Gotta love the San Gabriel Valley! Another restaurant thats good and cheap. Found this place thanks to Yelp. Beef rolls is what everybody raves about, and its definitely worth the rave. Portions are big and taste delicious! The cilantro flavor isn't too overwhelming, and I love that the rolls are a little crunchy but not too much. Tried a couple of other noodle dishes, which were okay but nothing great. Typical small Asian restaurant, but the staff was attentive. They open pretty late, so its a great joint to eat at after a long day out. Will definitely come back for more beef rolls! Just remember to bring cash! read more

Beef burrito is the best around!! And there is this cilantro, veggi, spicy spread they have at each table that you can spread onto any dish that's is just great. I go through one cup of this spread each time I come here. The dumplings taste home made (not frozen like other shops) and the beef noddle soup is great. The only let down here is their onion pancakes; not crispy at all and lack some flavor. Cash only and they do speak English with great service even when they are busy. cheap, good, northern style chinese food, what more do you need??? they're famous for their beef rolls and there's good reason...crispy thin green onion pancakes are rolled up with slices of marinated roast beef and cilantro, make your own combo sauce with the condiments at the table. i like to use the chili oil with a little soy sauce and vinegar. dip in the sauce and bite into bliss. =D the beef noodle soup is sooo hearty, we tried the hand torn noodles last time we went, basically just means that the noodles are thicker with a rustic unevenness, i still prefer the regular size ooodles of noodles. don't forget to add the pickled mustard condiment, my man's fav! they also make some of the best marinated pig ears. its a cold appetizer plate with some stomach and bean curd as well, all marinated in a spicy chili sauce that wakes up all of ur taste buds. the pig ears are also sliced to just the right size and have that cartilege crunch that i love so much. spicy, savory, goodness read more

Oi...another place that I frequent and I didn't know I didn't write an review for. Favorite place for beef rolls, steamed buns, pan-fried dumplings and beef noodle soup. Took a friend here this past Thursday....I believe she too loved every dish I ordered. Usually this place is packed on weekends so luckily it was a weekday and just barely pass lunch time so we didn't have to wait. This place is pretty small but the food comes out pretty quickly so even though there is a wait - it usually isn't super bad. There are four dishes that are a must try if this is your first time trying this type of Chinese food - or it's your first time here. The Beef Rolls - amazing - most places don't make it as good as this place and quite honestly every time I eat here, I see every table with a plate of Beef Rolls. The second thing of popularity would probably be the Beef Soup Noodles or the Steamed Buns....they both are equally very good but if I had only one choice I would go for the Crabmeat or Pork Steamed Buns. It's super juicy and hot and what makes it good is the thin skin that wraps around the meat and juices - that skin can't be too thick or too thin either. and I believe this place makes them right. The fourth dish I would order is the pan-fried dumplings. they are usually pretty good too. The services here are alright - I've been here many times and I feel like each time I get either very good service or just okay service but never really terrible. Beef Noodle Soup! Very tender meat. The broth was very good, too. I'm not one to drink all the soup in a bowl because the soup can be greasy at other places, but for this one, I did. And it was delicious. Also ordered the pan fried leek dumpling. It came out a little bit after the noodles but it was really good as well. Parking is more plentiful than the location in Arcadia. This place is yummyyyy! The last time I went on a weeknight wasn't too busy with no wait, but was still a full house. HOT SPICY BEEF NOODLE SOUP - you must get it the hand torn noodles. The soup was really tasty and the beef was tender. Not sure if I would consider this the best place I've had it, but it was a good, solid bowl for sure. BEEF ROLLS - seriously, soo good here. I think I like it the best here. The roll is perfectly crispy and not soggy at all. The beef to onion is a good ratio and the sauce inside is not overly sweet and not overwhelming. PAN FRIED DUMPLINGS - sososo goo, so juicy, so hot! This is a definite must here for sure! DAN DAN