This updated review is base solely on 1-how the store is handling COVID and 2-quality or rather lack of quality of some of their produce. The positive note is that 99 Ranch is handling COVID by having everyone in their stores wear masks (like the rest of our country) and that they have marked areas to show customers how far apart to stand from each other while in line to check out or while waiting in the hot foods line. The thing that they are or rather aren't doing, at least at this location, is limit the number of customers from being in the store at one time. Trader Joe's is great for keeping an eye on the number of customers coming and going into their stores to prevent too many people in a place at one time. Back in the day (80's) we used to pick and bag which (we used to only choose the best quality items...duh, right?) and how much of fruits and veggies that we wanted, they weren't prepackaged like they are now. Nowadays, we have to try to examine the bag of fruit or veggies, check for quality, and hope for the the best. I've noticed in mostly Asian markets, unwanted, low quality foods are mixed in with the passable quality foods just to sell it. I feel that it's sneaky and dishonest. This has happened to me many times now, but never with my gailan vegetables. The whole prepackaged bag was inedible. When I chose that bag I carefully looked at the veggies. The bottom of the stems were okay, and the leaves looked green. Unfortunately for me, when I emptied the bag of veggies, I saw that the leaves on all of the gailan had been "tasted" by insects for there were holes all over the leaves. Came here looking for the Lee's Sandwich Vietnamese Iced Coffee concentrate. I know Smart & Final in Pleasant Hill previously carried it but they recently stopped. I heard some Costco's have it but the Concord store didn't. Luckily, 99 Ranch has it in stock but only sells it individually for about $5 or $6. Very busy Asian supermarket with every thing an Asian household needs under the sun. This specific location is teeming with customers especially during its peak times 3-9 pm. I've since found that shopping during non-peak times with less customers is best for ones sanity. It's gets pretty frenetic especially during Lunar New Year. My absolute go to spot when planning a KBBQ night at home. I always go for their pork bulgogi and pre-sliced kobe-beef chuck which you can find in the slider freezer towards the back. If you want to make your friend's jealous of your amazing sushi skills then pick up their fresh tuna, fish roe, and everything else you'd need. I always go to this location to get my Chinese groceries. They have variety of things from snacks to food to household stuff. Price is very competitive and their food is always fresher than other Asian market. small bakery - inside the store which I do NOT recommended. There are bakeries much better than this one. Cooked food section - if you like roasted duck, or BBQ pork and some dim sum. Seafood section - you can find different kind of fish, crab, lobster here. Live or dead. Snacks section - all those pocky, kit kat, beef jerky, Chinese cookies....everything you can find here! They also have tasting during the weekends. This is my go to Asian grocery store. It's clean, organized, and very well stocked. I prefer this location over the Richmond one which is always crowded, chaotic, and much smaller. 99 Ranch is every Asian family's go to grocery store which has ample fresh produce, fruits, and a very large selection of meats and meat organs that you can't get at your traditional American grocery stores. I also get all my Asian spices, sauces, noodles, and veggies here. Though most of their prices beats out American grocery stores, I find that their seafood prices are more expensive than my local sprouts especially when Sprouts has a sale. People drive crazy here so be careful when looking for a parking spot. Prices are great for Asian produce and groceries. I cook a lot of Filipino food so I'd rather drive here for my ingredients instead of say Lucky's which will cost me 3x the price for bok choy or eggplant. Most of the time, the items are out-of-stock or difficult to find. Every time I ask help to find an item in-store, most employees would rudely tell me they don't know or lie to me and tell me to look somewhere else. For so long, I've always thought 99 Ranch didn't carry kelp and wakame seaweed because the employees would always tell me they don't sell them. However, out of curiosity, when I emailed the 99 Ranch website customer service, they told me exactly where to find it at my store and even sent photos. From there, I finally found them because someone helped me! I really like the variety 99 Ranch offers, but it feels so useless when I can't even find the items. Most employees are just so mean and rude when I ask for help that I just don't ask or even come back at all. I now go to Seafood City, the market across the street since at least their employees try to help me and they also have a large variety of Asian goods. Always busy and crowded. Its impossible to find parking sometimes. I come here to buy Japanese curry ingredients and sometimes order a Roasted duck which is usually 20~ dollars + tax. I love the different varieties of Asian foods you can grab here in terms of a grocery shopping list but most of the time it's impossible to even walk through any of the aisles. My goal when coming here is to make sure I know what I'm getting so I can just grab it and GTFO. There are people serving free samples near the frozen meat sections which makes it even more complicated to try and view what options you have. This