We are staying in Sequim on a trip to tour the Olympic National Park. Inn where we are staying recommended several places-- we chose Alder Wood Bistro Take out was our only option due to a little dog in attendance. The Canneloni was delicious. The meatloaf was moist, tasteful and ample portioned with potatoes & greens. Lemon pie is unusual but delicious. Even with a reservation, our group had a long wait to be seated. This place was packed, so definitely make a reservation. Being so crowded, service was understandably slow. In these Covid times, this is to be expected so I am basing my review solely on the food, which was excellent. We were seated out back under a tent, which was nice. Due to the high reviews we decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary & have dinner here. We weren't impressed. We made a dinner reservation & still had to wait for 20 mins to be seated, which I found insulting since we made a reservation that was confirmed@ 7pm & had to wait on our special occasion. The calamari appetizer was bland, my salmon pasta carbonara dish was extremely salty & fishy tasting the portion was very small for the price. My husband had the steak frite which was yummy but once again very small. Normally we like to sample each others dishes but with the portions being so little we didn't. All in all this place was a let down, nothing at all excited us enough to recommend or revisit this establishment. I guess they have garden seating but wasn't offered it. Indoor atmosphere is bland. I had one of the best meals in the past year here. Tucked away in an old residential home, you definitely have to make reservations for this small restaurant. The seems to be a local favorite, as it was enthusiastically recommended by a local winery and there were a few parties waiting to be seated when we arrived. They are known for their expertly-prepared local, organic and fresh ingredients. We started off with big meaty mussels with sauce that we practically lopped up with our spoons (wait I think we did lop it up with our spoons). I had one of their specials, lamb shank. The meat simply fell off of the bone was just simply perfect. The greens it came with were fresh and the grains complemented everything nicely. One of my friends ordered another of their specials, the alder planked salmon (see photo). I think the picture pretty much says it all; the salmon was as fresh as can be and yes it was as good as it looks! For dessert, I ordered the Chocolate Hazelnut Meringue Torte: "Layers of organic hazelnut meringue, bittersweet chocolate ganache, and organic hazelnut butter cream served with organic whipped cream." Alder Wood Bistro is the finest food we have had in the entire state of Washington. The facility is small, so make sure you get reservations. The service was awesome, and the salmon was by far, the best salmon I have ever had. The creme brûlée was perfect, and the other deserts were equally as yummy. On top of all this, they have a wonderful wine list filled with boutique wineries! A rare treat to open a wine list and not be overwhelmed with Stags Leap and the like. Not to say we don't enjoy Stags Leap and some of the other noted high-end wineries, but the small boutique wineries are a definite treat! AWESOME little place located in a residential neighbourhood a couple of streets off the main drag. Doesn't look like much from outside, but it's full of wonderful surprises. My favourite place to sit is outside in the back patio -- even on cooler, grey days. Watch the birds flit about, what stage of growing the various fruit, veg, & herbs are in. Usually nice, groovy world music playing. Local, organic, etc. clearly marked on all items. Although there's not necessarily a lot that's ready-to-go as vegan, they always work with me. My favourite thing to order is the portobello panini (withouth cheese). Amazing sweet potato / yam fries. Wood-fired veggies are really nice. Slow-food kind of place... not "fast food". Be prepared to kick back and enjoy yourself. Forget your hurried life for a time. :) read more

