A local recommended Alder Wood Bistro to us when we were in town for a vacation. We went and decided to sit on the patio because it was a nice day. We had to wait awhile to get menus. We weren't sure why the hostess who sat us didn't give us any, so we went inside to get some. They told us they'd be right out with them. We got the menus and were delighted to see that they had many local and regional products in their meals. They clearly marked which ones had ingredients from where. Most of the ingredients are local and organic. We thought the prices were decent for this type of food, since you obviously pay more for better and local ingredients. We started with the sweet potato fries. They were to die for! Deliciously salted and with a dipping sauce that was yummy. They disappeared quickly. If you like sweet potato fries, pay extra to get them as a starter or add them to your meal. You won't be sorry! I ordered the simple salad and the lentil soup, which was the soup of the day. I'm a vegetarian and was surprised there weren't more vegetarian options. 2 salads, one sandwich (portabella sandwich, and I'm not a fan of mushrooms), and maybe a pizza. Don't remember but I'd guess so. The lentil soup was really delicious. It was small, but hearty. And order the grilled bread with your soup! It was fantastic. The salad was so-so. Pretty simple, like they said. The dressing wasn't my favorite. But I ate it anyways. My group really liked their meals too. When an extra person came, they got his meal out fast so he wasn't to far behind us. (Based on a visit in August 2009.) Alder Wood took us completely by surprise. The exterior is very unassuming and the decor inside haphazard and boring. But the food was terrific - well prepared, using great ingredients that complemented each other. The highlights of our meal included a smokey pizza with salumi salami and house made chorizo, a duo of goat cheeses, and an impeccable planked black cod. The pan-fried oysters were less exciting than we'd hoped, but there was a very nice beet salad. And we all went to town on the french fries we ordered for the kids. If/when I'm anywhere near Sequim again, I'd make sure to eat here again. read more

Fantastic food prepared with the freshest ingredients that are sourced locally and regionally. Respectable wine list. Even the house wine was above average. Very nice and attentive staff. Oh so delicious! Fresh, Local and Seasonal items all made with love and inspiration. I was very excited to find Alder Wood Bistro while visiting Port Angeles on a vacation with my husband. We didn't realize exactly how small of a place this is though. Capacity is 44 people... TINY - only downside - MAKE RESERVATIONS - we were lucky enough to have 2 spaces open at the mini sit down bar that we were excited to take. Great wine selection and the beer selection was good. We had the wood fired flat bread, all I can say is "OH MY YUMMY" We each had an entree, I had slow cooked lamb and my husband had the steak frite. Both cooked wonderful and seasoned amazingly. For dessert we couldn't agree upon one thing so we had 2. Crème Brûlée - organic vanilla bean, honey, lavender crème with burnt sugar top and the Warm Cranberry Bread Pudding! Delightful! Simply amazing. I couldn't believe this gem existed right in the middle of Sequim. We were just traveling through and asked for a recommendation. I'm sure glad we had the good sense to listen! It's a small restaurant but we didn't have to wait long. After waiting there I would have gladly waited though! I had the short ribs and my boyfriend had the meatloaf. We started with oysters - they melted. The jus on the short ribs is quite possibly the single most incredible thing I have ever tasted. The gravy on the meatloaf was phenomenal. Both dishes were served with delicious and creamy mashed potatos and perfectly blanched kale. Both sides balanced the richness of the entree well. Did I mention that the meatloaf was wrapped with smoked bacon? Yes. It was and it was perfect. I don't know how any one could possibly say this is anything less than a 5 star restaurant. It's reasonably priced - especially considering that most every item on the menu, down to the milk and flower, is local or organic and/or sustainable - or all of the above. I live in Seattle and I say to all of my fellow Seattleites - if you want an incredible dinner - hop on the ferry and drive to Sequim. As soon as possible. I intend to be back SOON. Before last night and my meal at Alder Wood Bistro, I said the best meal I've ever had was at a tiny restaurant off of Kennedy St. in Paris. Oh. My. God. This place is amazing. I have only been here once, but I was so impressed that the next time I was headed out to the Olympic peninsula, I seriously considered modifying my itinerary to allow for another meal there (they are closed Sunday and Monday, unfortunately). Don't be fooled by the less-than-stellar look of the building from the outside. Walking in, it is clear that this is an excellent establishment. We were lucky to be there on a beautiful day (though, aren't most days beautiful in Sequim?), and sat on their back patio, which was just blissful. The sun coming through the trees was such a beautiful environment for the meal. And the food!! I was first drawn here by their focus on local and organic food, combined with the good reviews that I had seen on Yelp. Local/organic/sustainable restaurants are pretty much my favorite kinds of restaurants, and this one was no disappointment. The menu differentiates if ingredients are a) from Sequim, b) from within 100 miles of Sequim, or c) are from WA, OR, or BC. You can tell how much local food is important to them with that detail of categorization. Also, you know how menus at most places might indicate which ingredients are organic? Here, the menu indicates which one are NOT organic, which gives you an idea about how much is organic. In theory, there could be no better plan for a restaurant. And in practice, the food was delicious! I split their truffled french fries and the wood-fired pizza special with my dining partner, and Oh My God. I could have eaten two orders of those truffled fries with the aioli for my entire meal. They were AMAZING. Seriously. I would go back just for them But then! The wood-fired pizza special was also delicious. I can't remember specifically what was on it, but the crust was nice and crispy and well balanced, the cheese was delicious, and I know there was some kind of local sausage on it, which was tasty. We came for lunch and were not starving, so splitting the fries and the pizza was completely sufficient for two people, and made the bill was completely reasonable, especially for the caliber of food that we experienced. I would go back just to eat that same meal, but I also want to go back to try so many other delicious-looking things on their menu. Probably the only non-stellar thing was that the service was not as prompt as it could have been. But really, sitting in the back under sun dappled trees, I really didn't mind waiting a few extra minutes. In short, this is currently one of my favorite restaurants in the entire state of Washington, and I hope that I have many opportunities to return. read more

