downhill which makes us so sad! I don't understand why they make the decisions they do‽ the massive rehab project in Chandler was probably very expensive and I don't think it did that much to make it better, besides the wrap around bar which is cool, but it feels like a cafeteria now! It used to have such a buzz on the wknd! they hardly give any queso in the $16 trio. U gotta keep the main stays the best thing! where is the tequila in the margs?? We made a reservation for 7 to celebrate a birthday and Xmas. When we got there, there was no one there so we were seated right away. It went south from there pretty quickly. Our servers were very pleasant but it took a long time to get drinks after ordering. The bartender was quick but they sat on the counter waiting to be picked up. The drinks were terrible unless they came in a bottle. Do NOT order the espresso martini. The food was subpar. We made the best of it but won't be back. read more

Was craving chicken enchiladas and hadn't been to Z'Tejas for years. Based on the food I can't believe they are still in business. The chicken enchiladas were mushy chicken put between two thick, doughy tortillas.....no attempt to roll them, no discernible cheese, and then smothered in sauce. The black beans were undercooked and still chewy. The rice flavorless. Best part of the meal was the cornbread they bring as an appetizer. My waitress was cordial but not very professional......even forgetting to return my credit card when she brought my receipt. Knew this chain had financial problems in the past but based on today's terrible food they should never have been rescued. read more

I have gone to the Z's in Austin for years until they shut down. I was happy to find these were back in operation on AZ. The prices have creeped a bit and the Mexican Martinis have shrunk, but still just as tasty. The foreign bartenders are quite standoffish, but your get your food and the drinks are tasty . read more

We came for a nice Sunday brunch on the patio with friends and some dogs. This place gets a 5 for being dog friendly and for the hostess who brought out water bowls for the pups. We started with cornbread and some chips and salsa while we waited for our friends. The chips were warm and fresh and the 2 kinds of salsa were both good. I love the little cast iron skillets for the cornbread and they come out hot with plenty of butter. Our friends arrived and ordered 2 ruby red mimosas which arrived very quickly in very small glasses filled with ice and were a very pale pink. So in an 6-8 ounce glass there was maybe 3-4 ounces of drink and most of it was melted ice. When we commented that it didn't seem like a $10 drink the server asked if they wanted to order something different for the 2nd round. Instead they got 2 more of the same with no ice. Those were a completely different, rich shade of pink and were still small for $10, but at least were not all ice. It would have gone a long way with me if the server had simply replaced the watered down ones with fresh ones at no charge, but he didn't. The food was very good and the portions were decent sizes. And the presentation on the plates was lovely. I'm sure that we will be back as it's great to find dog friendly patios with good food, but we will stick to iced tea. read more

We had wonderful service and great food. The bartender even gave us waters to go as it was 112 degrees outside. Realized after we left that I had forgotten my purse there. I called and they were so friendly and had it saved in the office for me. When we went to pick it up everyone was so friendly and accommodating. I am so glad me and my bf decided to come here. We saw a clip on the news about a four course special they had and had to come give or try. This is now out new favorite restaurant. We will definitely be coming here often. My bf loved the pasta so much that he ordered another order of it to take home. The food is always good. Portions have gotten smaller though. Today the service was the worst I have experienced. The manager gave compensation after we asked and didn't seem very concerned with our experience. We waited well over an hour for our food! We arrived at 6;30 and left close to 10 if that gives any perspective. We had good company to chat and make the time go by, but it wasn't acceptable how long it took. Waitress admitted she accidentally put the order on hold. Then said she put it in on urgent but it still took another 20* minutes to come out. No dishes cleared from the table from appetizers until asked. What happened to Z'Tejas? I knew they remodeled, but I hadn't been there to eat in ages. We took a group of people last night and to say we were disappointed was an understatement. I wish I had come here to read the reviews. The inside used to be so nice and cozy, and now it looks like a cafeteria. It wasn't very clean inside and almost looked like they were going out of business. They were out of all wines and one of the beer that they have on tap. The waitress we had was very friendly, but barely came back to check on us. The food was alright and they made a mistake on one of the meals so they gave us a discount! 75th birthday celebration for me! 8 family members with a reservation. Drinks took 40 minutes. Lunch took forever. Were promised free desserts for the two late drinks. Spouses pasta was cold. My green chile fundido was like melted Velvetta with an occasional chili. Couldn't eat it. Waitress didn't check so I went without lunch. This is a very nice restaurant that for years that was one of my wife's favorites. Used to be a monthly visit. We've spent many mother's days here with our family and have great memories but it has changed unfortunately like so many other businesses during these challenging times. The last few experiences have not been good. Yesterday I had the santa fe enchiladas, which i used to love, but again they tasted like they were prepared on a different day and were warm and crunchy on the outside, cold and harder on the inside. My wife had their cheeseburger which she said was good so kudos there. The service was indifferent so not positive or negative in that regard. We spent $50 on dinner for two that included one beer and for declining quality of food it is just not worth it anymore. read more

