I've heard a lot of good things about this restaurant (they also own Ritters and Wild Pear if I'm not mistaken). Excellent service, food, and cleanliness! This was my first time coming here, it's so cozy, and home feeling.. I'll definitely be coming back again. We ordered a side of pancakes for a toddler who we brought with us. The chef recreated it and made it kid friendly with her, it was so sweet! He even stopped by to see if she loved it, and gave her a complimentary chocolate cookie. In addition to the side of pancakes, we ordered chicken and waffles, and avocado, tomato, and bacon eggs Benedict. All were delicious, presentable, and amazing portions. read more

I use Yelp! For every restaurant before I eat there. I am a food connoisseur and would not lead anybody on with a false rating. This is by far my girlfriend and I favorite place to go if you are on the commercial avenue area. 1. Phenomenal customer service 2. Food has always been amazing 3. Since this restaurant is close it has become kind of a go to breakfast with friends place for me. The food has generally been good, the service has always been a little off for me but this morning's visit was that experience that of it would have been my first visit, it would have been my last. We walked in and were greeted by a big screen displaying FOX news (politics aside, it's a diner not a bar) we were shown to our table and I could feel the grease on the back of my chair as I pulled it away from the table. I had the biscuits and gravy and it was good. The side of bacon (which I had put on my husband's plate, was beyond crispy. It was not their A-game today. Really good place! Salem may not be known as a bar and restaurant mecca, i have found that with my business trips you can get a great breakfast here. Having said that i was intrigued by their proclamation of the best country fried steak in salem. So is it?? Well until i go retry my fave spot I am going to say yes, although it could be a tie. They have a GREAT country fried steak. The potatoes were excellent as well. Service was good, but it was pretty empty when I went. The only ding was the bread. Today's Acme Cafe is not like it's glory days of the past. The Acme has passed on to different owners. I think some items have been dropped from the menu. Our meal was OK ... nothing bad... nothing memorable. We have fond memories of Acme and stop by periodically. I've been to Acme about a dozen times in the past few years and have always thought the food was outstanding. We came on a Friday around 8:30 and got seated right away. My sister and I always order one sweet dish and one savory dish to share; this time, we went with the blueberry sourdough pancakes and the fried shrimp benedict. While the blueberry pancakes are very good, the shrimp benedict is next level! This place is kid-friendly and the kitchen staff are always good to our little ones. We'll be back. read more

Stopped by today for lunch. I had fish and chips and wife, shrimp and chips. Without a doubt, the best we have ever had in the Salem area. Most places serve cod or halibut or salmon and the excellent rockfish is overlooked. It's my favorite for both taste and texture. The coating is fresh and crunchy without overcooking the fish. My wife found this place. It's aight. We waited for a while to be seated because we walked in behind two large families. I got the chicken fried chicken covered in white gravy, with eggs and potatoes (I would have preferred hash browns but this was our first time and I didn't know how to order). It was good and I ate it all less some potatoes. It was really good but I would have preferred a little more gravy. I ordered coffee which came, and was refilled, slowly. The place was crowded and it was really loud, but we managed. Our server was nice and let my wife and take our time with the massive menu. But the server let us have too much time with the menu because I changed my mind 5 times before I got what I got. We went for breakfast and I was wanting breakfast and lunch by the time our server came to take our order. I think next time we will go for lunch. But it will be on a weekday. read more

This was such a great diner to find! Definitely will be going back. They offer such a variety of food and spirits that it'll take quite a few visits to sample them all. Small restaurant with an open kitchen concept so if you want you can watch your food being prepared! Very disappointed after all the hype I have heard. I had biscuits and gravy, eggs and bacon. My Mom had an omelet with potatoes, peppers and onions. We were seated quickly. My Mom walks with a cane and they took us past several empty booths, finally I had to ask can we sit here. They have an hvac issue inside, for about 10 minutes there was a loud whine and we almost left. Menu wasn't anything special, I was surprised that you couldn't get pancakes or french toast after 11 am, seems strange when they close at 2. We got there at 11:30am. Way to much biscuit, looked like 4 full biscuits, not enough gravy. Bacon was horrible, way over done. It looked like shoe leather and broke into pieces. No sight of strawberries in the strawberry lemonade. Mom's omelet and potatoes had huge chunks of vegetables. Seems like a lazy way to cook. All the vegetables were bigger than bite sized and had to be cut. The sourdough toast was good. Overall ok, many other places in Salem I would rather go! read more

Finally made it to Acme Cafe with friends and the food was incredible. Great portions and great service. Even had some interaction with the cooks that was wholesome. Once we started eating nobody on the table was talking until we were pretty much finished. Highly recommend and will definitely return many times! read more

