Hong Kong Style Pineapple Bun with Butter
    Rebecca N.

Absolutely loved this HK cafe in east LA! The butter pineapple buns (boh loh yau) are actually to die for - this was a standout and we ordered more because they were just so good. The congee (we tried both the fish and beef) was really well flavored as well. Servers were friendly! I would highly recommend and definitely come back if I was in the area.

It's been 6 years since I visited so wanted to try it again. Stopped by for lunch since I missed the breakfast special menu. Beef stew with wonton (3) in soup with egg noodles $15.95. It was a medium size dish which was a little disappointing but shrinkflation is real and it only gets worse from here. This was probably one of the better beef stew and wonton soups I've had in the SGV. Flavorful and not msg forward like majority of the HK cafes here. Noodles were clean and salt on point. I'd get this again.

We heard many good reviews about this place so thought we'd give it a try. Unfortunately, many of the orders we wanted to try was not served at the Monterey Park location, only at the Temple City location. They had stopped serving those items some time in 2024 I believe. Despite this, we still made the best of it. The food we ended up ordering was still very delicious, but we were a bit let down as we didn't get to try the items we came here for. Even though it didn't have everything we wanted, I would still come back for the food they do serve as it is very close to our house. We ordered: HK Style Noodle Soup - 10/10 tastes just like home Minced pork rice - 10/10 would order again String beans - 10/10 perfect savory flavor with a hint of spice Kung Pao Chicken - 10/10 Steamed Flour in House Special Sauce: 10/10 very yummy. The special sauce is peanut based and both sweet and savory. The large was quite large and is perfect for a party of 4 as an appetizer. Dessert: Ovaltine French Toast - just okay. The hype made us want to try it. It was good, but not for the additional price for Ovaltine This spot really feels like you're in Asian. From the color of the seating to the signs all around the restaurant, it reminded me of home.

Ovaltine French toast = a fun, chocolatey, creamy snack to try

We had an extremely satisfying Hong Kong style breakfast at Alice's Kitchen. Everything tasted great, we didn't need to wait too long to be seated on a Saturday morning, food came out relatively quickly, and staff were attentive. Subtotal (without tax and tip yet) for four people was about $80. It was filling and provided us leftovers, too. They had indoor seating and covered patio seating. The interior had some cute decor with pops of color and different beverage items. Inside was small but luckily didn't feel cramped or stuffy. Stellar standouts include the Fried Squid with Spicy Salt, the two Special Steak Breakfasts (boneless Chicken Steak and bone-in Pork Chop), and the Pineapple Bun (served with a pat of butter). The fried foods were deliciously crispy and savory. And the hype regarding their pineapple bun is justified. It's ultra soft and delicate, with a mild sweetness that makes it almost addicting. I could have done without the butter, though. The Pork and Preserved Egg Congee was a comforting dish that didn't taste heavy or overly starchy. The Ovaltine French Toast was a fun sweet snack to try - chocolatey, malty, soft, eggy, and creamy. The Beef Satay soup with egg noodles was good but maybe my least favorite out of what we got (maybe the broth wasn't umami-y enough for me), but I still enjoyed it, especially with those egg noodles. Each of us got a free drink with the meal, which was a nice surprise! I asked for the Coffee Milk Tea, and it was ok-tasting. I preferred the less bitter Milk Tea after sampling some of my friend's. Both drinks were sweet but light enough to easily sip and finish during our dine-in experience. Seemed like they charge extra for to-go cups.

Alice's Kitchen is one of many Hong Kong style cafes in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) area and this is one of two locations for Alice's Kitchen. This flagship location closes at 10 PM whereas the other Temple City location closes at midnight. Our party initially walked into the wrong neighboring restaurant, but luckily our party did not end up ordering anything after realizing the mistake and just walked out. [Parking]: The cafe has a small and free designated parking lot, but I ended up parking on the residential street just a block away from the cafe. There is a Hong Kong cab parked right next to the entrance to take pictures with. [Atmosphere]: Our party came here at 9:30 PM on a Saturday and the restaurant was completely empty. The service was alright and nothing to write home about. [Menu]: Yelp's top highlighted items are #8 - #11 French Toast, #99 Spicy Shredded Pork with House Special Sauce Lo Mein, #152 Soy Sauce Chow Mein, and #170 Spicy Minced Pork Rice. Our party ended up just ordering our comfort food rather than going for the top highlighted items. *** #154 Beef with Dark Soy Sauce Flat Rice Noodle (aka Beef Chow Fun - $15.75): The noodle hit the spot and tasted better than the beef chow fun from Hong Kong Cafe in Monterey Park. #189 Baked Pork Chop in Tomato Sauce ($14.95): The dish was surprisingly good and tasted better than the one I had at Hong Kong Cafe in Monterey Park. *** A solid A-tier Hong Kong comfort food spot. I can see this as one of my go-to restaurants if I am looking for consistent and delicious food without having to worry too much about ambiance.

A staple in the SGV area, if you're looking for good asian food as affordable prices this is your place! We came during dinner time and were able to get seating easily. The menu is pretty extensive and they offer rice and soup dishes. A majority of their dishes can be shared family style so keep that in mind when ordering. Went overboard with ordering and got their chicken congee, a noodle dish, their egg and shrimp, and their fried cod. Both the egg and fish dish came with rice, so we definitely had more than enough for two people! The service was wonderful. We got our food in a matter of minutes after ordering and everything came out piping hot! Flavors were on point and consistent. Will definitely come back to try their pineapple bun sandwiches!