Fail... I've been going to Z'Tejas for many years enjoying the rich classy yet grounded ambiance and the delicious food, but went with a few friends the other day and was deeply saddened that they redecorated the place and changed the menu. Everything about this place now screams cheap and corporate. They have changed the colors, the lighting, the layout... it's like Luby's Cafeteria meets Bob Big-Boy in there with this 1950's style lighting around the bar and the cheap institutional style bland seating. The flooring changed from classy dark carpeting to light-tan airport tile that must have come with new airport lighting. Gone are the stylish and tasteful amber lighting accents. Why so bright in there now? People need to see their boarding passes? And nothing on the walls, (maybe they are still working on it), except a big weird cartoonish mural. I think there is a train on it. How a train relates I'm not sure. "Where are we?" I kept asking, "a theme park for immigrants?" Lol. It used to have a coolness factor, and could hang out for happy hour or have dinner. Not anymore. Let me ask you, do you feel cool having drinks at the Country Buffet? Needless to say, you would never take a date to the place in its present form, unless you wanted to set a tone for disappointment. And just plan on watching a submarine movie alone at home for the remainder of the night afterward. (Or sad yet hopeful Rom-Com for women.) Even the sign has lost it's intricacies and dumbed down looking as corporate and non-special as a Taco Bell sign. The place lost all its style. I wonder what they were thinking? Anyway, I may still order take out for the delicious chile relleno that survived the menu slashing. There was a time a vowed to eventually order everything on their varietal extensive menu, but they have culled it way down and even changed its format so you again feel like they are catering to the elderly, or dietly challenged, or simpleton. Sorry for the review Z'Tejas, but you HAD something there. ..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I've added before and after pictures - you guess which is before and which is cafeteria. Okay so I just found this Z-Tejas location in Chandler , AZ. This now happens to my Favorite !! The food is par non, but the ambience happens to be my Favorite.. Start to finish was mehhhh. Totally bummed because many years ago when I lived in the valley, I was a regular at the Scottsdale location. So when a friend suggested this (because I've been working in Tempe), I was stoked. We came for lunch and from the start things were bad. The waiter was MIA the whole time. I sat with empty water and tea. He delivered our food and never asked about it. I literally had to flag down another waiter to get drinks. The food was very underwhelming. It tasted old and processed. By the time we flagged the waiter down for the second time, we asked for the check. He quickly dropped it off and then never came back. The place was less than half full. I guess the good old days of going to ZTejas will stay in the past. I wish I could have at least gotten a marg, but can't during work. That's one thing I'm sure is still the same. read more

Went here the other night for happy hour.  Their margarita specials are very reasonable and they also have a good selection of drafts.  Our group ended up ordering a few quesadillas, the chicken and beef were particularly good.   Also, the complimentary cornbread was a nice touch. The patio out front was pretty full but we found a table.  It wasn't too distracting even though it was in front of the parking spot.  They seem to have a problem with bugs though, maybe some citronella candles would sort that out. read more

I went here with my parents as we were visiting my grandmother nearby. The service was some of the best we have ever experienced and the food was amazing too. My parents and I started with the cornbread which was hot, fresh, and delicious. For our entrees we shared three things which were all wonderful. The trout salad had delicious and crispy red trout on top of a delicious salad which had spicy walnuts in them. We also had both the seafood and mushroom enchilada that were even better! We don't eat shellfish out, and they were more than willing to take out the small amount of shellfish in it. My parents also told the waiter it was my birthday coming up and they gave us a complimentary Ancho Fudge Pie with a birthday candle on top. It was one of the most delicious deserts we ever had and seemed like a perfect cross between a lava cake and brownie. Plus there is a PokeStop on the premises and as we were about ready to leave, I caught a Pikachu that I renamed Z'Tejachu. My rating is based on this first review... not on the second. On my first visit to Z Tejas, I went at lunchtime with 2 guys from Boeing. We had to sit at the bar since the restaurant was so crowded. As I scanned the menu, the Grilled Green Chile Pork Enchiladas with green chile sauce and a tomato-avocado chopped salad caught my eye... and I'm glad it did. I dont necessarily consider myself an 'enchilada' type of guy, but this dish provided me with the best I've ever tasted. I recommend this dish, with no reservations. Now for my second review. My boss and I headed to Z Tejas today. I figured that I'd mix it up and try something new. Bad choice. I was feeling a bit famished, so I ordered the more expensive menu item, which was Jack's Five-Cheese Macaroni Achiote. The grilled chicken with bleu, Jack, cheddar, parmesan and romano cheeses and bacon gratin sounded like a complete winner. Where to begin? The dish incorporates real cheese, which I would normally find appetizing. However, in this case, the entree was served piping hot, causing the cheese to string everywhere. Kind of messy for a lunchtime meal. So, I ate slow, in hopes that the threadlike curd would solidify some. Well, it did, but it also left, what can only be depicted as an oily scramble, in the bottom of the bowl, due to separation. Delectable! Well, I decided to ease up on the 'roni, and move on to the chicken, which was served with skin on. Visually, the skin looked crispy... but I realized my peepers were punked when I chewed up on some rubbery epidermis. Swoop Says: skip the mac 'n cheeze, go for the whole enchilada! In other news, the server at the bar was top notch. She refilled my palmer again and again, until my bladder shouted: 'Uncle!'. When you need some pampering, saddle up to the bar. Wow! The worst. Sorry to say. But I was in today. Ordered the Diablo pasta and it sucked. I mean they have totally changed the noodles and everything. You have to rename it at this point. The chicken had an awful char taste and the noodles are basically plain, cheap spaghetti noodles now. I ordered the tortilla soup and The wrong soup was initially served, looking and tasting like the other soup option, corn chowder. I questioned the waitress as to whether or not this was my order and she assured me she had given me my tortilla soup. 20 minutes later she returned to my table and I sent the soup back, as it was clearly corn chowder. she stated she would ask the chef if it was tortilla soup or not. Another 20 minutes passed and she brought out my tortilla soup. She did not apologize for the wait or acknowledge that she had brought me the wrong soup the first time. Horrible food, horrible service. How is this place still open. $25 buffet was old, dried out & cold, not edible at all. Should have walked out right there but our party all had taken plates which we didn't eat. Informed manager, he said he would replace. Waited over an hour for just some of the food to be made. The new food that was put out was lukewarm not hot. As for service forget it. To get any assistance we had to flag down manager or server. The restaurant was not busy so there was no excuse.