Because we live in port Townsend where good food is the norm, going to Sequim for a meal is more about getting out of town rather than the food. Not tonight Alderwood was definitely about the food tonight. The roasted beet salad with goat cheese and flatbread with cheese, onions and greens started us off. Next was the leek and potato soup de jour followed by lovely stew of blackened coho salmon,clams, and beans in a wine reduction. But my favorite were the pan fried oysters served with a spicy sauce. Crispy on the outside avd just done on the inside. These were perfect pan fried oysters in the heart of oyster country. We took home a piece of dense just sweet enough carrot cake. Our server, Devon and the staff and chefs of Sequim have made one of the best restaurants in Washington, if not the entire world. On a week-long business trip to Sequim, I had the pleasure of eating here three nights in a row and would gladly eat there for every meal. Let me just mention what they've done with poutine: a french Canadian creation that is always tasty but here made with a twist: grilled brussel sprouts are the fries, a turkey confite-style gravy is the gravy and shaved cheese finishes the dish to make it the most memorable appetizer I may have ever had. Everything else: supreme. From fresh (meaning caught that day) steelhead, to succulent steak, fresh local oysters, and an incredible wine list (loved the tempranillo). Sourcing with local Nash Farms greens--yum and pouring Kangen water, which makes me feel better already, Alder Wood Bistro is a place to go and is highly recommended. Excellent dining experience and the food was fantastic. I had the mussels that were perfectly prepared with a wonderful broth. I ended up consuming the remaining broth after I finished eating the mussels. I also had the special "Tierra Y Mar", perfectly cooked salmon with a house made mustard sauce. The lamb sausage was well seasoned, with mashed potatoes. To finish the meal with a moist, carrot cake with a maple cream cheese frosting. A well balance of sweetness from the frosting and the carrot flavor from the fresh carrots. I also had an hibiscus drink that balance in between the courses. My Darling Husband and myself drove to this Alder Wood Bistro on a lark... it is magnificently appointed. There is so much space inside this Bistro as well... I like not having to worry about accidentally bumping in to another patron when I'm inside various restaurants. I treated my Husband and myself to the Salmon Dinners. I heard that the Meatloaf is good, though, too. We congratulate you on your interior design and the ambience is superb for Date Night. This Bistro is well lit, and the Ladies' Room was clean and tidy. My Husband and myself were surprised to learn... because we are not familiar with this particular Bistro... that most of the Meals are cooked in a Wood Fire. We did not have Dessert on this particular evening, although we wanted to. I think we arrived before most people in Sequim are sitting down to eat their dinners as well... as there were only a few other people inside while we were eating our dinners. I want to go back and taste the Wood Fired Pizza. And, I heard that the Rose' is very tasty. read more

