We came here for a nice brunch during my stay in Boston and I'm really glad I came here. It's Tucktaway in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood which by itself was very fun to walk through and look around. Inside the ambiance is really nice and feels very upscale. Everything is pristine and decorated very nicely. We both got eggs Benedict, staple for me and we shared a breakfast as well as we were starving that day. The asparagus was a nice touch and the presentation of the meal was done very well. Over I really enjoyed this restaurant and would highly recommend it as a brunch spot if you're in the area. I would love I would love to come back and try the dinner menu as well. read more

Today my wife and I were looking for a spot to have a quick drink after a nice walk around the city. She mentioned that 1928 was a place she had been looking forward to trying. We walked in and the place was packed--great ambiance and amazing energy. We were hoping to find a couple of bar seats, but everything was taken. Suddenly, the host approached us and immediately offered her assistance. She was very friendly and sincere, letting us know that waiting for bar seats could take a few minutes, but she could have a table ready for us in about two minutes if we were willing to sit. Her style and hospitality sold us on the table right away. We ended up having a wonderful dinner, a really nice glass of Prosecco, two glasses of red wine, and a full meal that made our night unbelievable. Interior is stunning. The layout is a bit of a maze but that works because each section had a different aesthetic. So much thought must have gone into the richness of the decor. The tuna sashimi was delicious, though technically was charred so wasn't exactly what I expected for sashimi. The pinkney pear cocktail tasted artificially sweet and the Prosecco just diluted it but the espresso martini had a nice strong coffee flavor and wasn't too creamy. Overall I would say the food was very good but a little overpriced considering the items were all quite basic. I think the menu could be more innovative and the service a little better. Compared to comparable restaurants in Boston I'd expect more attentive and professional service. Everything went smoothly just not five stars. We were trying 1928 for the first time for my husband's birthday. It came highly recommended for its cool, swanky vibe. Sadly we were brought straight through the cool, swanky bar area, past a cool, swanky dining area, and back to a super quiet, geriatric feeling back room that looked like a library. We were so disappointed. The drinks and food were delicious but the vibe was the exact opposite of what we wanted/needed. We visited 1928 Beacon Hill for a romantic date night and were deeply disappointed. 1. Food: My partner ordered the burger and requested it well done. He received a burger that was blackened and overcooked. He felt uncomfortable saying anything to the waiter because he felt the waiter was unfriendly. He left a burnt piece of the burger on the side of his otherwise empty plate which went unnoticed. The one bright spot of our meal was the lobster tortilini, which was excellent. 2. Service: Oh boy. We were strongly disappointed in the quality of service given the high price point of the meal. We have gone to other restaurants in Boston at a similar price point and received incomparably better service. Our server was not particularly friendly, when we received our food he did not come back to check on us. The next time he returned to our table was over half an hour later, after we had finished the meal for at least 10 minutes, and were just sitting there with empty plates. We were annoyed by the fact that the two tables next to us were frequently being visited (at least 4 times during the span of our meal). It was particularly strange that the table next to us received multiple rounds of drinks, meanwhile, no one ever asked if we wanted our drinks refilled after they were finished. Finally, once our waiter did return to collect our plates, he did not ask if we wanted dessert and just put the dessert menu in our hands without saying anything (we at least expected some pilote banner, or asking if we wanted drink refills... anything!?) After I ordered dessert, he brought my affogato and the check without saying a word (and did not pour the coffee onto the ice cream...which might be a bit nit-picky, but again at this price range it was just a very strange lack of hospitality). 3. Ambiance: I thought the restaurant overall had a pretty cozy vibe. My partner was not impressed with the table we were given, which was right by the door. Maybe our table location is why the waiter forgot about us. TLDR; Very expensive with bad service. Pretty restaurant, with mixed reviews on the food...maybe come here for a drink before a reservation at somewhere nicer. read more

This was previously by favorite restaurant in Boston! Looks like they got a new menu as of March 2025 (I was just there in December and January) and had an upcoming reservation next week. I noticed the Steak Frites price increased from $34 to $53, which was my favorite menu item there. FYI prices on yelp are inaccurate. Totally understand that prices are increasing everywhere, but nearly 2x more and to not notify people with existing reservations is crazy! The vibe in the restaurant is awesome, but not worth that price for it. You're better off going to a real steak house for $53 dollar Steak Frites. read more