MIEN - this was good, but not the best. I got it with the hand torn noodles, and it was my fault for not mixing it early enough but the noodles ended up sticking to each other and texture was a little weird. Yes, the beef roll is great, and you probably shouldn't come to 101 without ordering it. It's essentially a crispy pancake topped with slices of tender beef, yummy sauce, and gobs of cilantro "rolled" together for handy eating. Aside from their signature dish, they serve up--you guessed it--plenty of noodles, soups, and dumplings to distract you from your protein-pancake. We tried the Zha Jiang Mian ("fried sauce noodle"), the spicy beef noodle soup, and a "three-item" dumpling dish, which contained egg and some other greens. The Zha Jiang Mian was okay. Maybe it's because I've had it at about 4 different places this past month, so the one here wasn't anything special, although the beef noodle soup was very good: the broth contained just a hint of spiciness while slices of tender beef and succulent noodles were devoured into my tummy. As for the dumplings, lets just say you shouldn't order anything that doesn't indicate what's inside. "Three-item" anything is usually a mish-mash of excess ingredients they have no use for. Anyways, it wasn't terrible, and the egg/greens combination was probably a healthier option, but I wouldn't re-order it next time. Coming at lunch-time will probably require a short wait as the place isn't very big, but the roll is worth it. They mainly speak Mandarin, but I also overheard some Cantonese. No worries though, as the English competency of the servers is higher than most other restaurants in the area. So it's been quite awhile since I've posted a review, and I feel bad for not keeping up with it all. Life happens though...my review partner is now gone (divorcing her as you read) and life must go on. So here's my first review in too long. ========================= I was introduced to this place by a friend and was instantly hooked. The beef roll is where its at. When I went here for the first time we ordered a wide range of things but the beef roll is the item of choice when I come here now. This place is cash only so make sure to visit the ATM before heading here. Service can be spotty, but its a Taiwanese place where English speakers aren't their main customers. By the way, one roll can be perfect for 2 people, unless you're a gutton like me and want to save some for later. If you recalled, I often go to Asian restaurants and order the same thing over and over, this is one of those places. So, park your car and give the beef rolls a try, whether your about to go bowl a set or just finished one, you won't be sorry. So for now, live well, but eat better. read more

This place should really be called "Dumpling Express" because their dumplings and pot stickers totally outshine their noodle dishes. We ordered the pork pot stickers and pork dumplings (not the shu gow) and they were the best things we had that night. This may not be a good place to go if you don't eat beef, because most of the noodle options are beef, and most of the good reviews on here are about their beef noodle soups and beef roll. Following the advice of other yelpers, my friend ordered the spicy beef noodles but said they weren't spicy at all, he had to add 3 spoonfuls of chili sauce to give it some heat. I had the same problem with my pork and eggplant noodles...they were really bland and had no sauce or soup to go with it, so I had to add my own chili sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar just to give it some flavor! I tried a bite of both the beef roll and the chicken roll to compare, I thought the chicken was just slightly better, probably bc I prefer chicken in most things...but honestly, neither was anything to rave about. The service was really slow because it's a small place and every table was packed. A different person came to our table each time, so I didn't even know who to ask for our check. After several failed attempts to flag someone down, I eventually had to get out of my seat and find a random waitress to ask for our bill. The women who work here don't seem to speak a ton of English but service is quick and they hustle and bustle. There is usually a wait but never intolerably long. Every time I am in the SGV I crave asian food. Whether it be Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, if it's asian I crave it and usually when in this area. This time it was Taiwanese that would have satisfied this craving. I asked my fellow Yelpers where should we go to get some good Taiwanese grub. Although this place was out of the way relative to where we were staying we went anyways. We ordered 4 dishes to feed ourselves. 