Thanks for your direct response, Kyle, finally. Not sure how I can respond to your comments, so I'll just write an update. You can have all your employees and friends pretending to be customers misled people on LittleRedBook, but I have to clarify a few things here. First of all, I was never complaining that we cannot have Jiugongge soup base sitting outside. The first waiter had explained the reason to us nicely, so we just switched to sit inside without saying a word. Second, when we went upstairs, we sat in a small room, with only 4 tables (including us), and we stayed no more than 15 min in total, by the time we left, those 3 tables were still eating, and I didn't say anything while walking out, I don't think people who are sitting outside could hear what happened in that small room. Your comments about we made you lost 10 tables due to our loud voice and without wearing mask is obviously another misleading point to other people. Third, my family and I, including our little girl, were all wearing masks while we were not at our table in the public area. The person you were talking about, who was not wearing mask, and had inappropriate gesture to the waitress when he left the room, is just a friend that we were eating with. He is an adult, to whom I have neither control of nor any responsibility of his own behavior. This is my personal review talking about my experience and how I felt at your restaurant, you cannot accuse ME for what other people did just because we tried to have lunch together. Not to mention that I had no idea of what he did, since I walked out the room first, I do not have eyes on my back, and again, it's not a super quiet environment, except random environment noise, I couldn't hear anything clearly when there's some distance apart. Last but not least, the main reason why we were not happy is because YOUR WAITRESS HAS NEVER LISTENED TO US. There are times when people go to a restaurant and would want to have some customization or some special request for different reasons, not all the times the request can be accommodated by the restaurant, I totally understand that, and am totally fine with it. But at least you can say "no" directly and give me a reason, then we can talk about other options. But the fact is, your waitress had never answered our questions directly, even I asked million times, loudly, as you say, to make sure she heard me. Instead, she just kept pushing us into different options that are easier for her to accommodate, looking like she was trying to solve the problem, but without directly answer my questions at all. Maybe to your standard, that's good customer service, but that's not how I consider "being polite". Again, reviews are all subjective to each one's own feeling, you cannot just "attack" people because my standard is different than yours. I love Yelp, because it's a fair platform, where people can share their very own personal experiences and opinions without being easily manipulated like some other Chinese platforms. I am a big fan of hotpot so when I found out about this place I couldn't wait to try it. Unfortunately the experience didn't meet the expectation and we left disappointed. Our usual go-to place for hotpot is Hai Di Lao in Cupertino and that forms the basis of my comparison. I am surprised none of the other reviews mention Hai Di Lao since they are priced so similarly and they are both Szechuan style hotpot. Service: We came on a week night and the place didn't look too busy but there was nobody at the door to receive the guests so more and more people started just standing around by the door waiting to be seated. Eventually another guest flagged down a waitress to let her know that there were people waiting to be seated and that was when we finally were taken to a table. Hotpot itself is pretty self serviced but this being a premium hotpot restaurant judging by the price one would expect more than the minimal effort of service, that was not true. We asked one of the waiters about an ingredient in the soup and he didn't know, he said he was going to ask the kitchen but never came back with an answer. There were two waiters serving about a dozen tables which felt understaffed. Food: First the condiment/sauce bar was just a disaster. They were out of most of the condiments as well as some of the sauces. The containers looked like they'd been empty for a while because we are talking about bottom of the barrel bare here. Beef we ordered was good. The shrimp paste didn't taste chewy, the cuttlefish balls looked like they came from 99 Ranch's frozen section and tasted like rubber. The fish balls with fish roes also tasted like supermarket quality. The soup was alright, like other reviewers said, mild spicy is plenty spicy. The table was also not very well cleaned, it was sticky had some dirty spots that weren't wiped off. There was a vent above the table, I think, but it didn't seem to be working and the steam was constantly bellowing in our faces. Price: This is probably the biggest problem with this restaurant. We paid over $100 for two of us which is expensive for hotpot but that's around how much we paid at Hai Di Lao as well so we weren't all that surprised. However the quality of the service and the food definitely did not reflect the price point. I wonder if owner felt justified to charge such premium because it's on Castro? Bottom line is if this place wants to be competitive in the premium hotpot market then it needs a lot better service and food. read more

Overall: Delicious Chongqing-style hot pot experience, with fresh high-quality food and some nice additions to sweeten the deal. Portions are somewhat smaller than what I would expect for the price, but I'm willing to settle for a taste of home. Food: We selected the triple broth option: house special mala spicy base, mushroom base, and sauerkraut fish/mustard green base. All were delicious, but as someone whose family is from Chengdu I had a penchant for the spicy broth; medium spicy was perfect for us, with enough kick without requiring lots of bathroom time afterward (I recommend selecting to add the beef oil, which comes in a cute cow shape). All the meats (lamb, beef) and seafood (shrimp) we ordered were fresh. The veggies/noodles we ordered came in somewhat smaller portions than I would've expected at that price point. The sauce bar is standard self-serve fare, but the sesame balls and chicken feet were a nice touch. Service/environment: We went on a weekday night and the restaurant wasn't too busy. The staff is friendly and ordering is completed by QR code. This is a smaller chain restaurant with branches in mainland China, so they use an ordering system common there. It was very easy to flag down a staff member for extra help or to ask questions. As with most hot pot places, expect lots of background conversation and to leave smelling like hot pot broth. The restaurant is clean and well-maintained, albeit with somewhat gimmicky decor, which admittedly made me smile (specifically at the Chinese opera masks pinned on the wall). read more