Great spot in Beacon Hill! I moved out of this area at the start of the pandemic so it was great to come back and try a new spot. As others have noted, the waitstaff is lovely. The hostess also let us sit 20-25 minutes earlier than our reservation because it was pouring outside - so kind!!! We had oysters to start. I had the scallops and mushroom risotto for my main course and I can't stop thinking about it. SO GOOD!!! I will definitely be coming back here soon! read more

Most of the food was ok, but nothing special. Plating was uninspired. The oysters weren't cold enough. It's food you've had elsewhere, prepared no differently, and certainly no better. Every single thing we ordered, we've also ordered in restaurants in Paris and NYC that absolutely blow away what 1928 is serving, for the same price. But what really brought the entire experience down was the mediocre service. The restaurant is understaffed, except for the front of house which was overstaffed with girls who constantly monitor tables while carrying iPads. Not discreet at all. Waiting times for visits from the wait staff were long and drawn out. It took nearly an hour from when we sat down until we were finally eating something. No bread was served or offered. No one we encountered exhibited much enthusiasm for their job or for food in general. A great restaurant is staffed with professionals who are knowledgeable and excited about the business of feeding people. This place didn't seem to have anyone who actually likes being in hospitality. No one came by to refill our water from the bottle we ordered. No one asked how anything was, or if we needed anything else after the entrees were served. We had to flag down a waiter for more wine. Empty plates sat on the table for ages. No one folded my wife's napkin when she left to use the restroom. All the simple little touches that make a dinner experience great were nonexistent. Oysters came out long after a salad. Always serve oysters first guys. Also, how is it a steakhouse exactly? There are only 2 steaks on the menu. The sides menu is sparse. The dessert menu is like an obligatory afterthought. There are more pasta dishes than steaks or chops. And what is so "1928" about a place that plays generic 2000s house music? Play some jazz or a mix that actually meets the expectations of a place called 1928 Beacon. The marketing of this place wants you to think it's some kind of glamorous speakeasy throwback steakhouse. The reality is, it's a basic restaurant with basic food served by not enough people, who are clearly too overworked and probably underpaid to be enthusiastic about doing their jobs. read more

I recently googled "Persian Restaurants near me," and 1928 popped up. When I looked at the menu, it obviously wasn't Persian, but I later learned its location was once a Persian restaurant. The very next day, I met up with a friend to dine at an establishment in Beacon Hill. My friend wasn't happy with the menu and coincidentally suggested we try 1928. I took it as a sign, so we went. Here's how that went down: Greeted by a handsome but less than welcoming man who asked, in the most annoyed fashion, if we had a reservation. It then took him several minutes to see if he could accommodate us in his otherwise empty restaurant. I get it: you prefer to greet diners with reservations but treat walk-ins like vagrants (P.S. My friend was the only other diner I saw that day). But I didn't let Mr. Greeter get me down because the interiors were so breathtakingly spectacular. I so wanted to think of 1928 as my new Boston go-to, a place to meet friends, family, and bring clients. While reading the menu, a kind person came and offered a choice of waters. Oh, how fancy ... not! After a long walk on a hot day, all I wanted was a soft drink. I waited 15 minutes when my flat $5.00 soda finally appeared (another $5.00 for each refill). The waiter came over to ask if we had questions about the menu and delivered this warning: "Just want to let you know our menu is small plates, so I suggest if you are super hungry you order the Bolognese." I was hungry, and Bolognese was not what I wanted on that hot day. We ordered salads, and I ordered the halibut. I don't recall ordering the side of "bland." The beet salad consisted of two or three boiled beets garnished with a few pomegranate seeds, no evidence of the pistachio praline, maple sage vinaigrette, and whipped goat cheese listed on the menu. After one bite, my halibut became a DYI project, so I decided to take it home and season/fix it. While we were in the dining room, a few young hostesses seemed to be studying us: they might have been coat check girls, but it was too hot for coats, so they probably made fun of guests instead. My friend and I left the restaurant, laughing our asses off and thinking WTF was that? Beautiful interiors, but bad food and a bad experience. read more