3 item cold platter - Seasoned sea vegetable (seaweed); a mix of soy beans, tofu, mustard greens and peanuts; pig's ears cooking in soy sauce mixed with cilantro and tofu strips. Great appetizer dish that was in a nice portion too. I would say it would happily feed 2 or 3 people as an appetizer. This was obviously pre-made because it was brought out to us immediately once our order was placed. I do recommend this dish. Boiled vegetable dumplings - This was okay, I ordered this because it was my only vegetarian option. It wasn't terrible but it was not memorable. There was more dough to the dumpling than filling. The lackluster filling was made from the usual mix of glass noodles, cabbage and tofu. Sinbala had better vegetarian dumplings. To jazz up the dumplings' flavor I stuffed it myself with some chili and the pickled vegetables that are complimentary. By the way the pickled vegetables are really good, very salty but tasty nonetheless, in may case they saved me from my boring dumplings. Beef wrap/roll - My husband loved it. He ate half and a few hours later he finished the other half. If he finishes the leftovers that means it's a winner. Fried shrimp and pork dumplings - See description of the beef wrap/roll, same thing happened so another win. The food does come out a little slow but I look at it as they are making fresh food, and fresh food takes time. Cash only so be prepared. If this was the only place to get Taiwanese food I would come back but there are so many other places that I want to try but I wouldn't complain if I did come back here. True to their name, 101 Noodle Express is holding a clinic on noodles. Their handmade noodles are seriously legit. I'm getting schooled just thinking about the soft, delicious texture of those bad boys. The beef noodle soup apart from the noodles was solid, although not the best I've had, but the noodles elevate the dish to a special must-try. Same goes for the Dalu noodles. Def get something noodly. As for the beef roll, it was pretty good, but I think they overloaded the thing with cilantro. Late night outing with my Brother- in-law on a Sunday night. We ordered the soup dumplings, both the crab and the pork; the fried lamb dumplings and the Dan Dan noodles. Soup dumplings were good, the pork ones are way better in my opinion than the crab. Crab tasted a little off. Dan Dan Noodles were good but not really spicy like advertised. But the star of the meal was the Fried Lamb dumplings! They were the heat! Juicy and full of flavor, I could have eaten 2 plates by myself! Definitely worth a visit and they are open late. We saw a line out the door and were curious. It was 100 degree day, so the chilled cucumbers that were just a little tart, a little sweet and just a hint of chilies were very refreshing. The beef roll came next. Essentially, it's a giant crepe. They put green onions, cilantro and beef on it before rolling it up and cutted like a pinwheel sandwich. The bread was warm and crispy with a pleasant chew. The beef was aromatic with star anise and sliced paper thin. The tender unctuous goodness of the meat was amazing. The fresh green onion and cilantro framed the flavors very nicely. They had a huge selection of dumpling flavors. We decided to sample the classic and ordered the shrimp and pork dumplings. The skin of dumpling had a great springy texture. The pork was melt in the mouth tender and they put a whole fresh shrimp in every dumpling and it added a rich sweetness as well as a nice bounce to every juicy bite. The second time I ended up here, I enjoyed my meal a lot more. Since I wasn't feeling up for consuming large amounts of cilantro that night, I decided to try the beef & beef tendon noodles; my friend, Herumi B., ordered the ox tail noodles. Both were so good! My beef pieces were super tender, and the tendon was well cooked. The soup base was a little lighter than I expected for Chinese beef noodles, but it wasn't wholly detracting. Herumi's ox tail was one of the best I've had in recent memory, I'm definitely going to order that next time I go. It's so good that they're open until 1am daily! This is a pretty small joint right off the 10 freeway on Valley. I work nearby and drive by this place on my home so I regularly go here for a late night bite. The recipe seems pretty authentic, but I'm not a native so I wouldn't know. All I know is that I like the food and it's satisfying. I almost get a chinese version of "family diner" kind of vibe... maybe because