This used to be our favorite sushi restaurant. It is now under new ownership and the quality and presentation of the food has gone down. All new sushi chefs who were standing around watching tv; I have never been in a sushi house where the chefs were not always busy. Quality is down. It was ok. I think overrated. Chicken curry had literally 4 teeny pcs of chicken in it. Kinda pricey for what you get. Sushi wasn't bad.

UPDATE 11/8/10 Okay, so I went back to give the ramen another chance because it was freezing outside and I was desperate. Needless to say, they've earned one star back because damn, was it good again. I'm hoping the next time I go it's just as delicious to rid the fear of inconsistency. The noodles were snappy again and not soggy and the broth was oh-so-flavorful. But, I must say the broth is much saltier than Shoki's. Well, I saw this place's advertisement on the newspaper saying "The best ramen place in Sac". Well... false advertisement right there. I've had many better ramen before. On top of that, I had hair in my soup. (I think it was a female one). I will never go back to that place again as I can get a better (instant) ramen from otto's next door. Sushi was just alright. Nothing special at all. I've heard that they are opening the ramen place called "Ryujin" in dtwn Sac, but I don't think I will go or want to go. I can already see it'd be an another disappointment. Gotta know what you guys are serving before you say you guys' food are the best. read more

One of my favorite Japanese spots. All the rolls and sashimi are great and priced fairly. Their ramen is top notch and I've tried almost all of them. The Gekikara is my favorite. Their portion sizes are good across the whole menu. I live in the area so I eat here a lot and it's consistantly good. The service is always very prompt and friendly. Highly recommend read more

This place is really good. Every time I've been to this place, I've been quite impressed. The sushi is good, the service is excellent, and holy crap, their ramen bowls are AWESOME. My favorite is the hiyashi chuka, and I've gone out of my way just to get some of it. Don't be fooled by the modest exterior - this place is the real deal. Nestled in a fairly average looking strip mall in between two other notable Sacramento joints, Mahoroba Japanese Bakery and Otos Marketplace, Akebono is small unassuming sushi and ramen house with some pretty good eats. We had some rolls, blue fin nigiri, ramen and some chicken dishes...for the kids. The ramen was ok. the chicken dishes were a tad funky and the rolls and nigiri was well above average. The service was pleasant. During the hour we spent there the place fluctuated between completely packed to nobody waiting. If we lived closer, Akebono would surely be in our weekly sushi rotation. read more

Amazing! Fantastic hand roll! Gyoza was best I have ever had, cooked to perfection, thin wrapper, tender and juicy inside! They serve the Gyoza sauce and hot sauce on side! The rolls were stuffed, perfect ratio of rice and fish, beautiful tasting sauce as well. Edamame perfect cold and plump! Service impeccable! This has become our sushi place!!!! read more

A co-worker recommended Akebono, so I made the trip over. (Parking is VERY challenging... and this restaurant was Packed!) I was able to be seated right away as I sat at the counter. I ordered the Dream Come True roll as my co-worker recommended. It was HUGE!! I also ordered the Mixed Tempura, which was ok. Soup does not come with the rolls as it does elsewhere, which is disappointing, but the DCT Roll was very good. I could only finish 2 pieces of the 8 provided... it's probably 4-5" in diameter (no joke), but it is packed with seafood; very small amount of teriyaki drizzled over and on the plate. I realize some folks don't care for sauce, but it's one of my favorite parts of the specialty rolls. This roll definitely needed sauce. I asked for more sauce approx. 4 times... each time I was given 1 small plastic container with about a tablespoon of sauce. I finally asked for a container to go and I packed it up; went to WalMart to pick up some Yum-Yum sauce; and enjoyed this delicious roll later that night (with as much sauce as I needed). The servers were not very attentive. It may have been because they were very busy. I would give this restaurant another chance, as everyone is talking about the ramen and other great sushi roll menu choices. (I might have to bring my own sauce though, to fully enjoy the Sushi experience.) read more