Also, our waitress was rude, probably having a bad day. Service was very slow and we were rushed at the end to pay. We had a reservation for 5 and were seated at a table for 4. The hostess said sorry and said she would help accomodate. There were other parties of 5 at the restaurant seated at tables for 6 people. When the table next to us left (2 tables of 2) we asked if we could pull one of the tables over but were told there was another reservation (totally understand). When the next reservation showed (after 9pm) it was a party of 2 and both tables were given to them. Overall, experience could have been a lot better. 1928 has a loyal following and prime location in Beacon Hill, but for anyone thinking of trying 1928 for the first time, there are bettwr alternatives in the area. read more

The first part of the evening did not start well due to poor customer service attitude and a very uncomfortable table location. Thankfully, it did not end there as our concerns were addressed and our (second) server was much more attentive and we were moved to a much more comfortable location. We were grateful for the response. In terms of the food: the tuna tartare was good, and my husband enjoyed the halibut, although the accompanying vegetables lacked flavor and may have been slightly undercooked. I ordered the scallop risotto dish and while the flavor was good , I was a bit surprised that I only got three scallops. I didn't inquire about it then, but upon returning home, I was curious about others' overall experiences at this restaurant. Interestingly, I came across photos of the scallop dish showing a range of 4-5 scallops, with one lucky customer in 2023 getting eight scallops. I wish I had taken a photo of my dish to post here but suffice it to say that for the price, three scallops (of similar size to the ones in the photos) is inadequate, even if it is 2025. We had room for dessert (never usually happens after an app+ dinner out), but went elsewhere. Due to the mishap at the start of our visit, the restaurant covered some drinks, which was a pleasant surprise and one we appreciated. Their course correction and responsiveness earned them 3 stars. More scallops and better well-rounded side dishes for the halibut dish would have edged them closer to 4 stars. read more

We had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for a while and finally made it this past Saturday evening. Everything was exceptional. The decor and atmosphere in general separate it from most other restaurants. Sort of an elevated old-school speakeasy type of vibe. Top end service (worthy of an even higher price-point). We started with the cauliflower & sushito appetizer which was outstanding and way beyond expectation. I then had the short rib which was perfect. I had a glass of cote du rone ($16 bucks...tasted like $25). I'd say 1928 was easily in my top 5 for the year (and we eat out a lot). Looking forward to our next visit! read more

I was lucky enough to be treated to a birthday dinner here by my sister. She was a bit iffy at first from some previous reviews she read, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. The ambience was so cool, retro and hip. There was great Saturday night energy, but it wasn't overwhelming and noisy, we could still carry on a conversation. We didn't order huge quantities of food, but the food that we had was outstanding, fresh oysters, served perfectly and then scallops with shiitake mushrooms and risotto. A great cocktail selection was made with obviously fresh ingredients nothing pre-mixed or chemical tasting. Our server Sebastian could not have been more attentive, friendly, or knowledgeable. After waiting to be seated for our reservation once we sat and started to place apps our waiter letting us know the oven is not working for the night at 6:30 pm!!!!! Tuna tar tar for an app was good but nothing spectacular- no seasoning such as sesame oil or sesame seeds. Bummed! I got Bucatini carbonara and was completely unsatisfied. That is one of my favorite dishes and it came out with no flavor i mean literally tasted like plain unbuttered pasta- i had my partner try it and we both were not happy. He got the lobster tortellini- had we known it came swimming in sherry sauce NOT vodka sauce like stated on the menu he wouldn't have ordered. It was a sherry soup with 4 raviolis on top. This is a cute place and I bet if I kept coming back I'd give them more stars. I came here on a Tuesday with my restaurant club. We pick a new restaurant each month and sample the cuisine and soak in the atmosphere. I loved the look of this place. Dimly light, very tastefully decorated, and some of the coolest plates and dinnerware I've ever seen. Also, the staff was friendly and prompt and I have no complaints there. We ordered quite a bit of different things and I have to say the standout was the Tuna Tartare. We could've ordered about 4 more of those. Some of the other things we ordered were Bolognese, Cacio e Pepe, Short Ribs, Beet Salad, Deviled Eggs, Shrimp Cocktail, the Roasted Brussel Sprouts and some French Fries. All had great flavor but we noticed that the pasta was served lukewarm and didn't have much sauce at all. I'm not sure if it was an off night or if there was something else going on in the kitchen but we felt the pasta is typically one of the easier dishes to prepare so we weren't sure what happened there. In addition, the place changed dynamic the later it got. The music got louder and quite eclectic, from Blondie, to Etta James, to Depeche Mode to Kenny Loggins to Def Leppard. Along with that, the place seemed to completely fill up around the bar area, with people standing around spilling into the dining area. So it got a little cramped and was more difficult to converse. All in all it's a lovely place and I hope it succeeds. I will try again at some point. read more