there's always a family when I come here. The interior's nothing fancy. Not disgusting, but definitely could use a little polishing up. The service is... not very nice or polite, but the ladies get the job done. I definitely don't feel too welcomed, but I come here for the food. My usual is the Dandan noodle (hand torn) and pork dumpling. Can't go wrong with that. The texture of the noodle is definitely different from your typical Ramen or Pho that most people are more fond of. It's a little more thicker and cooked through, but it goes well with the meat and veggie slicing. The dumpling is what you would expect from a typical Chinese joint, but who can say no to fresh steamed dumplings. The juicy meat of the hot dumpling is definitely worth a try --- they always make it fresh so it's always hot and juicy when served. My usual To-Go is the beef roll. As many people have already mentioned, this thing is pretty awesome. It's almost like a burrito, but with Chinese flavors and herbs. It's definitely filling so it's definitely something you can share with a friend or two. The food is not amazing, but it's definitely good. Like the servers... it gets the job done. I find it kinda disappointing that an important dish which is the beef noodle soup for a Taiwanese place was the least favorite of our dinner. The dish had like maybe two large sub par pieces of bok choy. Beef quality was not that. I know it's not suppose to be the best but at least have a good broth. The broth I always thought was essential but it honestly was bland or like straight up water not enough time or overly boiled the beef bones purely to be frugal. Sadly, don't get the dish here thus why I knocked off a start cause it's a key dish. I have to say what saved them is the beef wrap. The meat was yummy and the "pancake" wasn't doughy or too early. I definitely enjoyed the flavoring of the meat which is a stark contract from their beef noodle soup. We also got the xiao long bao. It was extra soupy and I liked it. Two words... Beef Rolls! De-fricken-licious! They are big and good. The plate comes with two rolls cut into six large pieces. We tried to get them to cut one order into ten pieces, but to no avail so we ordered two orders. It was laughable as the tiniest, petite girl at the table grabbed one of the two extra pieces immediately after she tasted the BR. I was bummed out cause I wanted it! LOL. But, unfortunately for her, the two pieces filled her up and she wasn't able to try all the other dishes and dumplings that we ordered! It's a bit strange as the dumplings come in orders of 10, yet, normally the biggest table is for only 6. If I was there advisor, I'd recommend they reduce the dumplings down to 4, so they can reduce the price of the dish and so diners can order more variety of dumplings. They brought in two large round tables, specially for our party of 20 since we knew the dumplings came in orders of 10. We were lucky one of our members spoke the same dialect as the restaurant, otherwise it would have been way tougher and she also made the reservation for us. Thanks Teri! I love these places that make your dumplings to order. But I also love Din Tai Fung as well. Are these as good or better than DTF? Ummmm... I suppose I still give the edge to DTF for the boiled/steamed dumplings, BUT... if you love/prefer potstickers... this place and the Noodle House are my preference cause DTF doesn't sell'em. I'd have to give a slight nod to the Noodle House for potstickers as they have more variety of them. But they are excellent here, without question. My favs for the dumplings was the pork/shrimp and the pumpkin and shrimp dumplings. I also really enjoyed the potstickers and would have ordered more, but there was some resistance by a couple members at the table who wished to avoid fried foods. Because of our large number at our table, we got a great sampling of the food here. Next time I go here if in a party of four, I'll of course order the BR, an order of potstickers, a noodle dish and a soup dish, probably the beef tendon soup noodle dish. The portions are generous and that will be more than enough food for 4 and it would cost us less than $10 each I'd estimate. The service was very friendly and above average, but we had someone who spoke Chinese with them. We had two tables, ours of 10 and we had a couple of no shows so a table of 8 next to us and their bill was a little cheaper but they had quite a few less dishes. The BR is 5 stars, the dumplings/noodles/soups I'd give them a 4 for taste, freshness, value and quality. One of the most overlooked things about a restaurant is the condiments at the table. Here, it was excellent... 