This is my favorite place in Sacramento. I used to live in Japan, and I miss the food- not the restaurant food, the home cooking. This is the only place I've found that sells legitimate Japanese home cooking (and of course they've got all the other Japanese restaurant staples too- amazing sushi, great entrees, and RAMEN FOR DAYS). Without fail, I get the yasai (vegetable) ramen. They grill cabbage, carrots, corn, onions, broccoli, and shiitake mushrooms, then marinate them on the broth jut enough to make them flavorful, but not soft or squishy. It's delicious. And a $9 bowl of ramen turns into at least two huge meals for me- and I can eat. Their portions easily serve two, maybe three. I always stop by Akebono (sometimes twice or three times a week...) whenever I make it back to Sac. read more

My Son took me here for my Birthday! I really like this place, everything down to the salad was so fresh! Lemon water, huge portions. I chose sushi and my son had pork katsu. He loved it! A quiet zen atmosphere. Better than average! read more

Love this restaraunt! I eat here at least once a month, it's consistantly good. Their sushi rolls are the absolute best in town. We used to love this place and came here once a week since it was difficult to find good sushi in Sac. However the last few times have been lackluster - bad service and the food was mediocre. Last night was the worst - the rice was cheap rice and old, Anyone who knows Japanese food knows that rice is the last thing you skimp on. Very very disappointed. read more

If only there were negative stars...forget the fact they didn't include Wasabi or Ginger for my to go order. I'm simply commenting on the rolls I ordered. They were all different and yet tasted almost the same, why...too much rice, unimaginative ingredients/lack of actually...I've never had boring tasteless sushi before. Akebono is my favorite Japanese restaurant, they always are really accommodating, and their food is always good.

I can't write an extensive review of Akebono quite yet (being that I have only tried it once). We waited for a while for a table, but the wait was well worth it. I ordered the sashimi combo.. and the fiance ordered the Ramen challenge (hot) and a roll. My sashimi was good.. cut just a tad too thick for my liking, but the fish tasted fresh and of high quality. The ramen was soooo good! I would definitely come back for that. It would be an amazing hangover or sick day soup. :) Can't wait to come back and try some more sushi. read more

I LOVE this place. This is my favorite japanese restaurant in Sacramento and I'll drive from the Arden area to Freeport to get it. Their sushi and sashimi is fresh, their soba is perfectly cooked, tempura batter is tasty, just crispy enough and consistent, and most of all, they have croquette curry. Stopped here on a brief trip to Sacramento. With an autistic son, its tough finding a place that's welcoming, with food he'll eat, and Akebono was a wonder. Great service darn good food. I love the Hawaiian Japanese flair. Sushi could have been a bit fresher, but I'm really being picky, rest of the food was stellar. This is my FAVORITE Japanese spot in Sacramento!!!! I live nearby and eat here at least once a week. It is consistently great. My 5 year old daughter is even a fan. The rolls are really good, but my favorite is the ramen. It comes in a HUGE bowl, I seriously doubt you will be able to finish it in one seating. I recommend eating it there and taking your leftovers home because if you order it to go, you get about half of the portion. The ramen is also a great hangover cure :) read more

one of the most average ramen joint i've tried. soup was average(none of that distinct pungent flavor), noodles alright. the noodle was slightly off in complementing the soup. i ordered the spicy cha siu ramen. the spicy is a regular spicy. i wonder why the ramen and meat ratio never satisfies me at all these shops. yes shoki would be the top ramen place in sac. i also ordered agadashi tofu, but that batter was chewy, and drowned with sauce. chewy and soggy, yuck. aok for the ramen only read more

A co-worker introduced me to this place about 3 years ago now. I love Sashimi and often getting good Sashimi is a crap shoot. Their sushi and sashimi has got to be the freshest I've had anywhere. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Coming here with a large group is very affordable as they offer all kinds of Sushi Boats at very reasonable prices. Over all, this has got to be one of the BEST sushi places in Sacramento. NOTE: Get here early or well after the Lunch rush as the wait can be long at times, especially on the weekends. read more