I almost forgot about this place since it has been closed and open. This location is closely tied to Alice's Kitchen in Temple City. I tried the breakfast this morning and it wasn't disappointed. Although the menu is a bit different from it still has a lot of choices. This morning I have spare ribs congee and rice roll. The items are delicious. The portion was generous. The service at this place was polite and attentive. I saw a couple of familiar faces since some of the TC Alice's Kitchen employees are there.

Delicious, fast, and good! Their breakfast menu has all the essentials of hong kong cafe. One unique noodle type they offer here is the rice tunnel noodle. I don't remember the English name for it, but it is like a longer macaroni lol. Fun to eat and different. I always enjoy a good coffee milk tea or lemon iced tea! I don't have too much issue finding parking because going early, but it does get busy with a wait. Always looking forward to come back and enjoy good food.

Yum! I need to come back for breakfast ASAP. We got the HK Noodle Soup, Steamed Flour, Pineapple Bun with butter, and Ovaltine French toast. Everything was so tasty. The food came out very fast & the staff were friendly and efficient. I got there at 12pm on a Sunday and there was a 5 minute wait for a table, not bad at all! Alice's Kitchen has a dedicated parking lot but there's plenty of street parking.

Very delicious, no frills, Hong Kong breakfast spot. The service is quick and food also comes out quickly. I got two different congee (porridge) breakfast combos to share. I got the pork & century egg and the dried vegetable. The portions were large and packed with ingredients. I think that two people could very nicely share one combo, as it is a large portion of food. I also got a pineapple bun, which I waited too long to eat because the butter had melted. Still pretty good.  I like this spot for a quick, filling, and comforting Asian breakfast.

This was my first time trying a Hong Kong-style café, and overall it was a fun experience. My friend and I were welcomed in and seated promptly, and they brought out menus along with bowls, plates, and utensils right away. The vibe of the restaurant was really unique, decorated with movie posters and Chinese music playing in the background, which gave it a cozy, nostalgic feel. I was actually hoping to try their pineapple bun sandwich, but it looks like it's no longer on the menu. Instead, my friend and I ordered the egg and pork congee with a cup of their milk tea. The food came out piping hot. I dressed my congee with chili oil and white pepper, and it hit the spot. The texture was just right, not too thick and not too watery. One congee order was good for two people! The meal came with Chinese donuts, which I haven't had in a long time. The food was solid and comforting, though it didn't totally blow me away. By the time we were finishing up, the café had filled up quickly with a steady stream of customers, so it's clearly a popular local spot. I'd come back to try some of their other dishes next time. Just a heads up: there's a $25 minimum to pay with a credit card, so plan accordingly.

Alice's Kitchen in Monterey Park is a hidden gem Hong Kong cafe! Come for lunch or super early dinner, and definitely get a baked rice and a pineapple bun egg sandwich! You seriously can't go wrong with any of the proteins for this. And if you need a pick me up, the HK milk tea hits the spot and wakes you up! Service is a little brusque but courteous. There's seating outside and inside, and a parking on the sides of the restaurant.

11/24/25 - I ordered the Daily Western Breakfast ($14.25), which is only available until 11:30 am. I got it with Satay Beef, flat rice noodle, toast, and a hot hong kong milk tea. In the future. I think egg noodle would have paired better with the satay beef. I wanted the pineapple bun but they were out of it for the day so I got the toast. Jam packets were provided but I put the scrambled egg from the soup on top of the toast instead. We also ordered a peanut butter french toast for the table. I'm not sure how much it cost but it was really delicious and I would order it again! Our party got there around 11:20 and were immediately seated. The employee was kind enough to let our friend who showed up after 11:30 to still order from the Breakfast menu. We noticed that when it got to noon/lunch time, there was a constant line outside to be seated. Rating: 3.75

That said, the experience before and during the meal was a bit frustrating. When we called in speaking English, the person who answered gave us a lot of rules for a large party. However, when our parents called back and spoke in their native language, they were able to accommodate the large party without any minimum spend . During the meal, when we asked our waitress if we had ordered enough, she encouraged us to add significantly more food. I understand it can be hard to estimate for a big party, but we ended up with so many leftovers that it probably could have fed a party of 20 people. The service was okay overall, but there were a few frustrating moments. For example, when we asked for iced tea, she said they didn't have it. I had to specifically ask for hot tea with a cup of ice, which worked fine, but it would have been nice if she had suggested that option. First, parking was so difficult!! So many cars crammed close to each other and the restaurant wasn't even full, but we parked in the street nearby. The place had plenty of seating when we arrived, spacious tables that fit our group of 16. We had a large party and split into two tables, each table had peanuts and tea, we also ordered our own bit with the same serve at the same time. We ordered our usual dishes such as corn soup, honey walnut shrimp, salt and pepper squid, sal and pepper pork chops, filet beef dish, hainan chicken and many more. The service seemed slow, the bad part is that our other table got all their dishes while we had none. It took a while before our first dish arrived which was honey walnut shrimp, it was good, a bit soggy but flavorful. We asked for rice and started eating, once most of the shrimp was gone the rest of the dishes came. They were delicious, they tasted great and had good portions. The pork chop was great fresh but soon started to get tough as it cooled. The fried squid had parts that were very seasoned and some bland. My sister in law ordered a seafood tofu dish that was the best one but we ate everything before I took a photo. We also shared dishes across the tables to try out our orders. I tried the fried crab but it had more garlic than crab! The restroom was the sad part, there was no toilet paper, and no paper towels. The women's restroom door was propped wide open as well. I had to call my sister to bring in napkins for me... Overall a great meal, we may come back if the occasion allows.