My spousal unit and I stayed 3 nights at a great little cottage on the beach, while I was there for my 30th (choke!) reunion. I had checked out local dining on-line prior to the drive up there, and thought this sounded pretty good, based on the locavore and organic attitude. PRETTY GOOD?! Well, let's just call it fantastic! First, we called to see if we could get in on 15 minutes notice, and they said they could figure it out, so come in. Turns out that only the inside was busy; plenty of tables outside in the garden. I highly recommend eating outside if the weather is good (and it was perfect that day). Food: We are small-bites-many-times-a-day-eaters, so decided to share a few things. Started with a couple of raw oysters (yes, I know this was not a month with an "R"), and they were great. We asked for the name of them something like 6 times, and our very attentive and funny server said she would write it down, as they were a specialized oyster from a local grower. Small, deep shelled, briny - summer at the beach in a bite. Next, we had the beet salad (local organic beets, local goat cheese). Wonderful sweet and earthy beets perfectly marinated, greens perfectly dressed (and I am a salad snob!). Loved it so much, that in fact I bought some of the golden beets at the Nash Organic Farm Store (also worth a trip) the next day and repeated it at home a couple of days later. Then, the pizza. We make a pretty mean pizza at home, but have not mastered a crust that we both like. This one did it: crisp, yet chewy, not too thick, not too thin. We had the "Smokey(?)", a little too meaty for me (that's just me), and spousal unit thought it was just right. By then, we were done, stuffed, roll me home, kaput! Until...she mentioned the lavender creme brulee. Well how can you turn that down? After arguing over who got the first "crack", we hunkered down and ate every last delicious bit. We are not dessert people, but this was delicious (Am I being redundant, yes. Was it delicious, yes!). Be warned: the creme itself is little softer than most, because of the fresh eggs, but still absolutely great. The brulee was super crisp and perfectly browned. The lavender is very subtle and seemed to add a little clean brightness to it. Wine: we described what we wanted in a taste profile, and she brought a perfect wine. I think it was the Steele Sauvignon Blanc. Ambiance: Well, a garden on a perfect summer day? Under one of the cherry trees (yes, we "stole" a few), next to loganberries about to ripen. Herbs, Artichokes, etc. gone to seed (because this is a seed saver year for them). Service: Devon was probably one of the best servers I have ever had, and I have had MANY with work travel: attentive without being obtrusive, funny (hey, she put up with us!). Also, you could tell she had several regulars who adored her. But here is the BEST part: she wrote down a list of things we might want to do. We paid up, left, and were almost 2 blocks away when she came running down the street after us! Out of breath, she said, "I forgot to give you the name of the oysters!" and wrote it down for us. They are "hasteelum kul", by the way. Go there. Just don't be sitting in my Loganberry table when we visit next. read more

From handmade ice cream starring local blue cheese (!), to local beers/ciders/wines, to salads made from greens picked just a few miles away and brought to your table hours later, this place is worth the price for the discerning eco-foodie. Prices are understandably high, but portions are generous. Service is not particularly quick, but the food was worth waiting for. We stopped by here after flying into Seattle on our way to Port Angeles. My only negative point was that this place wasn't that busy and it took them 5-10 minutes to seat us. Sit outside if you can, especially if the weather is nice! Their outdoor seating is out in a garden out back. We spotted some artichokes, blueberries, celery, and all kinds of other herbs growing, just watch out for bees! The food itself was good, they make it a point to mark on their menu whether something is locally harvested or regionally harvested. I had the oyster "poor boy". Basically pan-fried oysters in a sandwich with a salad on the side. I couldn't name the sauce they served with it, a little sweet and slightly sour (vinegary). I even ate the salad. They also have a good number of local/regionally bottled and brewed beers and ciders. Overall, it was a good start to a great trip. I'd recommend stopping by, the restaurant is in a very convenient location if you're heading into the Olympic (national park) peninsula area. read more

I absolutely love this place. Everything from the edible garden in the outdoor seating area to the truffle fries... I always leave completely satisfied and feeling good. The only reason I can say that this isn't my absolute favorite restaurant ever, is that it's just a little more pricey than I like. That said, I eat here as often as I can afford, it is worth it. I believe almost all their ingredients are somewhat local - much of the produce comes from Nash's organic farm. The wood fire pizza's and the sandwiches are mouth watering. The interesting seasonal soups and menu specials are always delicious and creative. I have chosen to eat here on both my wedding night and my first anniversary because it is such a special place. My out of town guests always beg to go here - the only downside is they are closed in January! A must for anyone wanting real Olympic Peninsula flavor in their bellies. read more