Lol it is just like 2020 that I discover a fantastic hot outdoor dining experience, then literally the next day the governor of California issues stricter COVID guidelines and closes outdoor dining for at least the next couple of weeks. Located near the Caltrain station in Downtown Mountain View, 3 Kingdoms Hot Pot took over the spot of Hangen Chinese restaurant. They closed for a long time to remodel, and unfortunately the opening coincided with COVID. I admire their additional investment in setting up a very complete and safe outdoor dining experience. Initially I had some hesitation because of the small sample size of Yelp reviews. Everything turned out streamlined and well-organized, from the moment I called to make a reservation, to the end of our cozy dinner. I believe 3 Kingdoms Hot Pot is from Chongqing (which I described to my coworker as "the part of China that's famous for spicy food.") Teaspoon is located inside too, so you can conveniently get some soothing quality boba milk tea to accompany your fiery spicy hot pot. One of their specialties is the jiugongge (九宮格) hot pot, a very aesthetic hot pot split into 9 quadrants. Since larger sharing pots are not optimal for COVID, they have mini pots on individual portable gas stoves (split individual pots available too) 1) The pot - Non-spicy (chicken & pork, tomato, or mushroom): Everyone got chicken & pork which had a nice umami and herbal flavor. It comes with lots of stuff inside, including jujube, goji berries, and shiitake - Spicy (butter or oil; mild, medium, or spicy): I got the spicy... it was a satisfying spicy and peppercorns-heavy, to my liking. I'll admit I teared up a bit towards the end, and it felt like I was breathing fire into my mask afterwards 2) The toppings - Sauce bar: Large bowls of minced garlic, sesame oil, peanut sauce, green onion, plus more sauces available upon request - Lamb & beef combo: Good quality, big slices, cooks easily, tastes great with the broths - Soft beef: I don't know too much about this, but accordingly to fellow Yelpers it's a rare find and well done here. I did find it impressively tender - Shrimp paste: One of their specialties; it's pure shrimp and no flour. You scoop however much you want, and it soaks up the broth flavors nicely. Probably the best shrimp meatballs I've ever had - Fish tofu: Stuffed with lots of fish, surprisingly good - Tripe: I usually don't eat organs, but this was generously on the house, so we were adventurous and I actually liked it (keep in mind the texture is rather chewy) - Mushroom combo: Good variety ranging from enoki to large slides of oyster mushrooms - Veggie combo: An impressive assortment of veggies. If you like certain types of veggies, I suggest ordering separately. They have a generous amount of tong ho (茼蒿) which is somewhat of an acquired taste - Fish ball with roe: Standard but always tastes good - Udon: This came frozen and didn't completely defrost, so we had to stab it into sharable portions Tips and comments: - Menu is on a QR code. It's easiest if everyone puts all the orders on one phone. The servers come by to review and confirm your order - The menu selection is extensive. A couple items were sold out (must be hard to maintain inventory during COVID era), but there were definitely way more than enough - Portion sizes are impressive! Combo platters are a great way to sample lots of stuff - Yelpers have recommended ice jelly which looks like an intriguing dessert, but we were too full and it was a bit hard to tell from the picture what it looks like (from the thumbnail, it looked Meet Fresh -esque) - Price-wise, it's reasonable. Pre-tip total for 5 people was ~$170 and we couldn't finish all the food - Service is very friendly, professional, and attentive. Initially we ordered lots of stuff, and the server suggested we remove the duplicates which were already in our combo platters - COVID precautions well done: outdoor dining with tables spaced apart, a heater in the middle, servers wearing masks correctly, contactless ordering and payment. I hope they can survive on takeout :( - Napkins are in drawers on the sides of the table - Overall a very cultural dining experience. Some Yelpers have commented that it feels like dining in China; the hot pot is definitely a huge step up from your basic Boiling Point. It feels even more authentic with the servers dressed in traditional clothing and the festive red furniture Suggestions for the business: *A list of sauces (we couldn't find this, but when we asked for satay sauce, it was available) *Highlighting what's popular / specialties, since the menu can be abit overwhelming *The website linked to the QR code displays dishes in Chinese before the English name. We came here with high hopes since this was the last day before the COVID winter lockdown and we wanted to support local businesses at this challenging time. But we ended up having a terrible experience. The food was okay - the hotpot soup base was authentic, but the quality of the meat could have been better. The "tender fresh beef" wasn't tender enough and the lamb was good but not super fancy. The presentation of the meat platters was though very good. However, the service was terrible. We never got refills on our tea or the soup of the hotpot. We asked for a replacement of the fuel canister for our pot when we saw the pot wasn't really boiling but were told that there was still enough gas in it. So we ended up having a lukewarm "hot" pot until the end when we finally had it replaced. We gave the feedbacks to the restaurant but the waiter started arguing with us in front of other customers. This is during a pandemic but the outdoor seatings are way too close to each other. There was definitely not a 6-feet distance in between tables. The hand soap was running out inside one of the two restrooms. We told the restaurant but they still didn't refill the hand soap when we left. They said the hand soap dispenser was broken. The payment system was broken too. So we ended up waiting for half an hour just to get our credit card charged. read more