is the third time we got those bad cup cakes from 99 Ranch Market. The expiration date is 7/25/23. Today is 7/23/23 and you can see the stale cakes. I don't know how they control the quality of cakes and foods here but it's very dangerous. My dad who couldn't see the cake with black stale dots around then he ate it. The hot food counter has bad service. Most of the people behind the counter took their time, was talking to each other, & were taking customers all out of order. The lady who finally helped me yesterday kept skipping over me until I told her that I was next, then acted really rude towards me as if I did something wrong. On top of, she couldn't understand my simple order. Usually, things over there aren't THAT bad. But yesterday, service was horrible & incredibly disorganized. So, I've been shopping here since before the Concord store opened... I used to drive to the Richmond location, but it would be a whole day and I would get a boba tea and stuff from their bakery (the bakery in Richmond is so amazing!!! I miss the blueberry cheese buns and the beef curry horns. Yum!!!) Once they opened one so close, I had super high expectations for them, but lately, I am not sure what's going on... Since Covid started I have shopped here about once a month to get my Asian ingredient fix for various dishes I make at home. I often bought the sushi grade fish in the meat department to make sushi at home. In April I purchased salmon and tuna. I took it home and was able to make spicy tuna no problem, the fish was good quality and I love spicy tuna... But the salmon! Once I opened it, it filled my kitchen with a very bad fish smell. I was taken aback and I tried to figure out if the fish was truly bad, because it looked fine... Turns out the expiration date was 3 days before. So, I just threw it away, I wasn't going to take it back, it was only 1 experience in all my years of shopping there, it's a $9 investment. Fast forward to my next shopping trip, I check the expirations before buying in May, I cannot buy anything, all the sell by dates are anywhere from 3-5 days expired. Fast forward to yesterday! I walked up to the pre-packed fish and saw pre-cooked whole lobster and crabs, I was so excited! I was like, awesome we can have a yummy unexpected dinner... Then I look at the price "OHMYGAWD! A whole crab is only $5!?!?" Then I go, wait, check the expiration... both the lobster and the crab all expired on the 21st of this month and it was the 25th. One of the lobsters shell was even broken in the large area and the meat inside was black. I then decided this purchase was not coming home with me, but maybe I could get some seaweed salad instead... The one side had some right above the crab, all expired... the right side had more seaweed salad and it was not to expire until 9/2, thank goodness. I don't know what's going on, but people who shop here could get seriously ill from the negligence on this stores seafood sell by dates... I have already bought bad salmon, so now I have to be even more careful not to purchase bad fish from their cold case. I really hope they fix this, I am not sure who I could contact to let them know this continues to go on... If anyone has that info, please PM me. I did make sushi plates last night with the items we could get that were not expired and it turned out delicious. I love the variety of sauces and items I can get from here... I turned the corner and was walking down the cold case aisle next to the vegetable section and there was a male employee who literally pulled off his blue filter mask, sneezed his germs all over in front of himself and the cold case products, slipped his mask on, and looked at me like a deer in the headlights because of the utter, horrid, pissed off disgusted look on my face. No embarrassed look, no apology, etc. My wife was on the other side of the aisle and she had the same look on her face. I walked by that guy to give him a very disapproving look and my wife said (paraphrasing) "Did you just see that? Who the F does that!?!" After we calmed down a bit, we went to the liquor aisle and wanted to speak with a manager. The lady behind the counter said she was the assistant manager and we explained the situation. She was shocked and so we pointed out the employee and no sooner did we walk off did I see her talking with the guy. I hope he got his a## handed to him. +1 star for the prompt action of the ass't manager +1 star because its the only Asian grocery store game in town. God I miss Los Angeles. Been coming to 99 Ranch Markets for years. Been to several of them all over the Bay Area. Overall they're a great place to find Asian ingredients including Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and more. They also have a bakery, Asian cuisine like BBQ pork and duck, along with dim sum favorites. Their fresh seafood and meats are reasonably priced as well as hard to find produce like Taro, Pea Leaves, Banana flowers, Asian Pears, Mangoes, and Soursop. It's also good to get fresh chow fun noodles, Taiwanese style fresh noodles or even ramen. They carry an assortment of teas, sake, soysauce, and frozen foods like ice cream and mochi. I usually go here for their fresh fish. You can even get your fish fried, just ask. Prices here are in some cases better than the regular grocery stores. I just experienced the worst encounter with a security person while shopping for my dinner. I felt violated and discriminated. The way this black security person was looking at me while I was looking for a product like I was stealing and that is not OK! I did feel like someone was looking at me. As an employee at Safeway.