This place is nothing short of pure awesomeness. Don't judge it by the building or location when you drive up. They are located off the main traffic area and the building looks like a pre-fab or repurposed double-wide. Don't worry - you have come to the right place for outstanding food and service. The chef does a great job of building menu items around fresh, locally sourced ingredients. They have nightly specials as well as a seasonal menu with a nice selection of starters, salads and entrees featuring wood-fired pizzas, pasta, beef, pork and fish. We shared the nightly feature - a delicious porchetta cooked in the wood-fire oven. It was tender, moist and flavorful served with an apple cider reduction which was delicious. It was accompanied with creamy mashed potatoes and a generous side of rabe cooked just right. Our starter was the beet salad, very good with homemade pickled beets served with mixed greens in a light vinagrette and feta cheese - a delightful, fresh taste. We also shared the Smokey pizza - the crust was chewy & crispy, the sauce not overpowering and it was topped with local salami and sausage. We took half the pie home to fight over later, so we could save room for dessert. For drinks I had a glass of Cabernet off the nice wine menu, which was full-bodies and perfect for the earthy pork dish. My hubby went with the rotating tap - a smooth, smoky Porter brewed locally. He was happy enough with it to order a second glass! Our dessert choice was a fantastic apple pie that caught our eye when we came in the door. It was warmed in the fire oven and served with vanilla bean ice cream. We shared a small pot of decaf French press coffee which went great with the pie. Our dining experience was perfect in every way - we walked in without a reservation and were seated in about 10 min - next time we will make a reservation! After spending a week in the Port Angeles/Sequim area, we had been let down quite a few times by the local restaurants, but Alder Wood Bistro was our salvation on our last day (Although, I will admit that I Yelped this place in a desperate attempt to find good food). First, it is a cozy little restaurant that serves quality seasonal, local, regional and organic food. All the items on the menu have labels indicating how far the food has traveled before arriving on your plate which is awesome! Second, the waitresses were very friendly and welcoming and we were seated right away. The restaurant was homey and very clean. Also, the bar is made of a large piece of a red wood tree and was really cool. They have a pretty extensive wine, beer and cider list, too. Now to the best part: THE FOOD: 1. My sister and I both got 1/4 lb burgers made from grass-fed beef in the regional area. Both of us are purists and did not get any of the toppings, but the beef was very flavorful and well-seasoned. Also, it was served on a grilled piece of ciabatta bread with your choice of a side. I got the mixed seasonal greens which was very simple, but refreshing with a light amount of vinaigrette. 2. My mom was hesitant to stop here because she was craving pizza, but alas-there was wood-fired pizza on the menu! She ordered the Rosa, which was essentially a Margherita pizza with fresh basil. 3. My aunt ordered the Banh Mi with the catch of the day and cole slaw and ate every bit of it. She says that it is the best she's had! 4. Dessert: AMAZING - the blackberry sorbet was awesome according to my mom and aunt. My sister ordered the creme brulee and said that it was also very good. I ordered the upside down cheesecake and it was FABULOUS (I am a total dessert connoisseur). The cheesecake was served in a cup and topped with a fabulous apple cider caramel with little sea salt crystals in it and a wonderful lavender shortbread cookie to top it off. It was absolutely wonderful with the slight salt and sweetness combination. Overall impression: This place is definitely worth stopping at and enjoying a meal...or two!!!! read more

We shared a crab appetizer, and I had a vegetarian entree featuring lots of local produce-- carefully prepared, great, fresh ingredients. There was a small rock in my friend's dinner salad which raised some eyebrows. There's an interesting wood bar. The desserts are good. Speed: 5* for food service Service: initial issues, but they were down a waitress/waiter because of family issues so they can't be marked down for this. Otherwise the staff was great. The banh mi with smelt (mp and market catch) was great, fresh, well dressed with a great slaw. The alder savory tart was fantastic and the simple salad was good. The Tarte/quiche had a wonderful texture and great crust! The Special lentil soup was good and warm and a mix of white bean and chorizo The portabella panini was also good. Menu- inventive and healthy and fascinating Food - fresh and local and creative Service - simply on a par above everywhere else I had the pork with salsa verde, Alderwood greens, plums and mashed potatoes. While I must say that the Sequim central business district had little to recommend it, this restaurant was the exception and was pretty good. I was actually not hungry so I just got a salad, but it was wonderful ... and different ... with raspberries, tangerines, cashews, watermelon radishes, blue cheese and a delightful vinaigrette atop tasty greens. Jess had the beet salad that she liked but I didn't try it since it had ... beets. She also had the mussels appetizer that she really enjoyed. We had the polenta cake for dessert and it was really good. Not too sweet and topped with a lovely rhubarb compote. If you find yourself in the northern tier of the Olympic Peninsula, definitely come check it out. read more