I have never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant/bistro. I live here in Boston and have for years. I had two friends in town, and I was acting as tour guide. We had just finished a walking tour of Beacon Hill and wanted to get some appetizers and drinks. It was about three pm on a Saturday afternoon (11/15/25). We asked the hostesses if we could sit at a table in the bar area (the bar was full) and order appetizers and drinks. We were told the kitchen was closed until 4 pm but we could put our names in for the table in the bar area if we planned to order a full dinner. We already had dinner plans for later in the day so we said we would wait for seats to open up at the bar. The bartender was a piece of work! Haughty is the only word I can think of to describe him---and that is not a word I ever use! When we asked if he could save bar seats for us if a party of three were to leave, he kind of looked down his nose at us. He was very unwelcoming and not accommodating at all. When a couple at the bar overheard us, they told us they were about to leave, and we could have their seats. As soon as the bartender overheard this he put "Reserved" signs at their seats and smirked (yes smirked!) at us. It was such a bad vibe. So, if you like being treated like dirt, or are in a way a masochist, please go to 1928. We went down the street to the Liberty Hotel and had a lovely time and were treated as welcome guests. We came on a Sunday, unaware that they were serving brunch as the only menu outside was their regular menu. The restaurant is very dark and the tables are rather close together. We got a table next to a couple and I was given an awful glance, almost as if my seat was inconveniencing the other guest. The staff was very bubbly, kind, and quick to get us what we needed. The music choice was interesting and did not fit the vibe of the restaurant. Popular pop songs from the Weeknd and Charlie Puth were playing that were not the most appropriate for the variety of guests the restaurant had. The food came out pretty quickly. I ordered fish and chips, which came out hot, clearly just fried. The fish was pretty good, but the fries were nothing special. They reminded me of fast food fries. The coleslaw that came with it looked really unappetizing and I ended up not touching it. My mom ordered the lobster bisque and said it was pretty good. As we were looking around, though, we both agreed that their omelets and eggs Benedict, as well as most other standard breakfast options, did not look super appealing. I can't say for how they tasted, but it looked like something I could make better at home. In general, the food was solely "pretty good" but I don't think the price fit what we got. I got there before my friend and sat at the bar with a book. I had some oysters and a cocktail, and everything was excellent, including the service. Day 1 had a very strong performance! They're still in the soft-open stage so bar bites and cocktails with a plan to have the full menu launching the Monday after Thanksgiving. Initial review is very good. A few hiccups but nothing I wouldn't expect on a first day in service. Cocktails were delish! Very welcome addition to Beacon Hill after a few years with this space being vacant. It has a great, cozy vibe that will be a lot of fun through the winter. The space was very well-decorated and fit a lot of people pretty well. There was a back room that had curtains, indicating it may be for private events at some point. Definitely something I'd look into if they're offering. The host said they'll be rolling out brunch in the coming weeks. read more

1928 is the year the owners father was born and I'm grateful because this restaurant is amazing. The staff and food are top notch. The decor is unique in that each room is different making it over all eclectic but cozy. We were seated in the back room. The meal start to finish was great. The deviled eggs come four half's to a plate and the warm olives are great on a cold night. The sautéed mushrooms all enjoyed as well. For entries we all enjoyed our meals. We ordered the beef short ribs, the halibut and the half chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly, tender and delicious. The short ribs were amazing and the halibut I'm told was very good. Most of the menu is gluten free which for me gives it 5 starts alone. A rare gem to find in Boston. I definitely want to return and try the gf pasta dishes.