We came in to town to participate in one of the summer events. It was Friday night and peak dinner hour. The wait was going to be 45 mins or more. Based on the reviews and also because of all of the anticipated crowd in town, we decided to wait. During our wait time, we took a walk around town and popped in at the local wine cellar. We were excited to try the menu offerings here, so we didn't eat at the other place. Glad we didn't! The dinner menu was amazing.. we started with fresh fried oyster, followed by rhubarb salad then our entree - steak with Dungeness crab ( with a hint of fennel in the sauce, yummy!) and king salmon on cedar plank. OMG! Melt in your mouth goodness. We did save room for dessert - fresh gooseberry creamy treat and chocolate cake. Needless to say we ate every bite of them. It was well worth the wait!! Hands-down, this place is the best restaurant in Sequim, and a true delight. The food is creative and interesting without being crazy or pretentious. Most importantly, it's incredibly delicious and you can tell that it's made with love! Their devotion to fresh, local, seasonal ingredients is really cool. (Their menu even tells you how local each dish is and where its ingredients come from.) The salads are great - and the small is quite ample, especially as a first course; the large could definitely be a meal in itself. The pizza has a great crispy thin crust and great-quality toppings. I had the veggie pizza, which was kind of a haphazard mix of vegetables - quite obviously a "well, this is what they had at the farmer's market this week" mix - and yet the vegetables were all so delicious and perfectly cooked, so it was still an awesome pizza. The meat pizzas seemed to be even better with more cohesive themes. Finally, the desserts were incredible, particularly the Meyer Lemon Custard Cake. Wow. For being the best (and probably most expensive) restaurant in Sequim, though, this place has a really relaxed, casual ambience. No dressing up required here. The decor is nice, quirky but tasteful, not too fancy. It is a fairly small place - probably not well suited to a very large group. The staff were all wonderful and very nice. read more

This is a wonderful little restaurant. My wife & I with our two teen grandkids had dinner out on the front enclosed patio. The patio has a wonderful heater, optional blankets, and a beautiful atmosphere. The waitress was great, as was the food. Couldn't have been better food or a more friendly atmosphere. Fantastically, I cannot stop thinking about my meal. Last night for dinner, I selected the Pear/blue cheese salad followed by the Duck entree. This was the best meal I have had while eating out since we moved to Sequim 3 years ago. Nothing has been in comparison, not even came close, for from PortAngeles to Port Townsend. From the presentation, freshness, preparation and magically flavorful pairing of everything plated, left me mystically in awe. But for the fact, it's rude, I would have licked my plate. My fiance and I went to Sequim this weekend as a little trip for the two of us. We hadn't been to any of the places we were thinking about going and I was a little wary of Alder Wood Bistro for some reason. The moment that we stepped into the Bistro that all changed. Alder Wood Bistro has a very welcoming appearance and an even more welcoming staff. We were seated rapidly at a comfortable table. Everything served at Alder Wood Bistro was exquisite. I got the Cedar Planked Steelhead and asked them to switch the potato fingers for buttermilk mashed potatoes. Each and every bite was mouth watering. I treasured each bite like it was a morsel (because it was). My fiance got the bacon wrapped meatloaf and it was delicious too (I snuck a bite). She loved it. Our dessert was also amazing. Flourless Chocolate Cake and a Wood Baked Apple Pie. We will definitely be coming back to Sequim and part of it is just for this place! read more

We have been meaning to try this restaurant out since we last visited Sequim in May. We are so glad we finally went this evening because it is the best food we have ever had on the Olympic Peninsula. The service was very friendly and helpful. Delicious beverages and the salmon and chicken were both excellent entrees. The flavors of both dishes were incredible. We both said that sometimes you go to a restaurant and it's menu is full of a bunch of weird dishes with weird flavors, but these dishes were perfect. There should be 10 stars. This place is the best! The food, building, atmosphere, our favorite waitress Tanya! They make you feel as if you're home sitting with a few good friends. It is not a large capacity place, but the lines are always there because the food is always great. If you have never been, you should try a variety of the appetizers paired with a brew or wine. That's what my husband and I did the first few tmes we were there. Then we've been there twice for a New Year's dinner. Reservations may be in order because they are always busy. Simply delightful. Great food good service, and the owners are amazingly nice. Jessica and Gabriel who before I dined here were complete strangers, and when I left they were practically best friends. Charismatic and competent the wait staff was charming with every encounter. Food 5 stars, service 5 star, and price is my only fault. A great food and service is something I'd normally give an automatic five star to, but with smaller portions the value for size isn't there. So a 4 star. But never the less a very very pleasant experience. read more