100% sesame oil, black vinegar, chili oil, soy sauce and more. I rarely see sesame oil at the table anymore, so it was so great to see it here. This also leads to reviewers who don't take advantage of the condiments and thereby under rate the dumplings as bland. I prefer to have lots of sauces and spices and condiments so that I can choose which flavors I want to compliment my various dumplings and noodle dishes. I just wish Chinese restaurants would place real pepper grinders on the tables, but none of them do. It's so sad that L.A. Chinatown restaurants cannot compare to the many places in the San Gabriel Valley places for dumplings... But, like this place, they are certainly worth the drive. I went for lunch last week with the parental units and everything we had was great! This is what we ordered and I've included the item numbers: 1) Beef Roll #46 -- Amazing! I normally don't like beef rolls because they're usually too dry but this was excellent! And the bread was flaky, had excellent texture and not too greasy. 2) Beef & Beef Tendon Noodles/Rice Noodles #30 -- The beef and beef tendon were cooked really well and the soup had a nice flavor. And the noodles were al dente. 3) Pork Fried Dumpling #13 -- The waitress tried to push the Pumpkin Shrimp Pork Dumpling but I didn't want to veer. So I stuck with my original choice of the pork and was not disappointed. The dumplings were fried to perfection and the inside had so much juice I had to eat it with a spoon -- almost XLB style. OK, not everything is good here. Often a wait and the service is not the best. But some of the items on their menu are really well done. First, the famous beef rolls. You can find beef rolls in almost every other block in 626 and some of them, I think, are just as good. But I do like their version very much. They put just the right amount of cilantro and sweet bean sauce, which compliment the flaky wrap/bread and generous sliced beef very well. The beef roll here is hearty and very filling. Next, the spicy beef noodle. Growing up all my friends loved my mom's beef noodle. This place's spicy beef noodle reminds me of the taste of mom's. The beef is tender and soup flavorful. Yum. The dumplings are also good. I always have a hard time getting my 6-year-old to eat enough vegetable. Dumplings here will do the trick. The skin/wrap has the right texture of handmade wrap. There are many different types of fillings, many are wholesome and nutritious. Get the combo dumplings and we are set. Also tried some of the other dishes but was not terribly impressed. It was really late, pass 10PM, and husband was craving noodle... So, Yelp to the rescue... YES... The beef roll is awesome... Even for me who's usually not into Niu Ruo Juan Bing. We also ordered lamb noodle and oxtail with handcut noodle... Also a plate of dumplings... Yeaa... there were only the two of us... and yes, it was a LOT of food. The fish dumplings were pretty decent. The lamb noodle was sooo good. The handcut noodle was a bit bland... but the oxtail was well flavored... overall... a solid 4 stars. The Beef Rolls here are stellar!! I've taken some food to-go from here previously and it wasn't as good as when you sit down and eat it fresh. The Beef Rolls were so much better fresh! The Spicy Beef Rice was spicy and very good too as were the Pan Fried Pork Dumplings. There were so many choices that it was hard to decide. Next time, I think I'll get the Beef Rolls again and the Minced Pork looked good and the Onion Pancake looked delish too! The service is less than average and you have to really remind them to refill your water since this type of food will make you thirsty. 101 Noodle Express has become my go-to for late-night Chinese noshing since they're open until 1am. CASH ONLY I still have yet to try most of the menu because of how extensive it is, but you won't go wrong with any of their specialties. The pork and shrimp dumplings are a standby, though the variations of these (leek, wild vegetable, pumpkin, etc.) are also quite good. You get 10 of these for pretty cheap, and they're big. Pan-fried or steamed, I prefer the fried. Nice and juicy. Beef roll is also a popular menu item, and it does not disappoint. You also won't go wrong trying the pork roll. Noodle soups are pretty good, as well. I've enjoyed the beef noodle soup as well as their lamb soup. Get the hand-torn noodles; they're better. Beef or Pork rolls with cilantro is amazing, I hate cilantro on everything, I will spend 45 min taking each leaf out of Pho if I forget to