I went here on Tuesday for breakfast with a meet up group. I shared with the waitress I was vegan. They made me a special plate of food. Was perfect. I got the fish tacos. They had great flavor! I felt like all the flavors worked well together and everything had its own taste. Sometimes, I find fish tacos bland but these were not! I wish the fish size would have been a bit bigger but I did have fish with every bite... so maybe I am being picky. Salad came out with rotten, moldy, and slimy cucumber. Burger came out missing every topping except lettuce, and it took over 45 minutes to get our food. Our waitress was apologetic but we ended up paying full price for a meal that was rotten and made incorrectly. We were hesitant to even finish our food, worried it would make us sick. Even though I ordered it to-go, I live down the street and this order was very bland. The burger patty for my Loco Moco was an overdone hockey puck and the sauce was tasteless. Everything was extremely under seasoned, super dry rice; the breakfast potatoes were soft on the outside but not cooked on the inside... thankfully the southern veggie omelette was edible which is why it is not shown in the picture and also why I gave this place two stars. I was really hoping Acme Cafe would be a step above the rest being local, using fresh ingredients. I thought I would give them a try after having a bad experience there pre-pandemic and apparently I made a mistake. What makes me most mad is that I tipped on my to-go for the quality and "service". The lady who took my order over the phone was super awkward and couldn't wait to get off the call. Then when I encountered her at the register, she was very stand-offish. Both dishes were barely edible so what do I do? Take it back to them and prove it? Ain't nobody got time for that. AND we got two pints of ice cream on top of our meal, so I basically spent $55 on two pints of ice cream that may or may not be good, I don't know. This review is for to go orders, I have not eaten at the actual restaurant. The first time we ordered it was for delivery. Customer service was great when we called. Food was delivered pretty quickly. Fried chicken was good, Reuben was good but didn't travel well (got a bit soggy). My husband loves his Reuben's so I was determined to get one to him that would be fresh. I called in an order and added on some pastrami cheese fries. This time I was going to pick up so I could be there before the food was ready and jam home all speedy like to keep the Reuben fresh. Welp, traffic had other plans for me and this was similar to the first food... except even longer to get it home. Third time was defnitely the charm. Ordered and picked up. Got the same things... fried chicken, Reuben, and the pastrami fries. The chicken and the Reuben were great. The pastrami cheese fries do not travel well... even with all of my speedy efforts the cheese was a cooled block of what might have been hanging out on top of some fries. That said, I am sure they are amazing when fresh. Why do I feel this way? Because the next night we chopped up that block of what might have been, with all of the delicious pastrami that we had also pulled off the fries, and made it into some bomb nachos. The pastrami was excellent, the cheese reheated well and we felt we got what we paid for after all. I'm a fan of this little spot. read more

Update: This place has gone way downhill. Came here for standard chicken and waffles. The chicken breast I ordered was served to me unsafely undercooked. At a neighboring table, someone was served an undercooked pancake. On our way out we heard a waitress tell someone that their card had been accidentally swiped on another table's order. I won't be back, and sorry to see this place go. After a year and a half of living in Salem, I'd resigned myself to only having 2 options when the motivation struck to eat out for breakfast- Sassy Onion or Word of Mouth. Today my stomach was growling for chicken and waffles. A quick Yelp search brought me to Acme, a trendy breakfast cafe tucked away from Commercial beside Office Max that I have undoubtedly driven by thousands of times. The host offered a 15-minute wait for my own private table, or immediate seating if I was willing to sit at their communal seating bench, the Buddy Bar. Never one to turn down seating with a fun name, I opted for the latter. The Buddy Bar offered great views of Sunday football. My pursuit of chicken and waffles stood unwavering as I scanned across a menu with plenty of appealing breakfast options. The waffle ended up being the real star of the plate, as my chicken was a little too salty for me to want to order it again. Very disappointed by the service today. My husband and I came in at 12 and were told the wait wouldn't be too long. We asked if we could sit at the bar, but were told they were understaffed and couldn't seat anyone there. No problem, we weren't in a rush, so we waited. After 40 minutes go by my husband goes up to check on what's going on because there is a guy sitting at the bar that came in after us already eating. When he asked why he was able to sit there, they said it's because he's a regular. Absolutely rude when we're also paying customers and have been waiting for 40 minutes. What a great place! We have been there a few times over the past couple of years and we have had a great meal each time! Our latest experience began when we walked through the front door. We were greeted by at least two staff members and seated immediately. The restaurant is clean and well lit. Neat things to look at on the walls. The menu is, in my opinion, the perfect size. Many dishes to choose from but not so many that it becomes confusing. My wife chose a waffle with bacon and eggs. It all looked so good and she really enjoyed it. I, on the other hand, chose the special of the day; Huevos Rancheros with chorizo. Oh my goodness!! It was EXCELLENT! Home-made by the chef. Let me tell you, he knows what the heck he is doing!! I savored every bite and enjoyed it very much! I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant! It looks relatively small from the outside but it is surprisingly large inside. Don't pass this one by!