ask to not put it in there. But by some stroke of dark magic, the cilantro tastes good, or can't really taste it at all. The hand pulled noodles are great as well, dumplings are good too, maybe not Din Tai Fung good, but good enough. So I got the Dan Dan noodles with fat noodles (I would go with skinny noodles next time) Not a lot of places can make the sauce for it and this place doesn't disappoint. Next up, we ordered the boiled pork and pumpkin dumplings. Unfortunately, the kitchen made a mistake and pan fried it, we just took it anyways. This was my least favorite. It didn't have enough pumpkin (perhaps I'm just not a big meat eater) The skin was way toooo thick. It was so thick it shouldn't be called dumplings, more like baos. Next was the famous beef roll. I can see why it is very popular because it is a huge portion for a small price. My favorite beef roll is from Yi Mei in Monterey Park, but they closed down. 101 beef roll is pretty good but I wished they slather on more sauce. read more

101 usually does not let me down. I've been coming to 101 for all my beef pancake wrap needs for a long time now. The fact that it's a chain also helps because there's usually one wherever I go - LA, OC, etc. This makes beef pancake wraps sinfully convenient. I came here last weekend with two friends shortly before noon - there was no wait, although the restaurant was busy. I don't know if it was just the day I went, but the restaurant got much busier after we sat down. We ordered the beef pancake roll (obvi), the dan dan noodles with minced pork, and the steamed leek shrimp pork dumplings. Everything hit the spot. I love the beef pancake rolls here. I recently read on chowhound that some people thought they were going down hill. Granted, I'm such a loyalist to 101 that I haven't ventured out to other places, but I found the pancake sufficiently crispy and the beef, scallions, and cilantro heavenly. The dan dan noodles were good too. Excellent portion size given the low price of $6. There's a nice peanut-y sauce with a little bit of chili since it's Sichuan influenced. Both of dining companions actually liked the noodles the most (although I'm obviously partial to the rolls). The dumplings I thought were the most average out of everything we got, although they were still good. They're pretty sizable dumplings. Our order came with ten, and each was filled to the brim with a mix of leek, shrimp, and pork. I imagine their fried dumplings probably taste better (crispy, oily, what's not to like), but we were already sort of treating ourselves with the noodles and rolls that we thought we'd try to go "healthy." Note you can also buy their frozen dumplings by the bag and take them home with you. Service: Quick, efficient 626 style service. Better if you come with someone who speaks Mandarin, but you'll survive without. Bottom line: Beef pancake rolls going downhill? I don't think so, but I'd be happy to try any other place people think is better. All in all a good stop for decent Chinese food. read more

Cash only! But there is an atm inside. Get the beef roll. Put a shit ton of chili oil on it. You will not regret it. It also tastes bomb the next day so you know it's great. I also get number 98 which is the 3 appetizer plate. It's a mixture of a bunch of vegetables and it's a cold dish but also bam put some chili oil and it's bomb. The fried rice was a bit wet so don't get that. The beef noodle soup is okay too. I would honestly only get the beef roll and 3 vegetable appetizer dish. Food is good but the customer service can be horrendous. Came here last night and ordered two items. My friend and I kept waiting for our second dish, the onion pancake to show up. I remember the waitress repeated back what we wanted but we didn't get it at the end. The rudest server (I wish I know when she's off so I'll come on the days she is off) that they have grabbed the order receipt and scrunched it up in her hand when she brought out our first order. She saw that we were almost finished with our food and brought the check without us asking for it. And that's when we saw that our onion pancake was not entered. I told the lady we kept waiting for our onion pancake, I can't believe it wasn't entered in the system. She asked me if I wanted to order it now. Really? Wtf, you just brought us our check to get rid of us. My friend wanted to give them another dollar for tip but I stopped them. Which would have been an over 20% tip. Honestly, they didn't even deserve a tip. But we do come here every now and then and didn't want to make it an uncomfortable eating experience.
